Property manager was helpful and responsive scheduling our trip, and providing information for check in and check out processes. The condo is ideally situated, just north of Lahaina, and very close to the West Maui airport. From the back of the unit, you overlook the ocean. A reef blocks any significant wave from disrupting swimming or snorkeling time, so every age person could enjoy the ocean and the regular turtle traffic pattern. From the front of the unit, you overlook the pool. Tradewinds keep the unit comfortable, which we enjoyed. There is no air conditioner, so the only critique would involve outside noise of other tenants in the evening as windows needed to stay open for circulation. Still, excellent for our two unit rental and large family needs. We would stay again.

If you’re looking for a beautiful condo on the shores of West Maui, we highly recommend Unit 305 at the Makani Sands. This 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath condo has spectacular views of Molokai and Lanai off the two ocean-front lanais (one off the living room and one off the 4th floor master bedroom), not to mention daily sightings of whales & sea turtles. The condo itself is spacious, very clean, tastefully decorated and extremely well-appointed. You can swim & snorkel right out front, enjoy the heated pool out back or hit the nearby beaches of Ka’anapali. Great location away from the crowded resorts yet close to numerous restaurants and shops in Ka’anapali and Lahaina or further north in Kapalua. The owners clearly care about their guests; there was nothing more we could have asked for during our stay on this beautiful island. Aloha!

The resort is located north of downtown Lahaina, which gets you away from the large resorts. The resort is very peaceful and has a relaxing feel. All condos have an ocean view and lanai/balcony. We spent most of our time while in the condo out on the balcony enjoying the beautiful views and sounds of the ocean. We saw whales and sea turtles every day we were there. It was nice to have the option of a heated pool. The manager, Tammy, was very helpful and friendly. The resort and staff deserve a “5” rating for sure.

Although we loved our stay at Makani Sands and would definitely return, Condo #208 itself seems a bit in need of some updating. The screen door going out to the lanai was off the track mainly because it is old and worn. This wasn’t an immediate issue for us because there were no insects, and while we were there, Tammy called a maintenance person to evaluate what needed to be done. Hopefully that will be fixed soon, but that set a tone. Dishes and glasses were a mishmash of sets, although everything was clean and usable. The bathroom was clean and well stocked with good towels but the tile appears dated. One feature we really liked was the counter on the side with the microwave. A few tweaks would make this condo a “wow.”

There are variations in style and furnishings among the condos at Makani Sands. Check YouTube videos of each unit to decide which one is the best fit for your stay.

While this was not our first stay at Makani Sands, it was our first stay in Unit 104 and we felt right at home instantly. The Condo has a comfortable feel about it, was super clean, and contains everything for a perfect vacation. There is a full range of appliances and the kitchen is well stocked with spices and other condiments that make cooking meals easy and delicious. The outdoor barbecues were put to good use nightly as well. Days were spent relaxing on the chaise lounges or snorkelling right in front of the complex with turtles, tropical fish, and even eels. Even though we travelled around the entire island, Honokawai has a great variety of stores, shops, restaurants and food trucks, and both Lahaina and Whaler’s Village are a short drive away. Tammy at the front desk went above and beyond to juggle the dates for our stay as we navigated cancelled and changed flights. She was as genuinely happy for our successful arrival as we were. Our stay confirmed just how much we missed Maui and especially Makani Sands, and we have already started to plan our next trip!

Be aware of these people, Tammy in particular (very rude), web page had a price and offered discount because of major construction and when i went to book they would not honor the price and it was clearly on web site. Beware, if they will do this on booking they will do this on all aspects or charges of stay, such as trying to claim missing items or towels in unit and charge you for them or saying you damaged something when you didnt and try to charge you for it. Just beware of the shady business practices, Plenty of other places, shop around

This place was soo soo good! We usually stay on the Keihei side at the Maui Vista. But with Lahaina shut down? The prices to stay there were ridiculous this time. This is only the 3rd time I have stayed on the Lahaina side.(This place we stayed was actually in Napili-Honokowai, So close to Lahaina but the part where all the condos are actually on the Ocean side vs across the street from the Ocean. And it's really really great to wake up to sound of waves, the sight of the ocean and be able to just walk down the backsteps into the ocean.

Beautiful location right on the ocean where the sea turtles swim by daily. Pool area and area behind the condos was always clean and inviting. The condo itself was very welcoming and clean. It could use an update on the furniture it was a little old and uncomfortable after sitting for a little while. The beds were clean and comfortable. We had 6 adults and there was plenty of room for all. I would recommend it your condo faces the west and had the most beautiful sunsets daily. There was a puzzle that we all worked on and completed it.

