Hotel's Favorite
We stayed at the Handlery Union Square Hotel for 4 nights in September. The hotel is located on Geary Street right near the Union Square where there are lots of great stores and restaurants. It is close to the cable cars, China Town and easy to get to other interesting parts of San Francisco such as the cable car museum.
The rooms were very nice and big! We had a nice view of the outdoor pool. I booked the sauna and it was a nice relaxing experience! Joyce at the front desk was always very helpful and recommended restaurants. Terry and the other cleaning staff did a great job.
We would highly recommend this hotel!

We’d married in Vegas and moved to San Francisco for the honeymoon part of our US trip. We chose The Handlery based on location reviews.
My husband had told the hotel we were on honeymoon which I did not know and they very kindly proved a bottle of fizz and snacks on a complimentary basis which was a nice, personal touch and really appreciated.
The room was lovely. Very, very clean on arrival, with a really comfy settee and chair and TV but most importantly a fridge!
A fridge to me, is very important, especially on a city break, sometimes you walk so many miles and are so busy during the day it’s really nice to chill in the room of an evening and that’s easier with your own drinks chilling in the fridge.
We only ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel (the daily grill) once. We had breakfast and, despite them mucking up our order what we had was nice. Expensive but nice.
We did really like this hotel. It has a good vibe, it was however pretty expensive per night and though the room was absolutely spotless on arrival it did not appear to be vacuumed for our whole stay of 6 nights which was a bit surprising and the 4 star I have given reflects this. When you’re laying $200 a night the least you expect is a daily vacuum.
The position of the hotel is great, you’re right on the end of Powel St so have a couple of options for the cable car direct to Fisherman’s Wharf, you’re immediately on Union Square (not very inspiring in my opinion and not much going on) but we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. The only reason for a 4 star is the price and housekeeping which did not warrant a 5 star.

Although Union Square with all the fancy shops is not my thing the hotel itself was easy with all the transportation options being close by. Check in was quick. We ordered coffee and fruit in the morning since it was about the same price as nearby cafes. It was a little slow but we just began ordering earlier. Room was clean and efficient. Booked our room directly through the website and felt that $150 on a weekend and $130 on a weekday was about the going rate if not a little cheaper than other options. Would definitely stay again.

Our first time at the Handlery (8 nights) and we were very pleased with our choice. We booked a 2 dbles room in the Premier building (newer part), The room overlooked Geary St and was on the 7th floor. It was large, very clean and airy and had little touches such as a 'dressing' area (no scrapping over the bathroom mirror!) and a retractable clothes line over the bath. The shower was quite powerful and efficient for an old building. We heard very little noise from the street or the adjacent rooms / hallway and used the garage entrance on Geary St to come and go, so avoided the walk back through to the main reception building on O'Farrell. The staff were polite and helpful - from front desk to the housekeeping staff. Our request for a late check-out was granted, so that we could sightsee in the morning then freshen up prior to our late afternoon flight back to the UK. We would happily recommend The Handlery to friends and family.

The hotel is in a good location, very close to Union Square and a reasonable walk to Chinatown and Pier 39. The room was spacious and clean with a very nice seating area and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was somewhat small but well-equipped. I would have preferred a walk-in shower with a door rather than a curtain, but everything was clean. The staff were very welcoming and professional. The hotel restaurant was closed due to the pandemic, but we were given a discount coupon for Cafe Mason around the corner and had a nice breakfast there. The one drawback we found with the hotel is that there is limited access between the two buildings of the hotel. The elevator to our room was accessible from the back entrance of the building where the parking garage is, but we found when we returned at night to the main lobby, we had to take a longer route involving stairs to get to the elevators that would take us to our room. There is a special elevator designed for disabled people to use in place of the stairs, but we did not feel comfortable using it. Overall, however, we had a very enjoyable stay at this property.

Good afternoon MMeReverie, Thank you for staying with us during your trip in SF. And more importantly thank you for writing us a post stay review. Ever since the closure of our hotel restaurant during the pandemic, we have been able to work out a good deal with the Cafe Mason around the corner, providing our guests with 20% off! I'm glad to hear you took advantage of that perc! We hope to see you next time, and always remember to call the hotel direct with any questions and updates on recent packages. All the best!

