Buy a bottle of fine cabernet or some high-quality Japanese tea while you're driving through Pai'a because that's what you'll want to drink when you arrive at Ekena! At least that was our immediate response -- but we only had cranberry juice with us (which we nonetheless poured into wine glasses)!

The views are breathtaking and the interior design is elegant. The feel is open, uplifting, and serene.

The website doesn't fully explain this, but the house includes a fully outfitted kitchen with spices and dishwashing detergent supplied, and a washer/dryer unit in the side hall, also with detergent. There are only a couple CDs for music system, so you may want to bring a few of your own to play quietly. Plus be sure to browse the fascinating books on Hawaiiana that Robin and Gaylord have collected.

This place is not for kids. Not until they accomplish something substantial in life.

There is no arguing that the views and property itself are stunning. It is just like you see in the pictures. There are also eucalyptus trees on the property (look them up) so you can see the crazy colors of the bark! The highlight of this property is simply the views, views, views. And nature.

Unfortunately, the interior needs some serious updating/maintenance. It felt tired, and while there were some nicer aspects of the inside, I don't think I could have stayed in this unit longer than 2-3 days because of that.

Nice features of the inside:
- the king-sized bed was very comfortable with newer linens and pillows
- the layout (except for the weird TV watching area that was separated from the kitchen by a room divider) was great and open-concept. Would have been good for a larger group (4-6 people) and there was a large table to eat dinner at or play games
- deck wrapped all around and there were tons of patio-sized glass doors (5 or 6?) with siding screens to help enjoy the view
- large island in kitchen so tons of prep space
- clean floors

Features of the inside that need improvement:
- decor all over feels very dated...a few simple modern touches would help a lot
- pink bathroom, brass fixtures - again, just needs updating
- needs a good "spring cleaning" - dirty walls, some mould on ceilings in bathroom, cobwebs in many places, dead bugs...
- screens seemed old and worn, some small holes (lots of bugs got in, especially at night), windows and screens all need cleaning (to help with enjoying the spectacular views!)
- very little in the way of extra amenities (wish there were more board games, modern DVDs/CDs, minimal emergency toiletries, no coffee provided - not a big deal if you know to bring your own but we didn't, and it's just a nice courtesy)
- nowhere to hang wet clothing or towels other than small rack in bathroom
- kitchen dishes/appliances lacking somewhat and not the cleanest, cupboards in disrepair, coffee maker was dirty (I think the cleaner just forgot to clean it honestly so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here)

The size of the unit is very large but felt lacking in the little things that make one's stay outstanding as opposed to average. Interestingly, the owner stayed in the unit upstairs while we were there (seemed odd since I had read that they leave the unbooked unit (there are two units you can book and they sit on top of each other) empty to ensure privacy; also, the caretakers/cleaners live in adjacent parts of the same house - no one ever bothered us and the caretaker, who was moving out, was super nice! But just want to be clear that the property isn't entirely "private").

Was it worth it to stay here once to see the amazing views? Sure. Was it great value for the money? Not so much for just two people. Would I come back? Probably not, unless some major updates/cleaning was done to the interior.

I don't want to seem nit-picky but I'm just trying to give a fair and honest review that may be helpful to others. We've stayed in many other places on the island (including one other accommodation near Hana), so I'm comparing my experience here with other places I've stayed. If it wasn't for the amazing views, I'd probably only rate it 3/5 stars.

