Detailed Reviews
Katmai Lodge Alaska had an incredible location perched on top of the river bank of the Alagnak River. The wonderful staff all greeted as our plane landed at the lodge, they promptly took our luggage and brought it to our room before we were even done
registering and getting our fishing license.
I am not an experienced angler, but with the help of our wonderful guide I caught my fish limit each day. Not only did I catch my limit of fish each day, but I caught 4 out of the 5 species of salmon including a few rainbow trout.
While out on the river the views and wildlife were spectacular. I can not even count the amount of beaver damns larger than an SUV that I saw. Eagles soaring above and landing in gigantic nexts. Moose grazing in the fields with their young, and bears on the shoreline fishing as well.
On the next day we took a fly out to Katmai National Park where we were within 5-10 ft of Brown Bears as they stood atop the Brooks Falls and caught the salmon in their mouth as the salmon tried jumping up the river. While at the park we saw 20-25 bears along with a few Cubs (which were my favorite). An incredible experience to say the least, I felt like I was standing in a National Geographic documentary.
After a long day out on the river you return to the lodge where the dinners each night were prepared by excellent chefs. (I swear I gained a few pounds on this trip). The meals we had while on the trip consisted of prime rib, steak, a full thanksgiving meal, and not to forget the 2-3 desserts each night.
Lastly you return to your cabin (after the beds/ cabin have been refreshed by the housekeeping staff) to watch the sun slowly graze the horizon. With not a building in sight for miles, this truly is one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen.
To wrap it up, Katmai Lodge Alaska is a must visit destination and I nightly recommend to anyone who is considering a trip to Alaska!

Travelled in July with this being our first trip to Alaska which included a 4 day stay, private guide for fishing which started the day of arrival. Staff went out of their way to accommodate your personal taste and made sure your experience was tailored to your wishes. Fresh king salmon was grilled on the boat for lunch while fishing on the river. Staff tailored a private fly out to fly fish trout at a creek 45 minutes from lodge. Landed on lake with a rigorous 1.5 hour hike over marsh topography in waders to the fast running creek (river size) to find the trout which were there because of spawning kings (which were huge). What an experience!! If you enjoy nature and fishing staying at this lodge is a must do while in Alaska!

Let me be the first to say that I am by no means an experienced angler, which makes makes this 5 star trip all the more impressive. With the help of an experienced guide, the whole family can have a satisfactory day out on the river. We certainly did!
The location is stunning (with more to see than fish if you’re so inclined), the staff is knowledgeable and genuinely friendly, the lodging is excellent, and the food is delicious (with desserts that will have you going for a second helping).
It’s also worth noting that the lodge provides a genuine sense of community! Every evening boasts a complimentary happy hour in the lodge where you and your fellow guests can gather around a beverage and an appetizer and swap stories while viewing photos taken by the guides throughout the day. Again, as a young woman with little experience, it was a kick to walk in to the lodge and hear, “wow, that was an incredible catch you had today!”
A week wasn’t long enough. I look forward to many more summers spent on the river at Katmai Lodge.

This is my third trip to Katmai Lodge. Each trip has been an A+ experience and I intend to return again. Lodge, fishing, food, guides, staff, boats, fishing equipment, etc. were excellent as in the past. This trip I took my 19 year old daughter for 7 days. She loved it. Fishing was a little slower than past trips due to the timing of the salmon runs, but that's fishing and beyond control of the lodge. We still caught plenty of fish and brought some home. Katmai does a nice job of packing them and makes it easy to ship fish home. I really have no complaints as I feel this is one of the better lodges and the staff is always so friendly. Matt and Jake were super attentive guides and I'd ask for them again. If you are looking for a fishing trip where you can work, receive calls or check emails, this isn't the place. It's remote and wifi is slow as a result. It's a great place if you want to disconnect. Only flyout we did this time was to Brooks Falls and it was well worth the experience. Bears didn't disappoint. We had another flyout planned for fishing but a medical emergency caused it to get cancelled. In past trips those have been well worth the expense. Overall, another wonderful fishing trip to Katmai Lodge. There's no question I'll be returning soon.

I’ve been fortunate to spend time at the Katmai Lodge over the last few years. Yes, even with the COVID issues, they were able to bring in and staff this wonderful lodge. As an avid fisherman, I have enjoyed the rooms, food and excellent fishing and also the camaraderie amongst the guests. The guides insure a great experience and their knowledge of the river is invaluable.
This last trip June 2021, was with my 2 son-in-law’s and 16 yo grandson. This was a bucket list for me and a trip he and I will remember forever. Very happy I didn’t put this off.
Over the last few years, I have traveled to this lodge multiple times in a single season. If you enjoy the outdoors, fishing, viewing bears and more, this is the experience you must have, KATMAI LODGE !!

