Stayed here a few years ago and again in 2022 because it's so great! The units are condos, which is great for families or people who want to save money by not eating out every meal, and they are clean and have plenty of space. The location is great, you can walk to the Hilton resort and short drive to the Kings & Queens Shops. The grounds are well-kept and the whole complex is quiet. We even saw a group of nene geese outside our patio one morning! But the best feature is the pool area. There's no beach but the pool right on the ocean is amazing and has great sunset views. We will probably stay here every time we're on the Big Island!

The Waikoloa resort property had everything! Beautiful resort hotels, fabulous luaus, great restaurants, upscale golf courses, two really nice shopping areas! We stayed in a condo in Halii Kai and loved it, very clean and comfortable, just like home! Lots to see on the Big Island, Kilauea volcano, coffee plantations in Kona, black sand beach, the petroglyphs, all within driving distance. My fav? ... the Octopus Research Facility near the Kona airport... got to play with Ocho... and if you've seen the octopus movie, you will love this experience!

After reading the recent reviews I thought I’d share my thoughts. My husband and I stayed at Halii Kai a few years ago. We come to the big island every year and since we retired, we spend a month here each spring. This complex is stunning and the unit we rented was ocean front. The only reason we will never return is because if the pool staff. The first day we entered the pool area with our towels, sunscreen, books and water bottles, we were accosted at the gate by a woman telling us we could not bring in our own beverages or even a bag of chips! She made us dump out the water before we could proceed to find a lounge chair. We honestly enjoyed the option of using the bar and grill when we chose to, but nobody should be told they cannot consume their own water. We will not return to this resort, unfortunately.

We’ve stayed at Hali’s Kai 5 times previously and have always loved it. It’s a great location; the pool is very nice and we enjoy the bar and restaurant. We checked in around 3:15. When we arrived at the unit, it was being cleaned and we were told that she would need 45 minutes to finish. Not a great start to our vacation. We stayed in unit #20A. This was our first time renting this unit, and it was not on par with other units that we have rented. There were several maintenance issues. Upon arrival, we noticed that a couple of light bulbs were burnt out. We looked around and did find spare bulbs to replace 1 of the 4 that weren’t working. There were two more serious issues with the bathroom: one of the sinks has a constant drip and there was no stopper in the bathtub rendering it unusable. We called the office and a maintenance man came out, looked and said that he would need to order parts. Neither issue was fixed during our stay. We would probably stay at Hali’i Kai again, but would not book this unit.

Having seen a negative writeup on Halii Kai 16A from Jan 2016, we were concerned about what we might experience in our unit 16-A (16A). We had no problems! The unit was clean, up-to-date, and offered nice views of the golf course, mountains, and ocean. We spent many hours in the morning and evening enjoying the second floor view and sea breezes. The unit had 2 bedrooms (1 double and 1 King) and had 2 full bathrooms. We used the large sofa bed as well for our family of five. Our 3 older children loved the swimming pool (5 minute walk) and easy access to the ocean front hiking path. The 49 black sand beach was about 12 minutes hike along the oceanfront path. We ate at the Ocean Club restaurant one lunch and one dinner. It is next to the pool, covered by a roof, but totally open to the weather. The prices were reasonable. The office loans out basketball and pickleball on a first-come basis. Each unit is privately-owned and then rented out through agencies. We booked our unit through Delta Vacations. We would happily stay here again.

We've stayed at this resort at least 5-6 times in the last decade. It's excellent in many ways and the views from the pool/gym area are absolutely amazing. The facilities are wonderful and so are most thing about this place. Except... *Some* staff. Many are okay, such as the people at the front desk by the gates. However, as also pointed out in a very recent review, pool staff aren't great. Forget the overpriced drinks and food! The pool staff are decidedly unfriendly and grumpy. The most annoying person there is a particular middle-aged lady (who's been there for years, every time we stayed at Hali Kai). She has a distinctively high-pitched cartoonish baby/child voice. But, don't let the voice fool you: she's extremely unpleasant. One example: last time we stayed there, during the height of COVID, she noticed me entering the pool area without a mask. Even though it was literally 10 steps to the chase lounges (where masks weren't worn), she insisted that I must EXIT the pool area and come back with a mask. That's not so terrible or unreasonable. However, when I politely asked her if I could get a mask from the staff, she cheerfully told me: of course I could, if I paid $10 for ONE MASK. I thought she was kidding, but she wasn't... I exited the pool area, went around it and saw a friendly groundskeeper/custodian. When I asked him if he had a spare mask, he happily handed me several and didn't want anything in return. What a giant rift between a really nice guy and and a mean horrible creature with a squeaky voice. Really left a bad aftertaste.

The location is beautiful and the condo is lovely. But I am paying to be in Hawaii in a condo so I can make my own meals and drinks. The pool does not allow any drinks even water bottles or snacks. You must buy their extremely expensive subpar drinks. The staff is rude, aggressive, unfriendly and unprofessional. I spent over $100 on drinks at the pool and was treated like garbage. When did treating customers like they owe you something become the way to succeed? If this poolside bar wants to have people come back they would consider a significant change in the treatment of their patrons and policies. I will not return to a place where I have been ignored, talked down to and witnessed other people being disrespected. The staff at the pool ruined our afternoon. We will never come back to Halii Kai. I hope the property owners think through the way these disrespectful staff at the pool in the resort complex they own homes in, are impacting their real estate investment. I will never return.

I am giving this an average review because there were both good and bad aspects. The main issue with this resort is that it needs to decide if it is a 55+ resort or a family friendly resort. I think they want to attract families to fill their 3 bedroom condos but the atmosphere is not family friendly at all. Kids were not allowed to bring any toys in the pool; but older adults were allowed to use pool noodles. No outside drinks or food permitted at the pool including coffee cups. The pool could be described as a "No Fun Zone." Our kids got yelled at several times by older adults (60+) staying at the resort. One morning my sister had her one year old outside on the grass at 7:40 (20 mins before quiet time officially ended) and her and her husband got yelled at the lady upstairs, in fact she told my brother-in-law to go back to his country because he had a European accent. My mom spent a ton of money renting three of their condos for our family to be there for two weeks and we enjoyed the location and the restaurant and the amenities but not the atmosphere. To be clear we were not a party group and were regularly in bed before 9 PM. On a side note my husband did get bitten by a centipede in our bed. If you are in a ground floor unit I would suggest not relying on screens to keep bugs out. This is especially an issue right after they do heavy watering as we all found centipedes the next day.

We recently stayed at Hali’i Kai for 2 weeks and it was wonderful as usual. All of the units in which we’ve stayed have been excellent. The grounds are immaculately maintained, and the views are outstanding. We’ve stayed in other complexes within WBR, but Hali’i Kai is head and shoulders above the rest. It is gated and is always quiet, making it a nice escape. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to couples, adult singles or groups of adults who aren’t there to party. When reading previous reviews, a pattern emerges of parents resentful of staff asking their children to behave at the pool. In the many weeks of stays at Hali’i Kai over the past several years, I have not once witnessed children being unfairly treated or harassed by staff. On a couple of occasions, I saw children that were asked politely not to jump into the pool and splash other guests, and not to chase each other around the pool. One look at the Ocean Club will tell you it isn’t ideal for children that want to play. In particular, it is not well-suited to families where parents want to drink and socialize and use the pool as a babysitter. I suspect it is those people that complain about being harassed, but they need to understand others don’t appreciate their children being left to entertain themselves The pool staff are likely taking action because of complaints made by other guests using the pool area, not because they love to harass kids.
