A beautiful place to stay in Hana in lush gardens with spectacular views. Very quiet and relaxing. Wonderful people and a very welcoming environment. There are also horses on the drive up and Hana is a magical place.
This was our second visit here and we had a wonderful time staying in the Jasmine suite for three nights. Nice bouquets of tropical flowers in the living room and bathroom was a nice touch. Screen doors kept the bugs out and a nice breeze flowing through the home. The wraparound deck and views are amazing. Very tropical landscape and private. Only us and the singing birds. We didn't cook much in the home and went into the small town of Hana (10 minutes) away and ate at the Traavasa resort two restaurants. The Hana fruit stand nearby had the best banana bread and fresh fruit (pineapple, Apple bananas, avocado). There wasn't any fruit at the Hasagawa or Parker Ranch store so plan on picking up fruit at the stands, We did make breakfasts here and the kitchen had everything we needed. Washer and dryer was in the unit and they had beach towels, chairs and coolers to take to the beach. This home is in paradise,…
There is no arguing that the views and property itself are stunning. It is just like you see in the pictures. There are also eucalyptus trees on the property (look them up) so you can see the crazy colors of the bark! The highlight of this property is simply the views, views, views. And nature. Unfortunately, the interior needs some serious updating/maintenance. It felt tired, and while there were some nicer aspects of the inside, I don't think I could have stayed in this unit longer than 2-3 days because of that. Nice features of the inside: - the king-sized bed was very comfortable with newer linens and pillows - the layout (except for the weird TV watching area that was separated from the kitchen by a room divider) was great and open-concept. Would have been good for a larger group (4-6 people) and there was a large table to eat dinner at or play games - deck wrapped all around and there were tons of patio-sized glass doors (5 or 6?) with siding screens to help enjoy the view - large island in kitchen so tons of prep space - clean floors Features of the inside that need improvement: - decor all over feels very dated...a few simple modern touches would help a lot - pink bathroom, brass fixtures - again, just needs updating - needs a good "spring cleaning" - dirty walls, some mould on ceilings in bathroom, cobwebs in many places, dead bugs... - screens seemed old and worn, some small holes (lots of bugs got in, especially at night), windows and screens all need cleaning (to help with enjoying the spectacular views!) - very little in the way of extra amenities (wish there were more board games, modern DVDs/CDs, minimal emergency toiletries, no coffee provided - not a big deal if you know to bring your own but we didn't, and it's just a nice courtesy) - nowhere to hang wet clothing or towels other than small rack in bathroom - kitchen dishes/appliances lacking somewhat and not the cleanest, cupboards in disrepair, coffee maker was dirty (I think the cleaner just forgot to clean it honestly so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here) The size of the unit is very large but felt lacking in the little things that make one's stay outstanding as opposed to average. Interestingly, the owner stayed in the unit upstairs while we were there (seemed odd since I had read that they leave the unbooked unit (there are two units you can book and they sit on top of each other) empty to ensure privacy; also, the caretakers/cleaners live in adjacent parts of the same house - no one ever bothered us and the caretaker, who was moving out, was super nice! But just want to be clear that the property isn't entirely "private"). Was it worth it to stay here once to see the amazing views? Sure. Was it great value for the money? Not so much for just two people. Would I come back? Probably not, unless some major updates/cleaning was done to the interior. I don't want to seem nit-picky but I'm just trying to give a fair and honest review that may be helpful to others. We've stayed in many other places on the island (including one other accommodation near Hana), so I'm comparing my experience here with other places I've stayed. If it wasn't for the amazing views, I'd probably only rate it 3/5 stars.…
For us, the most enjoyable time of our stay on Maui were the days spent at Ekena in Hana. And while there isn't much to the town, that's what makes days here so special - five days and four nights were too few! Ekena offers thoughtful property hosts, comfortable accommodations, magnificent views and all the hiking and privacy one could ask for. It is set in quiet contrast to so much else in Maui. Particularly memorable was our invitation to a dinner party and solo violin concert, hosted by the property's owners whose primary residence is in Tokyo. We shall treasure that evening as the best of our many outstanding VRBO experiences. We highly recommend Ekena to you!
This great house, a short 10-15 minute drive to the 'center' of Hana only rents to one party at a time...so you will have no one above you or below you...unless you bring friends and rent it all! (The exception may be during February or March when the owner visits). The warm, kind, talented and interesting caretakers are quiet neighbors on the lower level. Our second time here and it felt like returning to friends! Robin and Gaylord will warmly welcome you, answer your questions, make suggestions if you ask...otherwise, like ships passing in the night, you will feel like you are alone on top of the hill! With the birds. The home was built in 1991, has a great kitchen for cooking that food you picked up in Paia on the way! Or the fresh fish you buy at Koki beach, if you are lucky! Mana is an awesome market in Paia, by the way! A new huge washer and dryer are yours alone to use in the Jasmine suite where we stayed. We have stayed here twice and have recommended it to dear friends who came with their 14 year old daughter and they loved it as well. No ants at all during our week stay, by the way! Super clean house, new beach chairs to use and the boards look new too! The birdsongs, the sunrises and sunsets, the easy drive to Black Sands beach before the crowds, the lovely 20 minute drive to incredible Hamoa Beach and the great views from the decks and great room, do make up for the '60's furniture' that some folks mention. Hey, it's all pretty comfortable...that's my bottom line! If you want ultra modern furniture, perhaps Kapalua is more for you than Heavenly Hana. We all need to know what is important to us and Ekena has a great web site with pictures so you can see for yourself before booking😊. We stayed 4 nights last year and 7 this year...and it shall be hard to drive off in the morning and turning left....leaving this special haven.…
