They provide you with coupons for two complimentary cocktails each night(this includes soft drinks). We stopped at Mamahunes Tiki Bar upon arrival and used our first coupon. The bartender was very unfriendly and ignored us for five full minutes before taking our drink order and giving us our slightly larger than a shot glass(filled with ice) Mai Tai. Suffice it to say, we didn’t hang out at the tiki bar after that.
The front desk staff were all friendly and they checked in with us via text after our first night. This was actually quite helpful because the housekeeping staff did such a horrible job cleaning our room before arrival that we needed their help! My husband was so disgusted that he took pictures of the towel he had placed on the floor during his shower. When he picked it up, it was covered with dirt(this was not from us since we had just arrived!). To their credit, when we told the front desk staff what had happened they made sure the room was cleaned more thoroughly that day.
However, on the following day, we left the hotel at 4.30am for an all day excursion. When we returned at 3pm, our room had not been touched by housekeeping! Once again, we called the front desk and were told that the housekeeper said she had come to clean our room that morning, but couldn’t get in because we were in the room (remember we left for the day at 4:30am). We were so frustrated and exhausted at this point, that we declined having them come in the room to clean and simply asked for more towels to get us through the night.
To the hotel’s credit, when we checked out they credited us the daily resort fees for the three days we were there(that is the only reason they are getting three stars rather than two).
IMPORTANT TIP:
You may not want to bother paying extra for an ocean view room at this hotel! There are only balconies in the suites. The regular rooms have large windows. Additionally, when you open your window hoping to enjoy seeing and hearing the ocean, instead, you are greeted with a cacophony of crowing roosters rather than the soothing sound of waves.
To emphasize this point, every room includes a complimentary pair of ear plugs!
Ear plugs for an ocean front room!? Trust me, there is a good reason for this, we all know what roosters do at dawn! Just know, that these birds are everywhere on Kauai! I read about this before we went, but what I did not know was that our hotel’s ocean view rooms would end up being a complete waste of money because of them! So disappointing! Having a balcony would have been completely worthless because it is not at all relaxing to sit outside at this hotel!
All of this said, if you travel to Kauai and plan to be out all day on hikes or excursions and the hotel is just a place for you to sleep at night, the Hilton Garden Inn might work just fine for you. However, don’t bother with an ocean view room and keep your windows closed if you want to sleep!
The location itself was only a few minutes drive from the airport and very easy to find. Once there, it was only another few minutes to get to a variety of nearby destinations. It's walking distance from the beach and a 2 to 3 mile walking loop along the coast.
The amenities were all fantastic for the most part. The room was clean, spacious enough with plenty of room for our luggage, the WiFi was complimentary, there was a small fridge, and there were plenty of easily accessible outlets for charging devices.
Mamahune's tiki bar located behind the hotel was always great for quick bites or just for relaxing while sipping Mai Tais. The restaurant in the lobby was also convenient with a decent variety of food on the menu. The gym was small but serviceable and clean.
The only issue we had during our stay was with the on-site public laundry room. We were glad to see they had one so we didn't have to worry about running out of clothes during our vacation but upon closer inspection, the washers themselves were filthy. The rubber gaskets around the doors were covered with a disgusting slimy substance that seemed to hold onto whatever dirt came off of previous loads of laundry. Luckily, there was a much cleaner public laundromat just a mile away from the hotel that I was able to use. Hopefully the washing machines they use for the guest bed sheets and towels were cleaner than the public use ones.
We booked with points as gold members, which waives resort fees and made this an excellent value. The daily FB credit ($20 total for two adults) does absolutely not cover breakfast (~$17 per plate without beverages), but I just stocked up on Hawaiian Host to take home at the front desk store. So the devaluation there still bothers me, but at the same time it’s nice not to be tied to hotel breakfast and be able to try local options (favorite was Java Kai just down the road).
We were sad to find out how outdated our place was. My husband had to fix two out of the 3 blinds and one ended up just staying broken even after we requested maintenance to fix it. The windows were quite dirty, and so was the A/C unit. We had to have our bathtub unclogged (at least this was done!) I purchased Lysol to clean it better.
The furniture isn’t the most comfortable and there was nothing in the kitchen as far as paper towel, utensils or plates go, so we bought everything we needed. Being mandatory quarantined for a couple of days, it was a bit of inconvenience having nothing to put food in or eat with (we brought some oatmeal from home to “survive” on, just in case, knowing there was a coffee maker to heat water with.) We couldn’t leave the room and go up to the restaurant for breakfast for the first two days (understandable due to the pandemic) however, the hotel wouldn’t bring food to the room until 9:30 am. So, no food delivered, no dinnerware to make our own. We were famished.
The front desk people are super nice, the lobby is great, the pools are cute.
I called for housekeeping every 3 days, as the one towel we got per person got pretty used up after muddy hikes and salty/sandy beach trips. One of the days we got a clear plastic bag of towels dropped of in the hallway of our cottage. Something I’d expect from a Motel 6, maybe, not from a Hilton and not for the price of the cottage.
Having a way to rinse off shoes/feet by the cottage would have been fantastic and very helpful to keep everything a bit cleaner. Maybe a faucet outside?
We loved that it was quiet and peaceful here. Conveniently located to road trips, shopping and eating out. I hope the hotel will buy new furniture and blinds, and some very basic kitchenware, even if it’s disposable. We would love to come back to those upgrades.
Tiffany at the front desk was wonderful and made us feel very welcome . She made sure that we enjoyed our stay and we did . Thank you Tiffany.
Tiffany should be nominated for employee of the month. She always had a smile on her face and was very helpful.
The housekeeping department is doing a phenomenal job cleaning the rooms in a timely manner . The rooms are very cleaned.
We had dinner in the restaurant and the waitress was also very good. We had the catch of the day that was Ono and it was excellent. Tasted wonderful and beautiful presentation.
Will definitely going back to your hotel and recommend it.
My only suggestion is that you have a talk with the concierge lady about her attitude. It seems that we were an inconvenience to her as guests when we asked her about booking some trips . She was very short and not welcoming. We ended up not booking a trip because of her attitude . Unacceptable !
She left a bad taste in our mouth and it is a shame because every employees we met during the entire week were all wonderful and customers oriented.
If the concierge lady doesn’t like to be in the hospitality industry she should look for another job.
The concierge lady needs some training about customers service.
We ended up booking the snorkeling trip with Costco and saved some money .
Too bad for the concierge lay. If she had been nice with us she could have made some money and also some money for the company she works for .
In concluding the concierge lady needs to learn to be nice to her customers. Even the on3 coming from Europe . She needs to keep her bad attitude at her house or change job.
It is very sad and unfortunate because every Hilton garden Inn employees who met were outstanding.
"To get to our room we had to go down two short sets of stairs. There was no elevator, but it wouldn't be too bad unless you had lots of luggage. "Read full review