Aloha, My husband Gray and I just became the new property manager/caretakers at Ekena. I am sorry we didn’t get to meet you while you were here. I am also sorry to learn that you were disappointed in your stay, as the goal at Ekena has always been to provide a fantastic experience for guests, as you can see from other reviewers. I want to address your concerns as best I can. While the furniture may be a bit dated, it is still in great condition and quite comfortable. We are giving the place a facelift right now with new paint and new stain for the cupboards. Maintaining a vacation rental is always a work in progress. Regarding the screens, my husband just replaced five sliding door screens this past month before we moved in here. The kitchen has a full set of quality dishes, mixing bowls, new pots and pans, and lots of utensils. The appliances, including the washer and dryer have all been updated in the last couple years, except for the dishwasher, which still works like a charm. Once in awhile we get small beetles at night, especially if lots of lights are left on, that leave a kind of sap on the outside of the windows. Had you brought it to our attention, we would have addressed it immediately. There is a huge deck with lots of railings and multiple chairs for hanging wet bathing suits, towels, etc., in addition to the two full towel racks and several hooks in the bathroom. The TV watching area is a new set-up we just tried out. Since you mentioned it felt awkward for you, perhaps we will go back to the old set-up. As for more board games, I’m not sure if you found the games and jigsaw puzzles in the cabinet under the microwave. We also have lots of wonderful books on Hawaiian culture, birds and flowers. Meanwhile, the views are wonderful entertainment with the ever changing light and cloud patterns, magnificent rainbows, all the different birds, and whales in season. We never rent to more than one party at a time. However, the owner is an exception. He seldom visits, but wanted to be here to oversee our transition as the new caretakers. He is always conscientious and respectful of the guests. Again, I’m sorry to hear you were disappointed in your stay here. One of the benefits of having caretakers onsite is that we are here to handle any issues that may arise. Had you communicated any of your concerns with us, we would have happily addressed them. With aloha, Lily

My husband and I recently stayed here to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary. This place is beautiful, breathtaking. We were in awe when we saw the floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that all opened to the most gorgeous and lush view. We loved having a glass of wine and watching the rain fall from our lanai. A hammock hung there would be wonderful!
Ekena was one of two places we stayed in Hana. We do have a couple of aspects that would make us probably not choose to stay there again. One is privacy. There really isn't any. The caretaker lives next door and is always around; we felt sort of like we were celebrating our anniversary with our mom and dad. Second, there are no blinds to pull at night. While none are needed on most windows, one on the kitchen window that faces the parking lot and where the caretaker is often wandering around would be nice. We didn't feel like the place was really "ours" while we stayed there. We felt like we had to keep our voices low and couldn't really relax and take it all in. We were also given a small pamphlet to read "at our leisure." We excitedly took it out to the lanai to read and found that it was basically a rule book; such as "no visitors allowed." They did also have a piece of paper on the counter listing local sites which was nice. We saw that another reviewer described the caretaker as "brusque." We have to say that we agree. While she is perfectly polite it does seem a bit forced and her parting words to us were a semi-nasty comment regarding tourists; we drove away with a "hmmm" feeling.
It is truly a beautiful place and nice as an option given that there are not a ton of places to stay in Hana, but not entirely for us.

Aloha, and thank you for taking the time to review us. We certainly do appreciate your 4 star rating and are always happy to see guests’ faces when they walk in and see that incredible view open up in front of them. We are sorry that you felt that the house was not as private as you hoped it would be. I could list the many ways that we are one of the most private homes in Hana, but the bottom line is you did not feel that while you were here, and I am sorry that you were disappointed with any aspect of the property. Your stay was very brief so I must have been very busy the one day that you were here. Fortunately, I know that your gorgeous ocean view across the front of the house was not interrupted since no one can walk on that side of the house as the land drops off steeply just below the balcony. I am sorry if you felt I was anything but welcoming. I actually remember that, amongst other things, we briefly talked about the beautiful part of Idaho that you live in. It is always my goal to have happy guests that leave here feeling thrilled with their choice of accommodations and looking forward to coming back. Your last comment about a “semi-nasty comment regarding tourists” left me totally bewildered. We have met and hosted thousands of people over the past 20 years from all over the world and without a doubt, the vast majority of them have enriched our lives and touched us in so many ways. We are very appreciative of the people who choose to stay here and I am sorry if you did not feel our appreciation. Again, thank you for acknowledging the beauty of Ekena. Mahalo, Robin

This place is spectacular the moment you approach it. Ekena sits high on a hill in the clouds with an unbeatable view. If you like 10:30 curfew-definitely the place for you. Tons of rules and post its. Even if you follow all the rules and appreciate the property--the moment you make some noise, expect robin to be checking on you. There are a lot of caveats. Having people over for dinner? No problem until the landlord walks in and tells you to wrap it up immediately. If you like to take yourself very seriously and your vacation consists of post its, rigid plans and silence--in a rustic setting at a resort price -- this is the ultimate place for you. I just wish the website accurately depicted all of this upfront before booking-- instead of a laid back hana home. (Just trying to accurately place the consumer with the seller.)

