Puakea Ranch was an incredible hotel! The location was perfect, splendid isolation in the Hawaiian countryside, but only a few minutes’ drive to the town of Hawi for whatever you need. We stayed in the James Cottage, which was fantastic. Comfortable bed, charming decor, and a hot tub as well! Also one the greatest showers I’ve ever had. The ranch itself is a lot of fun. There is a nice pool, pleasant walking paths, and lots to see in terms of gardens, plant life, and animals (we made friends with the dog that kind of wanders the grounds). This is a very rustic sort of hotel experience of course, and it may not be for everyone. All the modern conveniences are available, of course, but there are geckos and a few bugs that make their way into the room. And some of the animal life, like the peacocks, can make some noise. But it’s a working ranch in the Hawaiian countryside, what do you expect? As we were relaxing on the deck, gazing out onto the ocean, and admiring Maui in the distance, none of that seemed to matter. I highly recommend Puakea Ranch for a unique and relaxing experience!

This was our second time staying here and once again we enjoyed the excellent location, the great view, the peace and quiet and the lovely house. But we were surprised by the deferred maintenance. We stayed in Miles Away. The washer, dryer, and the garbage disposal were all broken. Not having a dryer was not a big issue except that because of all the rain we could not get our towels dry. Half of the windows were propped open with sticks and the other half we could not get closed. This was important because it was quite cool in the evenings with high wind and rain. There is a nice little pond next to the house but the cover on one of the two chairs was shredded. And the front door could not be locked--maybe not important since there is a gate but we were surprised. Finally we did not see any staff the whole time to ask. It is lovely rustic, but expensive rustic

I rated this a 5 not because it was a luxurious getaway but because of the peacefulness, solitude and scene. The ranch was so quiet (minus the crazy wind advisories we had for much of our stay). My kids had fun exploring on their own. Was great to unplug and get away from the crowds and development. The area felt like a full detachment from every day life. The pool is small but does the trick, except on cooler, windier days. We stayed in Cowboy House and it was perfectly suited for our family of 4, even an extra bedroom. Have already recommended it to a few friends and as I write this from an Airbnb in Kona, I miss it and only wish we had been able to book for more days.

We stayed in the James Cottage for 7 nights in February. We arrived in the dark, but found the turn-off easily. We punched in the gate code and quickly found our cottage. The cottage was really nicely decorated inside, with a comfy bed, sitting area and kitchenette. We had a lovely lanai, where we ate all our meals. We awoke in the morning to a beautiful view of the ocean. We also had an array of visitors such as peacocks, chickens, a goat and a duck named Lucky. We enjoyed our daily interactions with these lovelies the entire week. There are also friendly donkeys and horses that love to get a nice scratch:) The ranch is located about 2 miles from the cute town of Hawi, which has a few small grocery stores, a few restaurants and some cute shops. If you want to stock up on groceries, better to do it in Kona or the grocery store in the Mauna Lani resort. The ranch has its own organic garden that guests are allowed to harvest from, which was amazing! Hawi also has a farmers market on Saturdays. I can't begin to explain the peacefulness and beauty of our stay at the ranch. We have always stayed at condos, when visiting Hawaii, so this was so different and so unique. There was no A/C, but the ventilation from all the screened windows and the ceiling fans were enough to keep us cool. There is a lovely pool on the property as well. Lucky, the duck joined us on some of our swims:). This is a ranch, there is no concierge, but the owner was quick to answer questions for us. If you need a more sterile environment, this might not be a good fit. There are geckos and bugs, but we all got along just fine. If you are looking for a lodging opportunity that oozes charm, this is for you! I literally almost cried when I had to leave.

PROs: peaceful, out of traffic, beautiful furnitures, beautiful paintings, decor. Grounds well taken care of. 'The Grarden' is a rejuvenating oasis. Any farm animal is available for petting. The stone pools are phaenomenal. CONs: phone doesn't work (is that really a problem?) Conclusions: it deserve its glorious reputation, hands down.

The perfect combination of an off the beaten trail location, beautiful tropical setting and old Hawaii style make Puakea Ranch a most unique place to stay and a truly relaxing vacation experience. We throughly enjoyed our four night stay in the “Miles Away” bungalow—it was absolutely charming, cozy and comfortable—like a much loved home away from home. Located on a hillside with a view over the ocean—gives the bonus of sunsets and starry night skies all from the front porch or just steps from it. It was so clear one night we were able to see the milky way. “Miles Away” with its delightful blend of rustic, shabby chic and funky, Hawaiiana ranch style, was ideal for the three of us, but would have been equally fine for four too. Light and airy and well appointed, including a half bath inside. The adjacent bath house was a retreat (and a real treat) all on its own with Japanese soaking tub and rainfall shower. We enjoyed the fresh eggs from the farm stand, salads gathered from the garden and the oranges, tangerines and limes picked from the trees around the bungalow. We enjoyed strolling the ranch, meeting the residents— the donkeys, goat, fiesty roosters, chickens, cats and dogs. Not to mention just lounging by dipping pool. Quaint and picturesque, nearby Hawi, has most everything you need in the way of supplies along with some great dining options too. Christy (the owner) put much thought and effort Into restoring, updating and furnishing the ranch’s four cottages to make them inviting —Thank you, Christy for creating such a special charming place and welcoming visitors to it! As a host Christy is there if you need her, but otherwise you’ll be left to feel as if you have the place to all to yourself . . . Miles Away from everything but peace and quiet! We look forward to returning . . . . soon

