watching sunrise from our private deck overlooking the mountain and oceans in Maui was a highlight of our trip. at night the sky was packed with stars. we even had fresh eggs from the farm. we stayed in the Jasmine room which made us feel like VIP's. excellent outdoor shower (indoor one nice too). could not recommend more. that said you are in rural maui. no restaurant or bar, 20-30 minutes away - but if you want a quiet, chill relaxing private time, Hale Akua can't be beat!

I absolutely loved the Hale Akua Garden Farm. The grounds are beautiful with lush foliage and tranquil ponds and pools. There is a deck with an amazing view of the ocean through a valley. The same deck is the location of a large hot tub and an infrared sauna (neither of which I used). There is also a beautiful swimming pool. And all of these amenities are open to guests 24 hours. The place is also a working organic farm!! The staff that we interacted with (Michelle and Sasha) were very friendly and helpful. I stayed in the Plumeria Room which was very large and very comfortable and, based on their website, I think there are many other nicer rooms offered. (Those weren't available when I booked.) In short this is a truly magical place. I would highly recommend it and hope to return.

My wife and I had the most amazing experience at Hale Akua. We had originally booked our honeymoon and our stay here 2 years ago but (obviously) due to COVID we postponed it several times. The day before our trip we got a call from Michelle who had found out our most recent reservation reschedule hadn't made it on the books. At first we were disappointed but wow did Michelle and Hale Akua make up for it. We stayed one night in a private room and then were upgraded at no extra cost to the beyond amazing Waterfall House. Everything about the Waterfall House is exquisite, from the baby grand piano to the spaciousness to the extra soft and squishy carpet to the unbelievable view of the surrounding rainforest and ocean beyond. Just incredible. Mostly I just want to shout out the amazing customer service experience Michelle gave us. It couldn't have worked out better and we wouldn't hesitate to stay at Hale Akua again in the future!

The Cliffhouse is amazing! Complete privacy with private pool, incredible views! We acted like newlyweds and we’ve been married almost 33 years. Michelle and Hannah were great hosts. I wish I could give 6 stars! Highest recommendation!

If you don’t stay here, you absolutely have to do the farm tour here. Joe runs the whole farm and puts his heart and soul into it and it’s so intriguing to hear about the tour from someone so invested in this place. Hale Akua is very very Lucky to have such a kind, skilled, and knowledgeable person running the farm. We got to try some awesome fruits and learn about sustainable farming. Thank you for a one of a kind experience!!

I stayed at Hale Akua in the Cabana House and it was very run down. Sinks & toilets were backed up which stunk the room. The pool was too cold to swim in. The sheets and towels they provided us were old and tattered. Also, the hot tub would have a layer of dirty slime on top. However the food was good and the views were magnificent. It just needed lots of updating in the room and outside, etc. Landscape was beautiful. Oh yeah, I was getting lots of bites and when I flipped my mattress over there were lots of bugs under....yuk! And they did nothing when I complained.

We traveled to Maui for my husband's work event, which was being held at one of the best resorts in Wailea. We were able to come in a few days early..spend a few days on our own to recover from 12 hours of travel and explore the island. We wanted to stay in a place on the flip side of Wailea, and we were also on a budget. Hale Akua fit the bill - it's located on the north side of the island off of the road to Hana, and the price for the "Pond Room" was right.
Judging by descriptions and images, we expected it to be a bit rustic. Shared bath, showers kind of nearby, etc. But as we were checking in at a big resort with all of the modern conveniences a few days later, we decided we could deal with "roughing it" for a bit.

