Nestled in a tropical paradise, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay has been lauded by many for its pristine location and commitment to cleanliness, including eco-friendly features. The energetic atmosphere, complete with live music and fire dancers, has received mixed responses, with some guests finding it overly vibrant. I was fortunate to be a guest at the 1 Hanalei Bay during its opening week. Impressive is definitely an understatement. The hotel design seamlessly incorporates beautiful textures, colors and eco-friendly materials. The open-air lobby is literally nature, as in a green garden, filled with native plants and trees and has such an inviting and calming effect...a perfect welcome for a trip to paradise.

My room was immaculate, the pool was huge and fun for my 9 year old daughter, the bars all had insane views, we snorkeled at the beach right by the pool and the restaurants were beyond delicious, with diverse options. The 1 Kitchen was consistently amazing for meals at all times of day and Welina Terrace was mind-blowing. The nigiri sushi was transformative and some of the best, if not the best, sushi I've ever tasted.

The staff is where this hotel sets itself apart from others. I've been to a lot of beautiful hotels, but we all know the success of any hotel stay depends on the people that work so hard to make our stay pleasurable. In my 5 day stay I met some of the warmest, most gracious, interesting and just plain cool staff members. What was most evident to me was their passion for the island, for their role at the hotel, for the day ahead. I loved hearing their stories and how they all found their way to this majestic place. I truly didn't encounter one person who wasn't grateful to be there helping me have an excellent vacation. For that reason, I will for sure be back!

A very special shout out to some of the kindest people who worked extremely hard to contribute to my permanent Hanalei smile.

Kauai has always been my favorite Hawaiian island, but now I feel like I have a home there I can visit whenever I want. Mahalo!

I’ve been to many beautiful resorts over the many years that I have been traveling. I must say, the 1 Hotel in Hanalei Bay is one of my top resorts. The grounds are immaculate, the staff wait on you hand and foot - from the moment you arrive until your final departure. They are all incredibly attentive and at times, it felt like I had my very own concierge staff for me and my family. The views are breathtaking with waterfalls and mountains everywhere you turn. The rooms are stunning and if you are lucky enough to acquire a ground floor with a terrace, do it! It’s worth the extra expense as these rooms allow you to walk onto the pool area from the terrace. Speaking of the terrace, the pool area is beautiful and immaculate and the adult pool is simply beautiful. The food is delicious and takes on a health conscious vibe without losing any of the deliciousness of the food itself. Breakfast buffet is bountiful and I simply can’t find enough wonderful things to say about this place. If you are coming to Kauai - and looking for first class all the way, look no further than 1 Hotel in Hanalei Bay.
Now, we did make one crucial error on this trip.
We checked out.
Not knowing what to expect and having stayed at a Grand Hyatt in Maui, we booked several nights at the 1 Hotel and several nights at the Grand Hyatt. Let’s just say, as I am writing this review, I am BACK at the 1 Hotel after 1 1/2 not so wonderful days at the Grand Hyatt. If you would like to know why, feel free to read my review on The Grand Hyatt.

Set on an extremely beautiful island and area of Princeville, we almost got exactly what we paid for. Our welcome was extremely warm both in weather and from the staff. The staff knew our name and made us feel like our entire stay would be catered for any way we needed. We felt like the only guests there despite the hotel being full.

The hotel is stunning. It completely captures the “Garden island” vibe that Kauai is known for. Staff are extremely friendly making you feel welcomed and relaxed.

The resort activities are well worth getting involved in. Many are included. “Sake tasting” and the “Perfect Mai Tai” were a lot of fun and very educational. We also recommend hiring a kayak and paddling up the river. It’s beautiful and a good bit of exercise in the morning before it gets too hot. It is a small fee but definitely worth it. Try the “Myofacial release” session in the morning, it’s worth the pain and you feel incredibly relaxed after. Better than a massage.

There are a few restaurants and cafes in the resort which are excellent.

