The main parking lot for this resort is far from the bungalows, and many guests are brought down to their bungalow by golf cart, as other reviewers have mentioned. We were lucky in that our bungalow was near the small guest parking lot close to the trailhead for the Kaihalulu/Red Sand Beach, so we were able to park close to our bungalow. Note that the path between bungalows is paved but very bumpy, not quite an accessible trail.
There are laundry facilities near the Waikoloa rooms, but no ice machine; for ice you have to ask at the front desk. Wifi and cell service were surprisingly good. Hasegawa General Store and Hana Ranch Grocery Store are close by, but they both have very limited options; if you need groceries for your stay, try to stock up in Kahului before you drive to the tiny town of Hana. Finally, for fast and local food options, there’s a great pod of food trucks next to the general store.
Pool was uncrowded, relaxing way to slide into Hana vibe. Free laundry room allowed us to replenish clothes while enjoying laid-back spirit.
Only reason I can’t give it 5 stars is limited food options. On-property breakfast was beyond great, one of best meals on trip…. Kids still talking about Hawaiian sweet bread French toast! But Hana Ranch restaurant is literally only sit-down dinner in town, and that meal, while good, cost $250 for equivalent of burgers and fries for four. Just can’t see where one would eat if staying more than one night..
The hotel was hard to find as no large signage—but that’s one of the joys. Really low key, low density and gorgeous. The huge grounds are breathtaking as is the topography. The green covered hills in the background add to the beauty, as naturally does the lava rock and crashing ocean waves on it.
We splurged on an oceanfront premiere room and it was totally worth it, and highly recommended. The covered deck was huge and perfectly positioned for the gorgeous views. The huge overhang protects from rain and sun and feels like an extension of the ginormous room. Spent most of our time there just relaxing.
The room has a large sitting area and nice bar area with mini-fridge large counter, and ample glasses and dishware. Nice small dining table next to it.
Bedroom is huge and attractively appointed, although the area over the dresser was spasrs and in need of a painting or similar.Attractive furnishings and artwork throughout. The wall-to-wall glass sliders open the space up perfectly to the outdoors.
The pool area is nice, as are the surrounding grounds, with adjacent bar. There’s a nearby cabana building where they hold morning yoga classes which were nice too.
We did not try the restaurant—just picked up things at Whole Foods by the airport, and more snacks at the nearby market to enjoy on our deck.
This hotel is just a really special experience not to be missed.

However, the Hyatt rates are far and above “Mom and Pop” budget rates Our experience was that we were paying for the Hyatt name, but Hyatt wasn’t delivering on the Hyatt experience. Hyatt Destination prides itself on delivering an experience e that conveys the natural beauty in harmony with the surroundings. But does that actually mean neglect? The Hana/Maui Resort needs some aloha!
We didn’t experience the typical warm greeting upon arrival with a cool beverage and a lei welcome. The on location restaurant only serves breakfast. (Dinner is offered in the small town center, across the road). The pool area lacks a hot tub, and the pool bar is more like a snack shack with limited, albeit pricey, offerings. We were not expecting amenities such as in room TV, or alarm clock. But we were expecting Hyatt level hospitality.
Would we return? We believe Hyatt needs to invest in this particular destination property to elevate it to the expected experience associated with the high end price tag. The property has potential. Maybe they are banking the money from the high rates to later put back into this beautiful property in an exquisite location. Hope so!

I was at the Hana Maui Resort twice in the 1980's, when it was the Hana Ranch. Going back last month to find it timeless, with very little changed, was a nice surprise. Hana maintains it's old Hawaii roots, with many of the Resort staff are generational Hawaiians born and raised in Hana. There is no comparison between Hana and the more touristy areas on Maui. The only issue we had with the Hana Maui Resort was getting transportation to visit the National and State Parks, a local farm and an amazing pizza place with live music. They provide a shuttle to Hamoa Beach, but otherwise. you have to rent a Resort Jeep and drive yourself.
We drove the Road to Hana to the Resort, then flew a private Cessna (arranged by the Resort) for a 15 minute trip back to Kahului. A great option since you get amazing views of the coast. waterfalls and crater.
Our stay at Hana was peaceful, extraordinary and worth 5 stars. We will definitely be back!
"Parking is located quite a distance from the room. Bellman driven golf carts are available. Walk to restaurant(s) is across many hills."Read full review