Talk about AMAZING! This was so much more than we ever expected. For being out in the middle of remote Alaska and to have running water, hot showers, flush toilets in each cabin and 3 full meals each day, all I can say is WOW!
The fishing was fantastic and the staff is so thoughtful and caring. Top of the line!
We caught A LOT of fish.
A flight out to Brooks Falls to see the bears was just an added bonus and definitely worth a day away from fishing...or half a day really.
While fishing we saw so much wildlife: bears, eagles, fish, beavers and fox.
Bella - the local fox even poses for pictures if you can catch her early in the morning sniffing around the kitchen door.
We went in early August, weather was cool and drizzly but we also had some nice days.

My husband and I have lived in Alaska for 41 years, so this was definitely a Bucket List trip that we had looked forward to for some time. We booked the 3 Day Wildlife Package with my brother and his wife and stayed in the upper and lower quarters of the Eagle's Nest. Charmel was so helpful in getting information to us, answering my myriad of questions and booking our reservations. She even viewed the bear cam the day before our trip to Brooks Falls and adjusted our departure time to ensure the best bear viewing timeframe! When the staff greeted us upon our arrival I felt like meeting Charmel was like greeting a friend I had not yet met. Our bags were delivered to our quarters while we were given a brief orientation and outfitted with gear for our day of fishing. Our accommodations were very comfortable and the food was perfection. Happy hour was an especially great time as people came together after a day of adventures with stories to share. To top it off, guides took pictures of special moments of the day with their clients and all were shared on several big screens around the room. What a great way to develop that sense of comradery among virtual strangers. Rebecca was our wildlife guide. I have no words for the attention to detail she gives to ensuring that the trip to Brooks Falls was all you could hope for. Bob's (our pilot) parting words to us as we headed down the trail were, "Stay as long as you like." And we did! Visitors to the falls during this time of year are fewer, so we took full advantage. After each 30 minute viewing session, Rebecca would get our name back on the list and after a short wait we would be back on the platform watching bears. We were fortunate in getting 3 viewing sessions in before the weather began to turn and we decided it best to head back to the lodge. My husband is the fisherman. Me, not so much. My sole purpose of the trip was to see bears at Brooks Falls which was epic! But much to my surprise, the day of fishing was amazing! We are now planning a return trip to Katmai Lodge for the summer of 2026, but will be booking the 4 Day Wildlife Package. We are hopeful that our children and their spouses with join us in making family memories in this beautiful place.

My husband and I were greeted by the owner/pilot in King Salmon who then flew us and another couple and our luggage 20 minutes to the lodge. I had absolutely no idea what to expect other than what I had seen on the website. It was like being at a high end fishing camp! The staff was so welcoming, food was amazing (Thanksgiving dinner every Monday!) and our rooms clean and tidy. Our guide was beyond belief, helping us with every detail of our day from start to finish. We booked for a full week next year, August 2022! I highly recommend a "fly out" to see the bears catching salmon at Katmai National Park. It was an exhilarating trip!

Haven’t been fishing in Alaska for 30 years. Just got back from an amazing week at Katmai lodge. Lodge was 1/3 full because of Covid, you couldn’t tell by their amazing staff and cooks. Don’t bother bringing waders or fly rods. They have G Loomis fly tackle and top of the line Simms waders and boots. We bought some of our own equipment being avid fisherman. Their stuff was pretty much better than the high end gear we brought up.
Brooks Falls is a must too fly out along with fly fishing The Moraine Creek for Rainbows and lots of bear watching.
Guides are amazing, know matter how good of a fisherman your are. They will coach you along and having catch the fish of a lifetime on your 1st day on the water.
There were 3 other people in our group and this was some of their 3rd trip to Katmai.
Great place, you have to visit!

This was my first fishing trip to Alaska and it was outstanding. Fishing at Katmai Lodge is an experience I will not forget. We were met at the landing strip and escorted to check to get our cabin. Our bags met us at our cabin after we had lunch and picked up waders and boots. We met our guide Ken and headed out fishing. Ken put us into position to catch coho and chum all week. After each day of fishing we cleaned up and headed to happy hour to relax and talk about our catch. Then we went to dinner which was excellent every evening. Reminded me of meals on a cruise. The staff went out of their way to make our stay great. I recommend Katmai Lodge for anyone who wants to salmon fish in Alaska.
