The funny thing is, it felt like I was staying with family by the end of it :)
Staying in Nona Lani Cottages was amazing! We stayed in Cottage #5, one of the garden view cottages and it had everything a couple needed for a week of relaxation and exploration. Full kitchen, mirrors, bed, massive shower and bathroom, the lana’i (porch) was awesome for breakfasts, and it’s proximity to the beach is unbeatable. It’s located in the quieter area of Kihei, so at night if you leave your windows open, you can hear the waves crashing on the sand.
I mentioned close proximity to the water, and I mean less than 30 seconds away. All we had to do was cross one street with our boogie boards and hit the waves just like that. And we even saw a turtle up close in the water, and whales off in the distance. And with the location being westward facing, the sunsets are remarkable! Also if you plan to snorkel - some of the best spots in Maui are literally 15 minutes away, which makes getting up in the morning to beat the crowds not too tough at all!
The property itself is not what you expect if you’ve ever stayed on Maui or in Kihei before. Each of the 8 cottages are a good distance from each other, and this privacy is worth every cent. We stayed in another location on this same trip and the noise of neighbors above and next to us was unbearable. The cottages truly give you a place to recharge, find yourself, and relax. There are lounging chairs available to sunbathe on, picnic tables and bbq’s if you’re thinking of cooking some fresh fish outdoors, and beautiful gardens to look at local and native plant life! Also, depending on the season, fresh fruit might be available - our cottage had a banana tree that probably was going to be ripe in 2 weeks. Some other plus sides are the on site laundry facilities, outdoor shower on our cottage was awesome to rinse off the sand from the beach, and parking was right on site.
I would equate staying here to staying at a home away from home. The people at Nona Lani Cottages treat you like family (and it’s family owned and operated for 50 years!), and so don’t hesitate to ask them any questions. I can’t imagine visiting Maui and staying anywhere but here when I’m not staying with my own family, because these people made us feel like family.
Mahalo to Elena, Val, and of course Nona for making us feel at home!
The kitchen met needs for easy meals. Dual heads in the shower was delightful!! The gardens were thoughtfully maintained. Soft, cool grass under bare feet is a thousand times better than a carpeted foyer!
Our cottage also treated us to two original paintings by Nona, the proprietor. The warmth of aloha flowed as effortlessly from these as her handshake and embrace.
All in all I would not stay at this facility again and would never stay in Hawaii without a pool again, but I knew there was no pool so that is on me. If you go into staying here expecting more of an Air BnB feel then you won't be too surprised, I didn't expect a luxurious resort but at that price I did expect the toilet to work and it be comfortable.
The water faucets were hard to use and it was generally a depressing place to stay. This was our 4th trip to Kihei and we always stayed in condo's before. Our experience was bad and we'd never return to this place.
"We loved the suite which is close to the parking area, a short walk from the beach. (cottages are closer) The office is open 9-5."Read full review
