Whenever I visit San Francisco, the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway is always my first choice. Depending on the time of year it can be pricey but I have not had an issue in getting a room at a reasonable price. After an 8 hour delay on y cross country train trip I arrived at the hotel at 1:30 in the morning. As I was about to check in, the night clerk advised that the system had just "gone down" and would I wait a few minutes. Another guest arrived after me and was told the same. I will admit that it was only a matter of minutes and we were able to complete the check in process. However, when I gave the clerk my credit card I was told the card was "declined" I gave another and was told the same thing. By this time I was getting frustrated as I knew that there was nothing wrong with either card and I asked the clerk if I could have my key as I was tired and needed sleep and I would clear it up later in the morning. He was accommodating, no pun intended, and allowed me to go to the room. In the meantime I had called 1 of the 2 credit card companies and was told that my account was in good standing and they saw no attempted charge by the hotel on the account. I went to bed and later in the day I went to the front desk and was told that there was no issue. That was the "worst" experience I had at the hotel.

The room itself was comfortable and clean. I was put on an upper floor (25th) as requested. After sleeping 3 nights on a moving train I needed a good night's sleep was was not disappointed. The bed and pillows were comfortable. I did not partake in the food service offered by the hotel but did have coffee in the morning while planning my day. Speaking of coffee...the room had a Keurig coffee maker in the room and the coffee provided was Royal Cup. It was great coffee. So much so that I asked at the front desk for extra. The location of the hotel was perfect for my needs as I was able to walk to Fisherman's Wharf and to the downtown area without any difficulties.

This hotel remains my go to hotel when visiting San Francisco I highly recommend.

We stayed here for a couples trip and it was ok. The staff did a fine job. The hotel was clean and our room was nice and clean. We had a small fridge in our room which came in handy. There is also a nice restaurant and bar downstairs. There is a CVS vending machine on the 1st floor where you can purchase some medication and other important items. The fitness center is very nice and spacious with a filtered water system. The ice and vending machines are located on every other floor. There is also a nice microwave area on the Lower Level since the room did not have a microwave. The parking is $40 per night. Housekeeping has to be requested daily which we did and they did a great job of keeping our room clean. This hotel is conveniently located next to the Cable Car that stops at California and Van Ness. We rode this all the way down to the Ferry/Port of San Francisco. There are also multiple buses that stop on Van Ness in front of the hotel which made it easy for us to get around town without having to pay a ton for Uber. We purchased a 3 day Muni pass for $31 which was unlimited rides on buses, cable cars, trains etc.
There are somethings that you need to be aware of if you stay here. We asked the guy at the front counter for a recommendation for lunch and we went to eat lunch and ran into a lot of homeless people on the way. We didn’t know that we were staying near an area called the Tenderloin. I didn’t feel comfortable walking through this area with my wife and I saw somethings that almost made me turn around. If you stay at this hotel, I advise you not to walk in that direction but walk in the opposite direction towards California Street where it’s safer and much nicer.
The walls in this hotel are super thin. We heard conversations on both sides coming from the other rooms. The bed was so squeaky that I thought about trying to get some WD-40 to see if that would help. There are 6 elevators but at least 1 or 2 of them were out of order. The cleaning guy had 2 elevators closed down at the same time while he was cleaning them out. I don’t understand why you would tie both elevators up at the same time while cleaning. Would be better to clean them 1 at a time. Overall, this hotel was fine. Also, the shower and tub drain was not working properly. It drained the water very slow which caused the water to fill up in the bottom. If we come back to San Francisco, we will definitely stay in a better location that’s no so close to the Tenderloin and a hotel with a little better quality.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn over Christmas with my dad so we had two rooms. Check in was a bit bizarre and the person at reception was not the most friendly. We were given rooms next to each other which was nice. The room was of a decent size and nice view of the city, though as others have mentioned, the windows were dirty so it’s not like you’re going to gaze out for very long. Bathroom was standard and amenities were sparse but I’m sure if you asked for more, they would deliver. The mini fridge was surprisingly large and cold. I cranked it up and a bottle of rose and champagne froze solid. That doesn’t often happen with a hotel fridge. The bed and linens were quite comfy and the hotel was quiet. The fitness room was nice and functional. I could see though that it could be problematic if the hotel were at capacity as there wasn’t that much equipment. The restaurant wasn’t open but there was an amazing array of grab and go options- from salads and wraps to multiple choices of beer and wine. There were a few bars and restaurants within walking distance and you could walk to some sites if you didn’t mind longer treks. I’ve stayed at several hotels in San Francisco and I have to say this was a tremendous value for the price and quality.