Upon arrival the guest relations lady at reception could not have been more disinterested in us, continuing to chat to her colleague rather than attend to us.Booked a suite which was large and airy but a bit weird. The bathroom had a bath but the basin was in a different room.
The suite had a small kitchen with microwave but no cutlery or crockery
The fridge was very small
The breakfast area must be managed by a third party because the hotel did not seem to have any control over the quality of the food or the staff.

My boyfriend and I had an anniversary trip planned mid-August and had contacted our accommodations a few weeks prior to ensure we were still able to travel. When I called the Handlery, they informed me they were closed and would not be able to have us stay; which seems a little bizarre that they wouldn’t have reached out to their booked reservations to let them know? Either way, I cancelled late July, it is now September, and they still haven’t refunded the money from the trip and are completely unreachable. Pretty disappointed in their customer service, and bummed we didn’t have the chance for a full stay. I had originally planned to rebook with them, but now will definitely not. Be aware if you have any need for flexibility in this trying time, this is NOT the place for you.

Dear Natalie, I am sorry to hear of the difficulty you experienced with the refund. I have checked with our accounting department and it seems the refund has been processed on our end. Please call the hotel if you have still not received it. I also want to apologize for the late reply to this review. Due to COVID19 restrictions in San Francisco the hotel has been closed since April 2020, and we have just reopened our doors. I hope you will give us another chance to host you if you choose to come to SF again. Once again sorry for any difficulty and please call the hotel and speak with Stephanie in our accounting department if there are any issues around the refund. All the best, Jack Handlery

We arrived ahead of check in but were able to check into our rooms, reception staff were helpful enough and polite. We stayed in the historic rooms which appeared dated but we felt it added to the experience, the bathroom was quite small with a small dark corner shower. It was functional. A large selection of towels were available and could be changed daily if needed. Complimentary soaps and shampoos also. The beds were very comfortable and ample pillows.
The room also had a mini fridge which was very useful, hairdryer and ironing facilities. There was also a TV with a useful list of the channels available, along with coffee making facilities.
We didn't use the pool however we had a look and it was nice and the children looked to be enjoying themselves.
Whilst there was no restaurant on site we had the option to order room service from outside which we used and was very nice.
We received a voucher for breakfast from a local cafe however we did not visit here as we had recommendations of other local places we wanted to try.
The most disappointing thing was the view, if we had our curtains opened we were looking right into someone else's room.

What a wonderful, traditional hotel in the heart of Union Square!
A perfect end to our Cali road trip for our honeymoon.
The hotel room was perfect, we informed the manager that we were on honeymoon and we’re welcomed by a room upgrade and a bottle of champagne.
The room was lovely, very spacious. Great facilities and the most comfy bed we stayed in during our 3 week trip.
The hotel is in a prime location and although it’s a walk from Pier33 you feel that you are in the traditional part of San Fran but safe.

I've been in Handlery hotel 2 times one in October 2018 and the other in August 2021, so far it is the best hotel i've been stayed at, love the location right in the center of Union Square near to all the good things SF has to offer. I like that is a old fashion hotel love the old elevator, the pool is great (has warm water), the showers water pressure is nice, love the bathtub. Rooms are nice, clean, bed is really conformable, bedclothes are clear. On the 2021 (I went with my cousin) they gave us 2 $5.00 starbucks gift card which was really nice and a 20% coupon for a breakfast (which we didn't use). Looking forward to stay there again next time I'll visit SF. Check-in and check out was fast and with 0 issues.

Sadly, homeless is everywhere. I believe you have to decide your comfort level with the homeless. My sister and I saw homeless people along with drug use in the streets. We never felt threatened or in any danger. We Ubered around the city and took the street car to and from the hotel from Fisherman's Wharf. We thought the hotel and location were perfect.
Hi there,
You do not need a key card to use the lift.
Best,
Laura Handlery
Personally I think you're dreaming but the risk is low so go for it. I'd prefer to stay elsewhere tho!
Our room had a small fridge. I’m not sure if all rooms have them. There are no laundry facilities on site. We ran into the same issue of needing to wash clothes. There are stores within walking distance that carry laundry detergent, and there is a clothesline I’m the hotel bathroom. We washed clothes in the sink and hung them up to dry.
