Hotel's Favorite
We spent one night here and found the hotel to be charming. We had been staying at Hiltons for the past 5 nights and the River District topped them all.
The staff was genuinely friendly and helpful. The room was simple, clean and very functional. The water pressure in the shower was fantastic.
They provided a cheese and cracker happy hour in the lobby along with ice cream later after dinner in their charming lobby area.
The home made breakfast was part of the package and was perfect. The ladies making the personalized options were so friendly and aimed too please.

This hotel is a great base to explore the region. Friendly quick check in, comfortable clean rooms, the breakfast is served on real china and metal utensils, with cooked to order breakfast as part of the package is you want an omelet. Nice pool and hot tub. There was cheese and crackers to sample when we came in, after dinner atwe came back for the complementary ice cream, hot cookies and milk. 10 minutes from hiking at Effigy Mounds National Monument, Pikes Peak State Park and Wyalusing State Park and 5 minutes from local historic sites in Prairie du Chien. Thought it was great value.

We had family staying at a different hotel in Prairie du Chien and were so grateful that we booked a room at the River District Hotel. The hotel was spotless and the staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly. The soup and pie were an excellent touch and much better than we were expecting. Everyone is raving about Darla the omelet chef, and they're not wrong. Darla is a national treasure. It was a very comfortable environment and we are looking for a reason to visit again.

When I checked in, I was impressed with the quality of the bed, pillows, soaps etc. They had a hot pot of soup in the lobby, as well as apple and cherry pie. By the back door, there were towels (torn into pieces) for bikers to wipe the dew or rain off their motorcycles. The breakfast was way better than the normal "continental breakfast" that is standard at most hotels. There was a professional cook preparing custom egg dishes, omelets, scrambled and I think even soft boiled. They had banana bread, muffins, cold cereal, biscuits & gravy and sausage. Very nice spread! the next evening there was different food in the lobby as well as vanilla and chocolate ice cream. I really felt "at home". Then a friend mentioned the massage chair in the "work out room" so of course I had to try it, and it was also very relaxing! They had games to play, puzzles, and other nice little touches that made this hotel "stand out". I would definitely stay here again!

I did not get the type of room I reserved. Worker at desk seemed annoyed with me when I didn’t just take the incorrect room because they “were booked” and “someone messed up”. I was then given a downgraded room that had some of the amenities that my original room was supposed to have, with no offer to refund the different in room cost. I also got the date night romance package and the room did not have the items it stated that it would. Very sloppy. Will not stay again.

Response from Chris Meyer, General Manager at River District Hotel
Responded Sep 10, 2020
I have tried to contact you by phone, but unfortunately the number you provided when you made your reservation online is not a valid phone number. I do hope you received my email last week. When a reservation is booked online, that is a direct booking that doesn't involve the front desk. the reservation that you made online came through for the two room Leisure Suite. This room doesn't have the features of the Luxury Suite, which when you made the reservation, the Luxury Suite was not available. I'm also sorry you felt the front desk agent was not sympathetic to your request for the specific room. We really try to make our guest stay extra special while staying with us! She tried her best to accommodate you at check in but had few options by this time. I understand your disappointment and wish we would have had the Luxury Suite available. If you would like to call the hotel direct, I would like to visit with you. We really do care!! Chris General Manager River District Hotel Prairie du Chien, WI

7 of us stayed here during our 300-mile bike trip along the Mississippi. Starting with boxes of “Clean bike rags” and “Dirty biker rags” we could use right in the entryway, then lovely convenient rooms, then a great pool and hot tub, then great snacks (cheese and crackers 5-7 pm and cookies and ice cream 7-9), then fantastic breakfast—we were wowed! Breakfast included omelette or eggs cooked to order along with great fresh muffins, fruit, cereal, and other baked goods. The staff was very accommodating. Overall just a great experience!

What a great stay! We arrived and were professionally greeted and welcomed to this independently owned hotel! Check in was quick and smooth! Our room was very clean and there were no issues with anything in the room. The decor is nice and included a large chair. The bed was very comfortable too! The bonus to staying at this hotel includes that they go the extra mile by offering cheese and crackers from 3 pm until 5 and then offering cookies and ice cream later in the evening. How nice is that! They have a nice lounge area that includes a big puzzle if you want to work on that for a bit, comfy furniture and a large TV. The breakfast is one of the best I’ve had featuring hot items like biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausage, and cheesy potatoes. They have lots of cold choices that included the expected and also upscale muffins, jello, and strawberry shortcake. You even eat on real plates and use cloth napkins and they have mugs if you don’t want to use a paper cup…so nice! Every staff member we met was friendly and efficient! I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about location. The hotel is right off the downtown. Simple to walk to restaurants, bars and shops! They are biker friendly too! They have a rag bucket right by the door. We will be back the next time we ride the Great River Road!

My husband, teen grandson and I stayed for 2 nights at the River District Hotel in Prairie du Chien, WI in July. The hotel is very nice, updated and quiet. The rooms are spacious (we stayed in a double queen room). The room had a microwave, large t.v., desk, nice sized fridge. The decor of the room is fresh and clean. The bathroom is updated too with the tub/shower and toilet in one room and outside is the sink with large counter making it great for more than one person to get ready at a time. The room has a nice sized air conditioner which kept us cool even though the outside temps were in the 90's. The rooms themselves are quite insulated and we never heard anyone above us or next to us, or even in the halls.
In the morning Chef Darla prepared a wonderful breakfast with homemade omelets made to order, pancakes, and french toast. There was biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, cheesy potatoes, jello, breads, muffins, cereal, fresh juice and coffee and some fresh fruits. There is a dining room off to the side, or we could eat in the lobby area where there are more tables.
The front lobby is inviting and well lit. There are a number of comfortable chairs and a gas fire place for chilly nights. They had a large scrabble board and puzzles. There is a pool area and a small workout room.
There is ample parking in a well lit parking area and seating outside to relax in. They are motorcycle friendly with towels for bikers and a boot shiner located in the front lobby.
There was a laundry area on the first floor.
The staff was very friendly and attentive.
The hotel itself is located within walking distance of the downtown area (specialty shops and nightlife) as well as the historic St Feriole Island Park for walks by the Mississippi River, fishing, and eagle watching.
It is located right by the bridge that crosses over the river into Iowa where there are antique shops, specialty shops and a gambling boat.
Our stay was comfortable and enjoyable, affordable and we look forward to returning next year.

In May the pool was not open. They are deep cleaning each room after a stay , to the point that the room goes unused for 24 hours. We talked to some of the staff and they took it very seriously.
Yes and super tidy rooms. Nicest rooms I have been in for years.
This hotel is not pet friendly,
Sure, we even have camels that have private rooms.
Yes they do - We asked for a handicapped room. My husband has had both a knee and hip replacement it is so much easier for him to use a walk in shower also. Plus they had a ground floor room so no stairs to climb...Thank you for asking.
