We offer two impeccably maintained, fully furnished, ocean view homes in one of Hana’s finest locations. We are directly across from the Maka’alae pasturelands and ocean and also situated within walking distance to world famous Hamoa Beach and Venus Pool. Each home is landscaped for privacy on our approximately two-acre property. We live in a separate home on the property, so you have the security of knowing that your rental is well maintained and though we honor your privacy, we make ourselves available to assist you when needed. Both of our guesthouses have stack washer/dryers, tub and shower combinations (a oversized claw foot tub in Hale Ulu Lulu and a spa tub in Hale Manu) and enjoy the convenience of “on the grid” wi-fi, electricity, free telephone to US/Canada, cable and water. We consistently receive rave reviews on our attention to detail and thoughtfully equipped homes.

Hana is gorgeous! This home is gorgeous! The grounds are so beautiful, with lush greens & vibrant flowers all around you! The sunrise is over the ocean right across the other side of the road. We loved staying at Hale Manu. We used the full kitchen quite a bit, which is also so nice. The accommodations were wonderful. The bed was comfy, the living room was relaxing & the deck & balcony were wonderful to relax outside for star gazing, a meal, just sitting. There’s so much cool stuff to see & do around here. We love the roadside markets/stands. The beach is very close by & it is gorgeous!!! Mahalo to you wonderful owners!!! We would love to come back to stay with you. Thanks for your help in navigating the area. There is a lot of sunscreen already here, condiments, bath/shower were soooo relaxing, there is shampoo, body wash & conditioner also. Loved this stay so much!!

Ulu Lulu was amazing! This is an incredibly cute cottage and perfect for a heavenly visit to Hana. This cottage was one of the original homes in the sugar plantation, and has all the original charm, with modern and smart upgrades. The decor is warm, welcoming, comfy and unique! There are some very unique pieces that truly make the property unique. It is well stocked and has everything you need. The managers are responsive and friendly. Without adding any of the other amazing attributes that Hana has to offer, this cute cottage is a tranquil escape all by itself, you don't need anything else! (but we did enjoy exploring Haleakala National Park, Charles Lindbergh's grave site and Hana Town). Note there is also another home on this property that is a little larger, so between the two, are open to different size groups. I'm sure the other home is just as nice. This is a really good alternative to a hotel when visiting Hana. Highly recommend!

I contacted the Guest Houses for a last-minute, one-night booking so that we could take our time making the drive to Hana, instead of joining the crowded morning rush. We were effortlessly set up in Hale Manu, and my only regret is that we couldn't have stayed longer.

The cottages are located a short 3 mile drive from the center of Hana - just the right amount of seclusion. Hale Manu is slightly elevated, so that there are ocean views from both bedrooms and the bathroom. A gentle breeze was blowing all day and night. The grounds are immaculate. You can stroll around the cottage to appreciate the local flowers, and around July the big tree out front drops delicious avocado gifts to the lawn.

As for the building itself, I have no better way to describe than as the tropical hideaway I would build for myself if I had a jillion dollars. The appointments are very tasteful, with little Polynesian touches throughout. Everything is spotless and shows evidence of forethought to your comfort. Despite all of this, the cottage retains a very rustic charm that easily sets it apart from commercial establishments.

Things that did not bother me, but might bother you:
- no AC. I found the cool ocean breeze and installed fans more than adequate for cooling, in mid-July.
- limited provisions in surroundings. Few choices for groceries or dining. Note: if this is important to you, you shouldn't be in Hana at all!
- a bit of local fauna. I saw a midge or two, some kind of roach, and a couple geckos. Very important: the geckos are your friends. They're cute, good luck, and best of all they eat the rest of your unwanted guests

For contrast, we had previously stayed at the Wailea Beach Marriott for a week. While perfectly comfortable, friendly, and lacking no amenities, the Marriott could not hope to achieve the same romantic charm as the Guest Houses. Highly, highly recommended.

Warning: book ahead if possible. I expect that we were just quite lucky to have been accommodated on such short notice.