How many places have you stayed where you try to create an excuse so you can use the shower again? A shower in the “bath house” (that name doesn’t do it justice) at Puakea Ranch allows you to stand under a rain shower head while viewing the ocean or the Hawaiian hillside in the distance. Fabulous. Yes, you have to take 3 steps outside from your room (James Cottage) to the shower, but a minor inconvenience as far as I’m concerned Did I mention there’s a private hot tub in between your room and the shower house? This is a unique lodging experience You’re on a working ranch up on the northern tip of Hawaii with a western view of the ocean. What you lose in resort amenities, nearby restaurants, etc, you gain in privacy and solitude. It’s about 20-30 mins to the nearby beaches on either coast Hawi & Kapaau are cute little towns 6-7 mins down the road You have a private pool down a walking path from your cottage that is heaven. (It’s not heated but I was grateful for the cool water) If you’re freaked out by nature & prefer resort amenities outside your door step then this probably isn’t your place. You’re definitely not roughing it but you are on a ranch after all. The wind blows, there’s usually a little rain every day followed by lots of sun and there are (gasp!) animals, gekkos and ants around, but none in our cottage. We look forward to a return trip. Christie was a great, non-obtrusive host.

For us, it was not as well maintained as we expected, basing our expectation on prior reviews and the website photos and descriptions. There is a rustic charm to the restored cottages, but housekeeping and maintenance need more attention, in our opinion. If we had seen photos/known the status that things like the sink and tub, cabinets, outdoor shower with broken off knobs, picnic tables with heavy bird droppings, etc, would be in, we would not have booked. But, many other guests have enjoyed their stay very much, so obviously it's the perfect fit for some. Being summer, with lots of fruit in season, we thought there would be fresh eggs and fruit in the fruit stand, but there was only a petrified piece of fruit in a basket which gave the appearance of neglect. As other have said, there are a lot of geckos (very cute) and bugs inside, and we expected this, but did not expect the sheer number of bugs and gecko poop inside and we caught 3 giant bomber roaches that came out at night, and one german roach was in the bedside lampshade. The little flying bugs and beetles we didn't mind, but there were a lot of them, so anyone squeamish about bugs would not do well. **Of particular concern was the condition of the floor in the Toy Box room with toys and things for children-- the floor has a hole and soft spot that my friend's daughter nearly stepped into (see included video). We were all surprised about the condition as this is a safety hazard. We did enjoy the peace and quiet and seeing the two donkeys, chickens (though we didn't know where we could get eggs?) and a goat. A friendly cat came around at night. It's true you are not given a key to the cottage so you can't lock it when you leave but we were ok with that and valuables were with us when we left. There are gaps in the doors and holes in the screens that let the bugs in especially when lights are on at night. Keeping lights off seems to help with the bugs. It was windy the first night we were there and the windows and doors rattled a lot, so light sleepers like my husband may have a difficult time sleeping. See the photos we posted so you can form your own opinion as to whether this is the right lodging for you.

The Big Island has so many great properties that make the much of it's tropical splendor but the Puakea Rain is, for my family's taste, the best, if not one of the most unique. A cluster of impeccably restored ranch-houses that was once part of the grand Parker Ranch, Puakea is one of the few authentic historic spots one can stay in on the island. Moreover, all the personal touches of the owners, from an enormous kitchen garden one can forage for fresh salads and other meals, to beautiful art and cozily furnished rooms (love all the canopy beds!) gives this place more of a feel of a cherished personal holiday home of an especially tasteful and cool relative than some bland resort. The location, on a hill overlooking some of the most important beachfront pre-European holy sites, and two miles down the road from the Bohemian village of Hawi, is on one of the best pacels on the North Island...indeed given all the amenities and coziness of the Ranch and local attractions we seldom ventured more than 15 miles from the property. And because we were far from the glittering lights of Hawaii's mega resorts we had some of the most clear starry skies and perfect sunsets from our broad porch overlooking the basalt plain leading to the sea. Paradise is an overused word on a place like Hawaii, but this ranch, for my family, defines it.

If you want a resort and expensive restaurant by the pool scenario, this isn't for you. If you want quiet, starry nights, and room for your kids (and yourself) to roam around, then this is your place. It's the first place we've ever booked our next stay before we left. I even had mixed feelings about leaving a review and finding it harder for myself to book! We traveled with our 9 year old daughter. Hawi is cute and has Nakata market for groceries. Heading to Pololū valley for a sunrise hike is strongly recommended.
