Hotel Zeppelin San Francisco strikes a chord with its rock and roll theme and eclectic decor, drawing guests into its unique ambiance, albeit a bit dimly lit for some. The central location near Union Square is widely praised, though it's juxtaposed with concerns about bordering less desirable areas. While the cleanliness and engaging game room earn high marks, visitors are disconcerted by disturbances from street noise and the cost, including unexpected fees. Staff service receives commendations for attentiveness, despite occasional lapses in responsiveness.

Hotel Zeppelin always delivers a great experience, from the modern, well appointed rooms to the hospitable staff. Check in is always very friendly and professional, when you receive exceptional service it makes the rest of the stay all the more welcoming. A gentlemen named Kevin was exceptional and very accommodating, and genuinely happy to see me every time and some how recognizes me from previous stays. Courtesy goes a long way. Rooms are always large and clean, modern music styling makes this boutique hotel a unique experience.

Will definitely continue to stay at Hotel Zeppelin when I’m in San Francisco!

The hotel has a great reception area and is very welcoming. The location is great and the staff were friendly.

However, the housekeeping services weren't up to scratch. I had a maid walk in on me whilst I was in the shower, despite putting the do not disturb sign on my door. I fail to see how they didn't see this. And it was only about 10.30am, so why were they being impatient with me when it was so early (I wasn't even checking out that day)? The bathroom was located just by the main door, so you can look directly into the shower, which is literally 6 feet away. I reported this to Reception but nobody had the courtesy to follow this up with me after they investigated.

Other issues that I had with housekeeping included not having a quilt cover on the quilt, which was just wedged between two sheets. I found that so unhygienic. I wouldn't even do this at home and I find it unacceptable that this is done when multiple strangers would be sharing that bed over time. Also, they were hoovering the corridor outside my room at 8.40am on my last day, which just isn't acceptable. I would find 9am to be 'very early' but I honestly wouldn't expect corridors to be hoovered before 10am because people are on holiday and might want a lay in. The maid also didn't replace the used china coffee expresso cups each day, so I went from two down to none after a few days and had to drink my morning coffee from a paper cup. The room also smelt of cheap air freshener (so did the corridor) when I arrived, so I had to vent the room daily with the window opened for prolonged periods. These issues could be resolved by whoever is in charge of housekeeping setting clear standards and ensuring that their staff follow them. There was no evidence that this was happening when I was there, which was disappointing.

If this is the only hotel available in that location at the best price then I would advise people to book it but if there are any other options then I would advise considering researching the alternatives.

Hello David. Thank you for taking time to provide your valuable feedback. I apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. Our Director of Housekeeping is investigating your reports and will take the necessary steps to prevent these issues from reoccuring. We do not place the quilted blankets (duvets) in covers and do indeed place them between two sheets. Please rest assured that they are removed and replaced with a clean one after a guest checks out of a room. Thank you again for your comments.

So I wanted to love this hotel, the website is great but the hotel is NOT. The first night we could hear noises from everywhere. Inside the room the AC was just shaking. The floor was also vibrating. The outside street noise was crazy. My fiancé and I live on the street car line in New Orleans, we are not new to street noise. There were deliveries at all hours of the night. The hotel must be the loading zone for the whole street. We asked to switch rooms, and I will say they switched us the next afternoon without hesitation. The rooms themselves are a decent size, but pretty dated for a "modern" hotel. I would say this is a 3 star hotel at best. The front desk was extremely help when we found ourselves needing to print tickets ten minutes before a comedy show. I believe his name was Victor, so shout out to Victor for saving the day. His service was excellent. Being from New Orleans, we like a night cap at the end of the night. The bar was not open any day we were there. Dec 27-Jan 2nd. We found this pretty crazy. Room service as they call it is also extremely limited. They don't serve the full restaurant menu despite it being connected to the hotel. This was a nice hotel, but just lacking the amenities and services we have grown accustomed to in a 4 star hotel. Lastly, the new room we were moved to was less noisy, but still noisy. I also sleep with ear plugs, so it is NOISY.

Hello veronicafierke, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I'm sorry to hear that it wasn't what you had hoped for. We do have some rooms that face the street which can be on the noisier side, and others interior facing which don't get the same street noise. Being in the heart of the city this type of noise can seem to be nonstop. I'm happy to hear that Victor took great care of you. We will be sure to give him props for a job well done. Please let me know the next time your plans bring you back to SF. I'd love an opportunity to make your next visit memorable for all the right reasons. We only stayed one night and we only chose this hotel because if we booked through our credit card which offered a free welcome amenity and free breakfast. It’s listed as only a handful of “luxury” hotel options on our credit card so we thought it would be really nice. We were wrong. While the staff were very friendly, the hotel is fairly outdated. The bed was pretty uncomfortable. Our door kept shaking all night and morning when someone nearby would close their door, which initially had me jumping out of bed thinking someone was trying to break in, until it kept doing it every few minutes is when I realized it was just shaking when someone near us closed their door. Our free amenity was two small water bottles and a small jar of M&Ms, I honestly would have rather gotten nothing. Although there was a thoughtful handwritten note with it that someone spent some time on, which I appreciate. We ended up getting charged for our “free” breakfast, so I need to call to get that reversed. We have stayed at the Westin near by and had comfy beds and no door shattering all night, I highly recommend staying there. This hotel is geared towards a younger crowd, so if you’re in your early to mid 20’s you may like it more.