We had a few communication issues that really brought down our stay considering what we paid and how well they welcomed us. Our room had a foul smell to it which we raised as an issue. We kept getting told they would send an SMS but we never received one. We kept telling them and they said they would sort it but still nothing. We complained again and they said they would email us. They took the email down twice and rechecked and still no email. We couldn’t tolerate the smell any longer and complained direct to the manager who said this was the first they were hearing of it and were extremely apologetic rectifying the issue immediately but moving our room and giving us credit on our tab. We were very appreciative of this but it took 36hours and us contacting the manager for anything to happen. After checking out they still didn’t have the right email and we had to sort that out again to get our receipt. This was likely an isolated issue but it affected our honeymoon significantly and will make us reconsider staying there again. When you pay so much you expect a high level of hospitality which we didn’t receive for 50% of our stay.

One Hotel, the prior St. Regis and Princeville Hotel, is now charging $1,600 PER NIGHT for a hotel room, because they are special. 🙂 Went there for lunch today. This is how special they are:
1. They don't have menus. You have to read off an app in your phone.
2. They have about 6 salads (avg price $24.00, 6 entrees (avg price $23.00). So a couple would be spending roughly $100.00 for a hamburger and a salad.
3. They had a choice of 1 type of red wine, yes 1 selection of wine for 18.00 a glass.
4. We ordered, and after waiting for 25 minutes without any food we left.
5. We then went to get our car, waited for 15 minutes for the valet, and then discovered the person that took my ticket took it and left for lunch. After another 10 minutes we received our car.
So after an hour of wasted time at this #1 HOTEL, we received no food and spent 25 minutes to get our car so we get out of this horrible experience. This organization shouldn't be allowed to operate a Kool-Aid stand let alone a $1,600 per night hotel. What a fradulent joke. Don't ever patronize this place. They will become an embarrassment to Kauai. So I received nothing except an elevated blood pressure level and it cost me $7.00 that I tipped the Valet. What a deal !!!!!!! We stopped at ONO Burger in Anahola and had lunch.

The property formerly known as the Princeville Resort is now a fully renovated 1 Hotel. The transformation was sorely needed and kudos to the design team - it is really lovely. The views from this resort are the reason we came back. Sadly, and we were not told this at the time of booking, the entire resort is not open which means our Ocean View Double Queen was right above the pool - meaning we could not open the windows between 9AM and 10PM unless we wanted to hear kids screaming and the resort music. The room itself is nice however there is not nearly enough storage for a room that is supposed to house 4 people. One whole closet is locked to house local “ventilation”. And more hooks in the bathroom please! There are two main restaurants in the lobby: 1 Kitchen and Welina Terrace. Welina Terrace is really like a bar that serves food and is ridiculously overpriced and noisy. 1 Kitchen redeems the property in both food and service. We had an amazing meal there and wonderful service. However, once this hotel is fully opened I am not sure how they are going to feed everyone. I strongly recommend making your dinner reservations when you reserve your room. The beach amenities were great and I LOVE that you don’t have to reserve or pay for the beach cabanas etc. I am not sure they will keep this but if so, kudos to them.

My family and I had two rooms that looked out across an inviting swimming pool to the lush green volcanic mountains, and across a pristine private beach to the shimmering blue ocean. The view, to say the least, was stunning. The rooms, while not lavish, were comfortable. But that is as far as I can say of this purportedly top resort hotel. Why?

Firstly, on arrival, we were shown to the reception - three identical sets of furniture, each comprising a sofa (on which the receptionist sits), two armchairs (on which we sit) and a long coffee table separating the receptionist and us. The reception was no different from (and can easily be mistaken for) a lounge for guests. If you were to look for it without having first been told where and what it is, you will have a hard time locating it. What happened to the conventional and easily recognizable reception desk and counter? And the concierge - it is confusingly located at the entrance of a restaurant, not next to the reception. It was also often not manned.

Secondly, the hotel is built from the beach upwards and has two separate sets of lifts. It is not easy to find your way from one place (for instance, the reception) to another (for instance, the pools and the beach), especially when you are a new arrival. You have to get off on the fourth floor and walk. It would have helped if the receptionist or another hotel personnel had advised us on how to get around while showing us to our room, a service provided by most top resort hotels everywhere in the world.

Thirdly, when we were settling in our room, we found that there were no bedroom slippers or bar soaps provided. The ironing board was broken and the telephone didn’t work. We had to call the front desk for these to be provided or replaced, issues you would expect only in a motel.

