Hale Kai means "Home by the Sea" in Hawaiian, and we are well named since we're located right on the West Maui coastline where we feature scenic views of Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi directly offshore. Conveniently situated midway between the Ka'anapali and Kapalua resort areas, we're just a 10-15 minute drive from most any West Maui attraction. We are located in real community with a local park, a thrice weekly Farmers' Market, and numerous, reasonably priced stores and restaurants, all within easy walking distance. Come stay with us and know what it is to have lived Hawaii instead of merely visited there!

This is a great budget condo. The lanai is not as private as we like because both sides are open to the neighbours on either side and the pool is elevated so sunbathers on the pool deck seem very nearby. They kind of spoil the beautiful view but we hung towels to give them and us a little more privacy. Since the pool is elevated the rooms below on the first floor have no view at all - definitely glad we were on the 2nd floor. We could watch the sunset behind Lanai from our lanai. The walls are thick so didn't hear the neighbours. The surf was very loud during our whole stay so that helped. Everyone is friendly and the office manager is very helpful. The mattress is very soft and the traffic noise from the road is very loud - even the surf didn't drown it out. The kitchen came with everything we needed except there was no sugar, tea or coffee - only salt and a few other leftovers. We loved the location but the park next door was always busy even though it was much too wavy to snorkel. Only saw one whale far far out in the distance. We will stay here again if we have the chance because the price was great. The free internet worked great. There's paid laundry beside the office. We didn't use the pool or BBQ's. There was a beach bag and some boogie boards and beach chairs in the closet but no snorkeling equipment. We didn't need or miss airconditioning.

I don't even want to write a good review, cause I want you all to stay away and have it for myself.
When it says Lahaina, that's misleading. It's two full free exits past Lahaina in Honoapiilani.
My husband and I stayed in a one bedroom here, and I cant wait to return. I felt most like a local and not some touristy trap. We rented a one bedroom, slept 2 only, on bottom floor. Local markets and shopping right across the street, all walking distance. The Island Market style ABC store is a ways down, we drove there.
What another posted said about no view on the bottom, they're wrong. Our view right out to the pool and ocean was ah-mazing. I'd leave those blinds open 100% of the time if the husband let me. No privacy though from others using the pool and walking by, you're right there. I liken it to a Melrose place sized community. You're all facing the pool, there's no fencing between your door and the outdoors, just small side walls. Community BBQ available, and super private usable beach. Your small beach is for your condo complex and the neighboring. First week in January, and I saw 3 other people out there the whole week. There is coral when you walk out, but it's a nice shallow shelf you can walk around, snorkel (turtles do show up), or just float.
Its typical West side windy in the afternoons.
The building is definitely older, like 60's. Some of the condos are super updated, the one we stayed in was updated and still had that old feel.
I HIGHLY recommend any of the units facing directly towards the ocean, the ones where you see the ocean in the distance are on the side facing a public park, and they're not any cheaper for the lack of great view. Face the pool/ocean or go home :)

My wife and I just stayed here last week for spring break and absolutely love the location and view. The bed was comfortable... having a kitchen was awesome... looks like newer bathroom fixtures and a nice hot shower. Living room and deck have awesome views and the location is great! The property also has laundry facilities and boogie boards and books to borrow.

Nice to be off the beaten path away from the giant resorts... but within walking distance to their restaurants and stores. Several other closer shops and restaurants also just blocks away and turtles everyday at the Hale Kai private beach front seen from the deck. The property manager and staff were all friendly and loved having the pool right there overlooking the ocean! Even saw some whales in the distance several days.
Great and relaxing experience!

We had a great stay in #215 at Hale Kai. Upon arriving to the condo we were greeted with an amazing view of the ocean from our balcony, there was music playing, fans blowing, and the place was very clean and well stocked. Front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. Pros: location and access to the beach park next door as well as the Natural Foods store and other shops. Parking is easy. We liked that this place is small in comparison to the big resorts, low key and family friendly. The kitchen and bathroom are updated and everything worked well, the bed was comfortable and the balcony is great for watching whales and turtles. There is only one drawback with the noise from the street (we had one night of cruisers revving up their engines), but this comes with the convenience of being close to everything. If you are a light sleeper this may bother you, but I live in an urban setting so it’s normal for me. We will definitely stay here again.

Book directly with Hale Kai and not with a property manager. All of the units looked nice except for 109 which was noisy, dated with broken windows and screen door. We booked with an outside rental company and felt the condo was misrepresented.

Wonderful place to stay for big family trips. Plenty of room for us, two kids, and grandmother in one unit with other family staying in another unit. Great location next to a park with a beach my kids loved and plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Will definitely stay here again.

