This is a wonderful old historic home with a fascinating history that Barbara and Gary are keen to share with you. We weren't that taken with Hilo itself so it was a relief to have such a nice place to return to at the end of each day. The breakfasts are wonderful with a huge variety of various exotic fruits... We stayed for 4 nights at the historical Shipman House B&B and we enjoyed it very much! The house is placed in tropical and lush surroundings, giving a feeling that you are in the middle of the rain forest but at the same time you feel the past and the history in it. The sounds of the nature (pouring down... More

One of the better B&Bs we've stayed at. We stayed in the cottage next to the regal Shipman House. The cottage has two rooms to rent. The room and bathroom was very spacious with a shared veranda overlooking beautiful foliage. Breakfast was at the main house just across the parking area. The owners, Gary & Barbara, are delightful and give... More

While planning our trip to Hawaii, a friend highly recommended the Shipman House as a must stay. We stayed two nights last October and wish we stayed longer. The room was spacious and comfortable, the porches were wonderful to sit and read, and the breakfast was filled with fresh fruit, juice, homemade granola and muffins. Absolutely delicious! Barbara and Gary... More

My wife and I stayed a week at the Shipman House. Barbara and Gary have a lovely old house very close to downtown Hilo. We stayed in the detached cottage, which is about 50 feet from the main house. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast is exactly like it is mentioned in earlier reviews. It is served on a... More

Let me first address the "too many rules". It can at the beginning be a little off putting, but when you consider the age of this home and it's original floors, doors, windows etc. You have a deeper appreciation for wanting to help maintain it's beauty. Rowing suitcases across 100+ year old wood floors is not the thing to do.... More

I should preface this review by noting that my wife and I have had negative experiences at a couple of previous B&Bs and perhaps that biases this review. In any event, this summer, while traveling around the Big Island we decided to try the Shipman House. There are limited hotel options on this quieter side of the Big Island and... More

I am so sorry you felt this way. The Shipman House is on both the state and national historic registers, a living museum, and we do have some basic house rules to protect it. These are stated on the website, in our initial correspondence, and in our confirmation letter...No shoes, No smoking, Nothing that burns, and Please do not roll... More

Hilo itself, in my opinion, was not my favorite. It's very rainy, has a lot of homeless people in town, and not much to do. However the Shipman House Bed & Breakfast was a lovely place to stay and the hosts were very gracious and knowledgeable. The breakfasts were amazing: a huge tray of at least 7 different kinds of... Aloha Nikki, and thank you for the review. Yes, it was a particularly wet week, but the lush vegetation sure enjoys the rain, and it keeps the waterfalls full. Thanks for the heads-up on the bed, too...will take care of that. No, Hilo does not have much night-life, but it is central to so much sight-seeing. We hope to see... More

We stayed 2 nights in this beautiful, historic home. The room was in the guest house and was quiet and private. The grounds are beautiful, the breakfast exquisite, and the hosts charming. I highly recommend this beautiful home.

We stayed in the room with it's own bathroom (Auntie Carrie's Room) and it was beautiful - we should have stayed another night or two! The highlight is the breakfasts which were one of the best we have experienced, if fresh local fruit and home made muesli & jams interests you - no fried bacon and eggs here! It is... More