Fourthly, at our first meal in the restaurant, we ordered battered fish as one of several orders. The young waiter who served us dropped a piece of battered fish on the table, then promptly picked it up WITH HIS FINGERS, placed it back on the plate and went off. The next day, at the Japanese themed restaurant, a different young waiter dropped our sushi on the floor while serving. No, he didn’t pick it off the floor with his fingers. In fact he didn’t pick it up at all. He apologized and said he will return with a new sushi, which, to his credit, he did. And he did then pick the fallen one off the floor, but only after I’d asked him to. Be warned. We found most of the dining/waiting staff to be rookies, still undergoing training. This is not something you would expect of a top resort hotel.

Fifthly, while housekeeping did make the beds and change the towels, we doubt they actually clean the rooms. We tested them with a dead fly on the floor. For three days the beds were made and the towels were changed but the fly remained on the floor. Coffee, milk and honey were also not replaced after the room was turned in the evenings. Again, this is not the service you would expect or would have paid for in a top resort hotel.

All said, if you want value for what you’re paying, you’re not going to get it here.

This has been by far one of the best family vacations we have ever been on. The hotel itself is very Zen and clean and has a great aroma in every hallway. Everything and everywhere is clean and organized. The views from almost every location are breathtaking, whether you’re by the beach or the pool or in your room. The pool is great and large and warm and comfortable. The beach is incredible with coral by the shore with lots of fish and very few people. There are minimal waves and very easy to swim, or just lounge on a tube in the ocean!

The service was also amazing. Everyone here is very nice and happy and always smiling and willing to help. The manager at the front desk William was very kind and helpful and always available and even gave me his cell phone number. The pool side manager, Nicole was also very sweet and kind and remembered our names and constantly checked on us to see if we needed anything.

The food is very good; specially, the oven baked pizzas. The bartenders are very nice and the drinks are very good and poured with a heavy hand :-)!

The concierge were also very knowledgeable and helpful and booked most of our trips for us, including boat tours, and helicopter flights.

I would highly recommend this hotel as a family friendly, or an adult friendly (since there’s a separate adult pooland bar), vacation spot to create, everlasting memories!!!

PS, we have already booked our next trip here next July 4th week :-)

My husband and I stayed at the 1 Hotel for 5 nights. This hotel is beautiful and the only luxury property in Hanalei. The service from the valets, to the front desk, to the bartenders and waiters, everyone was so helpful, nice and accommodating. We were in an ocean view king room . It was very comfortable with lots of space . It had a filtered water dispenser which was a great touch. They also had a Nespresso and tea kettle. They did not provide teabags, but I was able to get some at breakfast. The breakfast was great, nice selections on the menu and also a buffet. The breakfast sandwich and pancakes were our favorites. We ate in the Terrace as well. Very small and expensive bites, not sure it was worth the cost . However the live music and sunset moment was great . The spa was really great . I had a scrub and massage with Asher. He was exceptional. He was very skilled and intentional. One of the best massages I’ve had. And not your typical hotel experience. My husband also had a great experience with both a massage and a haircut.
The hotel is also geared to families, so lots of kids and a large pool area for kids and families . We stayed mostly at the adult pool which was small, but great service . Hannah took good care of us .
The hotel is also an easy 10 minute drive into Hanalei so it was easy to go town and enjoy the shops and restaurants there too.

When my parents and I arrived for our dinner reservation on7/12 we were told the only tables available with a view were low tabletops. As my mother has severe back pain and we saw there were other higher tabletops available we inquired for a table change.
1st time we asked the hostess stated the table we wanted to sit at was set up for two people and a chair cannot be added.
2nd time we asked to switch to as we saw that there were outdoor seatings with high tabletops with plates/cups/chopsticks (basically dinner table set up) but the hostess informed us that outdoor seating was “only for cocktails”. Yet we personally saw her seating other dinner diners with dinner menu in hand at the outdoor area. My parents and I thought to ourselves “surely this difference in treatment isn’t because we are Asians, this is a 5 star hotel after all”
3rd time we asked the hostess to switch to the outdoor table again due to my moms back injury was after we saw other customers switch tables 3 times (eventually to the outdoor area) until they finally found the perfect table for them. When we asked, the hostess showed her obvious frustration and told us rudely “this is your spot, we dont have other tables available”.

