San Francisco Proper Hotel garners high marks for its cleanliness and luxurious touches that ensure a comfortable experience, as noted by many guests. While the hotel's central location is appreciated for its convenience, some visitors have concerns about safety in the surrounding area. The rooftop bar's stunning views and the hotel's other high-quality amenities receive consistent praise, yet opinions on room size and value are mixed, with some travelers citing overpriced services and unexpected fees. The professional and attentive staff, however, are frequently commended for enhancing the chic and stylish atmosphere of the hotel.

San Fran is puzzle, a maze of emotions, and a land of many uses. A playground for billionaires. Vast swaths of urban decay. Stunning natural beauty alongside piles of trash. It is truly the best and worst of America. And frankly, it's a lot to handle at times. Having a homebase as charming and relaxing as the San Francisco Proper hotel is what made our trip. The structure itself is beautifully renovated and designed and the restaurants and bars make it easy to spend as much time there escaping the city as you'd like. We went to the rooftop lounge and later when it rained we ate at the Villon restaurant in the lobby. Both were delightful. But it's the staff who elevate this hotel from a lovely boutique to an oasis in the urban jungle. The team at the Proper was the best part of our stay. From Mr. Tran the bellhop, who always greeted us with a warm smile and helping hand, to the front desk team, to the servers and hosts at the restaurants, literally everyone went above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time. A sincere thank you to them and we extend our deepest recommendation to anyone considering staying here! San Fran will delight you -- and also challenge you -- do yourself a favor and get a proper hotel in this city!

Diane, Russel and Julia are why I keep coming back to this property every time I'm in San Francisco. They make me feel valued and pay attention to the minor details that make my stay more comfortable. Even the housekeeping noticed my small tube of toothpaste had run out and thoughtfully left a new tube of toothpaste for me without me having to ask! They know my dog's name and make his comfort just as comfortable as my own. The rooms are well-designed for comfort and the food is really scrumptious (get the gnocci!) but the PEOPLE are really the biggest difference. I come back again and again because I know I'll be remembered.

We immediately felt at home during checkin with Mia. After having some trouble finding the entrance we rang the Ring doorbell and had our temps checked as part of the hotels COVID protection. We had the option to opt out of housekeeping to minimize exposure risk. The decor was wonderful and each of the staff were helpful and prompt. The rooftop restaurant is amazing and I highly recommend making a reservation before you go to the hotel as it often sells out. They also provide the room service so we got to sample some of the appetizers on our first night before heading there on our 2nd for the full dinner. Highly recommend both the hotel and restaurant.

In summary, this is a hotel that thinks it is better than it is. At the end of the day, it’s a shiny Sheraton that will try to milk you for every dollar you have. I didn't mind the stay, but if given the option I would have stayed at a hotel down the street for a similar experience at half of the cost. I certainly did not feel "taken care of" or "great service" after staying here.

The basics of the hotels, like a Sheraton, were fine. I had a clean bed in a safe and central location to sleep in. The hotel was located just outside of a BART and MUNI stop, making transportation easy.

They have this app that deludes you into thinking that they care about you. They don’t. Few of the requests I made during the weekend were ever honored. Everything you select on it is an excuse for them to tell you how you didn’t request something properly or how you need to be more understanding. At checkout, they granted a late checkout of 1:00 PM (BTW Marriott Platinum and above, if you look closely, you'll note that Design Hotels are the only hotels where late checkout is not guaranteed), but they knocked on the door every 15 minutes after 11:30 AM to see if I was still in the room. They often did not follow through on promises. For example, they held my bags when I arrived early and told me that I would get a text when the room is ready and that my bags would be in the room. I never got that text, and had to take an extra trip downstairs to get my bags that I could have otherwise grabbed when I checked in.

My favorite part was the consistent nickle-and-dime game. They emailed me the night before asking if I wanted to accept their generous $50 offer for an upgrade, which is supposed to be complimentary for Marriott elites; they neglected to mention that it wasn’t a discount and that the normal difference between the two rooms was $50 (photo attached). At checkout I was told my room rate came with a $25 credit; I grabbed a drink at the bar, and the charge was not credited after I closed my bill so I had to fix this in dispute. Also, after checkout, they tacked on a bunch of minibar charges at 9:00 PM for which I am still in dispute with the hotel.

I had to travel to SF for work in the middle of the pandemic and I wasn't happy about it. But this hotel and its staff were like a little refuge. First, it's beautiful and stylish. Second, the staff were so, so attentive. Diane, in particular, at the front desk upgraded my room just because she could and went out of her way to make sure every interaction was easy. Social distancing was strictly observed, which made me feel better about this trip. The restaurant was closed but the full menu was available for room service, which came very quickly and was good -- worth the money. The immediate neighborhood isn't the loveliest but it is central and convenient, particularly if you have any business in the Civic Center (where the Courts and other government buildings are). It's right at the Muni & BART and all shopping, restaurants, nightlife and distinctive neighborhoods are just a few stops away. I will definitely stay at this hotel again in the future.

