The Grand Hyatt San Francisco Union Square garners praise for its excellent location, surrounded by numerous shops and attractions, although guests do point out the high costs associated with its central setting. While the rooms are generally described as clean and comfortable, some visitors have highlighted size and maintenance issues. Noise is a common complaint, with disturbances from the street reaching even the upper floors.
Opinions on the hotel's atmosphere and value are mixed, with some guests finding the decor lacking and the prices steep for the services received. Cleanliness is usually well-regarded, and while the hotel's amenities are appreciated, there are noted areas for improvement. The service receives a mixed response, with the staff being both lauded for their professionalism and critiqued for occasional slow service during periods of staffing strikes.

Detailed Reviews
We had an awesome, huge 2-room, 2 bath suite on 33rd floor with a spectacular view of the city. My only complaint was that the furnishings in the living room were a bit spartan and could use an update, and the window shades in both rooms need replacing with better, more modern ones.
The common spaces were quite nice, and service and overall vibe was very good. Would have appreciated a room service menu at reasonable prices.
I did not appreciate the excessive charge for self-parking in the (yes, convenient) public lot across the street (we drove to SF) - although I know SF is notorious for expensive parking prices. Seems to me Hyatt guests could actually get a *discounted* rate, rather than a boosted rate (public rate is $46 for 24 hours - we paid $62). Valet parking was an unconscionable $90/day.
All that said, Union Square location was better than I expected, despite being in a busy area, and turned out to be perfect for our needs - especially with 2 small dogs who needed walking (they appreciated the grassy spots). It's one block from the Powell/Hyde cable car, one block from Chinatown, walkable to Embarcadero and Market St/SoMA area. NBA All-Star Weekend activities in Union Square park, and Lunar New Year parade added to the sparkle and fun. Little café in the park had unexpectedly good coffee and pastries. And, yes, we did make a purchse at the Apple Store just downstairs on the corner. :-)

Hotel's Favorite
This hotel is located right in the center of San Francisco. A lot of good restaurants can be found nearby. It is well decorated. The city views on the top floors are great! The rooms are spacious and clean. The staff is friendly and ready to assist you. Although me and my family only spent 2 nights, we enjoyed very much our stay.

・Near Powell Street Station
・Has a lounge
It met my criteria, and I had a good impression of the Hyatt I had stayed at before, so I used it.
I made the reservation through the Hyatt membership system.
I was able to walk from the station without any problems, even while rolling my suitcase.
It's in a great location, with the brand street, convenience stores, Starbucks, and McDonald's nearby.
I was there at reasonable times, so I didn't feel unsafe.
On the opposite side of the front desk (where the fountain is), there is an ATM, a small shop, and a concierge desk.
The door leading to the outside is only for the exit and cannot be used for entering.
I arrived at noon and was allowed to enter the room right away.
The room was directly below the club lounge, and had a great view of the sea beyond the high-rise building.
The room had just been renovated, so it was new and clean, and there was an empty refrigerator.
The single-bed type had a wide bed and I could sleep comfortably, and the view of the morning and evening fog was beautiful from the window.
The door to the bathroom was a sliding door.
Although there was only a shower, the space was large and the head was movable, so it is also suitable for families with small children.
The food in the lounge was of the minimum necessary, and the fruit in particular was very sweet and delicious, so I looked forward to it every morning.
It is convenient to be able to take out coffee and other items.
Breakfast (continental): Mon-Fri: 6-10, Sat-Sun: 7-10
Fresh vegetables, cut fresh fruit, ham, cheese, one egg dish, one hot meal,
Bread, etc.
Snacks: 12-16 every day
Apples, bananas, oranges, cookies, tortilla chips, etc.
Cocktail time: 17-20 every day
Stick vegetables, ham, cheese, one hot meal of tacos, etc.
Alcohol is charged
The staff at the front desk and in the lounge were all friendly and welcoming.
I would like to stay here again when I visit San Francisco.
Thank you for your hospitality.