The manager eventually came to us and asked us if we’d like to change tables and that the hostess “is just a server and is just following instructions”. When we told the manager how we saw that the outdoor table was clearly set up for dinner but was told by the hostess that the tables were only for cocktails, the manager rudely responded “well it’s kind of hard to explain everything we do here at the restaurant”. We finally sat down and there were bugs everywhere, the manager then proceeded to say “you wanted to sit out here, you sure you want to be one with the elements right? You sure right? You sure you want to be out here with the bugs?”

We were embarrassed and felt so ridiculed at Welina Terrace we decided to leave for 1Kitchen downstairs instead.

While we were eating at 1Kitchen (delicious and great service), the activity director of 1 Hotel, Steve, came to our table to apologize for our experience and offered my family a complimentary cabana reservation for the next day and covered our dinner expenses for the night. Steve was polite and apologetic, and we thank him for that.

But the hostess and manger of Welina Terrace on 7/12/2023 could not have been more discriminating and unaccommodating towards my moms back injury. This is a 5star hotel, that kind of service is unacceptable, we felt like we paid to be ridiculed.

We stayed at the hotel in summer 2023 and have already shared our feedback with the hotel directly. It has been 5 months now and no one ever reached out - which is all you need to know about their service.

We were generally disappointed with the service which was incredibly slow pretty much everywhere -- by the main pool, by the adult pool and during breakfast and dinner at 1 Kitchen. While the property is beautiful and offers a variety of experiences, the service issues described below should simply not be happening at a hotel charging $1500+ per night. Instead of getting outstanding service for such a high rate, we were running into issues pretty much everywhere we went and had to chase staff most of the time. We really wanted to love it but the hotel needs to work on their service before they can charge $$$$ rates.

Some specific examples:

1. We got dinner at 1 Kitchen, and just like everywhere else, it seemed painfully understaffed. Our server, Justin, seemed very busy and it was almost impossible to flag him down. The food and drinks were good but the service was very slow and every meal and interaction took forever. Towards the end of the night, our server brought us a check without asking whether we wanted anything else. In fact, we were hoping to order dessert. When we asked for the check, he asked us about the occasion, and we told him that we were celebrating our honeymoon. Justin kindly offered to take off dessert from our check, however, he ended up only taking off a $7 scoop of ice cream while the other dessert item remained on the bill. At that point, we did not want to have an awkward conversation about fixing it and wait another 30 minutes, so we just paid and left.

2. The service at breakfast was equally slow. There was always a wait although there seemed to be plenty of open tables that just needed to be cleaned. Two out of three times we weren't even able to put in drink orders before we had finished eating.

3. We reached out via email several times prior to our arrival but no one got back to us!

4. We spent one full day at the main pool. Throughout that entire day, no one came by to ask if we needed anything and/or take our food/drink order. We ended up having to walk to the Sand Box twice hoping to place our order only to be told that we needed to wait for the server to come to us. It took another 20 minutes for them to come.

5. While a bit better compared to the main pool, the service was generally slow at the adult pool as well. There was barely anyone around to help with the towels and take food/drink orders. In addition, when we asked the server to place a food order at Kai Maikai around 4:40pm, we were told that the kitchen has already closed, although it says everywhere that it closes at 5pm.

What room category do I book if I want a walk out room to the bottom pool?

You must wear rubber sandals or some type of water shoes to avoid injuring yourself. I would recommend kids to stay in the kids pool/area. The water is clear, however its color is determined by the bottom, so set your expectations. You will not be in Grace Bay water (Turks & Caicos), most likely you will b e swimming as it is raining, however water IS water!

July is a very busy season for the island in general as kids are out of school. I would expect the Hotel to be at a high capacity.

Local here who stayed at the resort and brought our 2 year old 45lb pup. There is no dog sitting unfortunately and we were told the dog could not be left alone in the room. That being said, our pup was welcome everywhere in the resort. She stayed with us pool side and laid on the cabana couch while we swam and enjoyed the pool. She was also welcome to the restaurants and sat with us while we enjoyed dinner on Welina Terrace. Overall expect to have your pup with you at all times.
