This is a large and beautiful property the services of which go beyond the hotel grounds. The location is a bit of a journey from the LIB airport but it is worth the time for the kind of experience you get on this side of Guanacaste. The people who work at Punta Islita are kind and accommodating, remembering not just your name but personal preferences. The hotel experience also offers a wide range of activities on and off the resort grounds in the nearby town where you get to see authentic Costa Rican culture, eat the food, and be one with nature. I stayed in one of the newest suits with a swim-up and a view don't the ocean, perhaps the best room I've ever got to stay in over my many years of travel. There are two on-site restaurants (one is on the beach) both of which have delicious yet healthy menu options with all food sourced or grown as close as possible to their kitchen. I even learned how to make one of the dishes! The spa has a range of services that follow traditional practices, the chocolate scrub is a must. It was a relaxing yet exciting stay all around.

Hotel's Favorite
What a magical place! Hotel Punta Islita is one of the few self-named "eco resorts" that, as far as I could tell, truly lives up to its description. It's clear that Hotel Punta Islita's emphasis on valuing the natural environment is a guiding force for them and not a hollow marketing tagline. From what I saw at every turn, the animals (including the humans!) who call this area home are treated with the utmost respect. ~Getting there + accessibility concerns~ True, the road getting here is full of literal twists, turns, and bumps. (We had more than one instance of car sickness in our party of four, probably because by the time we got on the road to Islita we had been on twisty roads of varying altitudes for 2 hours.) But, after finishing our drive up the rocky road that marked the end of the journey, coming upon the stunning views and gorgeous layout of Hotel Punta Islita was like discovering gold at the end of a rainbow, to be cliché. We rented a car, reasoning that we'd want one on hand in order to do a little trip to Sámara or to other nearby locales. We weren't expecting to fall in love with the hotel and not want to leave at all. So, in retrospect, we should've just gotten the hotel's shuttle service and saved money. Oh well. (If I go back again and stay longer than 6 nights, I'll want a car, though--but if you're only there a week or less, you may just want to enjoy what the hotel offers, meaning you won't need your own car. Considering the high cost of rental cars as of now (mid-2022), it's possible that, in the future, renting a car will be more economical than the shuttle. As noted in other reviews (and on the hotel's website and communications), this resort is NOT accessible for those with mobility issues. Even if you use the complimentary shuttle to get from one place to another, you will encounter stairs, uneven ground, walkways without railings, etc. I applaud the hotel for being so clear about this upfront, as I have loved ones with mobility issues and have more than once ended up at a hotel that claimed to be accessible but was not. I read that golf carts were available to rent, which would make it even easier to get around without relying on the shuttle, but I didn't check prices or availability. I expected to be more easily exhausted going up and down the hillside, but I survived! If you take the walking path (and not the road as we did the first couple of days) from the rooms/villas to the reception/restaurant, there are water stations next to lovely swings where you can enjoy the view and catch your breath. ~Excellent service from every person we interacted with (every single one, really!)~ So many folks deserve a shout-out, and I wish I had written every person's name down. However, at risk of forgetting someone's name, I'll mention the many I *do* remember. Marvin welcomed us and made sure we knew he was available should we have any questions or concerns, no matter how small. He was going to be off during our last full day, but he gave me a heads-up in advance so that he could personally take care of anything we needed before he would be unavailable. ~Bars & restaurants~ The bartenders/servers were so welcoming to us, humoring me kindly as I tried to stick to my faltering Spanish whenever possible. Everyone we interacted with spoke English well, so my non-Spanish-speaking travel buddies were totally fine when I wasn't around to make my attempts at translation. Kervin's cocktail class (included with the package we bought) was a delight. At the beach, it was so relaxing to know we could sit at the swim-up bar or relax on our lounge chairs and get excellent service either way. My friends and I are strong "local first" supporters and appreciated how thoroughly Joe walked us through how they acquire ingredients for their menus and how the chef develops the dishes. (The breakfast menu was out of this world, but I wasn't a big fan of the dinner options. That said, my friends all loved dinner most nights, so I was the odd man out with this opinion.) I am so sorry for not having written down all the names. Felipe, Minor, Briner, and everyone else who waited on our crew of 4 tall ladies: thank you! ~Spa treatments~ Highly recommend getting body work from Lisette (sp?) and her team at the beachside, open-air spa setup. I didn't go to the main spa, but my friends did and loved both the main spa and the beach one. Wendy was my massage therapist; I cashed in on a $1/minute Sunday special and got a massage along with a facial for sensitive skin. It was the most relaxed I've been in weeks. ~Classes/planned activities~ Be sure to cash in on the classes and activities offered--the free ones are just as good as the ones you pay for. The tortilla-making class with Aurora was a delight, plus it gave us an extra reason to explore the little village of Punta Islita, which is a short walk from the Hotel Punta Islita beach area. The villa/lodging It's hard to imagine that our villa wasn't the nicest place to stay on property, but I heard other guests talking about how much they loved their rooms and villas, too. I love when everyone feels as if they're in the best situation for themselves! :) We stayed in Corteza and it was nicer than I had even hoped. The place was spacious, with huge living room sliding glass doors that allowed you to make the home open-air if you wished. (That said, individual AC units were in the living room/kitchen as well as each bedroom--just be sure to turn them off when you leave, and if you have them on in just one room, close the door so that energy use is more efficient.) To my surprise, the small infinity plunge pool was a delight and we spent lots of time in it. (I figured it would be too small to really enjoy--I was wrong. It was so refreshing!) More than once we spent time watching the white-faced monkeys in the trees adjacent to our deck. Iguanas (adult and baby), coatís, leafcutter ants, parrots, macaws, jays, and the aforementioned white-faced capuchin monkeys all made appearances. And we of course heard many more animals (including howler monkeys!) that we didn't end up catching a glimpse of. (Tip for those staying in a villa: the secret tiki bar at Corteza is a hidden gem. The only drawback? Mosquitoes love it, too--be sure to slather yourself in bug spray first--the hardcore kind, not the "all natural" kind that I used with zero effect!) ~Overall~ I'm ready to go back. Like, today. Excellent service, beautiful views at every turn, myriad and varied class/learning opportunities, well thought-out menus, and so much more. I am ready to go back!

