We own and manage three vacation-rental cottages in the village of Volcano, adjacent to the entrance of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, just an 8-minute drive from our cottages, on the "Big" island of Hawai'i. Two are studio cottages, each with a private bathroom; one is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage. They are homes-away-from-home, with very well-equipped kitchens, stocked with hot and cold cereals, granolas, regular and decaf coffees, green, black, and herbal teas, and condiments (salt and pepper in grinders, extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, sugar, stevia, and CoffeeMate), comfortably furnished, with books and maps about the Park and this island, WiFi, and cable TV. We, the owners, live on or very near the cottages' properties; guests are greeted after they check in but are given privacy during their stays. Each cottage has its own free parking spot. Guests may use the washer, dryer, and laundry soap in the laundry room in the afternoons and evenings.

Detailed Reviews
Not only is this place so charming, the management is over the top kind. The place is so cozy and has everything you need, the location is the utmost peaceful and Kathryn and Kenneth are superbly friendly. From the moment of booking I received confirmation and resources to make the stay most enjoyable. The cottage was pristinely cleaned and has cozy touches such as a heated mattress pad for the chillier elevation. I would recommend this to any solo or couple for a relaxing and warm stay.

We recently returned to Volcano and stayed at the Laukapu Forest Cottages. A very well designed and maintained property amidst the beautiful rain forest and of course, close to Volcano National Park. The facility has every amenity one could desire and the ambiance was outstanding. The host/owner, Kathryn, was incredible and saw to every need with kindness and great information about the area. This is an outstanding location with wonderful personnel. I highly recommend Laukapu to anyone wishing to visit Volcano.

Each cottage is very well equipped. The owners are not just hosts, but friends after out many visits. They are very helpful with suggested places to visit. But the best part is the peaceful setting in the rain forest - serenity at its finest!

We stayed in Laukapu Forest Cottage. Kathryn, the owner, is friendly, caring, kind and informative. The house— built by her husband— is lovely. Extremely good value. Nice little touches and great attention to detail.

This is a tough review to write because I do concur with all other reviewers that Volcano Village is a special place with great people that care very much about the area, the park, and are very gracious in sharing that experience with visitors.
I would also agree that spending at least a few nights 2-3 in the Village really allows you to have time to explore the park and volcano and I'm glad we made that choice, regardless. We recognized up front that this was a family run business and we were completely fine with the reservation process, getting directions and checking in. We have a lot of experience with vacation rentals and we certainly were expecting and looking forward to local living. Kate was more than welcoming upon our arrival as all other reviewers have indicated.
Our problem with our stay was the cottage itself. It did not take but a few minutes inside to feel like something wasn't quite right. There were small fans running on the floors of each room and as we started to look closer at the ceilings and walls, we could see many places where mold was either actively growing or painted over. This was in the bedroom, the living room and very active mold all over the ceiling of the bathroom. In the living room, the ceiling was slightly bowed and cracked at the seam and it made us really wonder what was going on up there. The shower had mold all around the edges and was so unpleasant, we stayed out of it.
We were completely dismayed and even searched trip advisor the first night to see if anyone else had mentioned anything about mold. Just one couple.
We really had empathy for the owners and the tough conditions they are working under to keep out moisture in a rainforest setting. But at the same time, we thought to ourselves, all of the beautiful woodwork in the world does not change the fact that this structure has serious problems and yet its being rented out as a vacation rental.
It was uneasy, especially being worried about the air quality, and by the last night my oldest couged all night long. We left early the next morning and checked into another hotel on the Kona side just for the afternoon so that we could shower and rest before our long flight out that night.
I did take several pictures but I'm not uploading them at this time. I just hope that some remediation and improvements can be made that will make the cottage enjoyable for guests in the future.
This was definitely another travel lesson learned around the potential for unexpected conditions and we will really consider this experience when we look at potential trips to places with similar rainforest climates.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this cottage with my husband. Quaint cottage located in the rain forest of Volcano. The landscaping is beautiful with the cottage on a quiet road. The owner lives across the road if there are any concerns.
The inside of the cottage is lovely with knotty pine walls and nice furnishings. It is exceptionally clean. There is a TV, VCR and CD player. This cottage is well equipped to cook. The hostess brings a basket of breakfast items for your stay. There could have been a little more food as the basket wasn't replenished during our stay. Any special requests regarding food are honored. The hostess provides plenty of information on sites to see in the area .
One problem regarding this cottage is the shower. It is functional but lacking in ammenities. Did see 1 roach but understand this is normal for Hawaii due to the tropical setting even if the place is clean. Note that flannel sheets are used on the bed. Some people may not like this.
It rains alot in Volcano so be prepared. For some people this cottage may be a bit claustrophobic during the rains.
This place is well suited for honeymooners or those wanting a quiet, clean and value priced place to stay in Volcano. While in Volcano try to eat at Thai Thai restuarant as it is wonderful with exceptionally good food.

