As a working guest ranch, the property is traditional cowboy style and includes a main ranch house with four double bedrooms with shared bathrooms and ten cozy cabins within the grounds of the property (all with private bathrooms). We offer a variety of experiences based on the of year. The Spring and Fall are dedicated to the full ranch experience with lots of riding and cowboy work! And July and August are more laid back with trail riding and fishing. Guests are welcome to use all the rooms and amenities of the ranch house including internet, tv and phone. After finishing a tradition western style supper (included in the price for the all-inclusive packages), guests are invited to sit by the log fire in the living room or enjoy live music and a drink in the saloon where guests socialize and get to know other guests of the ranch. Please contact us for a listing of activities available at the ranch as well.

We pulled in at dusk and were greeted by a cowboy sitting on the saloon porch with his dog and an open fire pit. It was neat to see the authenticity of this working ranch. One of the cowboys was breaking a horse to saddle the morning we left, and it was really amazing to see him doing this. It was interesting to be a guest at a place like this, where I felt like I should be able to do something to help, but had no idea how to do anything of what they were doing (and certainly nothing was expected of me). Our cabin was cozy and comfortable. We did have a little trouble with water pressure and running out of hot water, but I would consider that to be as much our own difficulty as city dwellers as any fault of the ranch. I am just so grateful that we had any warm water and electricity as well as Wi-Fi in a remote location. Our horseback riding experience was a wonderful change of pace from being tired of the nose-to-tail walking in a line that we had seen at other places. We had a very nice Swedish young woman who guided us across the ranch land. We enjoyed this very much. Everyone was very kind and helpful, and genuine.

We were at Kara Creek for a weeklong "cowboy experience" in June. We stayed on the property and rode their fabulous horses out with the cowboys each day. What a trip. Cody and his crew were so accommodating and more than patient. The horses on the ranch are top notch and were great to ride. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were prepared with a smile and the 'always open' main house made us fee right at home. We thoroughly enjoyed our work on the ranch, be it rounding up strays, herding cows, or branding calves. It was quite an education and we were very sorry to pack up and head home. We will be back next year for sure. Highly recommend.

A great real cowboy experience. Two great cowboys, Tanner and Devon, there to make your riding experience perfect. Lodging is basic but comfortable. Note—bring soap n shampoo. Meals were all homemade and tasty. Spend time in the saloon with Monty “Hawkeye” Henson, a Rodeo legend. Staff made every effort to make us feel like family. Horses were awesome, matched to your ability. During rides you can do as much or as little as makes you comfortable. We’ve already booked next year

This place is amazing. We have stayed many of places over the years This has to be our favorite. By the time you leave you are family. The ranch itself is beautiful. Your front yard view is like a post card. A mountain valley with horses grazing and playing. At night a million stars and deer running through the valley where the horses were playing. The staff is for lack of a better word amazing. They cook for you tell you stories and just make you feel at home. Hawkeye who works the ranch was awesome. He's a great story teller funny and will entertain you with his guitar at the saloon at night. I could go on and on but I suppose I've gone on long enough. Bottom line if you get the chance to stay here take it. You won't regret it. We will definitely be back. Lastly we would just like to thank everyone at the ranch

We had a wonderful week here. We got all the riding our butts could handle and loved the time spent herding cows. Everyone was super friendly and if you went away hungry, it was your own fault. The food was delicious. The horses were well trained and the scenery was spectacular.

I cannot wait to go back. The accomodations were perfect. I brought my dog and we had a cabin with a kitchen: coffee, fridge, sink and stove. Had an electric fireplace, which was a nice bonus. Easy walk to the main house for tasty meals! On site bar and barn, easy to find, well maintained. Actual local cowboys and solid ranch horses to manage the 450+ acres. <3

We searched high and low to find a real working ranch (not a dude ranch) that checked all our boxes. Kara Creek Ranch came out on top of our list, and then when we spent a week there in October 2022 we found that there were more boxes that we didn’t even know existed!! We had a spectacular time and have booked to go back twice in 2023. Great staff and horses and food and accommodations and on and on and on….. Perfect place to be included in all the ranching activities. (Small note - bring all your toiletries. This isn’t a resort so no fancy little shampoo bottles! If you forget stuff there’s all sorts that’s been donated by previous guests). 9.999999 out of 10 - small deduction for the amount of cigarette smoke in the saloon on site (we’re non smokers).

We just came home from the ranch trip. A week on horseback moving cows during calving season is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Monte and his daughter Cassie, the owners, really do a good job and we thank them for opening their home to a bunch of "city slickers." Mason, Cody and Orin were the ultimate cowboys, and have more patience than most humans ought to. The rest of the staff make you feel like part of the family and right at home. The meals are great, the cabins are comfortable and everyone is friendly! Thanks for a great week!

This was such a great trip, the place is lovely, accommodations clean and comfortable, food good, but most importantly the owners and staff make you feel so welcome. The riding was wonderful, compliant horses and excellent opportunity to really get the feel of ranch life. Thank you Monte and Cassie for providing us with such a wonderful time,.

So I thought I’d write an update since my first visits in 2015. I’ve been to Kara Creek every year since. I do other trips throughout the year but keeping finding myself back there each fall. It feels like such a homely place so it’s always great to visit. There are so many repeat guests, which means there are friends to hang out with as well as new friends to be made. The horses and riding continue to be amazing, and Kyle, one of the wranglers, takes care to match each guest with the kind of horse they like. The food is better than ever, with lots of variety. Bacon and eggs every day for breakfast, usually with some kind of toast, muffins, pancakes or cinnamon rolls. There’s fresh fruit and yoghurts. Lunch is on the truck tailgate while you’re out moving cows, so it’s usually a sandwich and crisps. Shannah always makes something great for dinner, like tacos, beef brisket or spaghetti & toast. The guys have recently done some work on the ranch. They built a nice patio to sit outside, a fun saloon to drink (BYOB), play pool, make friends, listen to some music (usually played live by a neighbour) or learn to two step! There’s also a small store now selling hats, T-shirt’s, hoodies and other ranch merchandise. Overall it’s just a great place, with great food, great people and great horses!

Hi
You can book directly with Cassie at the ranch, to include all accommodation, meals etc and to arrange airport pick up.
Tripadvisor won’t let me include the email addresses here so I will inbox them to you.
For flights, the nearest large airport is Rapid City (RAP)
I hope this helps.
