The staff was friendly and very helpful, but the room, 612, is showing its age. The king size mattress frame was not attached to the headboard so it tended to shift as we climbed into bed. The mattress itself is soft and lumpy. We grew used to it and slept well. The kitchen is dated and needs some help. It was hard to reach the plates and glasses from the cabinet, there were no teaspoons only larger serving spoons. Again, not a big problem so we didn’t address it. But if you had a child, they couldn’t use them to eat their cereal. Again, the room, needs refreshing. New paint, fixing things in the kitchen and bath, etc. a table would be nice. Truthfully, I shopped for price and location, and it satisfied us. And now reasons to stay here. It’s across the road from the beach, and we’ve seen some amazing sunsets standing at the stop sign. So if you don’t require a 5 Star resort, and you’re on a budget, Kohea Kai is a nice place to stay.

I stayed for one night on December 14, 2022. It is a smaller and older property, but I found it to be very clean. I was upgraded from a standard room to a Junior Suite Room 323.

I think that my room had been renovated. There was a small kitchenette area with a microwave, mini refrigerator, and coffee maker.

The room was bigger than I expected. The king bed was a bit too soft for my liking but there was a assortment of pillows to choose from. There was a desk and 2 chairs. The ceiling fan and air conditioner worked really well. The lanai had a table and 2 chairs. There was peekaboo view of the ocean.

The shower was large. It took a few minutes for the hot water to get hot but not a big deal. The toilet seat kept shifting.

The pool is small, but the beach/ocean is literally across the road. There are chairs, beach umbrellas, and coolers to borrow which is a huge plus. I saw that there were 2 bikes and helmets that you can also borrow, after signing the waiver.
There is also a lovely garden area in the back. A BBQ and hot tube are available to use, but you need to reserve these.

There are complimentary breakfast and afternoon snacks available. I think that there are only 2 restaurants within walking distance, but you are walking literally on the side of the road alternating with sidewalk. One must be careful as the road is very busy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carol and Lucy who were at the Front Desk. Two amazing human beings. Carol offered me some of her personal food after I told her that I was so hungry and disappointed that there were not more food options/restaurants within close walking distance. When I was speaking to her the next day, she said I should have taken her car. What? This woman doesn't even know me. Lucy was so kind in answering my numerous questions and requests. She was so patient with me, and allowed me a little extra check out time after I told her that I rode the bike to so many places and was in desperate need of a shower before checking out. Thank you Carol and Lucy for being so kind, gracious, and helpful to me.

Amazing staff, room, atmosphere, and location! The room was very clean and I was very impressed with the updated bathrooms. When I come to Maui for work trips I typically would stay at the Marriott, however, I found my new preferred place to stay when I come into town! 10/10 would recommend!

We would never recommend this hotel to anyone and only writing a review to warn others in order to not have you go through what we did. Customer service was inadequate, rooms are disgusting and as others have stated A LOT of false advertising. Our door lock was broken and would not function, did not feel safe, told the front desk and nothing was done. Not even a offer to move us to another room. Room was not cleaned beforehand or during our stay even though we requested housekeeping. Shower was so deathly we had to request a mat which someone did drop off for us. Mold, mildew even moss (something green) growing places in the room from all the humidity. Images for our suite showed a stove which was absent. The staff tried to tell us they are only for suites but I mentioned we had a suite and showed the pictures from Choice Hotels depicting the stove in our suite selection and all they could tell us was there is no stove in your room. We mentioned our concerns to the staff and nothing was attended to. No one even asked how our stay was when we checked out, not sure if that is customary since the rooms are in such terrible condition. I have seen positive reviews for the big family suites. I would say the staff most likely spends all their time and money taking care of the most expensive suites and not the other rooms unfortunately. Pool and hot tub were not clean and pool is very small if another couple or even just one other person is in it, not comfortable. This wasn't an issue for us because we did not come to use the pool but in case you are. One last thing they are developing a new resort or something next door so the construction noise is very loud and constant. This was a very special trip for us and Maui is amazing. We recommend the island for sure, we had an incredible time just not at this hotel!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I apologize for the inconvenience you had experienced during your stay with us. I am just now hearing about your experience and I can assure you that had it been brought to my attention, of course we would have done our very best to move you to another room. I am not sure why this was not offered to you during your stay with us. I will definitely speak to my Front Desk agents to better handle these type of situations because we definitely do not want to have our guests leaving unhappy about their time with us. Thank you again for sharing, as well as your stay with us. We do hope that you will think about visiting us again so that we can have a chance to better serve you. I couldn't understand why some people loved and others hated. Now I do.

