We stayed here when passing through Prairie du Chien because of its high reviews. I was quite disappointed with the accommodations and lack of virus precautions. The hotel is in a good location, situated near a few restaurants. We noticed a decline almost immediately upon checking in. The front desk agent was not wearing a mask (required in this state). We asked for a discount or upgrade and she said there weren’t any without even looking— the hotel was nearly empty that night. She didn’t mention the hotel’s amenities at all. Although a few guests wore masks, most did not. We stayed in room 206, a standard room with two queen beds. I found the room to be clean and well-appointed. It had a relatively modern feel. Unfortunately, the positives end there. The internet was down that night, and the mini-fridge didn’t work. The air conditioning unit was coming off the wall, and when it shut off it sounded like a huge crash happened in the room. We mentioned the issues to the front desk agent that night. She said that the internet outage wasn’t her fault and there wasn’t anything that she could do. We were told to go to a nearby restaurant if we needed it. As for the refrigerator, she said that she would tell the maintenance person, leaving us without a fridge that night. In the morning, we received a small discount. On a positive note, the breakfast was exceptional. Chef Darla was incredibly friendly and passionate and brightened our morning, even after such a rough night’s sleep. I was blown away by the selection. Most hotels are now serving just a grab bag, but the River District served omelets, hash browns, eggs prepared in any way, hash browns, homemade sausage (like kielbasa!), fruits, two types of breads, three cereals, and even carrot cake bites. All food tasted great. This was a huge positive. As for other amenities, this property has a pool and self-serve laundry. The nightly cookies and ice cream is available upon request. This was not stated anywhere, both onsite and on the website. We found in the guestbook that each guest received a Wisconsin cheese snack at check-in, but this wasn’t the case. The front desk agent in the morning was friendly and apologetic, unlike the woman in the evening. She was also wearing a mask and gloves. Though the breakfast was fantastic and the room was clean, the problems we encountered here would prevent me from returning. I’ve stayed in hotels that were much lower-end than this one (and had much worse reviews) that delivered a much better experience.

This place is very well managed: spotlessly clean, up to date, comfortable, and the staff are terrific. The hot breakfast is terrific as well, lots of choices, and prepared by one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Location is great, very walkable area.

Wow this place is GREAT!! For starters the staff is awesome. They treat you like family. My family and I felt like we had gone to a relatives house, like the ladies there were like our aunts! Chris the manager is so awesome and makes you feel right at home. They are very friendly and warm and attentive to all your needs. Each morning they have chef Darla making a great breakfast. She’s quick and fun and makes breakfast really fun. In the evening you get treated to ice cream, fresh cookies and milk! Who does that in a hotel? The rooms were really nice, clean and comfortable. The beds were awesome! I’ve never slept better in a hotel than here. Our room had a massage chair which I used every day I was there. Really a nice add on! Overall a great hotel and great staff! I would give this hotel more stars if I were able to. This is the must stay place in Prairie Du Chien. Don’t look anywhere else. Book with River District Hotel! They are legit and awesome!