When feedback from our guests is constructive and honest, we appreciate their opinions and consider what we can do to improve our guests’ experience. We realize that it is an important ingredient to running a successful vacation rental. Sadly, this was not the case with these guests. They did have a bad experience and it was also incredibly stressful and uncomfortable for us. They booked our home and paid for four guests (we have a published 4 person max) and showed up with six. When we addressed the issue with them, they assured us that the extra people were only there for dinner. As the night went on and on, it was clear there was no intention for the 2 extra unpaid guests to leave. This left us in a very awkward and uncomfortable position. We do have set policies that are consistent with the other rentals in the area. These policies are on our website and a reminder goes out in our confirmation emails. Because we always want guests to be happy with their stay, we are very upfront with occupancy details. We trust that informed guests will rent a place appropriate to their needs. If they had only told us what they needed upfront, we would have been more than happy to refer them to other accommodations that would have worked perfectly for them. These guests chose to leave the next day. Though we were under no obligation to do so, we made the decision to refund them for their unused night and they seemed grateful at the time. Given the circumstances, it was incredibly disheartening for us to learn that they posted this misleading and inaccurate review. We work hard to provide our guests with excellent accommodations and despite a bump in the road now and then, we continue to love Hana and our business. Please feel free to call us if you have specific concerns, requests or questions regarding this review or our accommodations. Mahalo, Robin

The website does not do this place justice. The most relaxing and beautiful place ever. Robin and Gaylord were tremendous. And we loved the dog Jaz. Have told so many people about this place that we are afraid it will get overbooked. Sitting for hours on the deck and looking out over the lush landscape and ocean was amazing. Robin has a green thumb and it will take you hours just to see all the foliage and plantlife she has planted. I would highly recommend this property. This is for adults as there are no pools or play ground on property but you are only 5 min away from the most beautiful black sand beach I have ever seen. We are getting a group together to go back next year. Cant wait!!!

We were a group of 2 couples traveling to Maui last week of August, first week of September, 2014. We divided our trip between Hana and Kapalua, in order to best experience the two sides of the island. We rented the Ekena Sea Breeze suite for our stay in Hana. I cannot say enough about how beautiful and comfortable Ekena was. The Sea Breeze suite provided us with enough room that we could all spread out and have plenty of personal space. We have stayed several places in Hana, and cleanliness can tend to be an issue in the rainforest. This was absolutely not an issue at Ekena, everything was spotless. The kitchen is very well equipped, and we cooked meals there every evening. My husband even came home and ordered a set of the "green pans" that the kitchen has, he loved them that much! We spent our days exploring all the sights around Hana, for which Ekena is a perfect base. Very close to Wai’anapanapa park and Hana town, and a short drive to Kipahulu and Hamoa/Koki beaches. We did have dinner one evening right down the street at the Hana Farms Cooperative - highly recommended for a unique dining experience on a Friday or Saturday night - look for the signs.

Robin was an excellent hostess - she was always available if we needed extra towels or to answer a question, but never intrusive. She emptied the trash each day during times that we were out and never disturbed us in any way.

If you have the opportunity to stay in Hana, I recommend this property. Our time here was the most relaxing, serene part of our vacation.

Aloha dear guests, It is always such a treat to start my day reading such a lovely review. I am so happy that all of you enjoyed the Ekena property and Hana so much. The Sea Breeze home does work beautifully for 2 couples sharing the house because there is so much room, but still lots of privacy for both couples. And with 2 master suites, both couples get the "best" bedroom. We enjoyed meeting all of you and hope that you will return when you head for Hawaii again. It was a great pleasure to have you here and thanks for taking the time to share your enthusiasm for Ekena and Hana. We really appreciate it! Mahalo, Robin

We recently spent 3 nights at Ekena, in the Jasmine unit, and it totally surpassed our expectations! Everything just clicked: the incredible setting of the house, the wonderful and harmonious space and aesthetic layout of the unit, and the nice care takers.