Good budget choice for a longer stay oceanfront condo on West Maui(paid $105/night for a February, 2004 month's stay). Good oceanfront location with a small beach you walk down to in front of a seawall. Larger Honokowai beach park is down the street. All rooms have an ocean view; you can see Molokai and Lanai from your room. Bottom 2 floors are single units, top 2 floors are duplexes. Units have cable TV, phone, full kitchen, washer/dryer, private bath. No A/C, but rooms have louvered windows and ceiling fans, and big screen doors onto balconies(trade winds cool the room just fine, and it's nice listening to the surf). Units do vary, so check pictures on their website to see which unit appeals to you the most. BBQ grill outside was handy, as well as short walk (or drive) to ABC convenience store, or Star Market down the street(other markets also nearby in Napili or Lahaina; or you can stop at Costco by the main airport in Kahului on the way in for bulk items). Condo is in a good West Maui location a few miles north of the luxury resorts on Kaanapali Beach and the town of Lahaina.

We (two adult couples) shared one of the threeBR condos at Makani Sands for two weeks. This is a two story unit, sitting above a one bedroom, ground floor unit. MasterBR is ocean-front with its own lanai and ensuite bath, king bed, flat panel TV and ample closet and drawer space - very nice.

Second top floor BR also has king bed, and ensuite bath, but is noticeably smaller and not well lit. Closet but no dresser/chest. Outside sounds flow through the jalousie windows at all times (street traffic (cars, trucks, buses), substantial pedestrian traffic, noise from Makani residents and parking lot, as well as residents talking at the condo next door). This BR houses the a/c units for main floor and this floor. When air is on, the compressor masks the outside sounds with what eventually becomes 'white noise'. When it is off (ours was broken for a few days), sleep is unlikely in this BR. We can tell you that about 20 elementary/middle school kids get their school bus directly in front of Makani Sands - at 6:30am , and that there is a rooster within earshot that starts his morning before 5! Overall acceptable as a two adult BR, but barely so.

First floor has third BR with twin beds, closet and dresser. We used it for storage. Working washer and dryer, toilet with sink, functional kitchen with working appliances and ample furnishings, 6chair dining table, sofa and loveseat, two cushioned chairs and a TV are eased into this floor space. Overall a bit small/cramped seating for four adults, in part because the loveseat foundation was broken and therefore unusable.

Lanai has four cushioned chairs and a table, plus ever-present, sometimes astonishing views of whales showing off everything from full breeches to flipper slaps, turtles at the shore every day, snorkelers in the reefs just off the beach, sun all afternoon and great sunsets. Fantastic!

There is a sandy beach entry in front of the condo building, but no beach to lie on. The water comes right up to the retaining wall that overlooks the beach. Plenty of chaise loungers and seating on that wall, plus grills for general use.

The pool is off the parking lot in front of the building. Small but clean and functional with several lounges and chairs. Parking for each unit, though the spaces are small here and just about everywhere in West Maui and beyond.

Every home/condo (including mine) can have problems and issues - foreseen and unforeseen. However, we aren't usually charged several thousand dollars to experience them.

Upon our Saturday arrival, this condo had 2 (of 3) clogged toilets and no hot water. It took until Monday to have these issues addressed. These issues did not resurface.

The world's second biggest cockroach showed up in the kitchen during the first week. The world's biggest cockroach stopped by briefly during the second week. Both are in cockroach heaven. [The owner's response: 'there are lots of cockroaches, so you are lucky to only have two'.]

Two of us were locked out while on the main floor lanai when the lock self-locked after we pulled it closed.Fortunately, one of us was in the condo to unlock the door each time. [The owner's response: 'I thought that had been fixed'.]

The a/c units are operated by timers - one on the first floor and one in the master bedroom upstairs. Each timer can be set for a maximum of six hours, although the upstairs timer did not appear to last that long. We only need/use the a/c at night. To have a/c through the night, someone must wake up and reset the timer. Please remember: When the a/c shuts off, the people in the second upstairs BR can hear every single sound outside the condo, will wake up very quickly, and come in your bedroom to yell at you and hit you with pillows for not resetting the timer.

Like the condo generally, the a/c system is getting on in years. Two days after we arrived, it stopped breathing for three days until it was resuscitated by an a/c tech. Though it took 3 days to restore it, the on-site condo manager arranged for the tech services promptly. Once fixed, she told us we couldn't lower the thermostat below 75. Turned out that was her idea, not the tech's. A/c worked fine in the high 60s for the rest of our stay.

