Kamaaina rate allowed us to enjoy this experience! LOVED staying here. The room was like a small apartment! 8 minutes from Limahuli Gardens and Haena State Park (Kalalau Trail), and 16 minutes to Hanalei. THE place to be on North Shore Kauai. Took the resort shuttle to Tunnels beach last minute--BEST beach we have ever been to. Almost no parking at Tunnels, so the resort shuttle was the way to go!!! So easy and fast, AND the room provided beach chairs and an umbrella for us to take! Pool and jacuzzi were great, and Opakapaka Grill had amazing opakapaka (hence the name). Local staff was so friendly. I can't say enough good things for this rustic resort. Only potential downside, if you absolutely need A/C don't stay here--there is none. Being local we are used to trade wind breezes and it was perfect for us in March, no need A/C!!

Room – The pictures were as advertised. If you get the “premium ocean view” (for $900 per night all taxes included), you are right on the ocean. You literally have about 20 steps from your door to the beach. In this respect, the room has a beautiful view of the ocean and Kauai coast. It is away from most tourists and very few people on the beach. Getting into the ocean is very limited due to hard volcanic rock beyond the visible sand. We loved the idea of this place being very isolated on the island. However, most activities are in the south part of Kauai and take 1-2 hours to reach due to heavy traffic (also speed limit on the island is mostly 35 mph). Our room looked new and very well kept. The mahogany colored trim throughout the room is beautiful. Our mattress was not comfortable: sheets kept coming off (exchanged twice), and the pillows are awful (I used 5 every night to get a decent sleep, and my partner folded his two pillows in half to get enough cushioning, i.e. think pancake flat). The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, plates, glasses, etc. We cooked many nights in the room. Bathrooms are nice and clean. Resor: this is not a traditional resort, even though they charge a $30 per day resort fee. If you stay beyond 5 days they will give housekeeping for one day. Less than that, and you have to go get your own towels and sheets from the check-in area and exchange the old ones. All condos either have people living in them, or they are time-shares that the property is managing. The pool/hot tub/ BBQ/laundry facility was only 2 years old and well used. We used the Day Spa on site, which was nice, but pricey ($385 for 2 including tip). We used the separate restaurant on site, which was mediocre and pricey. Air conditioning: there is none. They told us this when we made the reservation, so we were aware. We read online that this was not a big deal. Others online said you can leave your windows/door open at night for a nice breeze. However, when you leave the windows/door open at night you let in the gnats/mosquitoes and wake up with bites all over. We got bit up for a few days before we stopped doing this, closed the door and bought bug spray to douse ourselves with before bedtime. In the north of Kauai the wind and rain can come on at any moment and, in our case, lasted 3-4 days straight for the first part of our week there. We had winds of 25 mph for 3 days without letting up. So when we opened the windows and patio door it created a very large, loud wind tunnel making it difficult to sleep. The ocean sound is also quite loud. We tried closing the patio door for some quiet, but that heated up the room and made it very stuffy. You seriously need to consider this before renting a room at this place. You might curse yourself after a few days like we did. The wind gusts during windstorms make the patio unusable for long stretches. A sandwich was literally blown off the plate on the patio table. During the last 3 days of our vacation, the wind did quiet down enough to sit on the patio and it was then beautiful. Overall, we know that everyone will have their own opinions, and certain issues that bother one person may not bother another. We can only say that in our very specific case the $900/night cost did not justify our time here at all. We would not book this experience again.

We chose the Hanalei Colony Resort because they say it's quiet...no televisions, no radio or music. Essentially just the sound of the north shore, that ocean! (those storms). It's exactly what we needed, and our room had a terrific view, right on the water. You'll want to bring your own food, there is a fully equipped kitchen. There is a restaurant on site, as well as lovely coffee shop/art gallery. Pool and laundry area is brand new. Imagine our surprise when, upon checking in. we spied a construction crew right next door. They seemed to be finishing so we (foolishly) hoped they were done done done. Which they were not. Hammering and circular saws and more hammering and yammering and...come on! For a place that charges a premium for quiet it was very disappointing. Of course, when we went to the front desk to inquire they did say "the crew doesn't work on weekends." They DID work every day of the week. It would have made a big difference if we had been advised of the construction upon booking, or even upon checking in. Then we could have decided whether or not to stay. And we might have felt like our concerns were heard. As it was, we were not offered a reduction in price or even a complimentary coffee. Our complaints fell on deaf ears. That was the downside. Upside? The waves, the view, the beach and the excellent complimentary shuttle that will take you to nearby Hanalei. We used this often. Most times the shuttle was driven by Lars, who gets five stars for his great driving, knowledge of the area and overall excellent human-being-ness. Five Star Lars, the view and the long beach walks were the highlights for us. North Shore Kauai is magical, but next time please please advise guests if there will construction!

