Hotel Griffon emerges as a charming retreat with an inviting atmosphere and clean, stylish rooms, often highlighted by guests for its excellent location along the Embarcadero, close to attractions and transportation options. While the service receives accolades for the staff's helpfulness, some guests mention noise issues and describe the rooms as cozy yet occasionally small and dark.
The hotel's amenities and breakfast may not impress everyone, but many consider it a good value for a boutique experience in a prime setting.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel Griffon is a great spot near the Embarcadero, Ferry Building, Financial District and Downtown. It's a less expensive option than a few other hotels around but is small enough and intimate enough to feel very boutique like. The public area is small but nicely appointed and there's water and in the AM coffee and tea. Reception is shared with Perry's next door, well-known eating establishment which is great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a drink.
It's an old hotel and the rooms could use some refreshing to the furniture and the curtains but the beds and pillows (extras in the closet) are very comfortable, the bathrooms although small have nice showers and amenities, and there was plenty of storage in the spacious closet and dressers. Updated lighting and desk area had ports for charging electronics and there was good lighting in the room. The staff was very gracious and provided us with a note and a bottle of wine for our anniversary which was a nice touch.
Location can't be beat right on the waterfront and walking distance to many restaurants and things to do around the area. Although there is currently no valet parking or onsite, there is a garage that is very close by, reasonably priced and safe to use. All in all we highly recommend.

Booked a view room for two nights on a Friday and Saturday. Had a great view of the Bay Bridge that was worth the price of the upgrade. The rate was amazing compared to downtown and or major chain hotels (booked through major travel app.)
The hotel is RIGHT on the Embarcadero, so great flat walks with amazing views abound, bring good shoes! The Griffon borders the quiet Financial District and IMO it is in a MUCH nicer/safer neighborhood than other areas with much more expensive rooms (think Union Square.) You are drawn out of this hotel to walk by the water, while other SF hotels make you want to barricade front door due to the various social issues that the city deals with.
The Hotel Griffon is hip and cool with original exposed brick. Yes, it IS an old building, so rooms are not as large as new hotels that have no character, but besides the exposed brick the rooms have bright white walls. Room was VERY clean and the bed and sheets were comfy. From the front desk to housekeeping, the staff was great. Perry’s Restaurant (which is attached to but not run by the hotel) has good upscale food at reasonable prices.
Easy walking access to the foodies dream Ferry Building (farmer’s market on Sat.) Pier 39, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Be sure to visit the Musée Mécanique! Walks to downtown and Chinatown are easy for those with more energy. The Griffon does not have parking, but used secure, safe, valet parking under the Woodlands market (about a 5 minute walk.) Easy Bay Bridge on/off access. Hidden Gem

It's a great no frills hotel with outstanding service (shout out to Gladys! But every one was super helpful and friendly). The partnership with Perry's is great especially being able to charge to the room and the day pass to the YMCA is convenient and better than any traditional health facility in other hotels. And location on the Embarcadero caps off a great stay and experiences highly recommend.

This hotel has some strong positives and negatives:
Positives:
— The location is great.
— The value (including relative to other hotels in the area) is solid.
— The customer service is world class. Special shout out to Juan and Zami, but every single person at the front desk has been extremely friendly and welcoming.
— The beds are very comfy.
Negatives:
— The tech is often dysfunctional. E.g. the only elevator not working, or the room key not working (even worse when both happen at the same time, as happened to me just now).
— Twice when checking in, my Expedia reservation did not show up on the system. The first time (a month or 2 ago) they forced me to reorder the reservation, and I ended up paying a slightly higher nightly rate than what I originally booked.
— Small design decisions are suboptimal, such as the bathroom light making a loud noise whenever turned on, or the shower doors not being good at containing the water.
— The room cleaning is not frequent. E.g. I just left from 7:30am to 3:30pm, and the room was not cleaned.

Dearest Rchard, While I am delighted to see what a wonderful value you found our little Hotel Griffon by the Bay to be and that you encoutered the gracious hospitality you so deserve while sleeping in a comforable bed, I am truly heartsick to see that your stay with us was so very underwhelming in in some very important aspects. We so very much want all of our guests to feel utterly treasured the moment they set foot near to our front door and once inside to find our beautiful little Hotel Griffon by the Bay to be an exceptional option and value as they enjoy our fair City, I am so very sorry that this was not your experience. It is personally painful and so very disappointing to learn of your unhappiness; however, it is also a powerful motivator to grow and improve. We have a steadfast commitment to refining all aspects of our hotel therefore, I thank you so very much for your candor and wish yo. From the bottom of my heart, that all of your future travels meet and exceed your expectations and you are left with only happy memories. With Sincerest Regards, Ann

I booked this hotel expecting a charming boutique experience, as advertised, but it fell far short of that description. In hindsight, I wish I had stayed at the big-box convention hotel for my conference.
The room itself was a major disappointment. While housekeeping was fine, several issues made for an unpleasant stay. The HVAC blower had a persistent squeaking noise that continued into my third night, despite requesting a fix. The room lacked carpeting, giving it more of a budget motel feel rather than a boutique ambiance. The shower handle worked well, but water flooded into the bathroom. Furniture was visibly worn, switch plates and the thermostat were pulling away from the wall, and there was a frustrating lack of accessible outlets. The bed was extremely soft, making it uncomfortable for a good night’s sleep.
The one positive was that the room was quiet—no street noise or disturbances from neighboring rooms. However, that alone isn’t enough to bring me back. Given the misleading description and subpar experience, I won’t be staying at this property again.