I booked our room at Hotel Zeppelin because it seemed like a fun place with some character. Our experience there was very disappointing, however, and I would not recommend staying there when there are so many other options in the area in the same price range.
The lobby, the focal point upon first arrival, appears that it was redecorated ~5 years ago, but the furniture and fixtures have a become dingy and worn in the interim. I did not want to sit on any of the furniture in the lobby.

Even more egregious, even though a room was ready when we arrived, the Zeppelin wanted $50 to allow us to have access to our room before the stated check-in time. This isn't a request made in advance: the work had already been done, and they simply wanted to charge us for being early. I declined, and thankfuly they hadn't lowered themselves to charging people for storing their luggage. I've never encountered this before, and it was a very off-putting beginning.

It also seems that we got no benefits for the mandatory daily hotel charge. Since that fee became essentially universal, every hotel we have stayed at has gone out of their way to try and justify it's existence by stressing what amenities you are granted: gym, office facilities, drink coupons, dinner discounts, etc. Not at Zeppein. If there were any amenities at the hotel at all no staff member mentioned them to us. (we did stumble upon the downstairs game room on our own, and that seemed like something that should have been mentioned to us upon check-in, but also note that the bathrooms down there reeked of sewage and you could smell it well outside the bathrooms as well)

Our room was no better. There was plenty of space, but the lighting was horrible, the floor had a large ridge in the middle and the mattress was very uncomfortable. On top of all that, we were directly adjacent to what appeared to be an employee washroom, which was used throughout the night, and we could hear the door close every time. The view from our room was of a small alcove filled with construction equipment

Long story short: for what the Hotel Zepppelin charges you can find much better hotels in the vicinity. Go stay there.

Hello CAScientist, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I’m sorry to hear that it wasn’t what you were hoping for. I have shared to your comments with the housekeeping team to look at the furniture. Trust that if we find anything it will be corrected, so no one else experiences the same thing. You are correct that we do charge for early check in’s as check in time is 3:00 pm per each reservation. We do the same for late check out’s as well which is standard throughout the city. The same can be said for the Guest Amenity Fee which includes all the things that you mentioned. Again, I’m sorry if my staff failed to share that with you. I truly hope you won’t let this be your last experience with us. I would love an opportunity to make your next visit memorable for all the right reasons. If not here, then perhaps at one or our other three properties in San Francisco. Please reach out to me directly should you find yourself headed our way. I would be happy to help. We booked this hotel for New Year’s Eve ages ago because nye hotel is so expensive. this is the cheapest one I could find months ago.

Anyway. It doesn’t matter the service of staff (which is not really nice) or size of the room (it is small) or if it’s clean (relatively clean-ish) or location (which is quite central), this hotel, from the second you entered to the lobby, and to the hallway and to the room is...... smelling of pee. It’s like living inside a puppy toilet. It’s horrible. It’s disgusting...... The bathroom smells better than the room itself. Our first room is unbearable and they help us change to another room, However it still smells..... they tried to do something. But it doesn’t help! Please avoid at all costs. If you read other reviews about how nice this is, either they can’t smell anything or it’s fake. I paid way too much for a room that smells really bad. Gosh. Wish I saved more money to stay at a chain hotel Marriott or Hilton. Have I mentioned how bad smell this hotel is. If you still choose to pick it, good luck and hope you can’t smell anything.

Ps. Hope the picture of the room attached doesn’t contain the smell. If it does. My apologies.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Zeppelin. The front desk staff were very kind (everyone we met there was nice and helpful). The rooms were quirky and fun. There are blackout curtains, a fridge, Nespresso machine (and they'll replace as much as needed), and a nice robe & room safe. We booked two rooms for our family and both were excellent - the front desk staff even made sure ours was a King room and the kids had separate beds. Downstairs is a fun play room with basketball, pool, etc. The restaurant, the Rambler, is closed due to covid but there are plenty of great places to eat nearby. One person working at the front desk recommended the Matador, a Mexican restaurant just around the corner, and it was fantastic. The rooms had all of the toiletries you could use and they replaced our towels as needed.

The hotel is in a good location, easily able to access tourist attractions by Uber for about $11 per trip (Pier 39, Wharf, Hyde Pier, etc.). Within walking distance from Union Square and Chinatown. Due to COVID, the restaurant on site isn’t open, but they did offer in-room dining, which we didn’t use. Check in was seamless, as was check out. The room was small, but comfortable and we weren’t in it much due to sightseeing all day.

After a week travelling from Las Vegas San Diego to San Fran 5 hotels and air bnb our last hotel was zeppelin. It is more like a hostel , chipped paint on doors , doors not closing properly and a terrible smell in building . Run down carpets smell, shower needs a good clean .
The bar had flat beer and raw chicken wings .
Plus is good location but for a night of luxury I would suggest else where .
Receptionist was really friendly gave us an upgrade . We booked superior room and upgrade I’m not sure what it was I think a quiet room was the difference.
Overall working in hospitality myself I would suggest a good clean a paint , and something to sort out smell. A good maintenance person to secure doors and for the price clearly needs new management to make sure bar and kitchen also up to scratch .

Hotel was hip and nicely decorated. Room was a little dingy feeling and could have been cleaned better. Windows open so that is great and noise was not an issue. Game room was fun but photo booth was out of order as was our in room record player. Looks like the 3rd floor is getting some work done so hopefully they are addressing this. No bar or restaurant on site and the room service options are limited to fried food and burgers. Plenty to eat around the corner though.