Just for reference- we stayed 6 nights in an ocean view (not front) unit (unfortunately, we could see the ocean and all of our neighbors.) We paid just over $4,000, with a $300 maid service fee. There is no maid service- you are responsible for changing sheets/towels and tidying up while staying. When asked for a late checkout, after paying over $4,000 for 6 nights - we were told we would be charged a fee. Do your homework- rent an Airbnb instead. This place is out to take your money.

We spent a week at Hanalei Colony Resort in January 2022 and had such a wonderful stay that we came back this past week. The place has the most amazing location and views, especially the premium oceanfront category. The views from these units are absolutely incredible. Sunrises are off the charts. The constant sound of the ocean waves (in January) coming through the windows and sliding doors of the deck/patio is mesmerizing and puts you in a place that feels totally remote and wild. The units are really well laid out with a bedroom space, nice working kitchen, living/dining room, several bathrooms and patio/deck which gets you closer to the ocean. HCR is literally the last place you can stay, other than a VRBO home rental, before you get to the rugged and dramatic Napali coastline. It holds a special spot in a peaceful paradise. It is just a few miles from Princeville, but in spirit and attitude it is really a world away. No golf courses, retail complexes, over-priced shops, etc. A location like this would sometimes be occupied by a large, impersonal, over-crowded hotel that is anything but peaceful and relaxing, however, HCR is small, personal, and very quiet. The staff, in particular Lei and Chawake, is amazing. They bring an authenticity to the experience that is memorable and adds to its overall charm. Housekeeping and other staff are very friendly and helpful...they want you to enjoy your stay. The newly renovated pool and hot tub set in a beautiful garden-like setting, along with a cookout/grilling area, laundry facilities, hospitality rooms, etc are a really nice addition. The shuttle for the Napali coastal hike picks up and drops off at HCR when requested. The on-site spa, coffee shop and restaurant/bar with a great view (all independently run) are nice conveniences. The very chill and peaceful Hanalei with several very good restaurants is just a 10 minute drive. If you are looking for a truly unique spot that is off the overly beaten path and puts your mind and body at rest (no TV!! Love it) then HCR is for you.

Quiet serene area with awesome views. Make sure you get an ocean view room, most of the rooms do have one. No air conditioning, no TV, at least the two I’ve stayed in. The beach can be a little rough at times when waves are coming in and not always conducive to swimming or snorkeling. It’s fairly remote, they do have a small gift / coffee shop and a restaurant (pricey but a great view) adjacent to the property. Stores are not close so you want to bring food in with you. Kitchen had basic essentials. That being said, I come here for the solitude and hiking is abundant. Not many things for young kids to do, hence we didn’t see any in either trip. Pool looks like it was recently redone and was a nice quiet area as well. Some units are privately owned and operated and the last one I was in was very outdated. The ones rented by the resort look a little more updated on the inside, so I’m going to go through them next time; renting from resort also has perks like shuttle that goes to town that you don’t get when going through a private owner.

The Hanalei Colony Resort was absolutely beautiful. I loved the remote and tranquil environment; it was quiet and just all around peaceful. The Restaurant and coffee house in the resort were awesome and convenient. The grounds were lovely and well maintained, the pool and spa spectacular. Also loved our little condo with beach views and tropical Hawaiian vibe. We will definitely book again in the near future!

The HCR is such a GEM. If you’re looking for a hotel that completely immerses you in the magic and beauty of Kauai, this is the place! We were very happy with our upgraded oceanfront condo. It was clean and had everything we needed to cook our meals. The property is beautiful and very well maintained. Chawake was so kind and helpful, along with all the staff we had the pleasure of interacting with. You can not beat the views and location… I could have been content just sitting on the lanai enjoying the ocean views and sounds! My husband and I were traveling with our toddler, and we found a perfect area of the beach for him to play in the shore and us to swim just a short walk away. I truly believe our stay here was the best decision of the trip, and we can’t wait to return! Mahalo!

We had no booking and Kauai was quiet busy when we were there. so we went to the office of the colony resort to ask if by any chance they would have a room for us. Despite the fact that there was almost no vacancy and that we were out of the office hours, the lady did everything she could to find a solution for us. The place is amazing, the staff was really nice. The flat is really nice well furnished. You can cook. Perfect stay