My wife and I visited Maui in May 2005 on our wedding anniversary and stayed in a one-bedroom condo at Hale Kai for four nights.

With a separate living room and bedroom, our condo provided more space than a comparably priced hotel room (The low season rate for our unit was $115 a night). It was nice to have a full-size fridge for lunches and leftovers and the option of cooking an occasional meal in the kitchen. Our unit did not have air conditioning, but the windows, ceiling fans, and shore breezes kept us comfortable at night.

Hale Kai consists of a pair of two-story buildings; one overlooking the oceanfront pool and another (where we stayed) overlooking Honokowai Beach Park. Because of the open space provided by the park, even these units have a clear view of the ocean and the islands of Lanai and Molokai. The pool is small but uncrowded; there was always a chaise and umbrella available when we went to the pool deck. The well groomed grounds are planted with plumeria and other tropical plants. A laundry room is on-site, and in a nice touch, has shelves filled with books for residents and guests to borrow. The parking lot was extremely convenient - we never parked more than ten or twenty yards away from the door to our condo.

We really enjoyed the Beach Park and the neighborhood surrounding Hale Kai. In the mornings, we ate breakfast on our patio and watched children play in the park while waiting for the school bus. In the evening, local families and tourists would gather for barbecues while watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. A coffee shop, market, and snorkel rental are right across the street, and more dining and shopping are a short walk away. The tourist district of Lahaina is ten minutes away by car.

We did have some negatives. The beach itself is scenic, but there are better beaches on Maui for snorkeling and sunbathing, such as the nearby Ka'anapali. We occasionally noticed noise from cars on Lower Honoapiilani Highway which runs right by the condo, but the road is somewhat misnamed; it is actually a small two-lane road which bypasses the main road (Route 30) and traffic is relatively light.

Hale Kai is a condo, so you're not going to experience the same level of comfort and amenities as a full-service resort. But the location and value can't be beat and everything you need is close at hand. All in all, we found Hale Kai to be a perfect "home away from home."

My family recently visited Maui and stayed at the Hale Kai. Our condo was close to the beach, only the third unit in from the water on the ground floor. This allowed my sons to come and go to the beach through the sliding glass doors and to the pool through the front door. The unit is immediately adjacent to a public beach park which caused me some concern, but it turned out to be a nonissue. One of the nicest things about the condo is falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing against nearby rocks. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the staff were fabulous. The units are not air conditioned which caused one of my sons some distress. He was unable to get into the island mentality of enjoying the trade winds, the cool breezes in the evening. Other than that, which is the flip side to the intimate relationship to the ocean, I would highly recommend the Hale Kai to anyone wanting a great vacation at a great price.

We always enjoy staying at the Hale Kai. For the money, it is the best deal on west Maui. The ladies in the office are so friendly and they have lots of info about what to do, and the Sunday hors doeuvre party by the pool (not every Sunday, tho) is wonderful. We love going there. Also the farmers market across the street is great.

However, this is a condo, not hotel. No room service or maid service if you are there for less than a week or so.

Condo 107 at the Hale Kai is amazing and I'm very glad we stayed here for 9 nights. It certainly is a modern home by the sea and we are impressed with the decor and the most amazing views..

Definitely worth the trip and the Condo's entire feel is modern hawaiian, the Hale Kai is in a great spot across the road from a great coffee shop and down the road is the magnificent Ono Tacos and a good supermarket The Times.

Loved it and we will return :)

Thank you for choosing our condo, (Hale Kai #107) and great to hear it was "worth the trip" from down under, West Australia. We are very pleased you found we have the "most amazing views"!. Our condo is a short stroll to an organic market (fresh local produce!), great dining and wonderful fresh Maui coffee. We look forward to hosting you again :) Mahalo, Mike Wall #107

I think most owners go through the Hale Kai website. It's a condo owner's coop- erative, I believe. We went through the association website. FYI Best units are facing pool.

We didn't have to go too far out. A turtle swam by us about 50 yards out- there's a shop almost across the street that rents snorkel gear, and they gave us a map with their recommended snorkel spots.

Hi do you have AC and WiFi?
Answer from Matt M
Lahaina, Hawaii
Thank you for your questions. Yes, our property has WiFi at no additional charge. As to AC, of the units managed by HKR LLC, there is one, Unit # 211, that has it. Our proximity to the water and the afternoon trade winds provide us with a natural air conditioning though, so most of us have not found it necessary to have it installed.
Answer from Matt M
Lahaina, Hawaii
We're expecting some solar panels to be installed on the Ocean building some time this year. The timing is pending permit approval. We don't anticipate this amounting to much however since the footings were already installed when the roof was replaced in December. Other than this, there isn't any construction or repair work that we're presently aware of that is scheduled for 2015.
