This place is a true gem. We stayed as a family of 4 with 2 young kids in a 2 BR cabin and it was a wonderful vacation. The cabins were clean and well-equipped. The beach and lake are gorgeous. They had plenty of activities to occupy our small kids. We are at the restaurant and it was delicious. You can’t beat their brandy old fashion!

Don’t go here expecting a 5 star Marriott accommodations. The service is friendly and on point, but the accommodations are dated. I grew up swimming in the pool and I’m pretty sure the pool area hasn’t been updated since the 80s. The mattresses were definitely older, but everything is sparkling clean and comfortable. The couch and chairs were clean and new.

Bring water. You don’t want to drink the tap water (This is true of the whole town-well water is full of iron). The restaurant and bars don’t open before 5 so bring food or plan a trip to town your first day there.

We rented a boat and it was also a more rustic experience, but for what it cost I’m not complaining. The beach area is shallow and perfect for young kids and sand castle building.

Our cabin was a bit further out, but still easy enough walk to the lodge/pool/playground. There was a great field in back for the kids to run around on and a much older playground area that is in questionable condition, but fine with no parent supervision. All in all a great 3 day vacation!

Stayed here for a weekend for son’s baseball tournament. Very vintage, up north feel and I loved it! Rooms are more spacious than your average hotel room. Linens and towels were clean. Very large, clean pool. Had a room for our families to gather and use when we ordered pizza. Breakfast was provided and was delicious. Guys went out ice fishing on the lake. Snowmobile trail goes right through the property and the parking lot has plenty of room to park trucks and snowmobile trailers. The only bummer is they do not provide housekeeping during your stay. I totally recommend this place and would come back again!

Third generation of family run resort. owners are involved, on-site and interacting/conversing with guests…even manning the grill on cookout night when the restaurant was closed and guests were invited to bring their own meat/beverage which would be cooked for them while the sides were provided by the resort. stayed in a Lodge room which was spacious and includes fridge, micro, coffee maker. clean room, hot shower. heated indoor pool, gift shop, tennis/pickleball facilities, lakeside cabins and restaurant (limited days open), breakfast cafe and gift shop. Northwoods rustic which is what you expect this far North and why you go there.

made reservations for a getaway weekend with my wife a week before our trip on Travelocity, received a confirmation from Travelocity immediately. when we arrived at resort they claimed they did not have a reservation for us! the king/whirlpool suite we reserved was occupied! the girl at the check in offered us a different room{2 queen beds) for the first night and said she would talk to manager to see what was available for the second night. Never heard back from her or manager! stopped at front desk again at checkout to give them an opportunity to make it right, but they offered no explanation for mix up and claimed to offer a discount on the room we ended up with which was higher than I could have booked that room online when I made original res. not good customer service!

We recently stayed here, four years after our first stay here. Back four years ago I wrote a review about how dirty it was and the management apologized and said this wasn’t their norm. Well, fast forward to now and a second chance, and I can say nothing has changed. What’s the saying?? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice… For a bunch of fishing guys this might be a great place, but for a family with little kids, it is not great. The cabin was filthy. The bedding was clean and presentable but the cleanliness of the walls, windows and floors were terrible. We had to re-clean the cabin in order to stay there. Our little one was found eating some candy (which we did not bring) and we found a bunch of old candy pieces under the bed with about five years of filth and dirt that had never been vacuumed. The knotty pine walls were so full of webs and dust, it appeared they had never been vacuumed or washed down. The tops of outlet boxes and light switches were covered in dirt and dust. Not a single window worked, and some of the screens just fell out of the windows, other windows that tilted in, had broken hardware and just fell in towards the floor, making for a dangerous situation for a toddler. Curtains were ripped and had holes and the heavy drapes over the big windows (which were covered in fingerprints from the previous guests), were black and needed a good washing. For over $300/night we expected more. Upon checkout, no one ever asked how was our stay? It did not appear anyone really cared if things went well or not. This resort may have been something back in the day but it is long overdue for a good, deep cleaning and major repairs. As an avid northwoods vacationer for over 20 years, I have experienced cabin living many times. I know the difference between northwoods sand and pine needles and filth. This was filth.

We stayed at rhe resort overnight while we were in town for the softball tournament at the Hodag dome. We enjoyed the northwoods feel of the facility but were franky disgusted with the cleanliness of the room. While we understand the atmosphere of the lodge is definitely "up north" and "rural", that doesnt excuse a lack of cleanliness.

We stayed in room 106. When my daughter pulled out the sleeper sofa she found the matress full of stains.   She refused to sleep on it so I, a full grown adult that didnt fit, spent the night on the love seat.

The thermostat was also terrible. If we'd set the temperature to 73 it didnt take long for the room to drop to the upper 60s. We had to fiddle with it all night to try and keep "comfortable".