Very inconsistent property which yields for a very mixed review. The Porte-cochère, lobby, front desk, restaurant areas are kind of updated, clean and reasonably spacious. After you check in and move into the garage (that is a plus for this property), you feel alright about your selection. Garage feels decently clean, safe and with decent lighting. Then the inconsistency shows up its ugly head. The garage access doors through two fire doors is very tight and poorly illuminated. At this point you think you made a terrible choice... just to be surprised by a half floor flight of stairs and if you made the mistake of waiting to unload the car until you parked and unloaded your staff into a cart... think again. Once you get through that, you are able to breath again as the elevator areas is ok. That will be the first time you get across what might be the worst first impression of this property. The hallway carpet reminds you of a 1960's Las Vegas Back of The Strip hotel. Dirty more than anything else. I wasn't expecting high ceilings, spacious hallways and resort architectural scale as the building screams 1970-1980 from the exterior. Hallways are low ceilings and bit tighter than I would like. By now you've been through the worst and you arrive at your room. Carpet remains untrustworthy but at least the room was given a "lipstick on a pig" kind of make over and it didn't feel dirty. Furnishings are alright and bathroom has the bare minimum to remove itself from the 90's. Most importantly, decent beds and clean sheets. Another issue I found while spending the weekend there was that I was awoke at 06:28 am by someone vigorously cleaning a bucket for about 15 minutes on a utility room right next door to our room. I am sure the bucket did not make it alive from that interaction! Whoever was doing it, was deliberately thinking: "If I am up and working on a Saturday so should everyone else!!!" I tried to keep my cool as that person clearly wasn't thinking about what would everyone else in this floor would be doing at that hour and just carrying on with his day but the same thing repeated Sunday morning as well! Since people are creature of habit, do not plan to sleep in if you are staying at the 9th floor. On the plus side the property has a on-site garage at the extra cost of $40 a night and be careful with hotels that advertise "Parking Available". A lot of them mean down the street at a some parking lot for fees that can go upwards of $75 a night. A lot like the breakfast In a pinch I would consider staying here again. Last note: Contrary to the majority of Holiday Inn Express brand this location does not include a continental breakfast.

Oh boy. Let's chalk up some of this to COVID challenges.

Check in:. Hot slow mess. After an uneventful flight, a BART experience that keep me on the road edge of my seat, and a decent slog up to the hotel through SF's more colorful parts like Civic center. I was greeted by a kind gentlemen who didn't seem to be in any rush as the line grew from 2 to 7 and an airline crew. They needed help and it was just one guy who was in no rush and another who was looking overrun. After what seemed like an eternity I gpt my key cards.

Hotel:. It's a holiday inn. So no one should expect the 4 seasons. Seeing the active cleaning and sterilizing was very comforting. However this poor place is beatup and needs attention. From the desk in the room, to the elevators, and the A/C it all needed work. It feels more comfort inn or mom and pop motel than a mid tier IHG brand hotel.

Area: it's in an interesting intersection of neighborhoods. Pac Heights to the W/NW. Japantown to the SW. Polk Gulch / Tenderloin to the E/SE. And Russian hill/Lower polk to the North. Keep your guard up especially at night and for godsakes don't try to park your car on the street to save $40/night the broken glass and lost , whatever the crackhead took, won't be worth it. And trust me even if it's only 5 min don't take the risk. The crackheads lurk in the shadows. Bonus the California cable car starts right one the corner of this building (California and Van Ness) and there is a whole foods a block away for the health concious but frugal. IMHO California Cable car gives some of the best views, isn't as crowded and is a decent way to get from the hotel to the embarcadero.

Room: as stated the furniture is a little worse for wear but if you get an east facing room on a high floor you will be treated to a view and sun. Lots on skin burning, melanoma enduring sun. So keep that in mind on day trips best close your blinds. And on hit days check your AC does make the cursed noise mine is making.

