Detailed Reviews
We just got back from the 7D Ranch and it was one of the best trips we've ever taken! We actually came once 6 years ago and I loved it so much we had to come back. It's a family owned and operated ranch and the managers and much of the staff are members of the same family. You can really feel the love they have for the ranch and history there.
The setting is beautiful! The views you get from the ranch itself are stunning, but what you see when you are on a ride or a hike is even more amazing. The staff will work with you to make sure that you are doing the activities that you want each day and that you are having the best possible time you can.
The food is honestly amazing. My wife and I have very tricky dietary restrictions (we are both pescatarian and I am also lactose intolerant) but they accommodated us at every meal. I'm used having to figure stuff out on my own or eating just whatever I could, but the cooks always made something special and it was always delicious! Plus there's fresh baked cookies that you can grab any time of day.
The cabins are great, they are cute and rustic looking but not rustic feeling (if that makes sense). They are well insulated and each one has a great wood burning stove that heats them right up on cold nights. All of them have at least one full bathroom and we never had any issues with hot water or anything like that.
We don't have kids, but for scheduling reasons were not able to come during an adults only week, but that didn't affect our time at all. The kids mostly spend their time with each other and the "kid wranglers" and we had a great time riding and hanging out with the other adult guests.
We've been to the 7D twice already and I definitely think we'll be going back again in the future!

I have had the privilege of taking 2 custom pack trips led by Spencer Dominick into the wildernesses of Wyoming. Having been on a number of pack trips, I'm not exactly an easy sell. Spencer's trips far exceed anything I've done before, whether on my own or with other outfitters. 7D provides top notch mules and horses for riding and packing, taking great care to match them well to the riders. On this trip, we had 4 of us with a range of experience riding. Spencer, Mark and Ward kept everyone happy and safe while providing wonderful routes, leading us so that both the most experienced and least experienced riders all had a terrific time.
The care Spencer takes in developing menus tiered to the group far exceeds expectations. We're kind of a foodie bunch and were not disappointed, enjoying the best of dutch oven campfire cooking constructed with fresh herbs and ingredients.
While seemingly effortlessly doing all the work of backcountry packing and camping, these guys are simply a joy to be around - lots of fun, thoughtful, and patient. Such a pleasure. You can't do better than a 7D pack trip, truly. In the midst of COVID, this was the best possible vacation imaginable.
Can't wait for our next adventure on a 7D pack trip!

If you are looking for a guest ranch that offers a more personal experience and stunning views wherever you look, gourmet meals, safe ranch horses, plus a staff that goes above and beyond, then the 7D in Cody, WY is for you. This ranch is family owned and managed, and loved very much by the family. The management (family) feels the responsibility of good stewardship and it shows. We would definitely return.

I've travelled a lot domestically and internationally and just can't think of a vacation as relaxing and secluded as a week at the 7D, that's the reason why I just completed my third visit to the ranch. Once you make the drive on the spectacular Chief Joseph Highway and up the long gravel road to the ranch, you'll immediately feel the tension disappear in your shoulders, like you've entered a parallel universe. No, you don't need to be a cowboy or have any prior riding experience, just sit on the horses and they know what to do, thanks to guidance from the experienced wranglers. Internet is available but using it none or very little for the week is wonderful as is getting to know like minded travelers from around the country or maybe world.
Some more details: food excellent, accommodating to special dietary requests. generous portions without feeling like you stuff yourself silly or tons of food is wasted like on a cruise. The set up is very friendly to those who wish to observe COVID safety protocols, including a tent with propane heaters for crisp mornings. Other popular activities include hiking, fishing, Yellowstone excursions, or just chilling. Cabins are immaculately clean, it is not the Ritz, but it is way nicer than what you might stereotype for a remote ranch. August weather is gorgeous, cool crisp mornings, no humidity, and what little rain we had passed through very quickly.
Oh yeah there is no nickel and diming at the 7D, no resort fees, no charge for an extra pat of butter. The only extras I can think of: merchandise at the gift shop, a few refreshment items (but many refreshments are available 24x7 with no charge), a massage, and if you want to leave a bigger gratuity than what is already included, which you probably will because the young staff is excellent. BYOB which will save you a lot of money if you indulge-- the creek is a perfect refrigerator.
There's a reason practically everyone is a repeat visitor. . . .

7D Ranch provided us with a wonderful 4-day family pack trip experience that none of us will ever forget. Our guides, Spencer, Ward, and Perry were absolutely awesome throughout the whole trip. They took us to a perfectly beautiful location along Pilot Creek and gave us quite a good education on everything from the area wildlife & vegetation (huckleberries, whortleberries, wild raspberries, etc.) fly fishing, and the amazing animals (horses and mules) we relied upon throughout the experience. The campsite food they prepared for us daily was also superb as well as healthy! If I ever have the opportunity to take another pack trip I will definitely go through 7D for an even longer adventure.

