The idea of a private cottage with river access, kayaks, a stand up paddleboard, snorkel gear, and bicycles is what sold us on the Fern Grotto Inn. We were not able to book a cottage for our entire 13-day stay on Kauai however, so we sacrificed day 9 as “moving day”, and spent our last 4 days on the island in the Coco C cottage. The cottage was amazing. It was well-stocked, well-furnished, and exquisitely decorated! The king bed had a high quality mattress that allowed us to sleep comfortably and soundly. At night, we closed the windows to block the sound of traffic and birds (roosters and zebra doves). The mini-split unit and ceiling fan kept us comfortable. The kitchen had a hot plate and rice cooker, which we used for meals. There were place settings for four, so the two of us didn’t need to do dishes after every meal. Even though the room was too small to leave our suitcases open and accessible, we knew that before we rented. It was fine. There is only one minor criticism of the cottage; our bathroom door would not latch. In fact, when we arrived, the windows were open and the bathroom door was banging closed, blowing open, banging closed, etc. We moved the bathroom floor rug in the way, and it was no longer a problem. But it was baffling that this (obviously not a recent problem) had never been reported (or at least not fixed). Despite that, the Coco C cottage (the room itself) was FIVE STARS all the way. But… the whole package was not. We had read the FAQs, and knew what gear was available for borrowing. In fact, this was a big reason why we wanted to stay at Fern Grotto. We planned on using a kayak, stand up paddleboard, snorkel and beach gear, and maybe even the bicycles, whatever we could squeeze into our final days. Kayaks, SUPs, and oars were all available behind the Canal cottage, as expected. But the launch area is just a narrow set of steps into the canal, making it difficult to launch the craft into water, and without an obvious place to mount and dismount. See their webcam for “behind Canal Cottage”. So my wife, who was eagerly looking forward to using the water craft, said no. Another day, we went to borrow snorkel gear. Despite signs to rinse off the gear when you return it, the gear was covered in sand. The snorkel masks were filthy. And even worse, even though there were a lot of snorkel tubes, almost all of them were missing the clip to attach them to the mask! We decided to just rent from a local shop. There were coolers and boogies boards, but they too weren’t in the best condition. We borrowed a boogie board but later discovered that it was broken. On our final full day, we went for a bike ride. There were four bicycles. My wife took the new-looking 7-speed bike. I inspected the other three, which were all antique one-speed bikes with coaster brakes. The seats were low enough for kids to ride. I was unable to adjust any of the seats; they were rusted in place. We rode anyway, which was very difficult to do with my knees in my face, but I have strong legs. I learned a bit too late that the coaster brake on my chosen bike didn’t work very well. Fern Grotto Inn had a LOT of gear available to borrow. The Laundry room had towels, life vests, and helmets. The outdoor rack had snorkel gear, boogie boards, chairs, mats, umbrellas and coolers. The Canal cottage had watercraft. And out front were the bicycles, with locks, in a covered area. I’m sure I am forgetting some other things. So the adventuring gear of the Inn is well thought out and was a big draw for us staying there. The sad fact is though, that most of that gear needs to be replaced. Maybe theft is an issue; I don’t know. But the poor condition of the equipment forces me to deduct from my rating. I will still grant four stars, because if you don’t care about the gear, everything else was simply outstanding.

We enjoyed 7 phenomenal nights in Ohana House. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen and bathrooms were abundantly stocked with amenities. We utilized the kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, and beach equipment. The grounds are gorgeous and the location is perfectly central to both the north and south shores with plenty to eat in nearby Kapaa. We look forward to returning soon!

Our experience for 10 days at the River Cottage at Fern Grotto Inn (FGI) was exceptional. It is one room with a highly functional kitchen area, nice utensils and glass ware, double bed, beautiful dining table for two people, nicely decorated with an Island motif, and a delightful bathroom with a wonderful shower and abundant storage. FGI also provides an abundance of bath and beach towels. FGI uses a nice partition to make the room seem more than it is. What we appreciated most, however, is the presence of a smart speaker, Alexa, that we daily requested it to play Hawaiian Music. The communal washer and drier worked well, although it is shared with staff. The location is great - on the river and close to the beach. FGI also offers bikes and kayaks. We did not avail ourselves of due to inclement weather. They also appeared to be rather long in the tooth. Additionally, we could not find directions on how to use the TV. We're not big TV watchers and this was not an issue. The absence of an on-site manager was a little disconcerting, but was not a big problem. In conclusion, we enjoyed our stay at FGI and would stay there again. The River cottage is well appointed, decorated, and convenient.

We stayed at Fern Grotto Inn for 6 nights and had wonderful experience. It's a stand alone cottage which is quiet and cozy. You could find everything you need for your dream vacation. Lots of large windows letting in natural light making the cottage nice and bright. Also you could see the beautiful garden and river view through those windows. The small kitchen has all the cooking utensils you need to prepare your meal. You can also find bicycles, kayaks, floaters, snorkeling gears to make your trip on Kauai even more fun. Loved our stay there and would definitely stay again.

The inn is located at Kapaa in eastern Kauai an ideal location for most activities and sight seeing throughout Kauai. It is close to the waters for people who want to do water-related activities: Lydgate beach and Wailua beach are a block away and Wailua river is adjacent. And plenty of shops and restaurants are nearby. We lived in CoCo D. This second floor house is relatively newly built. The house was clean, comfortable, beautiful, well-maintained, brightly lit with lot of windows, overlooking the river and with a fully-equipped kitchen. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was clean and well-equipped with a bidet. Laundry is available in the facility. We have lived in different resorts before. But this is definitely a step-up. If you need a pleasant and memorable stay, I highly recommend this inn.