It turned out to be our favorite vacation destination of all time - our favorite place, period. It was also the most romantic three days of our marriage. Absolute perfection - we didn't miss a thing and couldn't have asked for anything more.
It's set well off the main road, though we didn't have any trouble finding it. There were a few other guests, but we had a sense of being alone together - complete solitude. Privacy wasn't an issue. The landscaping is carefully planned so the path to each part of the property curves through trees and brush, crosses streams, passes waterfalls, turns through gates...with sculpture and statues tucked away here and there. AS mentioned elsewhere, there are several hot tubs - all with views of the ocean below. It faces east, and is an amazing place to watch the sunrise each morning.
The Pond Room is located in the Cabana building, so the amazing pool is almost right outside of our door. It was always clean and well maintained. The pool area is beautiful - pictures don't do it justice. The water was just cool enough to be refreshing, but not cold.
We didn't have a private bathroom, but facilities were directly across a small breezeway outside of our room, and were kept very clean. Showers may be 'around the corner', but I would walk that 20' to stand and shower with those trees in view every day if I had the option. The kitchen is large and well equipped. There are additional facilities located in teh main house which we were invited to use, but the Cabana building kitchen was much more convenient for us.
Our bedroom was smallish, but sufficient for the two of us. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bedding was fantastic. This room has two windows that open on to the pond and waterfalls. The sounds coming in were incredibly relaxing. The room is not air conditioned, but an oscillating fan was placed in the room for us and we were perfectly comfortable. In any case, I would have hated to close the windows.
There is a washer and dryer nearby, close to the office and on the way to the main house.
As far as we know, there weren't any events being held on the property while we were there. We didn't have time to participate in the farm tour - I wish we had.

We hope to go back one day soon, and if budget allows we'd love to stay in the house over the ocean. The sunken hot tub (not a bubbler like the other, this was just still and hot) is still on my mind - nothing like sitting in it as the moon comes up, with all of the stars over your head. But I'd stay in the Pond Room again in a heartbeat.

It was just peaceful and relaxing and everything you think of when you think "Hawaii". We'd been to Kauai twice in the past, both times splitting our time between a top-end resort and off the beaten path type places. This was our first trip to Maui, and after leaving Hale Akua we stayed at an amazing resort. We've stayed in the best Disney has to offer on land and at sea, in five star resorts in the Caribbean...and Hale Akua is hands down our #1 favorite of them all. It's been two weeks and we still talk about it with deep sighs. Don't pass it up.

** Before you leave Kahului, be sure to stop at the Whole Foods or Safeway for food items. There's another grocery ten minutes or so up the road in Paia, a natural foods store called Manna Food but they don't have everything and it can be quite pricey. After leaving Paia, it's a 20 minute drive to Hale Akua and you won't have another opportunity to shop. There is nothing down Hana Rd going east.
There are several few decent restaurants in Kahului, several in Paia, but again - none after Huelo. If you're heading out on the road to Hana from Hale Akua, be sure to fill your tank and bring water and snacks.

I recently attended a 3 day workshop at the most magical location I have ever visited in Hawaii. It is a few miles outside of Paia on the Hana Highway. Hale Akua Garden Farm sits on the cliffs overlooking the ocean and has spectacular views with waterfalls cascading down at several of the overlooks. I shared a cottage with a friend that was elegantly appointed and comfortable. Among the other amenities: a hot tub and sauna, a clear water swimming pool and a yoga studio. The grounds are lush yet groomed. The whole property has exquisite pools with thoughtfully placed statuary further augmenting a quiet and reverential ambience. The staff is the aloha spirit in action—honestly, more than responsive and respectful; they are genuinely both intelligent and kind. The workshop had so many speakers, the break-out sessions spilled over into the various houses and rooms available for guests and groups of all sizes scattered over the retreat center property. Each new one I visited I couldn’t help but think---this looks like the perfect location to settle in for a couple of weeks and imbibe the unsullied healing and intoxicating energies of the islands which are alive and well in this out of the way location. They also have a state of the art organic garden that provides fresh vegetables to local restaurants which are available for sale. This place is a hidden treasure.

I find that more visitors generally take advantage of being able to swim naked in the pool or hot tub nude. There is no judgement either way whether one wears a bathing suit or not. I have been around a long time, considering I am the owner of the retreat center.
