Other than a hiccup with our bill, we had a wonderful time. We made reservations in August 2020, with our confirmation stating the lodging rate for our room was $179 per night. We stayed in July 2021. We were charged $185. I’m assuming the rate increased alter the first of the year. We were also charged for 2 beer draws and an appetizer at the bar area, which we did not order. I’m sure the Pepper Dip was excellent, but we never ordered or tried it. We were promptly refunded for those charges, which was very much appreciated. That being said, I rated this place 5 stars. The location was perfect, within walking distance to shops/restaurants/the beach & piers. The two breakfasts provided by Collin & Sara were amazing! The breakfast tacos are probably on my list of the top 5 (maybe even less) breakfasts I’be ever had—so delicious!! Roots Inn was very charming, with beautiful grounds in the back, and the history of the building is interesting. Collin & Sara were absolutely wonderful hosts. Would highly recommend!!

Collin and Sara were fantastic B & B hosts. The breakfast was wonderful each day and we enjoyed the rooftop patio. Plenty of room to social distance. They took a personal interest in us, took care of our bikes and made sure our needs were met. In spite of the COVID restrictions, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was very spacious and comfy. It was our anniversary/birthday week and they offered excellent recommendations on things to do and places to eat. They reached out via email several times leading up to our stay and even sent us a thank you email after we got back. This we our first time to Door County and when we go back we will make sure to stay at Roots. It is conveniently located in downtown Sister Bay near our favorite sandwich shop, The Creamery.

We had the rehearsal dinner the night before our son’s wedding at Sara & Collins “Kitchen/Inn”. It was an evening to remember. Sara & Collin worked with us, the parents of the groom to design a menu especially to meet the soon to be married couple’s tastes. The menu ranged from a uniquely flavored artichoke and roasted red peppers dip with locally baked focaccia to entrees and sides such as jerked chicken sliders and local grown pork brats with wonderfully flavored lemon Caesar salad, potato salad with charred sweet corn and roasted garlic and a pasta with dill and mint dressing.
Though their pub/outdoor deck was a snug squeeze for our group of 30, Sara, Collin and their team executed our drinks and dinner with warmth and style to perfection. Collin even curated both a craft beer selection and a thoughtful playlist to our honored guests complete satisfaction.
We will be back no doubt and recommend Roots to our friends and all of you happily.

I’ve visited Roots Inn and Kitchen several times now with a group of women and the place never disappoints! The food is meticulously crafted from farm fresh ingredients in very creative, gourmet preparations by the owners who are always on site to make sure everything’s up to their standards. The bar and restaurant have a great vibe and the outdoor dining space is both private and pleasantly arranged—a great spot to enjoy a drink or dine. Just can’t say enough about this place if you’re looking for a memorable experience at a special spot.

Amazing vegan friendly food menu, lovely tree top patio, tasty beer selections. The hardest part was deciding which delicious sounding food to try. They were very clear what was vegan, what had nuts, and were willing to modify to remove nuts/leave off non vegan selections based on allergies/dietary restrictions. Great little spot, can’t wait to go back.

We stayed in the Backpacker room for 2 nights. The room was tight but worked for 2 people. It was very well decorated and surprisingly comfortable. I understand the other rooms are bigger. Like most B&Bs the place is a little quirky, but this time only in the best ways. The location was about half a block from the main business district on a quiet street. There are several coffee shops, ice cream parlors, and restaurants nearby. The breakfasts, (especially on the first day), were excellent. We didn't try the food at other times. The B&B was very clean and the owners and staff were very friendly.

The upper Door County area in general had a positive vibe. They seemed to be cautious not to spread Covid using common sense. People respected each other's space and were courteous. I would definitely want to come back to the area and to the Root Inn & Kitchen.

My elderly (yet still somewhat nimble mom) and I stayed in the twins room recently. We felt like roommates in this quaintly decorated, dorm-size room! If I had a nickel for every time my understandably COVID-fearing mom said “ this place is spotless,” we’d easily have paid for the room! Our hosts were welcoming, friendly and attentive to every detail. We loved breakfast on the back deck!

The food here is absolutely incredible! We stayed in the study room and loved it. Walking distance to shops, coffee place and restaurants. They also catered to some dietary restrictions, which made for a perfect meal. Very friendly and accommodating owners. Highly recommend to couples looking for a relaxing stay in door county!

We needed a place to stay for just one night, a quick stop on the peninsula on our way to Washington Island. We try to support smaller, family owned businesses. We lucked out and we’re able to reserve a room at Roots Inn and Kitchen. The historic is quirky, interesting and comfortable. We were in the backpacker room. This room, while small is well appointed, perfect for our needs and would be a great base from which to explore the rest of the area. What made Roots a stand-out though was the scrumptious breakfast and welcoming conversation with one of the owners. This is why we choose smaller establishments, we love making a connection, listening to other people’s stories…and GREAT food. Anticipate both at Roots.

Thank you guys for such a great stay. By far the best B&B we’ve ever been to. Instead of feeling like most B&B’s, which are like staying at your great grandmothers house, it was very inviting and felt like a place we want to stay and hang out. The food was original and outstanding! Thanks for making our trip so unforgettable.

Answer from Collin D
Hi thanks for your inquiry! Our Inn was built in 1902 and is listed on the National Historic Register, so unfortunately the rooms are not to a size that could accommodate 2 queen beds in a room. However, if you are interested in a different experience, we do have a really neat Pioneer Log Cabin in Baileys Harbor that could work for you. If you wanted to check it out, visit our website and then click on the tab "Roots Pioneer Cabin." Thanks!
Answer from Collin D
Oh you are too kind! And yes, one of our main questions we ask our Inn guests when they book with us is whether they have any sort of food allergies or dietary restrictions! So, gluten free breakfasts is just one of several types of dietary accommodations we cook! Thanks again for your inquiry with us!

Are there gluten-free options available at the restaurant?
Answer from Collin D
Hi there! Thanks so much for your inquiry. Yes, we do have gluten-free options in both our Restaurant and Inn. As for the Restaurant, we do a small creative pub-style menu so there are only a handful of options available in general, but all are well received and almost all can be gluten free. For example, the gluten free options include: grilled hearts of romaine house caesar salad (w/o croutons of course), our Tin of House chips (think cut chips dressed in truffle oil, parmesan cheese, herbs), some excellent vegetarian Asian tacos (served on grilled corn tortilla to be GF), any of our specialty loaded organic bratwursts (skip the bun, as many have), and the Caribbean Jerk Sliders have been done GF by subbing the house coconut buns for the corn tortillas to put the flavors in a taco! Additionally we serve several GF ciders and hard seltzers for beverages. Thanks again and hope to see you! If you want, the menu can be found on our website (we can't post links on TripAdvisor), so just google search us, and when you get to our website, click the "Kitchen" tab on the main page, and when the new screen pops up, click on the circle picture below the "Menu" tab, and the PDF menu will pop up! Feel free to inquire about anything else! Thanks! Collin and Sara