Luxury Hotel Turned Nightmare Due to Strike
What should have been a luxurious stay at the Grand Hyatt turned into an absolutely frustrating experience due to the ongoing employee strike. I understand workers' rights to protest, but management's handling of the situation was abysmal and guests were left to suffer the consequences.
From the moment I arrived, it was clear this wasn't the five-star experience I had paid for. The entrance was crowded with striking workers, making it awkward and uncomfortable to enter. Without the regular bell staff, I had to drag my own luggage through the chaos. The check-in process took nearly an hour due to skeletal staffing at the front desk.
The room itself showed clear signs of neglected maintenance. Trash hadn't been properly removed from the previous guest, the sheets appeared unchanged, and dust was visible on most surfaces. Calls to housekeeping went unanswered, and when I went to the front desk to complain, I was told they were "operating with limited staff" and would "get to it when possible." They never did.
The restaurants were moved to higher floors, which was not nice. Room service was non-existent.
What's most frustrating is the hotel's complete lack of transparency. At these prices ($400+ per night), they should have warned guests about the strike situation before arrival or offered cancellations without penalty. Instead, they seemed content to collect full rates while delivering motel-level service.
The few replacement workers they did have appeared undertrained and overwhelmed. Simple requests like extra towels or working WiFi passwords turned into ordeals.
Pro tip: If you're considering booking the Grand Hyatt, check if the strike is still ongoing. If it is, save yourself the headache and book elsewhere. This was possibly the worst value for money I've ever experienced at a supposedly luxury hotel.
Positives:
- Location is still good
- Building's architecture is nice from the outside
Negatives:
- Severely understaffed
- Poor communication about strike situation
- Neglected cleanliness
- Closed amenities
- Inadequate compensation for subpar experience
- Overpriced for the level of service provided
- Replacement staff poorly trained
- No proper dining options
- Unresponsive management
- Uncomfortable arrival experience
Would not recommend until the strike is resolved and regular operations resume.

This hotel is hard to review as it is nothing like the Grand Hyatt Melbourne or Singapore. If you haven’t experienced another Grand Hyatt and are not expecting the same service as other hotels, you might like this hotel.
Location is great, close to China Town and an easy walk to the piers. Very close to supermarkets and other stores.
Don’t expect help with your bags when you arrive or depart. We arrived in an Uber, and there were three doormen outside having a chat. None of them greeted us or helped with luggage. This could be something that they don’t offer; I don’t know. Certainly not the standard at other Grand Hyatt’s we have stayed in.
I wanted to pay for our stay in full, so the total amount was not held on my credit card; this was not allowed by the gentleman who checked us in. Check-in was quick, and the agent was friendly. We were given two bottles of water at check-in, and you can pick up two bottles each day from reception.
We booked a Club Lounge room; these rooms are on a high level of the hotel. We had a corner room that was a bit bigger than an ordinary one. No robes, toothbrushes, shower caps, etc. I did see on the app that you can request these items. You couldn’t hear street noise from the room, but the walls are very thin, so you could very easily hear conversations from the room next door and them walking around.
The view across the city was very nice.
Club Lounge. There is no option to check in or out at the lounge. The lounge itself is very basic, and there are neither couches nor similar places to sit and relax and it is very uninviting. It’s a shame, as the view from the lounge is excellent.
Breakfast consisted of fruit, yoghurt, cheese, meats, scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, pastries, etc. There is no option to order freshly made eggs, omelettes, etc.
Snacks throughout the day and then an evening offering. The hot options were not pleasant. More like food offered in a cafeteria, it did not feel like it had been made in the restaurant of the hotel. It did not improve over our 4 nights. Wine, beer, and spirits are not included; they have an honour bar system. Wine and beer $5, spirits $7. The club is certainly not worth paying extra for; we have experienced a lot of club lounges, and this is the most disappointing one by far.
Staff in the club are very quiet but very nice.
We left a bag in the club and didn’t realise. Ben went out of his way to get the bag back to us, which we were very grateful for.
Checkout was quick, and we left our bags there for a few hours due to a late flight. We were given access to a bathroom to change after collecting our bags.
The hotel is on the older side and could do with a renovation. Overall, a very disappointing stay.

My experience was as expected for a Grand Hyatt hotel - you get a good clean room. Housekeeping was very fast and they waived the early checkin fee (which I don't think should be imposed in the first place).
There was a homeless dude taking a dump behind the hotel on my first day there. But its frisco, so its nothing surprising, but was surprised that it happened near union square.
Excellent hotel location, right beside a starbucks. Walkable to most tourist destinations, including Chinatown, Pier 39, Ferry Terminal etc. But be careful if you are going to Japan Town via public transport, as the bus from union square usually passes by tenderloin (an area to avoid)
They also provide balmain soap which is a nice touch. Overall a good stay.

