SCP Hilo Hotel strikes a chord with its vibrant atmosphere, as many guests enjoy the trendy decor, live music, and serene common spaces. While the rooms may be seen as basic and in need of a refresh, the hotel's cleanliness and the variety of amenities, including free bikes and paddle boards, receive high marks. The friendly staff and the hotel's prime location near beaches and downtown Hilo are often praised, though opinions on value vary, with some guests expecting more for their money.

Overall, my partner and I had a pleasant stay at SCP Hilo. However, in retrospect, we wish we had spent more time in Kona as there are more resorts and restaurants on that side of the island, and less choice in Hilo. Hilo also felt a bit run down (lots of stores boarded up/permanently closed, restaurants that closed early, large homeless population). So overall, if we visited again we would probably choose to stay in Kona.

Having said that, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay to be close to the Volcanoes National Park, then this is a good option in Hilo. However, for the price, the rooms are only so-so. The building and infrastructure is quite old/dated, and the room was very small, particularly the bathroom (King Bed Bay View room). But the room was clean and they have modernized the decor. The view from the room was also very nice (photos attached). However, worth noting that there was no safe in our room to store valuables while you’re out and about.

In terms of the facilities, the hotel have beautiful gardens and a huge pool with plenty of poolside seating, as well as tables and chairs in a covered area just off to the side of the pool. There is also a communal office space and laundry facilities ($3 per wash or dry cycle, just under $2 for laundry detergent). There’s also coffee, tea, filtered water and kombucha on tap at reception. SCP have a great focus on environmental sustainability, so there are mugs/cups that get washed and no single use plastic (which is awesome!). The staff were also super friendly and accommodating. There was also free parking onsite and we never had an issue finding a park.

Bottom line: a good option if staying in Hilo with great amenities, but the hotel itself is quite old and the rooms small.

The remodeled hotel was very nice and our stay was great.
However, I would warn guests to check their credit card statement shortly after returning home. I found a charge for $543 and 573 dated the two days we stayed there. Called the hotel and the first person I spoke to said one charge was for the first night and the other for the second night. I remarked that I would never have stayed there for over $500 per night.
Another person came on the phone and she said I was charged the higher amount when I checked in. It was a way of verifying that my credit card was valid. I was not told this. I was sent a message the day before we checked out that I could do the check out on my phone so I did and I received a receipt for $540. The second person told me I should not have checked out on my phone then I wouldn't have gotten double charged. I told her I should not have been sent this message since I was already charged the when I checked in or there should have been a note saying I was already charged.
This person made it seem as though it was my fault for the double charge. When I returned my room keys the clerk said everything was fine and nothing was said about being charged twice.
I suggest that the guest be told about being charged when they check in, not send a message that I can check out on my phone and most importantly be cordial to the guests when the hotel makes an error.
My charge account has since been credited the error.

I love everything about SCP Hilo Hotel! Working in live theater, we are often responsible to find accommodations for our musical artists and SCP is our trusted go-to spot. Their staff embodies the welcoming spirit of true aloha, the property is so pretty and meticulously landscaped, and most importantly - the rooms are always clean and fresh! Location is prime, they are just footsteps away from one of the most beloved ponds in Hilo, and not even a ten-minute drive from downtown nightlife.

The former "Hilo-Seaside" hotel has been thoroughly refreshed under the new name "SCP". The musty carpet has disappeared, the lobby and rooms have a fresh, contemporary ambience.

The rooms are big enough, 2 double beds, opposite a nice combination of sideboard with drawers and desk, mirror, seating, suitcase benches. An alcove with a refrigerator and an open shelf, a very small but bright bathroom with a very good shower in the bathtub. Unfortunately, the beds are not really good, a lot of soft foam rubber that makes strange noises when you get up, but it's OK.

Narrow balcony with chairs. (You should note the different categories - there are also rooms in the basement with the same equipment without a balcony, very dark.

The motel style has of course remained with the somewhat intricate 3-story construction around the inner courtyards, and you still have to lug your suitcases because there are no elevators.

In the public areas, friendly seating areas have been created, there are books and games, and in the lobby there are water dispensers as well as coffee, tea and hot water. Paddle boards and bikes can be rented (first come, first served), and there is a small gym available.

Very friendly staff, always with a smile.

In the lobby in the evenings on some days there is live music (moderate, and only until 9 p.m. at the latest).

The hotel is just a few minutes from the airport, although the aircraft noise is negligible, as hardly one flight per hour passes over the building. The more annoying are the jazzed-up, bubbling pickups and other vehicles with roaring Music driving past.

The rooms are generally very noisy, both from the street and from the neighboring rooms.

Right next door is the "Coconut Grill" restaurant, and opposite, on the water, is the "Ponds" restaurant.