This was our 8th year having a Grand Mother’s trip with her grandsons. We originally chose 7D because it was family run and family oriented.
The staff is well trained and very accommodating without being a nuisance. The wranglers know horses and after the information form is returned and they actually meet you it is rare that the horse they suggest is not perfect.
The rides are well managed and typically riders are ages 6 to 80. Rides vary depending on skill, experience and desire.
The meals are family style in the lodge except for one brunch on the trail. Being honest there is always more than enough food, the quality is excellent but the finished product is sometimes disappointing. Not enough to lower the overall rating from 5.

We researched the 7 D over eight years ago for a grandparent grandsons experience and trip. The first visit was wonderful and it has gotten better every year. The managers Mead and Andrea continue to maintain a family friendly atmosphere while providing something of special interest for everyone. The meals are served family style and the quality and variety is always great.
The staff is always friendly and courteous and helpful. Special attention to safety is maintained when riding, hiking and fishing.
The fact that this is a family owned and managed operation held and continues to hold special appeal for us. The boys loved the experience at 8 and 10 and seem to have loved it even more at 16 and 18. There is also evening entertainment and activities for all ages.

+1
I just returned from my third visit to the 7D ranch and it just keeps getting better. I traveled with 5 friends and we stayed in 2 of the warm, rustic cabins.
The ranch is in a wonderful spot called the Sunlight Basin, where you have views of the mountains during the day, and skies full of stars at night.
We took advantage of the amazing horseback riding each day, but the ranch also offers trap shooting, hiking and fly fishing if horses aren’t your thing. The riding trails are diverse and plentiful and the wranglers are top notch. We had the pleasure of having Leo as our wrangler and he (and his dog, Lizzie) took us on several rides that varied from relatively flat to high in the mountains.
The kitchen staff is also amazing. The meals are served family style and they can accommodate any dietary restrictions you may have. Special shout out to Emma, who baked some incredible desserts, including a creme brulee cookie that deserves an award!
In a nutshell, the Dominicks run a wonderful gem of a ranch. By the end of the week you feel like you are not just a guest, but part of the family. It’s a special place indeed….

I have become ever more enamored with the 7D Ranch on each of 3 visits over 35 years. The current and past Dominick family members who have managed the 7D Ranch have done so with a high level of professionalism, dedication, expertise, character and kindness. The architecture and construction of the log cabins and the main lodge authentically capture the appearance and feel of the west and a time gone by but with updated conveniences. The cabins are well decorated and include pot-belly stoves, with dry wood stocked for a cozy fire on crisp mornings. Meade and Andrea Dominick are expert not only in all areas of the Ranch operations but in all phases of outdoor life and activities in the stunningly beautiful Sunlight Basin and the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. The Ranch offers a large and well trained herd of horses who are individually selected for guests to match their riding ability. Other activities offered include hiking, fishing, trap shooting, lawn games, creative and engaging evening entertainment, and pack trips. The activities provided to younger children by loving counselors have proven to be so much fun that the children eagerly await each new day. Simply relaxing out of doors, in the Lodge and at the cabins, or walking grounds and visiting the animals are also good options. The quality of food and its preparation, taste, quantity and service by staff has been excellent. Options to avoid food allergies were superb. The staff members have been delightful, skilled at their duties, cross-trained for many tasks, and dedicated to care of their guests at the highest level. Perhaps most importantly, everyone involved with the Ranch, from the Dominick family members themselves to each staff member, from experienced "hand" to those newly hired, works as a seamless team to preserve the Ranch, its traditions, its culture and the land for generations to come as well as to honor generations past. By the end of the week, all guests and all staff likely will have melded to become extended "family". It can be difficult to leave the Ranch when that time has come .

We took our 3 active grandsons ( 12, 10 & 9) along with daughter and son-in-law. Definitely a family vacation. Almost everything was a first: horseback riding, fly fishing, trap shooting and being on a ranch and sleeping in cabins. We did it all and had a blast! Why, because the 7D knows how to create safe, fun, exciting things to do. The ownership and staff work hard behind the scenes to make it all work. They succeeded beyond my excpectations. It is a small group experience (~35) that allows you to get to know the other guests & their kids. Read their "Reviews". I loved sleeping with only the sceen door and being woken by the sound of birds each morning. The only sad part was saying goodbye - lots of hug, kisses and tears. Guess where the kids want to go next summer? And so do I.

The 7D has a website with great details of clothing and other items to bring. Always gone in August. It would get chilly enough to start fire at night to take chill out of the air.
Billings, Mt is about 2 hrs. from the ranch. Cody, Wy. is closer but flights into Cody are not as frequent and may require a longer layover then some like. I'd try Billings.
7D Ranch opens their season this summer on June 7. They typically only book a full week, Sunday to Sunday. If they are not fully booked for that week, they might consider less. Part of the reason they book for a whole week is their schedule. During the summer they have different things scheduled daily, with kids in mind, though they are flexible too. On Monday morning they do a horse riding orientation which is required by all new guests. If you can do the whole week, I highly recommend it! Much to do, and the unique views on each trail ride are not to be missed!
