This is the third time I have visited San Francisco and previous visits had me resigned to accepting that all affordable hotel rooms in this city are on the small side (let's say around 195 square feet on average), and even when paying a bit extra for a larger room, there is not that much more space offered. That was until I entered my Executive King room in the Axiom hotel, which changed my mind! This room is just over 320 square feet, with the extra space allocated mostly to a small living area complete with a couch, coffee table, and second TV. It feels like a standard sized hotel room in other major cities. Here's my overall assessment of the Axiom: Location: The Axiom's location is prime, with the Cable Car turnaround just outside as well as the Powell station underground nearby on Market Street to access both the BART & Muni transit systems. There are plenty of restaurants nearby as well as a very large Walgreen's Pharmacy just a block down on Powell to get any general items. Room: The Room overall maximizes the available space, which is large enough to have a King bed, two night stands, and a set front table set, with a drawer, fridge, closet, and safe. Closet & storage space: The closet is just large enough for 8-10 clothes hangers. Suitcases will have to be put along the walls but they did not get in the way. Bathroom: The bathroom has a very large (really large) sliding door but once stepping inside, it is very modern from the shower, sink, and the light & fan switches. There is also plenty of counter space. Housekeeping: The Axiom provides daily housekeeping. This was most welcome considering most hotels I have visited since the pandemic no longer offers daily housekeeping. Work Desk: The work desk is part of the front table set, with the desk part having wheels which can be pulled out easily. Night Stand: There are night stands on both sides of the bed, with some nice lights above each of them. One of the night stand has a clock and phone. Closet, Safe & Fridge: The safe and fridge are both in the closet. The safe used here looks very state of the art based on the type of display used. Also in the closet are the robes (which are grey and have hoods even), but they are folded and can be found to the upper shelf. Climate Control: Climate control was trouble free. Setting it at 72 degrees F kept the room comfortable. Exterior Noise: There was virtually no exterior noise during the night. I could not hear any noise from the rooms beside us. A truly pleasant surprise! Wi-Fi & TV: The Wi-Fi worked well and was quite fast. External video content can be played on the room's TVs wirelessly if you have an Apple device (iPhone or iPad). There were times when my TV connection dropped but I was able to reconnect easily. Elevators: The elevators are very responsive. Although they are on the small side, I never saw a large group of people needing to use it. Check-in and Check-out: This is the first hotel I have ever been to where check-in was automated and done using a kiosk! Mind you, I did have to respond to an e-mail prior to my arrival after which a QR code is e-mailed back, at which point the kiosk can then scan that QR code and generate the room keys as well as prompt for the credit card for incidentals. Check out was done through another e-mail message that I responded to. If you prefer human interaction, both check-in and check-out can be done in this traditional way. Lobby: The Lobby featured a very popular cafe (in terms of people using it). This too offered a kiosk to order and pick up but we found that not all items were available on it but the cafe's employees was most willing to help customers. Parking: I came in by taxi but I did see that the hotel offered valet parking. Water Stations: On each floor are Brita water stations that distribute filtered water (you will find special plastic water bottles in the room to fill them). There is also ice made out of this filtered water. This eliminated the need for me to buy bottled water. Gym: There is gym at the basement level. It has treadmills and an elliptical trainer as well as free weights as well as a cable weight station. I had everything I needed for my daily exercise. There are also towels, water cooler, and headphones available. Overall: The Axiom is the perfect place for the traveler visiting San Francisco. The comfort, amenities, and location are top notch and I can see why it was voted on the Conde Nast list of top hotels.…
