I don't like BnB's and always try to stay at hotels. Staying at Kale Kai changed my perspective completely. We stayed at Pele suite which had a private kitchen and a patio w/ a beautiful view of the bay. The room was tastefully decorated. In the room we found a summary w/ restaurant recommendations, attractions, etc. The owners, Rick and...

We stayed in the Bamboo Room at Hale Kai for two nights during our week-long trip to the Big Island. As other reviewers have mentioned, our suite was the most private of the four. We spent most of our time on the lanai/balcony overlooking Hilo Bay, where we could hear the waves rolling in (we could also hear the ocean...

We stayed in Hale Kai for the first two nights of an 8-night trip to the Big Island. The owners of Hale Kai were gone when we arrived, but they left us a note and our key on the front door, so we wrangled our luggage down one set of stone steps and then up another to reach our room,...

A great experience, with a few little surprises that made our stay that much more enjoyable. First of all, the location is only a couple miles from Hilo - close enough to all the restaurants and shopping but far enough that you enjoy lots of solitude and a quiet night's sleep (well, expect for the annoying coqui frogs that Ric...

Hale Kai B&B is such a great location for exploring the Hilo area from. It's also a great location to just sit, relax, enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean, watch a prime surfing area, view sunrises (if the vog cooperates) and on a clear day see the volcano vents. Rick was always ready with helpful advise & information about...

This was a lovely B&B right outside of Hilo. My wife and I stayed in the Bamboo room and loved it. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the view was incredible. The sea breeze cooled the room perfectly and the sound of the waves crashing on the cliffs below was a great way to fall asleep and...

Hosts Maria & Ricardo welcomed us with the "Aloha Spirit" and treated us warmly as if we were part of their family, serving up delicious breakfasts daily & offering up useful advice on what to see & do while visiting Hilo. Their 4 rooms all have ocean front views that sit high over a cliff, so you get to hear...

The view is the thing here!!! Give the room 10%, view and breakfast 90%. Hilo Bay, whales, cruise ships, surfers, a generous breakfast with imaginative fresh fruit presentations , a quiet safe residential location - all above average. But other reviews led us to expect a bit more than a small minimally furnished room, shabby bath with towels that smelled...

Breakfasts were out of this world, as was the scenery. Whales! And Baby Whales! Helpful, friendly, but not intrusive hosts.

In looking back at my photos it is obvious the highlights were the water below! The pictures on their website a very accurate representations of the rooms. We had no trouble finding Hale Kai Hawaii. It sits in an upscale residential area - very quiet. The parking is a little tight but that's expected. Getting the bags down to our...