Dearest Richards, I am truly heartsick to see that your stay with us was so very underwhelming with the only bright spot being our wonderful housekeeping service. To clarify a few points, I am relieved to share that upon personal inspection of your room, the day you posted this review we found your shower to work perfectly, and of course the thermostat was adhered to wall, and that your light switch plate was in pristine condition. And both our engineer and I found that your heating system was working perfectly with no noise, other than the blowing noise one would expect from a heater. We so very much want all of our guests to find our beautiful little Hotel Griffon by the Bay to be an exceptional option and value as they enjoy our fair City, I am so very sorry that this was not your experience. Hotel Griffon is located at a great location, right along the pier and has a great view. Very walkable to many places and bars, also Perry's is great.
I would like to share my experience with Hotel Griffon here:
My husband and I got married in September. We decided to stay for our first night and also booked rooms for the families. Regina and Brandon took care of all the reservations and any amenities that we needed for the stay. We had two little babies, and parents who needed accessibility. They were very helpful and get things needed very fast. We all know the wedding can be stressful, especially when you don't have a wedding planner and have to do everything on your own. But all the staff were very welcoming, understood the situation that needed early check-ins, late checkouts, changes in reservations, keeping valuables, and be very supportive. We had an issue with a plumbing for one of the rooms, and they upgraded us to a bay view suite! Some family members decided to stay additional night after the whole experience.
As some people would say in the review, rooms can be small and "old", but if you want to stay in a safe area with a view and affordable price, I think it is totally worth it.
Thank you again Regina and Brandon. Will stay with Hotel Griffon in future again! :)

The Griffon has become our go-to hotel when visiting SF. The location cannot be beat for what we come to do, which is explore by foot or public transpo and games at Oracle Park. On this visit I needed some dry-cleaning done and was delighted to know they provided the service for a smaller cost than where I was going to go. This is truly my favorite place to stay when visiting the city and I look forward to every return.

The rooms are immaculate and the location can’t be beat for getting around Embarcadero and easy access to the waterfront. Brandon and Autumn were so kind and helpful — even checking in to make sure my stay was good (thanks, Brandon!)! Outside of the walls being a little thin, the staff, location, and cleanliness of the hotel far makes up for some of the people who speak at full volume no matter the time of day or night! And, certainly not the hotel’s fault. It has been a very convenient and enjoyable stay!

This is my go-to hotel when I come to SF. The location is nice, quiet, safe, affordable, and has stunning views of the bay.
The service is always great, literally no complaints. This time around was extra sweet as Sebastian and Rafael helped us upgrade our room to one with a bay view and gave us slippers. They were just super pleasant letting us know about all the amenities (which there are quite a few!) and it made us feel welcome and taken care of.
We stay here all the time, a few times a year, and every time has been consistently great all around. This was the only time the room was pretty uncomfortable.
Two things: the air conditioner didn’t seem to work so the room got very warm, too warm for me to sleep. And 2, on the 2nd floor bay view room (on the right) there’s a light up sign outside that keeps the room very bright all throughout the night, so it’s impossible to get it dark enough to sleep.
That’s it though! We typically order food from the restaurant which is delicious. We get the breakfast items in the morning and get fresh cold water from the purifiers. It’s really a nice secret spot.

Dearest Ellseralns, It is always so lovely to welcome you back, we are all just so honored that you choose to return to us time and again knowing you will be safely tucked away in a peaceful room with "stunning" views. I am only sorry to learn your room was too warm and the curtains did offer enough coverage to ensure a peaceful night's rest. I am happy to report we have just this week completed the installation of new air conditioning units and a new chiller so our systems are now in prime condition to ensure your room will be cool and ever so pleasant when you return. In addition our renovation is still in progress: we are awaiting the arrival our new curtains which will offer better coverage, as well as furniture, lighting and accessories for our rooms which will ensure a more restful night's sleep ;x). Please know our sweet as pie duo of Sebastian and Rafael truly appreciate your kind words and both they and I are at your service should you require any help in planning your return trip to your home away from home in San Francisco. Until then we wish you and yours springtime days filled with the fragrant smell of blooming flowers and the joyful sounds of chirping birds and springtime nights filled with the sweetest of dreams.