Our family of four had an amazing 5 night stay in late July at Punta Islita. Our kids are 6 & 8 so we signed up for several activities through the hotel and all where awesome. The staff was fantastic, knew my kids names by second day. We stayed in a 3 bedroom villa which came with a golf cart. I could see where if you didn't have a golf cart you would need to be prepared for a long walk to beach club or take free shuttle. The main area for breakfast & dinner had great service and food, we ate there 4 out of 5 days. Went into town another day, but frankly the hotel had different specials each day so we never got bored and food quality was great. Lastly, I have been traveling for 20+ years, have lifetime status on multiple airlines, Marriott, etc. This property to me stood out due to the unique setting all by itself in a forest on a mountain with its own beach. Its just very different from your typical "beach vacation " or even from the JW, W, Four Seasons, etc that are closer to LIR airport & are more standard high end beach resorts. All these places are great as I have been to them, this one is just way different in a good way. Note it was families and couples during our July stay, maybe a bit more families since its summer. Would definitely go back.

I just enjoyed a two night stay at Punta Islita with a small group of friends and it was absolutely fantastic! Our room was perfectly outfitted, comfortable and quiet and the views are incredible, This area of Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful as it's a bit 'remote' and pristine with lush hills. The real stars of the hotel are the the staff. The service was outstanding, from check in to check out. Waitstaff are attentive and friendly. And the FOOD! The food was excellent and inventive. The guacamole (with a hint of curry, I think?) was a must have at each meal. The Chef's inclusion of authentic Costa Rican flavors and techniques into high end dishes is brilliant. I highly recommend Punta Islita for those looking to enjoy nature and culture in a slightly off-the-beaten-path location.

I cannot say enough great things about this hotel. We just spent a week there, and the service was outstanding. Also, the food here is probably be best we've ever had at any hotel anywhere. The menus are not your typical burgers and fries. Everything is very "Top Chef" and out of the ordinary. We had an ocean view room, and the views are spectacular! The hotel is on the mountainside, and it's a quick walk or ride down to the beach part of the property where they have a 2nd pool, restaurant, bar and private beach area. The town is Islita is right there and there are 2 local restaurants. You will want a rental car as it is probably less than getting th 2.5 hour shuttle from the airport, and you'll want a car to do some of your own excursions. There aren't too many interesting places in this area of Costa Rica, but about 15-20 minutes away is Playa Carillo which was our favorite beach in the area. Right off the main road, so easy to get to. There are tons of other more private beaches in the area, and they all felt very safe. Samara is the nearest larger town, but it's mostly a touristy beach town, and the beach was not very good compared with the less-crowded ones. If you have the opportunity, do the sunset picnic that the hotel offers. It's one of the most spectacular views I've ever seen anywhere!

