Maui Tradewinds is a beautiful home nesteled between Hiku and Makawao. Our hosts Bev & David were wonderful and the house was well appointed with everything you need for a relaxing stay. If visiting Maui again we would definately stay at Maui Tradwinds.
We've stayed at the Maui Tradewinds property 2 times before this, and it continued being our favorite place to stay on the island. It's well located for visits to the smaller communities on the north shore (Paia, Makawao, Hana) as well as some lightly populated beaches. Bev and David provided everything we needed for our stay. Our teens loved the view and just sitting in the sun on the deck. They even had a small tabletop Christmas tree for us in the house. We'll definitely want to come back again.
We loved our stay in beautiful Starwind Cottage at Maui Tradewinds. It was truly our home away from home for six nights — spacious, comfortable, with a view to die for, and stocked with so many supplies and “goodies”! It was fun to explore the Haiku area, including Makawao and upcountry. Thank you Bev and David for everything! We will definitely return the next time we stay on Maui’s north shore!
These comments pertain to the Starwind Cottage, a two-bedroom, 1.5-bath, full kitchen standalone unit. The owners also have available the Tradewinds Suite, located on the ground level of their own house, with limited cooking facilities. The cottage is physically close to the owner's house but the houses are not visible to each other because of the lush greenery between them. We have found it to be a wonderfully romantic and luxurious place in a location one would not expect. A great kitchen, plenty of space, very pleasant and thoughtful owners, fine views, and with a hot tub and outdoor shower, no reason to use the indoor facility! We have now been to this property five times in the last ten years. Each time we noted several improvements were made that indicated the owners’ commitment to a high-quality experience for their guests. It is a fine jumping-off point for touring central and east Maui. Everything you would want to go to is an easy daytrip. The location is perfect for us--but if you are expecting something different, you might be disappointed, so consider the following: *This is a residential, not a tourist area. Everything you do will be by car. *You can see the ocean from the deck, but this is not a beach vacation. There are beach parks within an easy drive, but the surf is rough and can be dangerous. If you're a surfer or a powerful swimmer who won't panic if you find yourself being dragged away from shore, fine, but it's not for children. There are plenty of more family-friendly beaches elsewhere on the island. *You are in the rainy part of the island. Rain is more common at night than during the day. The result is lush, beautiful greenery everywhere--but not as much opportunity for serious sunbathing as at one of the beach resorts. *Going east toward Hana there isn’t much in the way of restaurants or shopping. But in the other direction, there are adequate restaurants in Haiku Town (5 minutes) and Paia (15 minutes) plus the famous Mama’s Fish House 10 minutes away. The nearest thing that mainlanders would accept as a supermarket is 20 minutes away in Pukalani; bigger stores including a Costco are in Kahului (30 minutes). There is a small, heavily organic grocery store in Paia. What they have is high quality, including great local produce. You will certainly find something you like, but if you are after some specific brand, or a particular cut of meat or fish, you could be out of luck. Parking in Paia is also a major problem. On the whole, the house is only somewhat off the beaten track. It's not like staying in Hana, where only the most rudimentary groceries are available and the selection of eateries is dismal. *The Highway to Hana is rightly considered one of the great drives of the world. It is not considered one of the easiest. There are some outstanding sights along that highway that are well worth stopping for. The road does require concentration on the driver's part, however. It's narrow and winding. Not treacherous, but you won't make good speed, and timid drivers will not feel comfortable. …
We loved our wonderful stay with Bev & David at Maui Tradewinds! The home was great with some of the best views on Maui right from the private deck. We explored the entire island and the home included everything you could need for your stay. The hot tub was perfect for relaxing after a long day of hiking. Our hosts were fantastic and we will definitely stay again if we make another trip to Maui.
