We haven't been to all the islands yet and are in the middle of our trip, but we can already say with certainty that this was the best and most beautiful accommodation! Super nice hosts, Eric gave us lots of tips for restaurants and things to do on the island. The accommodation is in the middle of the jungle and there are only two rooms and we were lucky enough to be the only guests! The room is big and cozy, comfortable high bed, wooden ceiling where you can hear the rain at night and generally the beautiful jungle sounds, which makes you sleep much better, romantic fireplace, bathroom with underfloor heating and heated toilet lid, every detail has been thought of here. A fruit basket and delicious cake were provided on arrival, the fridge was filled with drinks, etc. There is a nice warm whirlpool for relaxing hours in the evening and much more. The accommodation is definitely worth the price, definitely book and don't think twice!

We very much enjoyed our stay here- Eric and Chris are great hosts and the room was large and comfortable with everything to a very high standard. The surrounding sub forest is beautiful- akin to being in the middle of a botanical garden. There’s a communal area on the front deck with a fire pit, which is perfect for the chilly nights. There’s also a hot tub which is perfect after a long hike and quite magical amongst the surrounding orchids and tree fens. There is however no housekeeping; something we were not aware of in advance but seems to be common with Hawaiian hotels during Covid. Eric however kindly did laundry for us.
The one drawback about Volcano is the very constrained restaurant situation: there are few of them, they all seem to operate only a few days a week, and all close early. Unless you make a reservation well in advance you could well end up with nothing. Our room was however well stocked with snacks, no doubt in case of that eventuality.

Aloha and thank you for staying with us. We appreciate you taking the time to leave your detailed review of our property and service. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and your time here in Volcano. Out of an abundance of caution for our guests and staff we have been limiting housekeeping, sorry you weren’t aware of that in advance. We give the rooms a complete refresh and restock midway during guests stays of four or more days. For shorter stays, we are always more than happy to swap out dishes, do laundry, provide fresh towels, refill snacks and beverages, or anything you run low on during your stay. We hope you can make it back and stay with us again in the future.

This place is amazing. It is zen-like in its feel; it is so quiet and relaxing.

The setting is gorgeous, nestled in the rainforest with beautiful flowering plants and trees everywhere. Covered walkways (to a hot tub no less) and patios keep you dry but still outside (a personal favorite of mine). Oh and it is 4 min from the entrance to Hawai’i Volcanos National Park!

The room itself is comfortable and yet luxurious. The woodwork, the windows, and the furniture are spot on for style and comfort. The shower is great. The included touches, coffee, snack bar, water container (which tastes great, not a given in Hawaii) are perfect. Then soft sheets are (chef’s kiss) the icing on the cake.

The owners, Eric and Christopher, are extremely kind and generous with their time. They are happy to provide recommendations, directions, asking about a restock of towels or snacks, or just a friendly chat. They both seem honest to goodness genuine in their happy interactions with guests. It is clear they want to do a good job for their guests, and they do.

It feels like a luxurious and relaxing Airbnb where the owners are onsite to help, but without the awkwardness that normally brings.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your detailed review. We do love what we do and are so glad it shows! We always are looking for ways to improve and make the property more enjoyable for our guests. Come back and stay with us again. The lava is flowing in the crater now and is spectacular. There’s always more to see and do here on the Big Island.

First and Foremost, please ignore any of the 3 star or less reviews as all of them are attributed to the previous ownership - Chris and Eric took over a few years back and have received nothing but 4 & 5 star reviews.

My wife and I arrived in the later evening in the dark and the slight rain after an 18 hour journey from Minnesota. We were greeted enthusiastically by Eric and Chris and given a mini tour of the facility. We were shown to our room (named Haiku) and were amazed at all of the little touches that were provided. Not only was the room clean and appropriately decorated we had fresh fruit, fresh baked banana bread, water, fruit drinks and plenty of snacks for our stay. Fresh flowers were scattered about the bedroom and bathroom along with all of the necessary toiletries.

Needless to say we were exhausted from our trip and the bed and bedding were nothing less than marvelous, we woke up totally refreshed. The small fireplace warmed up the room nicely (as it was chilly by Hawaiian standards).

We did not realize the splendor of the grounds having arrived at night. It is a tropical splendor with awesome plants and flowers and some unique wildlife as well. Lying in bed you look out into the "Jungle" and totally feel serene.

We spent two nights At The Craters Edge and would have gladly spent more. We took advantage of a soak in the hot tub both nights and one morning. Chris and Eric were there when you needed them with just a knock on their front door. They gladly warmed our robes for us in the dryer and provided us some great travel tips for the rest of our stay on Big Island. Their attention to detail is second to none and both are very entertaining to talk to.

My wife and I would highly recommend a stay at The Craters Edge as it conveniently located to Volcano Park and other day trip locations. If we didn't live in MN we would frequent often just to escape city life.

Thank you Eric and Chris for a wonderful experience.

We couldn’t disagree more with the previous reviewer. This was a lovely place to stay while we visited this corner of Hawaii. The extra little touches provided by Eric and Chris made us feel very welcome, and the rooms themselves are peaceful and beautiful. So what if there isn’t a reception desk…we were met as we parked the car, which is much more personal.