We booked Friday and Sunday nights, both on points. Friday’s room number was 315.

When we walked in the room reeked of mold and a flowery cleanser. My husband’s
allergies immediately kicked in. The room was run-down and small. The walls were pock marked with holes and spackled-over holes. The curtains looked like they had been balled up for weeks and then hung. There was visible mold in the space under the air conditioner. The bathroom window was opaque but my husband said he could still make out that I was in the shower. The parking was a single one-way lane with no exit, so narrow that you had to drive with your tires next to the doors. The closet door had been removed and a chair placed underneath, so if you wanted to sit in the chair, the hangers were right above you. At one point during the night, my husband wondered aloud how many people had died there.

We tried to cancel Sunday night, but were not allowed to. I begged the desk clerk, asking if there were any newer rooms that maybe didn’t smell so strongly of mold. We were put in room 621 in a different building. What a difference! No mold, no repaired holes in the wall. It was a bigger space.

On the map, they are both listed as standard rooms, but they couldn’t be more different. So don’t stay in Building 300. Building 600 is fine. And I can’t speak to buildings 100 or 200.

Last week we stayed at this hotel for one night and I would have to say we did not enjoy our stay. First, we arrived at 3pm and the room was not ready until 4pm. We were assigned room #612 which was on the ground floor and had a king size bed along with a sofa bed. When we got inside the overwhelming chemical cleaning smell hit us. We had to immediately open the sliding glass door for fresh air but after a couple hours the smell still remained. In addition we found the room to be dirty...like walls and baseboards. Also the cushions on the sofa bed were stained. Although the room was dated some of the lighting fixtures had been updated and the bathtub/sink looked newer as well.

We did like the brightness in the bathroom as well as the sheets for the king bed. We also thought all the staff we came across were very friendly and helpful.

This is a 2 star hotel and I would definitely not recommend it based on the condition and the total cost of $432 for the one night stay.

First, I want to start by sharing that the front desk staff was very polite and friendly. She made the check in process smooth and was delightful to speak with.

When we checked into the room at first glance it looked nice, however shortly after being there my girlfriend uncovered some very disgusting things. We got in late in the evening and were ready to sleep, so she went to turn down the bed and I hopped in the shower, the bathroom drawers that held the towels were hard to open as they looked to have been painted shut almost. During this time my girlfriend noticed a few hairs on the sheets underneath the comforter. She was rightfully concerned and began to look around the room. She noticed little black dots along the base boards which is usually an indication of bugs, which she then saw one crawl from under the base board. As I got out of the shower she shared what she found and asked me to see if there was another room available.

I got dressed and headed to the front office, the girl at the front desk asked if we had photos to share or if she could see the room to verify, which we agreed to show. She accompanied me back to the room. As we entered the room my girlfriend shared she had checked the bed and noticed staining on the sheets, and there were a few layers of fitted sheets on the bed, one grosser than the other and when doing so revealed bugs were under those sheets. She was horrified and we asked to check out immediately. The front desk girl seeing these things apologized and said she would check with her manager and took photos to share.

Shortly after speaking with the manager she informed me that I could indeed receive a refund and also offered if we wanted to switch to another room. After seeing how disgusting the room we were in was, we did not fee comfortable that another room would be any better and decided to leave and search for a new place to stay.