As a member of Design Hotels, I had a hard time finding anything unique about this hotel. Sure, the lobby looks like a dark West Elm showroom, and rooms have funky wallpapers. But the bland hallways and the tiny rooms made me quite confused. What’s the theme of this hotel? Does it tell a story of any kind? I don’t think so. Marriott Bonvoy’s Moxy hotels have funky design and tiny rooms, and Proper is exactly that, just with better shampoo.

To make it worse, the hotel charges a $30 resort fee. Not sure what it’s really for since there’s no pool. Maybe it pays for the two Pelotons in the gym.

Titanium Bonvoy members do NOT get welcome gifts of any kind. NOR is there free breakfast or a coupon to make up for it.

The location is, well, I don’t think downtown SF has a “good area” anymore, but if you know anything about the city, Civic Center definitely isn’t the best of all.

Positive: service was amazing and every staff I ran into (including technicians) greeted and chatted with me. Bed is comfy and shampoo stuff is good.

Bottom Line: You can’t just find random artsy furniture, throw them into a tiny room, and call it “design”. That’s not how it works, especially when you charge a “resort fee” for it.

From start to finish, my group had an excellent experience at The Proper in SF. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of downtown and across the street from a Bart station making it SUPER easy to navigate through town during our stay. The hotel itself was designed impeccably and the views from the rooftop are incredible. I really enjoyed dining at Charmain's and enjoying the wonderful food and service. Also, the hotel is VERY COVID prepared, requiring, and providing masks, sanitizers, which put me at ease during these interesting times. Overall, wonderful experience at this stellar property.

We had a wonderful stay at the Proper Hotel in San Fran. The hotel valet and bell staff greeted us quickly and escorted us into the hotel lobby where check in was a breeze. The front desk took the time to acquaint me with the hotel and amenities. The rooms are cozy with very comfortable beds and hot steaming showers. The soaps and shampoo are an added bonus as they are AESOP with essential oils and a much nicer touch than that of most hotels. Robes are provided and rooms cool to the desired temperatures! The hotel is decorated with beautiful color and design. Room service was quick to respond and food was good. The valet went our of their way to insure our car was safe, and returned daily at our request. Overall the stay was exceptional. Hotel is located in an area where you will feel safest ubering directly from the hotel or using the valet service daily for drop off and pick ups. It would not deter me from staying in the future. I found it to be an amazing gem.

I stayed in the bunk room, it was just me so the room was perfect for one night. The size of the room reminded me of being in a college dorm but super stylish! The bed was so cozy and had a tv on the wall. There are tons of fluffy pillows and blankets it’s like a dark sleeping cocoon. There is plenty of room for two people with just weekend plans. If you plan to spend time in the room the bunk room might not be the best choice. The bathroom is small-a toilet and large standup shower. The design is just perfect and once you start pumping the Aesop products you’re taken away! The technology in the room was also fun. I quickly received toothpaste and reserved a bike with the touch of a button. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I checked out the bar on rooftop-didn’t stay for a drink but it was hoppin! Nice nighttime city views up there! I had breakfast in the morning which I enjoyed. The lobby decor is out of a magazine. I borrowed the courtesy bike and rode all over the city! There isn’t much traffic on Sunday so riding was a breeze. I’m so glad I stayed here and look forward to my next visit. It was a Proper hotel! Loved it! Thanks to all the staff for making my visit lovely!

What an absolute and utter disaster this hotel is. God for bid you work long hours and are here on a work trip, you cannot get a decent coffee before 7:30 AM and you cannot order food after 9:30 PM despite the website advertising 24 hour service. The hot water in the shower goes cold two minutes in. The rooms are TINY, horribly decorated with furniture that falls apart. And if you are able to get the food, it’s awful - overcooked burgers, cold soggy fries and only four things on the entire menu. We had an awful experience. No light on the room either - dim lamps you can hardly see your luggage when you check in. Stay away.

I believe Market St is safe during the daytime. The theater district is of course on Geary at Union Square so you do not want to walk south on Taylor Leavenworth or Jones towards McAllister and the Proper Hotel at night or even daytime as you will be accosted by vagrants. Have the hotel pick you up after theater or dinner. Have drivers let you out at the Mcallister entrance of the hotel. My daughter who is a cop and lives in the city was horrified that I stayed at the hotel but I like it, especially the rooftop bar. The Arsicault Bakery just steps away on McA and 7th is outstanding.