We came for our family trip (11 people with our 94-yr old Grandpa!) here and we had the great fun and experience. The rooms are big with each room an outdoor hammock, a terrace overlooking the mountains AND a plunge pool. The pool is perfect for dipping and feeling fresh after a day of outdoor activities. Marvin, the hotel manager was very helpful and accommodated our needs (even recommending restaurants beyond the hotel’s). The staff are sweet, respectful and professional.

First of all the views. I could sit there and stare at the views for days! The restaurant food was great and they do offer a special every night in case you get bored of the menu. Staff was very friendly and very accommodating. All the activities/tours are no more than 5 minutes from the hotel. This made it so easy and convenient. We did a lot. Monkey tour, horseback riding, zip lining, a hike, a massage, surf lessons and there is more to do. Tour guides are very friendly and fun. Shout out to Narron, our guide for 3 of our activities. We stayed in a one bedroom villa with a plunge pool. I would recommend a room with a plunge pool or hot tub just for the views! There are two pools on property one by the main lobby/restaurant on top of the mountain and one by the beach at the bottom of the mountain (a restaurant for lunch at the bottom). Lots of stairs and hills, so if you are not a walker get a room near the hotel lobby/restaurant and take the shuttle down. We are walkers and enjoyed our daily hikes. The place is very remote and the last 30min is a dirt/gravel road, so rent a car with 4x4 or arrange for the hotel shuttle to pick you up. Liberia airport is much closer at 2 1/2 hours away. We came at the begging of rainy season (end of May). It was nice during the days and we got some rain at night. So get up early this time of year and enjoy it! We did! The best part about this time of year was not a lot of people. I would come back here in a heartbeat! I didn’t want to leave! On a side note, Two local restaurants near the hotel. Kimbute and Don Ramiro’s. Need reservations for Don Ramiro’s as he prepares meals depending on your taste and how many people are coming.

black widow spiders poo floating in your toilet and sink water that fills up so quick you can’t spit ! The place is infested with insects . I mean we are in the jungle but your housing space should be properly protected . The toilets don’t flush so your poo will be floating in the toilet for hours until you call someone to fix it but it never fixes so you have someone clean up your poo everyday . Also there’s no food here every night they are sold out of dinner. So I’ve been more so on a weight loss retreat rather than a honeymoon.

My family and I just spent a week at Punta Islita and will be dreaming about our stay for a long time to come. Photos do not do this glorious spot justice, and the professional and welcoming staff really made our stay a joy. Hotel Punta Islita is situated on and around a hill from which there's an incredible vista of the ocean and tropical forest. There are mango and other fruit trees galore, which meant tons of wildlife, including monkeys, macaws, coatis, and iguanas. It's a bit off the beaten path, which was one of the reasons we chose it, and I'm so glad we did. We stayed in a two-bedroom villa, which came with three full bathrooms, a kitchen, and a private plunge pool. There's also a beautiful infinity pool by the restaurant and another pool at the beach area; both have swim-up bars. We took advantage of a number of the activities offered on site, including kayaking the mangrove swamp (our favorite), horseback riding, a dusk wildlife hike, tennis, and a monkey-sighting expedition. (There was a charge for some activities, and others were free.) I think they must have moved the gym since some of the previous reviews; it's now down by the golf course and had quite a bit of equipment. My brother used it several times and enjoyed it. Though it's possible to rent a golf cart to get around, I think, we explored the property on foot. Expect some stairs and a 10-minute walk through the mango grove (full of ripe, delicious mangos when we visited) to get to the beach area, where there's a second restaurant, cabanas for rent, and other complimentary beach seating. The villas and some of the rooms also entail a walk up stairs to the restaurant/infinity pool area, though there are sweet places to pause and water stations along the way. We had dinner at the restaurant one night and didn't love it. Breakfasts, however, were terrific, with fresh juice, fruit, and a variety of dishes to choose from. I would recommend Hotel Punta Islita for couples or families looking for a peaceful refuge away from the hustle and bustle of tourist towns. If you're looking for clubs, crowds, and lots of shops and restaurants nearby, this is not the place for you. (There is a small town close by with a few restaurants and shops. We had a few fun and tasty meals at Kimbute. Make reservations if you want to go to Don Ramiro--we didn't and were sad to miss out on trying it.) If you're looking for a unique and restorative destination where you'll be surrounded by nature and wake up to the sounds of waves, howler monkeys, and macaws, you're really going to enjoy your stay.