Just back from 10 days in Hawaii. Although we enjoyed the Ka'anapali kondo and were entertained by the sensory overload of Waikiki I suspect the memories that will become most treasured are from a precious few sublime days at Hale Manu in Hana.
Me, my wife and our newly graduated 18 yr old daughter were totally comfortable in this home that's decorated & stocked, not by a corporation but, by real people. The cottage has a large porch and yard and provides privacy- you'll to hear the sounds of nature over the sounds of man. The kitchen is well equipped and even had spices, olive oil, garlic and a bowl of fresh avocados (the tree is right outside) and tropical fruit.
Chris gave us enough time to settle in then filled us in with information on the cottage and the area -like where to grocery shop in Hana (it's a short list). I told him what kind of activities we liked and he recommended an amazing hike in Haleakala Park through a bamboo forest to Waimoku falls-this is a "must-do". In the evenings we made our own dinner and ate outside. As night fell we watched geckos gathering for their dinner by the porch light ! With music playing from a Hawaiin music-fest CD we laid cushions on the porch then gazed at more stars then we ever saw in our lives. It's a magic place-thanks Chris & Leokane.
Some recommendations; Grab the provided beach mats and chairs and head down the road a mile to Hamoa Beach, it's the perfect beach. Swim in the natural pools at Oheo Gulch - go early to avoid crowds. Also, if you're looking for a Hawaiian shirt, one of the gift shops in the town center next to the Hana Ranch restaurant has a great vintage collection .

During our Maui vacation we decided to do the trip to Hana and stay overnight in order to have time to see all of beauty the trip to Hana has to offer. We were fortunate enough to find The Guest Houses at Malanai had one cottage available for one night and we contacted the owners who made it so easy for us to arrange our stay. We arrived after a long drive with lots of stops, hikes, photos, etc. and were greeted by a beautiful, private Hawaiian cottage nestled in the back of a large beautifully groomed property with incredible views of the land and the ocean in the distance (the gentle Hawaiian music playing softly on the stereo was a wonderful touch). The cottage was perfectly decorated and clean with all the necessary and desirable amenities. We relaxed on the deck overlooking the ocean and took advantage of the available new gas grill to prepare the wonderful steak (maui beef) dinner and wine from Ulupalakua Vinyards (try their Estate Shiraz - fantastic!) we brought with us. With all the windows open and a soft breeze gently filtering through the cottage, we had one of the best nights' sleep of our trip! The units are not air conditioned, but don't need it! My wife has very bad allergies back home in Minnesota but had no issues at all at this wonderful oasis!

My wife and I spent five nights in the two-bedroom Hale Manu in February 2015. We wanted a home base from which to explore East Maui, and a comfortable retreat to enjoy quiet time with each other. The Guest Houses at Malanai were just perfect on both counts.

We arrived with a few bags of groceries we'd picked up in Kahului. We kept things cool during the drive using a Styrofoam cooler from Longs. We brought proteins, fresh veggies, cheese, bread and wine. All of this turned out to be available (for a price!) at the Hana Ranch store, so don't worry if you don't have time to grocery shop. One exception: the local, grass-fed beef at the Hana Ranch store is delicious and reasonably priced.

Hale Manu's well-equipped kitchen includes supplies of olive oil, coffee, tea, condiments and a wide range of spices. A big bowl of fresh tropical fruit waits for you in the fridge. The house is clean and very comfortable. The decor is cozy tropical, with charming art and a collection of books ranging from large coffee table volumes to beach paperbacks. There are games and a DVD player for rainy afternoons. Large open windows let in the breeze and keep the place cool.

Each bedroom has a single bed -- great for a couple or for young kids. You can watch the sun rise out of the ocean from either bedroom. The outside deck is very private, with a good mix of sun and shade. The deck includes an excellent gas grill.

Your cell phone probably will not find a signal at Hale Manu, although there's plenty of coverage back in Hana. However, the house is equipped with its own wi-fi, allowing you to stay in touch with the rest of the world. You can also use the landline to make free calls to the Mainland.

Most of our initial questions were addressed in a series of printed notes/instructions on everything from phone use to checkout procedures. A few instructions clearly result from the boneheaded choices of previous guests (do not, repeat, do not attempt to hack open coconuts with expensive kitchen knives).

Our hosts, Chris and Leokane, were more than generous with their time, answering every question about where to go and what to do. During our stay, we explored all the way from Waianapanapa to Kipahulu, but the best excursions were right out the front door within walking distance.

Homoa Beach is close by, and Hale Manu provides all you need for a day at the beach. Big, fluffy beach towels, chairs, snorkeling gear -- it's all there waiting for you.