I stayed here a couple of times before, but years back. Still a comfortable lodging less the ineptitude of several of the front desk personnel. Hint: if you need something taken care of, use your room phone and contact the appropriate department. Going through the front desk may not bring closure to your problem. Twice, once with a room maintenance issue and again with a cleaning issue, the front desk never sent my request forward. Note also, windows are securely shut, so you'll need to control the room comfort levels through the wall thermostat. And you'll need to carry your key card if you wish to access the elevators to room floors. My room had a fridge with ice and vending on the floor. The lobby area also houses a bar/restaurant and there're grab and go food items. Microwave is in the cellar. The hotel's location is really what makes it. A far less grungy area than hotels downtown and near the Tenderloin, you still have good access to restaurants, sites, and activities. Numerous buses and one cable car pass very nearby the hotel entry, so easy to get to the wharf, Powell Street, and even the Pacific Ocean. No need to for car hiring unless it's very late night. One street over, Polk, has about a half mile strip of interesting restaurants. The San Francisco Opera House and neighboring Symphony are about a ten minute walk south by the Hayes Valley neighborhood neighboring the Mission District to its south.

There are a number of Holiday Inns in San Francisco. This was the first time we stayed at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway. We picked it because the price was fair, parking was available on premises and most of all it was on Van Ness Blvd. (Hwy 101). It is very easy to get to from SFO or anywhere else. Van Ness is a major thoroughfare that runs through San Francisco.

It was infinitely better than trying to drive to one of the hotels on Union Square (which we have done many times in the past). Although it was built in 1972 it underwent a major renovation in 2015. It feels current and up to date.

The best thing about this hotel was Anthony at the front desk. Sadly, he has retired, but he made our stay. We arrived on a red eye too early to check in, but he arranged for our luggage to be checked, set us up with out room which needed to be made up, and made a great recommendation for a restaurant where we could get breakfast. He put us in a room on a high floor that had a great view of the city. Actually, all of the rooms have great views as the hotel is not surrounded by buildings, like in the Union Square area, and rooms start on the 6th floor. I felt treated like a friend, not just a customer.

Our room was comfortably large, the furnishings were great, and most importantly, the beds were comfortable. The housekeeping staff were excellent and friendly.

There is a good size pool and a nicely appointed work out room to burn off those calories

There are a lot of restaurants within walking distance, most notably by favorite: House of Prime Rib. One street over on Polk Street are many restaurants, eateries, and coffee shops.

The main advantage this property has over others (including the other Holiday Inns in San Francisco) is it's location and ease of parking. I saved a lot of time leaving from and returning to the hotel because of its ideal location.

Bottom line: a fine hotel in a supremely convenient location staffed with friendly, well-trained employees.

Aloha from the Waipahu Traveler

Location is ok, but that’s it. Parking is incredibly limited, there is a 5’ 9” height restriction which you don’t get told about until you arrive and find out for yourself. This basically eliminates any SUV. They recommend parking around the corner on Sacramento. The charges there vary from $50 - $65 depending on which way the wind is blowing so be careful.
My room is on the 22nd floor, the view is great. The room is shabby, wallpaper coming off the wall and generally a very aged and tired feel. Despite requesting a full room clean after 11am when checking in, I’ve just come off the phone with reception to complain that the room has not been cleaned at all for 2 days. They have offered to clean it tomorrow…. Which is after I check out. Cheers.
Lastly, I wasn’t offered and haven’t been given my IHG welcome amenity points. If you collect these, you will know what a constant battle it is to get hotels to do their jobs without having to chase and complain.

What a great deal. This hotel is very reasonably priced, it well located for easy access to many SF highlights and most importantly, the views from the hotel are impressive. We slept with the curtains open from our 21st floor room so that we could wake up to sunrise over the water. Wow, impressive. We found the rates to be reasonable, the staff to be friendly (in general) and the location is great. There is a Whole Foods two blocks away and the best donuts west of the Mississippi are also two blocks away (and open 24 hours).

What can I say, its a Holiday Inn. It wasn't anything fancy, but it wasn't a total dump either. We stayed here because they had a washer and dryer onsite that we could wash our clothes in. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Parking was $40 a night in a secure garage. The rooms were a little dated, but not too bad. Happy travels!

It looks like they call it One King Bed Standard Bay View (High Floor). It should show it in the associated photo and be the highest cost standard room short of suites. It is confusing on their website, so I would call the hotel to confirm that you want a corner window room. North and West facing seems the most attractive.

Nothing currently available due to covid, OTHER than crappy take out wraps or bites. PLENTY of great spots nearby on Polk or California. Given the lack of hygiene at this dumpl, I would not choose to eat there either way