A positive to start. The staff at the hotel are lovely, particularly those working the front desk. Kudos to them. The rest of this review is not their fault! The hotel is an outdated low-end motel that has been given a very surface-level facelift. Posted images are glossy and highly stylized versions of reality. The original room we were given was two flights up - no elevator in the hotel though most people traveling to HI have large suitcases - in a back corner, with the one window in the room looking out onto the cleaning staff's break alley, dark and bleak. The room had a sad decades old television taking up most of the desk, and the bed was soft and lumpy. The killer for us though, as this was a work trip, was that there was no closet in the room. Nowhere to hang anything. When I called to ask about changing rooms I was told that if I wanted a closet I'd have to go to an upgraded room. These rooms are labeled peaceful, and they have no tv's. I agreed to make the switch, only to find that the "closet" was a 12-inch bar with 5 hangers. There was an iron with no ironing board, a huge blank wall that would have accommodated a tv just fine, an unnecessarily fancy and behemoth toilet so large you could barely walk into the bathroom....and it goes on and on. The peaceful room was on the ground floor of the hotel along a busy walkway, so not particularly peaceful. The hotel itself is not in a great neighborhood - for Hawaii - and guests would be better served by having more food and drink options in the hotel itself. For some reason not even crackers are sold in the lobby, though high-end immunity drinks are. The gym contained as its only offerings two peleton bikes, one of which didn't work. I could go on but I won't. I do not recommend staying at this hotel.

We stayed here when our Airbnb did not work out. The bed was very comfortable, the water was hot, there was a small fridge in the room and a bidet in the bathroom. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Ivonne.
I would say it's a 3 star hotel. Very basic. The main negative was that the room air conditioner was very noisy. My husband is a light sleeper, so it woke him up. We did end up not using the AC at night and relied on the ceiling fan. They offered to give us a different room, but all the other rooms had the same noisy AC.

We also appreciate your feedback about the air conditioner noise, and we’re sorry it affected your husband’s sleep. While we offered to move you to another room, we understand the inconvenience. "Resort style" hotel, common areas, swimming pool and well-kept greenery. Possibility to rent free SUPs to ride in the bay in front of the hotel. The rooms, however, are not up to par.

Despite having upgraded from the basic room (suffocating especially on the ground floor with only one window without any privacy that you have to forcefully keep closed with the curtains drawn) to a premium one with a lake view, the room and especially the bathroom are not looked after at all. Good cleaning.

Very convenient hotel for visiting the southern part of the island (Volcanos National Park, Black beach, Green beach), decidedly inconvenient for the beaches on the West and North-West coast.

It takes a lot that I leave again after the first night despite several days of reservation. Never in my life have I experienced such a bad hotel room.

- the only window was towards the hallway, so no view outside
- the window had no glass pane, but a kind of roller blind made of glass rectangles. Thus no sound insulation. Neighbors were unhindered to hear and worse still the airport. The hotel is located directly in the flight path of Hilo Airport and there the planes are on the way from 6 am and until shortly before midnight.
- the air conditioning was extremely noisy, much louder than in other hotels
- the place was very cramped. The suitcases had to be placed on the table because there was nowhere else to go.

Subsequently, I found a free apartment in Hilo at short notice, which at the same cost offered a much nicer location, extremely much space and absolute peace.

The Soul Community Planet (SCP) Hilo Hotel is on our short list of favorite places to stay in Hawaiʻi because of its people, new look and feel, pet-friendliness, and its commitment to the community and the environment.

We first stayed here when it was the Hilo Seaside Hotel back in early 2020. Returning two years later, we’re happy to see it still has the same charm with a healthy infusion of renovations. We love all the little (and big) touches they’ve made from the room’s wooden ceiling fan and raised shower head, to the front lobby with its subtle nods to local history and culture. The entire property features natural wood furniture made by local artisans. The Commons room in particular features a lot of local pieces, and is a cool, quiet place where I could work remotely and join video calls on the hotel’s solid WiFi (while enjoying some Kona coffee from the lobby).

The landscaping is lovely and the pool is picturesque with its deep blue tile and Buddha statue sitting nearby. For a cooler, refreshing swim, take a plunge in the “ice pond” (an inlet of Reeds Bay) across the street. Its clean, clear brackish (slightly salty) water is easy on the un-goggled eyes and if you’re lucky, you might just get to swim past a local honu (turtle).

The real draw for us though, and what will keep us coming back, is the hotel’s amazing staff. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Emily, Priscilla, Charlee, Megan, Josh, Jared, and Bree! They are genuinely friendly, inviting, and helpful people that are a ton of fun to talk to. Their wealth of island knowledge runs deep so I encourage you to take a minute and have a real conversation with any of them.

We just stayed at the SCP for a couple nights in late July. Overall I recommend this hotel. We were really happy with our stay and just want to add some perspective to the reviews.

Mostly, we really liked the vibe; super nice people, down to Earth, a mix of tourists but also Hawaiians staying there (there were, for example, some families and kids from Oahu there for a baseball tournament). They have done a good job with adding little amenities. The live music as night was very cool.

The rooms are what they are; if you are looking for luxury you won't find it here, but neither will you find it anywhere else in Hilo. (We walked over to the bigger hotels over on the Bay; they are very very tired, and I would stay here ten times out of ten over those places). Rooms were very clean, comfortable, beds are good, they have AC and ours had a nice view of the koi pond. It was tight for four of us (kids ages 9 and 11) but we managed fine for a couple nights.

The nice surprise for us was the little cove on the Bay out front. Each day this becomes kind of like a community swimming hole. The water is clear, turtles swimming around, and kids are jumping off rocks and the seawall into the water. Families picnicking on the grass. We took the paddleboards out and just hung in the water for an hour and swum. Not a lot of tourists which is great, and of course, is sort of the point of traveling. We ate at Pond's across the cove one night which was a similar vibe.