To be clear, the Guest Houses at Malanai are not for everyone. Folks who prefer seeing the sights from a tour bus or who like being waited on hand and foot while on vacation should probably look elsewhere. This is also not the place to hold your fraternity reunion. But if you want to get a sense of Hana as a place, and if you have a traveler's appreciation for what makes a place special, then the Guest Houses at Malanai will be just perfect for you, too.

We stayed in Hale Ulu Lulu for two nights (booked one, loved it so much we stayed a second night). The cottage was extremely well appointed and equipped with everything you could imagine to feel at home. My only advice would be to do your food shopping before the road to Hana as the options are limited in town (we loved Mana Foods in Paia). The setting was lovely, we enjoyed the ocean views and fresh fruit left for us that was picked on the property. Our hosts were very helpful and responsive. It was a bit on the pricey side for us, but worth every cent. Highly recommend this spot!

UPDATE: Following the publication of this review in Jan 2011, the owners agreed with the state of the kitchen, and have told me they have replaced the kitchen items mentioned. I removed the photos of these items.

We stayed at Hale Manu (the two bedroom unit) for four nights in January. I feel the descriptions in Trip Advsor are accurate. And we did have a nice time. However, we thought the owners may be resting on their laurels at bit and not paying attention to details.

For example, It is more than accurate that the kitchen is very well stocked with lots of gourmet accessories. What I encountered were some VERY worn out pieces. The coffee pot needs to be replaced. It is dirty, burned and no longer keeps coffee warm after brewing. Woks also were worn, with teflon areas clearly having been gone for some time. And normal cooking utensils well worn, with holes burned into them, and clearly having seen better days. The Spice Rack has also seen better days. The dill in the rack was dark brown from age and exposure to light. Many other spices were well beyond reasonable shelf life. It wouldn't cost more than $100 to replace these items. My issue is that they clearly needed to be replaced for some time. And for my 4 night stay-they were not.

Some have mentioned the seclusion. Hale Manu is secluded. VERY secluded. Unfortunately, we were awakened by something moving on the porch at 2 am. It turned out to be a PIT BULL. We were told that neighbor’s dogs would show up-we were not informed one is a PIT BULL. Following this incident, my husband and I had a hard time sleeping in the unit given the how accessible and secluded the unit is.

There also appears to be a bird (or something) living in the top rafters of the roof. We routinely heard animal activity at night.

Finally-it is VERY DARK in the unit at night. It is basically hard to see in the place an hour after sunset. For example, we had to use flashlights just to change a CD.

We spent four days here, and it provided a different perspective on the state of the unit. I just honestly think some attention needs to be paid to the unit, its contents, and routine maintenance of the furniture and grounds.

As in other reviews, I do agree the location is great-very close to Hamoa Beach and other Hana attractions.

We stayed in the smaller of the two structures (1 bedroom cottage) and found it to be almost everything that previous reviewers had raved about, except for two nettlesome items. First, the cottage is located about 150 feet away from the Hana Road and the road is not a quiet one (commuter traffic to and from Hana in the AM and PM - plus a steady flow of tourist traffic heading out to Oheo Gulch). Second, the hosts protect their wonderful pooches from harm by keeping them fenced in at their house which is 80 feet away from the cottage, and the dogs bark at every pedestrian that walks by. So, if you plan to hang out at the cottage be prepared to block out the car, bus and pickup truck sounds, and the occasional "woofing" from next door.

The 2-night stay at Hale Ulu Lulu (one of the 2 guest houses on the property) was the best part of my vacation Maui.

It's rare to come across any hotel/property with 100% 5-star reviews. I'm so glad I chose to stay at the Guest House after reading the raving reviews. Leokane and Chris had been great hosts from the time of reservation till the end of our stay.

The one-room cottage (Hale Ulu Lulu) was impeccable and spotless when we arrived. The hosts' taste was obvious in the decor and and attention to detail in the completeness and availability of household/kitchen supplies.

The location is also perfect! It's only a few miles south of town (Hana). We definitely felt like we were away from it all yet close enough to the few dinning choices in town.

The climate in Hana in June couldn't have been better! It's warm but never oppresively hot. It's wet only over night or briefly during the day. The rain showers were very refreshing that made the air cool and a tad humid. A/C's certainly not required. I had the best nights of sleep in Hana with just the ceiling fan.

Overall, the cottage is beautiful and comfortable. The ocean view and huge lawn in front just add to the ambience. When (not if) I return next time, I'd try to do less and enjoy the place more... the quietness, ocean, rain, sunrise and starry night... which is what a small Hawaiian town like Hana should be about.
