Booked online and our host, Gayle, was one of the best we have had. Kind, prompt replies to our many questions about the condo and the beach club. We have stayed at just about every condo/villa complex in Kohala and Kolea is the only one we have found with direct access to the beach. 5D is only minutes from the beach club and large white sand beach. Pool area is clean and very well laid out, the keiki sand bottom pool was a hit with our son! Great sunset views from 5D which had a very cool outdoor seating and eating area. Nice grill and small refrigerator outside. Kitchen indoor well equipped with everything you need and high end appliances. Condo is well spaced out with 3 bedrooms, one bedroom set up for all the kids including 2 sets of bunkbeds and 2 pack and plays. Lots of toys, floaties and body boards for the kids. Plenty of towels and fresh linens for the beds. Kingsize in the master, queen in the second bedroom. All bedrooms have private baths which was nice, the master bath has a big soaking tub. Our experience with Gayle and 5D was beyond our expectations, and Kolea is one of the nicest, cleanest family friendly locations we have stayed at in all of Hawaii. Highly recommended!!

This is our second visit to this resort. The first time was with adult friends Jan 2919 and the second time with our eldest son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren aged 3yrs & 16 months Fen 2020 Both trips were excellent. The accommodation here is beyond expectations. The buildings are built well The gardens are beautiful. It’s a quiet resort. The first time we had a top floor (3rd) 3 bed apartment 13F and this time we had a ground floor 3 bedroom apartment 11A. Both the apartments were fully equipped. The resort is child friendly without being child orientated. The beach club (free) is good for everyone with a main pool and hot tub with free towels provided. It also has a separate beach pool for the little ones. The beach is easily accessible and safe, not that great for snorkeling. The airport is around 40 mins easy drive on the freeway. There is a good ABC store a short walk away from the resort along with restaurants and shops. There is also a Costco just past the airport towards Kona. We will be going back and would recommend this resort to anyone.

We've stayed here many times now - the best spot on the Big Island! Our favorite unit is Kolea 11G (available here: bigislandbeachcondo.com). Excellent proximity to pool and beach - one of the nicer units in the whole complex.

We just got back from another amazing stay at Kolea. We went a week before our kids came and stayed in a 2 bedroom the first week and a 3 bedroom the second week. I'll start with the 2 bedroom, 9M, first. It was very comfortably furnished. Had comfortable beds and was very spacious. We ate in most of the nights since it was just the two of us and the kitchen was well stocked and the grill on the porch was very nice. One thing I would like to note is that for a two bedroom 9M had to have had about the best view you can get at Kolea. I would highly recommend this unit to couples or anyone traveling with a few kids. Moving on to the 3 bedroom. When I called Waikoloa Vacation Rentals I asked them what was the best 3 bedroom they had available because we wanted to make this trip special. They pointed us to 12F. After staying there I can believe that it is one of the best units, if not the best. It had an amazing view of the beach and ocean and was close to the pool. The unit was well furnished and I would like to note that the lanai was very nicely furnished and we spent most of our time out there. I would highly recommend this to anyone that it is in their budget. Moving on to the management company, Waikoloa Vacation Rentals. They were great. Anyone that rents units from them gets access to the Hilton Waikoloa, which was great when the family was there. For a vacation rental company they offered the best service I have ever experienced. They check in with you the day after you arrive to see if you need anything. They helped us move units and made sure that we could move directly from one to the other since check out time was in the morning and check in was later in the day. Can't say enough about them or Kolea.............

Waikoloa is very nice and Kolea as a development has some nice amenities (such as the proximity to A Bay), but unfortunately I can’t provide a positive review to this home due to a major insect problem. The property manager was responsive and attempted to resolve the issue (sent out an exterminator on more than one occasion) – but it was never completely solved. The mosquitoes are very, very bad at this home and make the patio almost unusable. After the first day, my family was covered with bites. We eventually noticed that other ground floor tenants in our building did not utilize their patios – so perhaps the problem is not this particular unit but the building or area in general. I have stayed at other Waikoloa properties and never noticed any mosquitoes. But at Kolea 7D, it’s a constant. You can load up with deet, but that’s only a short term solution. If you rent this unit (or maybe on the ground floor in Kolea), you should avoid the patio as much as possible and keep the sliding doors closed. We also had to deal with a centipede attack a whole mess of cockroaches. There were some smaller issues, such as the air conditioning (worked well in master bedroom and living room/kitchen, not so well in other bedrooms) and hot water (not working in master shower) – but these were only minor inconveniences. The main thing is the insects. When we moved into the unit, we cleaned up several dead insects that were in hard to clean spaces (corners, behind furniture, etc.). But the live ones kept coming. Ultimately, my spouse became disgusted by the cockroaches and we moved out five days earlier than scheduled.
