I booked the Proper hotel after reading reviews of various hotels in the area. We were scheduled to attend a show at the Warfield and I wanted to be as close as possible to avoid excessive walking at night, or having to connect with an Uber (I was not certain how long it would take following a show). The hotel is literally two blocks away and the easiest walk you can ask for. The hotel itself is beautiful - it is very clean and the staff is helpful, friendly, and accommodating. As with other reviews - please understand that this is a boutique style hotel - the rooms are SMALL. But they are well appointed with everything you need. They are quiet and they have blackout shades for nighttime. (as for size - it would be similar to a larger child's bedroom). We had two meals onsite and both were very good, one in room service (the food was actually still warm upon arrival - rare for room service), as well as breakfast at Villon (the overnight oats are incredible). We were only quickly able to have drinks at Charmaine's, but the roof top is very pretty and a nice escape / view of the city skyline. Valet services were on par (cost wise) with anywhere else in the city and again, valet staff was great! They warn you that it may take 30-45 minutes to get your car to you but there is a text option so you can request from your room, or as we did once we were finishing our breakfast before departure. It only took 20 minutes in our case. It was a nice feature to not have to worry about finding a parking garage and schlepping all of our things from parking to the hotel. The area is a tough one - it definitely hurt my heart to see so many homeless folks - they do literally line the streets setting up at night for sleep. BUT - not a single person bothered us on our walk back from the theater. They really do keep to themselves and the only interactions I experienced were a returned smile and a lady on the steps of one of the hotel entrances telling us we had to go to the back because they lock the front doors at night. I will say that was my only struggle - to be so lucky to stay in an opulent setting while others are sleeping on the street and struggling to eat that day. …
If you enjoy interior design and look for a beautiful hotel to stay at - I'd highly recommend SF Proper hotel. I enjoyed all the areas with lovely furniture, beautiful art work. We traveled as a family, and it wasn't very convenient to have a stroller in the hotel, but it was a minor issue really. Everything else worked super well for us. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Delicious food at Villon restaurant and amazing views at the rooftop with very good service. Walking distance from SF City Hall. The rooms have lovely design as well, with attention to detail. I enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel for an enjoyable stay
I heard a lot of good things about this hotel but it didn’t meet the hype. Cool stylish hotel - room was small but nice and reasonably appointed. The service was totally hit and miss - depending on who you interacted with it could be amazing or terrible. I had one person just not want to help me at all. She was totally indifferent to the fact that I was a paying customer. We stayed two night separated by five days. First night was fine but we were put in a handicap room and the floor was soaked after showering. The roof top bar was great. I don’t know - this hotel just didn’t hit the mark for me.
First off, you’re welcomed with wonderful staff and a complimentary glass of champagne. Then when you look around, the hotel decor was so fabulous and chic. The lobby bar was exquisite. The tapas and cocktail bar was adorable and those crispy potatoes were heaven! And the rooftop bar, wow!!!! It was a night to remember. Oh- THE BED was like a big giant cloud. The hotel also had a driver that would take you in a 3mile radius from the hotel up until 7pm. The driver (MR. T) was an experienced city driver that knew all the tricks around. He was fantastic! 10/10 recommend! This place is AMAZING
Great modern room, super comfy bed, quiet, friendly staff, great restaurant and room service. The area is terrible but what can the hotel do about that, lots of homeless on the street. Real problem in SF. Love the design of this hotel, it’s spot on. Will stay here again for sure.
The hotel is beautiful. The staff was attentive and as helpful as it is possible for staff to be. We felt welcome and cared for during our stay. The rooftop bar is a nice place to hang out (bring a jacket!). 24 hour room service, Aesop products, robes, super comfy beds and a well stocked mini bar round out the fabulousness that is Hotel Proper.
What an absolute and utter disaster this hotel is. God for bid you work long hours and are here on a work trip, you cannot get a decent coffee before 7:30 AM and you cannot order food after 9:30 PM despite the website advertising 24 hour service. The hot water in the shower goes cold two minutes in. The rooms are TINY, horribly decorated with furniture that falls apart. And if you are able to get the food, it’s awful - overcooked burgers, cold soggy fries and only four things on the entire menu. We had an awful experience. No light on the room either - dim lamps you can hardly see your luggage when you check in. Stay away.
Hotel lobby decor is stylishly eclectic with thrift shop finds that could benefit from some curating/editing. My room, borderline tight, facing busy Market Street, was exceptionally quiet, bed was super comfortable. 6 niggling city and state taxes on closing bill, especially the vague Daily Amenity Fee were just plain annoying.
A beautiful hotel that is tastefully designed. Staff are super friendly and helpful. The room had the same feeling as the hotel, very tastefully designed and the bed was super comfortable (I slept like a baby). I was on the 7th floor and had a great view of the area. Loved the Cheese Burger and the fries that came with it. Enjoyed my stay for sure.
Proper hotels are such a lovely experience. My stay at their Santa Monica location prompted a booking in SF when it was tine for an overnight stay in downtown SF to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The hotel is beautifully designed and you feel like you've stepped into SF's design past with a modern update. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We had delicious in-room dining. My daughter did not want to leave.
