Hotel is in a good location for the waterfront. The rooms are small - about enough room to get around the bed and that's it. Quirky layout with lots of internal rooms makes for a noisy nights sleep and the mattress was very uncomfortable. Shared showers and toilets but didn't experience any problems finding a 'free' one. Bit like a... More

Thank you for your comments. We do offer a unique lodging experience if you look closely, Tripadvisor has us under Specialty Lodging for a reason: we are a historic hotel. We are sorry that you did not like the mattress, all of them are brand new. Most of our guest let us know that they had a fantastic night, some... More

Stayed here for four nights and would recommend. You felt like you had stepped back in time! Close to Fishermans Wharf and the BART. The rooms are small, but we had booked a twin room with a sink and we managed (cupboard and set of draws). Our beds were comfy. Some of the double rooms were smaller. There is no... More

Was just what we thought. Just what was advertised . Great place, people. We had the penthouse this time. Going back in a week. Just before flying home to England. Walking distance to Pier 39. Cable cars etc. Looking forward to being there again. Thank you so much. Your staff is great. Our thanks

Stayed over for three nights at the San Remo , the room was quite small but the overall beautiful presentation of the hotel compensated for this. The shared bathrooms were always clean and not to mention that massage chairs were an absoloute god send after walking miles every day. The staff were ever so kind and I would definitely recommend... The hotel is very charming and the staff are friendly. Location is great but the rooms are very small and you can hear all the noise from the hallway and the street. I like the inner decoration and the general ambience.

Thank you so for your review. We are glad you liked our location and staff. We are sorry that you encountered some lively neighbors, sometimes this is part the sounds of summer. During summer months everyone is busy, and people tend to gather more on the streets, perhaps while enjoying the longer days and escaping the heat. Hope to see... More

Loved this little hotel. Full of charm and old style ambience in a nice area convenient for everything. It wouldn't appeal to everyone with very small bedrooms and shared bathrooms but the bathrooms were beautifully decorated, immaculately clean and plentiful. Loved the tea, coffee and chocolate brownies provided free everyday and the kids made use of all the sweets!

The hotel is located in Fisherman's Wharf. We navigated the BART and then the F tram getting off at Pier 39. First glimpse of Alcatraz which was great. The hotel is a short walk up Mason. The reception is up a flight of stairs, this is where you're first introduced to the hotel's character. The rooms are shared bathrooms, these... More

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that there were so many things that you appreciated about us. The San Remo Hotel is an exceptionally-maintained historic hotel built in 1906. As such we cannot claim the soundproofing that is common with more modern construction methods, nor do we boast the largest rooms in the city (although you can rent... More

This hotel will become your home in North Beach, a haven for hedonists and culture hounds. Count on style, cleanliness, and comfort. Helpful staff and a great price. Easy access to public transportation, or walk a bit and you are downtown or on fisherman's wharf.

Thank you for your short yet very descriptive review, but what is a Culture Hound? People that: 1) Love to travel 2) Love to eat 3) Always down for an adventure. Thank you for mentioning that our staff was very helpful and that our location can be a walker’s paradise with easy to access to public transportation. We will welcome... More

My husband and I spent 3 separate nights at the San Remo Hotel. It's a quirky place (in a POSITIVE way, with loads of character), within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, and is exceptionally good value for money. Very friendly staff: no fear to take it beyond the usual hotel service and inform you on tourist attractions, bicycle rental, parking, restaurants,... Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