Aloha and thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience with us! We greatly appreciate your kind words and are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our lodging. Your feedback means a lot to us, as we strive to provide exceptional service to all our guests. We also wanted to address the previous negative review you mentioned. While we understand that opinions can vary, we regret that the previous guest's experience fell short of their expectations. We take every review seriously and continuously work towards improving our services based on the feedback we receive. That said, we agree that personal touches such as being greeted upon arrival beat waiting for help in a lobby, every time. We aim to create a welcoming environment for all our guests, and it's feedback like yours that motivates us to keep delivering exceptional experiences. Mahalo, Chris

This place is amazing. I don’t write reviews unless a place is over the top excellent or abysmally awful. At The Craters Edge is one of the nicest places my husband and I have stayed. In the middle of a rainforest, down a dark and narrow road, I wondered “what have I gotten us into?” And then we arrived. Greeted by Eric, after welcoming texts from Chris, we were immediately charmed by the nature of the place. We were in the Haiku Garden room. They’ve thought of everything. From readily available umbrellas to earplugs and floor heaters, fresh banana bread and more fresh fruit than we could eat, we were met with convenience, luxury, cleanliness, and comfort. Don’t miss the experience of staying here! Oh yeah, two miles from Volcanoes NP entrance, and several very good restaurants!

We know what it’s like traveling to an unfamiliar place, wondering if you’re in the right spot, where you’re supposed to go etc. We love meeting our guests from all over the world and making them feel welcome and at ease. Glad we succeeded! Happy you found us, and hopefully you will find us again on a future trip to Hawaii.

This was a wonderful place to stay. We loved our room and the amenities were outstanding. Juice in the fridge, lots of snacks, fruit, and cereal. (we don't eat cereal because of high sugar content). The bed was incredibly comfortable and had a heated mattress cover. I loved that.

The bathroom is incredible. Beautiful walk in shower, with a lava stone floor. Bidet that could almost launch you to the moon, it is so powerful! The spa tub is so comfortable and warm after a cold night viewing the lava. (We were wet).

There was only one issue that we found difficult. There are zero lights in the trees to find your way to your car, if you want to go see lava after dark, it is pitch black from the stairs to your car; that is very dangerous. Lights could easily be anchored to the trees.

We will definitely be staying here again.

At the Craters Edge is a small hotel set off the beaten path but close to everything in the area. On our travels we look for stays that add to the memories, not just places to shower and sleep. At the Craters Edge surpassed anything we had thought and was a "Could you believe how great that was?" talking point for the rest of the trip.

Chris reached out ahead of time to make sure he would be ready to receive us. When we got there, he instantly made us feel welcome and showed us the place. There have been tons of reviews about "charming", "beautiful", "idyllic". Let's just say that everyone on here (including me) is falling short on the descriptions. But it wasn't just the beauty of the place, it was the warmth of the feel. Yes, the welcoming touches of fresh banana bread and fruit was really nice, and a snack tray that would shame many a store was very thoughtful. But EVERY element of the place has been thought out and fell together into an amazing experience of hospitality. I have stayed at a lot of places and have never experienced having a french press ready for me each morning.

The room was immaculate, the grounds a beautiful almost botanical garden like feel.

Chris, as I said, was both welcoming and sensitive to space and privacy. Any concerns I had about some lurking landlord vanished in the mist immediately. He was a font of local and regional knowledge that pointed us to things we never would have found.

Thank you so much for making my day! We try really hard to treat people right, and make a relaxing, beautiful spot to enjoy while exploring the Volcano area. It really makes me happy to know that we’re doing a great job. I’m so glad I was able to give you valuable information and make you feel welcome. Eric is the outgoing one who usually greets our guests and answers their questions, so it’s nice to know I was able to fill his shoes while he’s on the mainland. We would love for you to stay with us again in the future if you make it back to the Big Island. Mahalo!

This place is a gem tucked away in the forest! We spent our 10th anniversary here and we're thoroughly pleased with everything. Chris emailed and texted me before arrival letting me know that everything was ready for us. Eric greeted us in the driveway and gave us a quick tour of the suite and jacuzzi area. My husband had called ahead and requested some extras for our anniversary and they went above and beyond to satisfy his requests. Champagne, flowers, chocolate and a lovely card greeted us in our suite. We didn't see anyone else during our stay which was fine with us. We enjoyed the privacy. We had a few dirty dishes that we placed in a basket outside the room before we left for the morning and when we returned, the basket was replaced with clean dishes. Snacks and goodies were provided along with delicious homemade banana bread (thank you Eric!). Close to Volcano National Park and not too far from Hilo. I am absolutely certain that if we needed anything during our stay, it would have been quickly provided. This isn't your typical B&B but it is definitely worth the money! We will be back! Mahalo for making our 10th anniversary memorable.

Nestled in the rainforest of Volcano town and within 2 miles of Volcanos national park, the place is magnificent. Chris, the owner, greeted us upon arrival, gave us a full tutorial of the place and lots of great information about the town.

Our room, wow, felt like we were in heaven. The owners thought of everything, fruit in the room, press coffee, banana bread, snacks and drinks in the fridge, he did our laundry, the inside of the room was if were in the Tag Mahal. We didn’t want to leave….

This place is very special and so glad we stayed here!

Do you have air conditioning? If not might be a dealbreaker for us
Answer from Christopher B

We are located at 4000 feet elevation at the summit of Kilauea Volcano in a much more temperate region of the island. The high temp in summer mocha reach 75-78 and get down to 65 at night. Instead of air conditioning, each room has a gas fireplace for warmth on chilly winter evenings here on the mountain. If it feels warm during a summer day, a screened wall of glass doors can be opened to allow the cool trade breezes to flow through.

Aloha Carol, We are about 30 miles out of Hilo. Easy to get to. We are still pretty open in November so those dates shouldn’t be a problem. We do have a two night minimum. The rooms have a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and electric tea kettle. It comes stocked with coffee, teas, milk, juices, yogurt, hot and cold cereal bowls, fresh baked banana bread, a fresh fruit bowl and a basket of snacks for when your out exploring. Let me know if you have any other questions, we would love to have you stay with us. -Chris