With this place being right near the beach, I can see the price being attractive, but after the experience on the inside, it was clearly not worth it. Apparently had I done a little more research, there were other reviews noting a similar experience.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback.  We sincerely apologize for the unacceptable condition of your room during your stay.  We strive to provide all our guests with a clean and comfortable environment, and we fell short of that standard. We're glad our front desk staff handled the situation with politeness and professionalism, and we appreciate your understanding in allowing her to document the issues.  Please know that your concerns have been taken very seriously.  To prevent such occurrences, we will conduct a thorough investigation, deep clean the room, and provide additional training for our housekeeping staff. Given the circumstances, we understand your decision not to switch rooms and appreciate your patience during the refund process.  We are committed to improving our services and ensuring a more pleasant experience for all guests. This hotel was a huge disappointment. I had read some of the reviews on this site, and many people were raving about the customer service, the breakfast, and the general friendliness of the staff. My experience was very different.

This is not a very nice hotel, and frankly feels more like a motel than anything else. It is way overpriced for what you get. My room was clean, and I like the hot tub service, but I did not feel that anything else really elevated the place. Customer service was not very good, and not nearly as friendly as I had hoped. Vending machines for drinks did not work and housekeeping was not on regularly, as one would expect for a hotel of this price. They do not even offer breakfast anymore. Also, the parking is extremely tight.

I will not be going back here ever again.

If this place was say $99 a night, I'd probably rate it higher. The reality is that they're currently getting $300+ a night and the hotel just isn't worth that - not even close.

The good:

Staff are polite and the rooms are spacious and clean (maybe too clean, given the extreme smell of bleach after getting housekeeping). Fridge is an excellent size. Wi-Fi works generally decently.

The Bad: Overpriced, poorly located, deceptive title as a "resort," a very tight parking lot, a resort fee that is not disclosed at booking, the bathroom has neither a toilet paper roll holder nor a proper towel rack. We got one tiny bottle of shower gel and no hand soap, making us need to break out our reserve to wash our hands and use shampoo for showering.

Honestly, the Days Inn is better at the budget end and probably cheaper. Definitely not coming back to this place.

We would have loved to stay here, but this hotel really screwed us over. We booked a room through our Credit Card rewards site 3 months ago. The hotel oversold their rooms and decided to tell us our reservation was cancelled 3 days before we leave for Maui.

Trying to book a replacement 3 days before our trip was almost impossible. We booked a “Deluxe Suite Penthouse with Ocean View” through this hotel, but we had to settle for a hotel that wasn’t even near the beach. This is our honeymoon, so this kind of service really puts a sour taste in our mouths. Please think twice about trying to book a room from this place… you might find out a couple days before you leave that they have no room for you.

Aloha and Thank you for your feedback. We apologize but due to unforeseen circumstances with the room we could not rent out the rooms for safety reasons. Our other Penthouses were already booked which we would have been happy to upgrade you to, but sadly had to make a difficult decision by contacting your booking agent immediately which was back in January. We made several attempts to your booking agent to make sure that you were given amicable time and notice to find other accommodation. We were assured that they were going to take care of you and nothing was needed further. Again, we apologize and hope that in the future you will give us a chance to serve you. We paid $233 a night in September. I agree with the previous post-er that it would be nice to face the beach and have a view from the patio. Our first two nights, we were right on the street, which was close to the beach but noisy and a little too close to the water at a time when Hurricane Olivia was threatening. The manager was most gracious in moving us to a second floor room with a better ocean view, and we felt more secure as well as happy with the view. As the last post-er said, we were happy with the breakfast and the staff there.

I apologize but what email are you emailing? We did make some changes to our email so that could be why. But yes you may always contact us directly or through choice. Our number should be online. Our cancel policy if booked directly is 72 hour prior to your arrival and we do require 1 night deposit which is fully refundable if canceled outside of the 72 hour policy. Upon your arrival we charge the full amount at the time of check in. Hope this answers your question or please contact hotel directly (808)879-1261. Mahalo