When I first saw pictures of Ekena, taken from the driveway, it looked like it could be two houses, and I wondered a bit about that - but it's all one big house, in the middle of a pristine setting.
Though we hardly cooked, it was great to have super kitchen available to us in the Jasmine un it: Some people worry bout the road to Hana or about getting food once there: We had gotten some supplies at Mana food store in Paia (great place!) before coming down to Hana - then fixed our own rather elaborate breakfasts at Ekena, and then got great food for the other meals from Hana Farmers Market, Bruddah's hut, the Thai lady in "downtown" Hana, and yummi banana bread down the road from Ekena.
We were plenty busy with long hikes in Wai'anapanapa State Park, with getting a trike ride and a sail plane ride from Armin and Hans at the Hana airport, and just taking it all in. Ekena was so perfect for all of that, before heading around the island on the "other road", the one people have so much trepidation about : we found it very interesting and fun!
We stayed at two other places in Maui during our 11 day vacation, and Ekena is hands down our favorite. It absolutely baffles me how some reviewers mentioned things being outdated at Ekena or the care takers not being hospitable enough, or issues about privacy: absolutely not true!
With a nice welcome basket of fruits, we enjoyed the luxuriousness of Ekena while finding it also quite cozy. We drove around in Hana quite bit and had a chance to see other accommodations: We totally felt that we lucked out by finding in Ekena THE best place to stay in Hana!
If you love solitude and nature rather than the beach scene, Ekena is definitely your place.
Aloha and mahalo to Robin and Gaylord!

Beautiful house, beautiful view, serene location, immaculate grounds. The WiFi doesn't work well, ants are a minor issue, the BBQ could use replacing with a nice gas grill, and the bedding could be upgraded. The WifFi, grill, and sheets are worth overlooking given the awesome location and it really is a cool house... BUT, the caretaker is HARSH, BLUNT, and needs her edges softened! Vacation for me includes dealing with good natured people who understand how to delivery hospitality. I'd love to go here again but, won't because of the caretaker. I just don't want to encounter her when I'm attempting to relax and enjoy paradise!

As is always the case, there are 2 sides to every story. While 99% of our guests treat this lovely home with appreciation and respect, there is 1% that does not. I will ask that people reading this review scroll down through the other reviews for a very different story. Our 20 years of guest books are filled with positive comments of our hospitality and helpfulness. I take great joy in welcoming people to this delightful property and over 20 years have made lasting friendships with many of our visitors. Our return rate is high and we are very grateful for those guests that appreciate the effort and love we put into preparing a restful, beautiful, and special place for them to spend their vacations. I understand how important vacations are and love to hear from people that Ekena was the very best part of their vacation.

In March I surprised my husband with a trip to Hana for his birthday. We stayed for 3 nights in the Jasmine Suite at Ekena and just loved it. The accommodations were wonderful. The unit was beautifully decorated and had all the amenities we could wish for. While the Jasmine unit does not offer an oven, we had a great time grilling or eating food that we brought that did not require cooking. We had such a good time that we decided to try the Sea Breeze Suite for 4 nights in August for my birthday. Again, it did not disappoint. The Sea Breeze unit offers a fully equipped kitchen, but to be honest, we had more fun grilling and eating food we had prepared ahead of time and brought with us. The views from either unit are spectacular (the lanais have to win an award for the longest ever), Robin and Gaylord are perfect hosts, and even though we have stayed at the Travaasa Resort in the past and it is beautiful, I can not imagine staying anywhere other than Ekena on future trips to Hana.
Thank Goodness For Ekena

If someone asked where they should stay in Hana, we would recommend Ekena in a heartbeat. I think that Hana (and the road to it) was the best part of our amazing trip to Maui, and staying at Ekena played a major role. It has everything and more we would want from a home away from home (in paradise yet). Our only regret is that we did not stay longer. Thank you Robin & Gaylord for sharing.
