Had the good fortune of being able to book travel to ATA with a friend at the end of their fishing season (September 6-13, 2020), after the chinook and sockeye runs and amidst the coho salmon run. Instantly felt at home when we were greeted at the runway by Wayne and Jacob at the airstrip and they took our bags. Accommodations were great, and the views from each cabin along the riverfront are spectacular. Every day we got to maximize daylight and fishing opportunities to the fullest extent, and our awesome guide Justin was able to put us on the monster coho and trout both upstream and downstream - and we only saw a couple other boats the entire week! As remote as you can get. The food was spectacular (ate every bite of every course and gained a few for sure!), and I was spoiled rotten by the meals and the overall service at the lodge by all of the staff. The setting along the Alagnak and isolation of the lodge is truly amazing, and if you're looking for a super secluded spot with great fishing that still has excellent amenities, this place is perfect. Definitely recommend.…
This is our second year going to ATA - last year was tough fishing due to unusually low waters in all the rivers in AK. This year even with somewhat lower water (AND COVID!) yet the fishing was good- my husband caught all 5 species of salmon the week we were there! I, as well, had a stellar week catching fish with the helpful instruction of our guide, Wayne, the owner. The cabins are beautifully lined up on a hill by the river and are cozy, warm, comfortable and clean. Sitting out on the little deck outside, you often can see bears in the river below. Last year the food was great home cooking but this year it was over the top! Breakfast is very plentiful and delicious that will get you through the mornings fishing in a cold river. The dinners were yummy with awesome desserts. The staff and guides are so helpful and friendly that you almost feel like family. Highlight of the week was flying to the headwaters of Margot Creek at Naknek Lake which Wayne arraigned for us and 2 other guests. So worth the extra money! I caught the largest rainbow trout ever (and I live on a gold medal trout river) all while watching bears uplake from where I was standing. Some hiked down the river and viewed 8 bears fishing for salmon just yards away. Even while fishing on the Alagnak R. we saw lots of bears ( 8 bears one day alone) and loads of eagles. Wonderful trip and so great to be off-grid and no masks!! Look forward to our next trip.…
I want to thank Wayne, Jacob, and all the staff for what was a truly wonderful two weeks stay at ATA Lodge.besides the constant murmur of the river in front of my cozy riverfront cabin highlights for me were spectacular sunsets and sunrises, catching nine different species of fish, Seeing lots of bears and cubs along the river feeding and frolicking as well as the attentive, professional and friendly staff and guides. They even managed to sneak in a surprise birthday cake for me which was the icing on the cake so to speak beside all the wonderful food that they served.I greatly look forward to going back again and can’t wait to see them all. P.S. Wayne can tell a hell of a story!
My first time to Alaska for my long awaited fishing trip to the Valhalla of salmon and trout fishing. Investigated ATA with friends and got good reviews so I booked. Covid made it difficult but I eventually found a week and made it to the lodge. Flight was not hard, Chicago to anchorage to a small seasonal professional and sport fishing town called King Salmon on Alaska air. Picked up by lodge personnel and last leg was a short scenic prop plane flight of 30 min to the lodge. Is a landing strip and not a float plane. Lodge is first rate, clean, new, well kept, 24 hour hot water, showers, flush toilets, beautiful guest house where we all eat great meals for dinner and breakfast, hearty good, great variety. System is two fisherman to a boat, guides are very experienced and pleasant, take fishing as their craft. Even during this summer which was by all accounts a tough salmon year we caught Silvers, Pink, Chum, Sockeye and even some Jacks and Kings who bit even when they are not supposed to. Also landed Grayling, Char and many rainbow trout, a great multi species week. Had a great week and fulfilled my lifelong dream of fly fishing in Alaska, I hope I can make it back! Wayne and his staff will treat you well but book early to get the week you desire, I think the word is out on this quality Alaska flyfishing experience.…
I spent a week at ATA, and had a terrific time. This review is to reassure anyone who isn't already an experienced angler, that you'll do fine. Great food and accommodations, great hosts and guides, who are more than willing to (repeatedly) explain and demonstrate casting, stripping, hooking, and myriad other things I've already forgotten the names of. I was able to borrow a 'lodge rod', and boots and waders, though I'd certainly recommend you confirm this ahead of time.
