Tennis and pickleball lovers have 6 well-maintained courts of each. The tennis instructors, led by Mary are topnotch and have group as well as private lessons.
Dining options on site are Happy Talk, an inside/outside sports bar and an adjacent pizza restaurant. Both are excellent choices with good food at reasonable prices.
All in all, this place is very highly recommended!

We would love to come back to the resort in the future. It is so peaceful and beautiful.
It began with a call prior to arrival to ask a simple question. I was shocked at how nasty the person on the phone was thru the entire call. Then a week or so before we arrived there was an email or two advising us of some ammentites that would not be available during our stay. Regardless of that we decided to continue with the reservation but once there found that they added more reductions of ammentities along with a broken hot tub which we were told daily was going to be looked into and fixed but never was. Apparently this is a long standing problem that they wont / dont address and chronically give excuses for. The resort had to been aware of the loss of these additional ammenities well beforehand because they were due to the annual owners meeting per the email sent. Therefore they should of been included in the initial email stating the first few that were going to be unavailable. Peice mealing things that are being taken away during a stay is not ethical nor professional nor honest. Had we known the gym, hot tub, etc etc etc were not going to be available we would of gone elsewhere.
Also, I have been to ALOT of resorts in Hawaii and have lived here over 24 years and have to say that the staff here was by far the worst. Unless you had a tip in your hand. Quite sad because it doesnt take alot to show even a little Aloha. I dont know if they were exhausted trying to please the owners but they sure didnt act friendly or professional compared to virtually every place that we have stayed at in Hawaii.
When it came time to leave the resort we had Housekeepers sitting in a golf cart that entered our room before 10am and had dumped piles of towels in front of our door well before checkout time that we had to move to get out. Not a word from them just stares.
We were a party of 4 who are all over 60 and had been quiet, kind and had cleaned the room before leaving so not sure why they were breathing down our necks.
In addition, we were told to hang out for 15 mins as the housekeeping manager inspected our rooms. The process took an additional hour.
Clearly the hotel has major organizational, communication and service issues.
We chose to rent our unit through the resort rather than through a service, just because of issues we'd heard from others lately elsewhere on the islands, and the rental service was good. The unit was clean, everything was well explained and we had no problem getting our security deposit back in a timely manner.
The unit itself was on the second floor with the view out over the garden to Hanalei Bay. The view was great when the clouds cleared briefly. We also always found parking close by so didn't have to run through the rain too far.
The unit had a good bed, TV, chest of drawers, cabinets, couch and coffee table and chairs for 4 and a table on the lanai. There was a small kitchen with stove, oven, fridge, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. The cutlery was sufficient, and there was a mix of half a dozen plates, and a variety of bowls etc. There were only 4 wine glasses, mugs and water glasses, which was a bit problematic.
The bathroom was a good size for two people and the shower was also a good size. A private clothes washer and dryer was in a closet in the bathroom, so we did not have to use the common coin laundry. Outside on the lanai were beach matts, boogie boards and other beach paraphernalia.
The one problem was that the air conditioner was not very strong. I do not like leaving an air conditioner on at night, but I do like a cool room to start the night. The only way we could get the room cool was to turn on the struggling conditioner in the afternoon and close up the entire unit until bedtime. And before you comment, I know not to set an air conditioner too low to avoid the unit freezing which will kill its ability to cool a room.
We did use the barbecue one night. It is located on the other side of the pool through the garden to one side of a set of tennis courts. A bit far to walk, especially in the rain, but fine. Unfortunately only one of the two barbecues was working. We did not try the pool; it was not heated and int he rain not much fun.
The gardens are beautiful, the bird life (chickens and nene) interesting and the walk down to the beach while a trek was enjoyable.
All in all, I would recommend the Hanalei Bay Resort, but try and go when its not raining.
Pros: We were delighted to discover that there were two full bathrooms! Helped speed up getting ready in the morning. Air conditioning worked well in both the bedroom and the living room. I was worried after reading reviews but air conditioning was perfect and I loved being able to only turn it on when needed. Nice having a full fridge and kitchen. Beautiful view at sunset near the upper tennis courts. Our unit had an exceptional mountain view. Bar was hopping and bar staff friendly. Got pizza back to the room one night from Wiki Pizza and it was tasty and relatively good value for money. Beach was great. So many turtles popping up and swimming about! It is shared with 1 Hotel and since we were there very early on a quiet rainy morning the staff there let us use their bathroom. Location great for exploring north & northeast parts of Kauai but you do need to drive to get to anything.
Cons: It really is a long steep walk to/from the beach. Couldn’t just “pop down” like we did at other places we stayed on Kauai & Maui. Going to the beach was a commitment! Water pressure in shower is terrible and it didn’t really get hot enough. Coffee in packets left in room was really surprisingly not so tasty. In retrospect we should have just bought filters & coffee. Didn’t love that we had to drive to get just about anywhere but the beach. (Other places we stayed had shops/groceries within a 15-20 minute walk.). Felt like we always got the last parking spot but we did always get a spot. That said, concern about not being able to find a spot when we got back did compel us to stay in 1-2 evenings.
We were glad we stayed here and glad we split up our week with some nights north and some nights south. We would stay again.
The unit:
10/10. Very luxurious and high end interior, every piece of furniture, appliances, dishes etc were upscale. The decor was simple yet very tasteful. I could purchase this property as is tomorrow. The kitchen was full loaded, and the second unit also had a small kitchenette Incase a couple wants to rent. We were 2 adults and 2 teens and the space was perfect. The view was breathtaking, lush green with multiple pieces of patio furniture. All bedrooms overlooked the bay/the mountains and perfectly groomed property. While we couldn't watch sunsets directly from our patio, we could see it walking just few steps up. If you really must see sunsets, then maybe id recommend 2nd floor units in building 9 (9000 series). The owners were also very helpful.
The property:
Excellent property, again 10/10. What's not to like here. The pool is big, resort style, the hot tub is fantastic with sand in the bottom, two very lovely restaurants with good drinks, pizza and food, making it very lively end of the day. Lots of lawn games, pickleball court, tennis courts. It's huge but they have golf carts help you out, we never really had to wait to pick us up, but majority of the times we just loved walking around. The pathway to the beach below is paved and lovely with tropical feel. Sunsets from that beach were phenomenal. One Hanalei hotel is right on that beach if anyone wants to go their pool bar to have drinks. The staff was very friendly. It is just 10-15 min drive to Hanalei town. The area overall is just perfect.
Yes, it is expensive, so it is not something we can splurge on every time, but definitely experience this once. The check in fee of $50 is definitely a negative thing- never seen this before considering they also charge resort fee on top and parking fee.
