My friend and I stayed at Mahana House for three nights while exploring the Hilo side of Hawaii, and we're so happy we did! The inn was small with only a few other people staying there, and the rooms were spacious, clean, and bright. At night you can hear the sounds of the rain forest which is such a peaceful, special experience. Randy and Alison were helpful and kind, and kept the kitchen well stocked with plenty of coffee, milk, eggs, bread, ice, and other basic items. It was the perfect place to return to after a long day exploring Volcanoes National Park or other local parks, and equally great for a lazy morning to sip coffee on the lanai. We highly recommend this for anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing stay in the Hilo area!
Where to begin? We stayed six nights in the Corner Guest Suite and used Mahana House as our base to explore the Big Island. The room was pristine in cleanliness, It had everything we needed: coffee pot, tea pot, toaster, microwave, etc. The bed was comfortable. There were guidebooks on the table, which we used. The bathroom was well stocked, including bath robes. We really loved this room. We did use the big kitchen in the common area to make dinner one night and it worked out well. We spent as much time on our lanai as we could, especially in the mornings when the breezes were blowing. There are several very friendly cats on the property and they are hilarious. They definitely added to the ambience! We bumped into Randy, the owner, a couple of times and his recommendations were always spot on. He was helpful, friendly and fun. We took advantage of the beach towels and umbrella stored in the laundry room for guest use (they also have coolers, chairs, etc. for use). The main kitchen is well stocked with cookware. If i have a complaint, it is that a lot of the spices folks have left behind could not be used because they are stuck in their bottle (it is very humid here). So maybe clean out the leftovers a little better. But this is a total nitpick, b/c we found everything else perfect. We loved the common area room and lanai, as well. We used the grill outside and it worked fine. We took advantage of a game in the game pile the night we ate there and hung out. By the end of the week, we felt so at home here and we are now missing it everyday. This place is a treasure. An absolute treasure. If we return to the Big Island, we will absolutely stay here. We cannot recommend it highly enogh.…
It was such a neat and beautiful place! we stayed for four nights for our honeymoon and the place was very spacious, clean and very nicely decorated! i loved how the owners let us use their netflix account, the laundry machine and the kitchen and all. The view in the morning is amazing too!(see the photos attached and u will know what i mean). Very tropical and colorful plants all around us with just the perfect amount of breeze ❤️ A cup of coffee outside on the outdoor bench made our start of the day perfect. Thank you!! :)
Our family of 4 (including two teenagers) were in two adjoining rooms at Mahana House for two nights in mid-April 2022. We should have booked another as none of us were ready to depart. We drove up from Volcano House to do waterfalls, botanical gardens, long walks and the Umauma Experience. It was the perfect spot for our family before we went to the west side of Island and we fell in love with area and can't say enough nice things about our hosts, including the cats. The recommendations of our hosts in the material we received before arriving were spot on in every respect. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the drive from Hilo was stunning and the Umauma Zipline is one of best my kids have done (according to them). Our walk over the pedestrian bridge at the Highway down to the river and beach (about 5 miles both ways going downhill and then back up hill) was nothing short of a "blast". Laundry was super easy. The shared spaces and rooms are beautiful. Make sure you stop in Hilo to get food as there is very little to none for miles, but do recommend the country store and cafe in Paapaloa about 7 miles north on the Highway--Pizza was very good. Just about every direction to a place is about mile markers so pay attention to them on highway. We can't wait to come back.…
The Mahana House Country Inn was a fabulous surprise. My wife and I booked a cottage without thinking too much about it and assumed that we would be staying in a, well, cottage. Nope. We were in an exceptionally well-appointed, utterly immaculate free-standing house with a wide veranda overlooking the farm's fruit trees and beyond them, the ocean. The cottages had everything you could want -- small kitchen, fabulous beds, a shower pebbled with what looked to be local stones. I kept having the experience of wanting something -- a particular kind of kitchen knife, a place to set my coffee -- and there it was, ready to hand. The hosts have really thought of everything here. It's right up the road from Akaka Falls too and well-located for hiking or runs into Hilo, while at the same time feeling remote and private.…
I was delighted when I walked into the beautiful cottage at Mahana House! The view of the ocean was breathtaking! The cottage is brand new with a wonderfully comfortable king bed. The bathroom is spacious with a walk in shower done in gorgeous tile work. The lanai is large with comfy deck chairs and dining table. I watched the sun rise each morning wrapped in the quilt that had been provided. The kitchen was stocked with coffee and tea. It us a short drive into Hilo but there are many beautiful parks and reserves nearby. It was a lovely and peaceful place to enjoy on the Big Island.
This Country inn is the best choice if you want to relax in comfort and enjoy the the natural beauty of the Big Island. We stayed in one of the new cottages that was just awesome!! You have a lanai that looks out at the ocean and you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise. The adjustable bed was so comfortable. The mini kitchen provides you with just about anything you can think of except a stove, which you have access to in the main house if you would like. We enjoyed walking around outside around the grounds and even saw a couple of wild boars. The property and our cottage was very clean.
This was a lovely place to stay and I am so happy we came across it! The rooms are spacious with a large King size bed and walk in shower. The rooms have their own sink with dishes and a toaster, microwave, fridge etc. but if you want to cook, you can go into the main house to use the big kitchen. With COVID, we were happy to be able to just go straight to our room and not have to go through a main area before. They've done a great job of lending some privacy on the lanai's and they were such a great spot to just sit and enjoy the view and a nice beverage. We also walked around the farm which was fun to see the different fruits growing and got some delicious tangerines and lemons! We wish we would have stayed a few more days, highly recommmend!
If you are looking for a place to de-stress this is it! Our room was spacious, clean, had everything we needed. It was private and quiet, except for the frogs that sang us to sleep! The owner was very attentive to anything we needed. The common area was well stocked with cooking utensils and appliances. There were also games snd puzzles for rainy days! Downtown Hilo was about a half hour away. I would highly recommend for a quiet peaceful accommodation!
If you are looking for a place to stay in the Hilo area, this is it. My wife and I loved this place. You are on a working farm. They turned one building into a country inn with four rooms. The room is large and spacious. There is a kitchenette in the room. However there is also a full kitchen and family room that all have access to. We brought groceries and saved some money by cooking. There is also a grill on the property for guests to use. The fresh fruit from the farm was yummy! Note that there are four cats that hang out here, Twila, George, Gobo and one other gray one. All are very friendly and want to be pet. Since we love cats, we wanted to take them all into the room (a no-no though). You can see the ocean from the back lanai, although it is in the distance. Such a relaxing place and my wife and I would definitely stay here again. Randy & Co are very welcoming and have a bunch of ideas of things to do for you. Note: The Hilo area is pretty far from Kona (about two hours). Don’t underestimate the time it can take to get there, especially if you are behind a slow moving truck. Looking for something to do, we spent a whole day in the Kona area visiting coffee plantations. Try the black sand beach south of the Volcano National Park (we saw a turtle!). Locally there also is the chocolate tour at Hawaiian Crown which is really interesting and comes with samples (fruit/beans & chocolate of course).…
