This spot is just great. Clean, hot water, ocean view *yes a rooster, too* ... kind & available & flexible staff, and tasty, reasonably priced food. It's got so much lovely, classic, Hawaiian history. plus, Free parking (need a car to get to the area), no extra frills, plus you have to book over the phone, like the old days! they have wifi and to-go coffee cups! 10/10 would recommend!

If you’re looking for clean affordable ($80) rooms, this is the place. It’s historic (over 100 years old) but well maintained. Good internet and a great restaurant. Stayed here many times and never disappointed.

Upfront: this place is affordable!!! Cheapest option I could find on the Big Island. And, it's "historic" (aka old). That means a dining room from a time past -- heavy, dark woodwork; high ceilings with giant fans, decent breakfast. Good ocean view, though not specifically on the beach. Rooms were clean and simple. Location works pretty good -- basically halfway from Kona Airport to Hawaii Volcanoes if you want to go south on the Highway Belt Road. On the downside....being budget and historic also means that the walls are paper thin (be prepared to hear the intimate activities of people in next room), open windows (meaning smokers on the balconies pollute air in your room), noise from the birds and chickens (yes...chickens) ALL NIGHT. I was stunned how noisy birds could be. Honestly, was so noisy it was difficult to sleep. Also, dining room closes early -- like 7:30 pm or 8:00 pm. So does everything else in the town. Just makes it tough if you've spent the whole day out. Honestly, if I had stayed here just one night I probably would have been completely charmed by its un-modern characteristics. Two nights, though, was enough to make me think this was a bad choice.

We had planned on splitting our time between the Hilo side and the Kona side. This hotel was where we had planned to stay for the second half of our trip, but after one night here, we decided to go back to our hotel on the Hilo side. We took three days worth of clothing and left the rest of our luggage here and drove back. Came back here the day before our flight back home since we had a very early morning flight to catch. We get it, it's an old hotel but, contrary to other reviews, it didn't feel clean. There were stains (coffee?) on the wall above the bed, the carpet looks like it hasn't been shampooed in at least a decade and overall it just felt unkempt. The ceiling fan was basically useless. We had just gotten back to our room and were sitting on the bed when I saw some kind of bug crawling on the bed. That was it for me. We packed our stuff and left in search of a place to stay for one night. The restaurant was ok. My husband did say the pork chop was pretty good. The restaurant staff are very friendly. Good enough place to eat but, for us, not the place to stay. We're not looking for fancy, just something clean and inviting. This hotel was not it for us.

We have to go here to eat pork chops every time we go to the big island. There is a quirky little restaurant at the hotel and it's kinda a local place. Very simple but has great pork chops and I love the character of everything. I love it when we take new people and their surprise at the good food at an odd place.