The fabric covered chairs were also badly stained and not something I'd allow a guest in my house to sit on.

Again, we really do understand the quaint style of the resort, but our room was just gross.

My family and I have been staying in a cabin at the Holiday Acres Resort for many years in a row. We began when my son was just a toddler, and now he is 25 years old. This resort has everything! Cabins, hotel rooms, access to Lake Thompson with many piers, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, an indoor pool, a restaurant, horseback riding (up the road) at Holiday Stables, and much much more. Everyone is very nice and the owner, Kim, is the best. We will not go anywhere else when we are up in that area. Oh, and the price is right on par with other resorts in the area. Go ahead and book a stay. You will love it! I promise.

We visited in early June, we stayed in the lodge. It was dog friendly. Enjoyed relaxing on the lawn, watching the sunset. Our family members rented a cabin which was very cute, had a nice fire ring available. The gift shop has lots of choices. We loved the restaurant, highly recommend an Old Fashioned from here.

This was our 3rd family vacation at Holiday Acres and again it did not disappoint. The cottages remind me of my grandparents cottage when I was a child, rustic but you fill it with family and fun. The restaurant was excellent and our server Emily was the best, be sure to ask for her when you dine. Luke is a great bartender and entertainer, we also enjoyed spending time at the bar with Karen. We reserved 3 cabins (20-21-22) for our family. Our time was so enjoyable that we booked again for next year. Loved the Tuesday night cookout with other guest. Very safe place to let your kids and grandkids to swim and explore. Many thanks to Kim and his staff for a great vacation

I stayed here in September for 2 nights over a weekend for a wedding in the area. My family was in the Lodge in a room with 2 queens. Walking in a side door to find my room I was unimpressed with the drab walls, old carpet and lack of decor in the hallways. Walking into the room my first impression continued. In a nutshell - everything is just old. The comforters are the thin, synthetic variety that perfectly match the drapes. The art on the walls made me laugh a bit because they had Smokey the Bear featured. The tub was quite brown so my sister bought a Magic Eraser at the store and cleaned it before the next morning. The brown came right off, leading me to question the quality of cleaning occurring regularly. The towels were ok and the sheets/pillows were fine and seemed clean. I was wishing I had slippers to wear around since the carpet had some stains.

On the plus side, the room was large. We forgot to pack swimsuits or we would have tried out the indoor pool, which looked nice. There's a bar and a restaurant and a banquet hall (there was a wedding reception there one night). There's also a game room where there's a coffee shop that's open "seasonally"; I guess we were there in the wrong season. And in a town with maybe 1-2 latte bars this would have been welcomed. Maybe they don't get as many visitors in the fall and winter, but they have snowshoeing listed as an activity...

I can imagine this place when it was newer and I love the idea of a family summer camp. But it needs lots of sprucing. Even just fresh paint would brighten the place up. It also has old-school keys instead of key cards, but there was an additional deadbolt on the inside of the door.

The area's option are very limited and I don't know that there's anything over a 3 star. I would maybe stay here again when I'm back in the area if it was summer. Even in September, though, (their alleged off-season) the prices were not as cheap as you might think they should be. Maybe there's a supply/demand element to it.

Response from hodag, Owner at Holiday Acres Resort
Responded Nov 28, 2014
Dear Dobie Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. As a family owned and operated independent resort, we take pride in our business, and care very much that our guests have a great experience. Observations and suggestions from our guests are valuable to us and we listen carefully to them. Cleanliness is a top priority, and we apologize for what was not as WE expect it to be. Maintenance and upkeep are ongoing, and seeing things from guest perspective is what helps us with planning and staff training. We are happy to hear that you would stay at Holiday Acres if you return our area. Our Northwoods location is a seasonal area, and summer and fall are the busiest, as you surmised. We would love to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Holiday Acres on Lake Thompson in the summer, or anytime. Sincerely, Kari Zambon

Can you rent a boat there and if you have oe is all size moters allowed?
Answer from karizmbn
Rhinelander28 contributions7 helpful votes
Thanks for your question, icgirl23. We have rowboats, and 6HP outboard motors, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats and pontoon boats for rental to our guests. If you stay in a cottage or vacation home, a rowboat comes with the unit at no extra charge. There are not size limits on motors, but of course our lake is about 400 acres in size, so common sense and the laws that pertain to boating all apply. Hope to see you soon.

Can you put a tent up at the cabins that are rented
Answer from karizmbn
Rhinelander28 contributions7 helpful votes
Thanks for your question. Cottage charges are based on the size of the cottage and number of occupants. Setting up a canopy is fine with us. Some people have put up small pup tents for their children to use. These children were paid occupants of the cottage. For regular camping, we suggest people go to our West Bay Camping Resort on Lake Thompson. West Bay is two minutes away from Holiday Acres. Hope you can visit us soon!