It’s no small thing to leave your home creature comforts and venture to another city for a quick work trip. Travel delays and transportation challenges, paired with jet lag and other small inconveniences can make for a frustrating trip.
Whenever I go to SF, though, I stay here and encourage my colleagues to do so as well. I am never disappointed. The room is always clean and tidy, the bed is always extremely comfortable, the shower pressure is always great, and the motion-sensores under-bed lights that gently guide me to the restroom in the middle of the night are so appreciated. The little things are big things, and it’s always clear to me that the Hyatt culture is customer focused and cares about “getting it right”. It makes a difference and I am always so grateful to know this is a brand and a hotel I can trust.

This hotel is located right by Union Square and has amazing views of the city and the bay. It's a short walk to Chinatown, great food and shopping options, BART and other public transportation. It's also very close to the Tenderloin so be cautious when and where you walk and park your car.
The hotel lobby has some interesting art pieces, but feels a little old and darker than anticipated. Union Square had an "In Bloom" theme and while some businesses took to this theme, the hotel did not and it would have been nice if it did with some fresh greenery.
The check in process could have been better but staff was pleasant and professional. The executive suite had great views and the elevators to the upper floors were quick. The gym was ok, not anything extraordinary. There's no pool and I believe there's only valet parking as there is no onsite parking.
For what I paid for an executive suite, it did not come with lounge access, breakfast or afternoon snacks. I was given two water bottles at no charge and there was tea and coffee available in the room, which I did not use. The room did come with two bathrooms, one with a bath tub shower combo and the other walk in handicap accessible. They could have been cleaned better but for San Francisco seems acceptable. The room had a pair of very soft robes but a little surprised that there were no slippers. The electric shades were ok, not completely black out. The sofa felt very lived in, so I did put a towel down when sitting on it. It was comfortable just looked dirty. The room would have benefited from an additional chair for the desk so two people could sit together. The lounge chair in the main bedroom also would have benefited if there was an ottoman. I really liked that the floor to ceiling windows could be opened even if it was a slight crack. The bed was comfy and I did sleep well but the inside discolored comforter needed to be completely replaced. Thankfully the bed sheets and pillow cases were very clean.
The decor if I could call the two cheap wall art pieces that, were sorely dated. The wood grain furniture felt like it was stuck in the 90s and early 2000s. Even the metal glass coffee table that divided in two pieces just screams old.
Overall, really great views and wonderful location in the city but not nearly worth the Grand in its namesake. Ok for short stays but still very disappointing.

I stayed 4 nights at the Grand Hyatt and would definitely recommend the hotel. It is in the city center and a few minutes from Powell Station, which allows you to take BART (airport connection in less than 30 min) and the subway.
The check-in process was very fast, and even though I arrived more than 1 hour earlier, I was able to access my room right away.
The room is spacious, clean and well equipped with a mini fridge and coffee maker for making coffee and tea. I found the bed very comfortable.
It is a family hotel, and quiet.
The only trouble I had during my stay was about packages I sent to the hotel. They were not delivered directly to the room but I had to go ask several times, it seems to me that the cost of 5 USD per package is too much, just to receive them.

The strike has been ongoing for 25 days in front of the main entrance. They are the room cleaners, cooks, dishwashers, severs, bartenders, bell persons etc. I guess they have reasons to go on strike and I hope they can find a solution with management soon.

I don't know why that showed up twice.
You can valet or self park down at the Unioq Square garage.
Microwave is a very good idea,as when’s we were there mid April there was no room service,no breakfast lunch or dinner as no restaurant in the hotel open ,a puny stall for in the lobby offering not much, the One up lounge should be called two down instead as it had a surly bloody rude barman and all the food was fried basically and not well as my wife’s chcken wings were not fully cooked or defrosted as they are obviously cooked from frozen as there was still blood in the middle…..FOOD POISONING WAITING TOO HAPPEN…
we should have stayed at the St Francis in the square…would not stay here again if it was FREE ..NO CHARGE
Check-in when I was last there was 4pm and checkout was at 12noon. Depending on the day you could totally request an early check-in as well as a late checkout. But it all depends on their capacity that day.
They certainly can as they did for my family last January
