I had to stay a while at UCSF so I had occasion to stay two nights here.As far as I could find, it was the closest hotel in the price range to UCSF. Clearly not high-end but the rooms were clean and tidy. It's far from fancy but the price is also far from fancy so that's no surprise. It's... More

The Carl Hotel, though outdated, was clean and inexpensive by all standards in SF. Great place to stay if you are dealing with UCSF Medical Center, and you just need a place to sleep. Our son had surgery that was pushed back 24 hours, and they allowed us to move our arrival date back day..on the same day we were... More

Carl hotel provides a great proximity to UCSF. It was a decent stay, not at all fancy. Only plus point which i felt was that it was cheap atleast as compared to its neighborhood. So overall I can say that it was below average experience when compared with comfort of stay and decent when compared with price.

My husband had surgery at UCSF. He had some complications and had to stay longer than expected. My liaison at UCSF booked me a room here. The hotel I was originally staying at had no vacancy. I thank the good Lord that my sister in law was with me. The room was dirty and run down. The noise from the... More

We recently stayed this hotel to visit relatives who live in the Cole Valley area (few blocks away) of San Francisco. We luckily found street parking available when we pulled up to the hotel. (Weekend unlimited parking on the street, weekday 2hr parking enforced.) The rooms all face the street(3 stories) and the stairs are inside the building. The rooms... More

Well we visited here in May of 14 and returned for another fine visit. It was a pleasure to meet Harry the owner and his staff. Very helpful -- -again if your looking for a fair price this is the place to stay. Right on the N line easy to get around. The rooms are small and there is some... More

This hotel is in a terrific neighborhood;the Cole Valley is charming. The staff are extremely helpful and while the rooms are not fancy, they are comfortable and very clean. The double bedrooms are much bigger, but the single room is much quieter. Just bring earplugs to help silence the outside Muni train. You don't need a car in this area... More

The Carl Hotel is probably one of the least expensive hotels in the area right around UCSF campus, and it is on the recommended accommodations list for UCSF patient families and those doing business with the hospital system. As many guests have alluded to already, it is located right on the Muni line, which makes it incredibly difficult to sleep... More

Had to stay here because at the time it was the cheapest hotel in the Inner Sunset/Haight-Ashbury area. This is the strangest hotel I have ever stayed at, just because of the way it was laid out... There basically is no lobby, and the home-like stairs are right next to the front desk. There are stairs and turns in every... More

We stayed at The Carl for one night, booked the biggest room as we needed two separate beds, and we shared one private bathroom. What a strange place this was! The chairs (2) were cloth covered, and were really frightening as they looked as if more than one person had lost their faculties on the seat, gross!, had to place... More