This condo has some strong points, but has some significant faults and weaknesses as well. In addition, the impact and effects of condo issues were never acknowledged - by the onsite manager or the owner. Based on our experiences, we simply did not get what we paid for.

I should preface by being clear that we had booked into unit 101 originally and discovered just before we flew out that due to electrical problems the condo was unavailable. As at our departure on December 19th the issue still didn't seem to be resolved.

We were therefore offered three rooms on the second floor (UK readers, Americans refer to ground as the first floor, so this for you would be the first floor - one above ground level). We opted for 202 since it was close to the edge of the building and near to the stairs, which was important for lugging groceries around and accessing the garden/beach area. 202 has a large HDTV which has HDMI inputs useful for iPad owners and such to stream media, but also has a SD card slot which is useful for viewing snaps taken during the day on a digital camera. The apartment is modern and has a very large, firm bed. There is no bath, just a walk in shower but it is of good quality. The apartment is well stocked and has plenty of "backup" supplies of things like light bulbs, which in fairness you don't always see in owner-let arrangements. The lanai is well appointed with a table and chair set, and lounger, above the standard usually seen. Sadly the lanai is spoiled by an obtrusive (new) balcony which sits right at eye level and ruins the view - there does of course need to be a rail but in choosing to match the front and rear balcony rails the view has been detrimentally affected.

Worse than this though has to be the noise experienced in this unit. Every single noise made by the occupants of both units 302 and 102 will be heard - every loud footstep, drawer being opened, TV turned and conversation had on will echo in this unit which drove me absolutely mad while we stayed there. If you're used to noise you won't find it an issue - but to illustrate the point, the OWNER of unit 102 on one night had his TV volume turned up and was shouting at the show he was watching until well after midnight; sadly a call to the property manager failed to rectify his behaviour and I lost a night's sleep. Having stayed in 102 previously we were shocked at his callous and frankly disgusting attitude toward other tenants. Be warned that 302 is a dual-storey unit and will be family occupied - unless you're not planning to spend much time in the unit, watch for the noise levels as this is not a relaxing apartment to stay in. Finally, there was an obvious layer of dust over the surfaces in both the bedroom and living quarters, which isn't really acceptable.

Unit 106 suffers exactly the same noise issue, but from 206 only. Since many apartments are tiled it makes sense that sounds will echo - they really do go right through you though. The redeeming feature of 106 however is that is has direct beach access so you have some escape while your neighbours rearrange their furniture and invite Herman Munster over for wrestling matches with Bigfoot. The bed in 106 is smaller (maybe even a double, not sure) and is very soft - and very low to the ground. The toilet also seems low to the ground so bear this in mind if you have back trouble. The unit itself is admittedly dated and will surely be soon due for a refurb, until then expect ants in the bathroom (this is NOT unique, you get this all over Maui). There is a tub but hot water is not an indefinite resource so plan for shallow soaks or lukewarm ones if that's your thing. The washer/dryer unit here is a separate-operating unit (unlike 202) so you can run laundry and drying at the same time. The dishwasher is awful, expect to hand clean most of what you use.

Murphy's Law dictates then that something else had to go wrong with 106 - and for us it was the plumbing, on Saturday night. The drains are shared between the units in a column - so 106, 206 and 306 all share pipework and when something backs up further down the system, the ground floor unit knows about it. To be blunt, we had food waste and other detritus backing up into the sink all through Saturday night and all day Sunday - we couldn't get anyone to look at it as the new owner had switched phones and not activated the line, and there is nobody on-site on Sunday. I don't mean to be gross, but at one point a dead cockroach floated up in the sink, that's just something you shouldn't have to see. The smell of the backed up water was just awful, we were glad to leave on Monday.

Elsewhere in the complex, work seems to be largely done on the renovations and the grounds are looking great, with a exterior beach wall and sand on the beach again (!). There are new gas tiki lights which give a great ambience, and the noise from the work was minimal, however it was a little disruptive as some corridors were taped off from time to time. The pool remains a tranquil and little-used refuge, even though it's at the front of the building it gets plenty of sun and has lots of recliners - and it's right outside unit 106.

Overall we have struggled to see the value proposition from Makani Sands this year and will not be returning next year. Though the rental manager Roseanna and the building manager Patrick are very helpful and responsive (they really are!) they're just not being properly supported by the unit owners, the disparity of standards between units is too high and the noise between floors simply must be addressed. We came to relax, we were glad to be leaving - that's not good.

No AC, but we stayed there a week over Memorial Day. With lanai doors open (third floor) we were very comfortable. But we live in Hawaii, perhaps we’re more humidity acclimated. The three from the desert of San Diego never complained about lack of AC.