We spent three nights at Kates' Volcano cottage in January and were very happy with the accommodations. It is a studio cottage with a comfortable king-sized bed and a small kitchen. The cottage is clean and pleasant and Kate is very congenial. The cottage is well stocked with eggs, bread, pastries, juice, fruit, etc. for breakfast. There is also a larger two bedroom cottage in the same area. The location is great as you are about five minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. So you can devote time to the park and not have to drive to Hilo or further at the end of the day. Volcano Village is not large but there are three or four different restaurants if you don't want to cook. A good place to stay if you want to spend some quality time at the park

Aloha. We (57 and 46) have just returned to Britain after a very long journey and an 11 hour time-zone 'loss' so we are very jet- lagged but wanted to post a quick note to say that we had the most wonderful 3 night stay on September 2 - 5.
We know the main Hawaiian Islands pretty well by now from previous and current visits and can readily confirm that the cottage is wonderful and in a delightful secluded real old rainforest spot. We had everything we could desire - even numerous videos and books, many on the specialist local Volcano topics.
The location for sightseeing trips could not be bettered. It is not just very close to the Volcanoes National Park entrance as many have mentioned already but Hilo is also only about 20 minutes north. Hilo, along with much of the surrounding area, still represents the wonderful fine 'old Hawaii which is near impossible to find on Oahu and much of the other main islands. To the south, an easy 30 minutes or so drive away on a good highway, there is the southernmost point of the United States. (Key West is only the southernmost point of the mainland USA!). A few miles before that is Punalu'u - a wonderful famous black sand beach - where we saw Green turtles sunbathing on the sand and also swimming in the very clear water. (There are also the rare giant Hawksbill turtles too and they mostly come out at night to nest in season). We even drove up most of the east coast then cut across west to the Kona coast (don't miss the free dolphin shows at the Hilton, Waikoloa) and returned over the worn and narrow, but very scenic, former military only, Saddle road high up across the side of Mona Loa (the biggest mountain in the world measured from the ocean floor and also the largest by mass).
Back to Kate's: She is an amazing lady full of warmth and great thoughtfulness. Her many special little touches include delightful varied baked goods and macadamia nut chocolates as mentioned by others and she even supplies fruit juice, milk, butter, fruit, ground coffee and much more.
Kate's was very comfortable and she had thought of everything we could wish for. It has a superb location and is of a fine quality having been lovingly built in largely wood by Kate's husband who is a superb craftsman. It is run brilliantly by Kate and it is a rare find today. We can recommend a stay there with complete confidence.
We cannot wait to return as soon as funds permit!

Kahi Malu is a gem in the volcano forest! The cottage itself is a piece of art – the entire room floor is beautiful Hawaiian rare Koa wood. 2 bedrooms are spacious, clean with quality bedding. The master bedroom has a small library with internet access. Kathryn is a great host. We were so impressed that the cottage has no shortage of supplies for a dream vacation. We were welcomed by custom-made breakfast and a nice treat of macadamia nut chocolate! The cottage is secluded yet very easy to find and so close to HNVP (3-5 minutes drive). The garden entrance is beautifully decorated with flowers and plants. Kathryn have gloves and flash lights in the cottage for guests to use for viewing lava flow at night. (BTW, it was an amazing experience you must not want to miss!) We wished we could have stayed longer! We had a cozy and memorable experience over there. Thanks Kathryn for being so helpful, informative and kind.

I dont understand why this question is directed to Trip Advisor. You should contact volcano places for up to date info on rates and availability.
That said, it is a great location, next to the national park. The cottages are in a beautiful rain forest setting and nicely equipped.
