The views are breathtaking and the interior design is elegant. The feel is open, uplifting, and serene.
The website doesn't fully explain this, but the house includes a fully outfitted kitchen with spices and dishwashing detergent supplied, and a washer/dryer unit in the side hall, also with detergent. There are only a couple CDs for music system, so you may want to bring a few of your own to play quietly. Plus be sure to browse the fascinating books on Hawaiiana that Robin and Gaylord have collected.
This place is not for kids. Not until they accomplish something substantial in life.
Unfortunately, the interior needs some serious updating/maintenance. It felt tired, and while there were some nicer aspects of the inside, I don't think I could have stayed in this unit longer than 2-3 days because of that.
Nice features of the inside:
- the king-sized bed was very comfortable with newer linens and pillows
- the layout (except for the weird TV watching area that was separated from the kitchen by a room divider) was great and open-concept. Would have been good for a larger group (4-6 people) and there was a large table to eat dinner at or play games
- deck wrapped all around and there were tons of patio-sized glass doors (5 or 6?) with siding screens to help enjoy the view
- large island in kitchen so tons of prep space
- clean floors
Features of the inside that need improvement:
- decor all over feels very dated...a few simple modern touches would help a lot
- pink bathroom, brass fixtures - again, just needs updating
- needs a good "spring cleaning" - dirty walls, some mould on ceilings in bathroom, cobwebs in many places, dead bugs...
- screens seemed old and worn, some small holes (lots of bugs got in, especially at night), windows and screens all need cleaning (to help with enjoying the spectacular views!)
- very little in the way of extra amenities (wish there were more board games, modern DVDs/CDs, minimal emergency toiletries, no coffee provided - not a big deal if you know to bring your own but we didn't, and it's just a nice courtesy)
- nowhere to hang wet clothing or towels other than small rack in bathroom
- kitchen dishes/appliances lacking somewhat and not the cleanest, cupboards in disrepair, coffee maker was dirty (I think the cleaner just forgot to clean it honestly so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here)
The size of the unit is very large but felt lacking in the little things that make one's stay outstanding as opposed to average. Interestingly, the owner stayed in the unit upstairs while we were there (seemed odd since I had read that they leave the unbooked unit (there are two units you can book and they sit on top of each other) empty to ensure privacy; also, the caretakers/cleaners live in adjacent parts of the same house - no one ever bothered us and the caretaker, who was moving out, was super nice! But just want to be clear that the property isn't entirely "private").
Was it worth it to stay here once to see the amazing views? Sure. Was it great value for the money? Not so much for just two people. Would I come back? Probably not, unless some major updates/cleaning was done to the interior.
I don't want to seem nit-picky but I'm just trying to give a fair and honest review that may be helpful to others. We've stayed in many other places on the island (including one other accommodation near Hana), so I'm comparing my experience here with other places I've stayed. If it wasn't for the amazing views, I'd probably only rate it 3/5 stars.
Ekena was one of two places we stayed in Hana. We do have a couple of aspects that would make us probably not choose to stay there again. One is privacy. There really isn't any. The caretaker lives next door and is always around; we felt sort of like we were celebrating our anniversary with our mom and dad. Second, there are no blinds to pull at night. While none are needed on most windows, one on the kitchen window that faces the parking lot and where the caretaker is often wandering around would be nice. We didn't feel like the place was really "ours" while we stayed there. We felt like we had to keep our voices low and couldn't really relax and take it all in. We were also given a small pamphlet to read "at our leisure." We excitedly took it out to the lanai to read and found that it was basically a rule book; such as "no visitors allowed." They did also have a piece of paper on the counter listing local sites which was nice. We saw that another reviewer described the caretaker as "brusque." We have to say that we agree. While she is perfectly polite it does seem a bit forced and her parting words to us were a semi-nasty comment regarding tourists; we drove away with a "hmmm" feeling.
It is truly a beautiful place and nice as an option given that there are not a ton of places to stay in Hana, but not entirely for us.

Robin was an excellent hostess - she was always available if we needed extra towels or to answer a question, but never intrusive. She emptied the trash each day during times that we were out and never disturbed us in any way.
If you have the opportunity to stay in Hana, I recommend this property. Our time here was the most relaxing, serene part of our vacation.
When I first saw pictures of Ekena, taken from the driveway, it looked like it could be two houses, and I wondered a bit about that - but it's all one big house, in the middle of a pristine setting.
Though we hardly cooked, it was great to have super kitchen available to us in the Jasmine un it: Some people worry bout the road to Hana or about getting food once there: We had gotten some supplies at Mana food store in Paia (great place!) before coming down to Hana - then fixed our own rather elaborate breakfasts at Ekena, and then got great food for the other meals from Hana Farmers Market, Bruddah's hut, the Thai lady in "downtown" Hana, and yummi banana bread down the road from Ekena.
We were plenty busy with long hikes in Wai'anapanapa State Park, with getting a trike ride and a sail plane ride from Armin and Hans at the Hana airport, and just taking it all in. Ekena was so perfect for all of that, before heading around the island on the "other road", the one people have so much trepidation about : we found it very interesting and fun!
We stayed at two other places in Maui during our 11 day vacation, and Ekena is hands down our favorite. It absolutely baffles me how some reviewers mentioned things being outdated at Ekena or the care takers not being hospitable enough, or issues about privacy: absolutely not true!
With a nice welcome basket of fruits, we enjoyed the luxuriousness of Ekena while finding it also quite cozy. We drove around in Hana quite bit and had a chance to see other accommodations: We totally felt that we lucked out by finding in Ekena THE best place to stay in Hana!
If you love solitude and nature rather than the beach scene, Ekena is definitely your place.
Aloha and mahalo to Robin and Gaylord!
Thank Goodness For Ekena
"Sea Breeze and Jasmine suite have both amazing views but Sea Breeze is better, it is much larger and in the top floor."Read full review
