This place was a huge disappointment. It is a 2 or 3 star place. It is 40 to 50 years old and looks It. The rooms are outdated. The restaurant food was good but no variety and after 2 days you ran out of options. The resort is in the hills. A beautiful view from the dining area. To get to the beach was a shuttle in a 20 year old Mercedes van. The beach is nice but not of guanacasta is nicer. The road to the resort is 30 minutes of unpaved, rough graded dirt which would be virtually impassable in the rainy season. That is after a 1 and 1/2 hour drive from the airport. As a 2 star at $200 per nite it would be acceptable. For the same price we could stay in any Marriott property for which there is no comparison. Sorry to be so negative but thus place is waaaay past its prime.

We had a five-day family stay here. Despite a few issues, I’d give it a solid five stars and my family rated it as their best stay anywhere, ever. The few issues are some of the rooms need a refurb. We didn’t see anything terrible, just a few things showing their age and worn from heavy use. The gym equipment needs some servicing too. I’d prefer if the shuttle were provided by an EV. On the plus side the location is sensational. Very remote, very well integrated into the environment, macaws are regular visitors, as our howler monkeys. A great beach, with another pool, snack bar and beach bar, are ready for you. There’s plenty of activities if swimming up to the bar looses its appeal, many of them free. I’d recommend the one-to-one art class. If you can book/buy a villa, many of these are much better than the hotel rooms. Cash upgrades can be negotiated after booking a room if you are lucky. Cleaning and safety standards were consistently very high. Super staff everywhere. This is what makes the difference. Lovely, lovely people.

Pros: - beach is great - especially for surfing and swimming. - pools are awesome. - wildlife is great Cons - not enough staff - hard to get a drink or get anything done - shuttle buses to beach are awful and falling apart, you can also end up waiting 20-30 minutes for a shuttle to the beach… - menu for food is limited, with very few vegetarian options - rooms dated / dirty - we had loads of dead flies and spiders (pretty grim) - gym : terrible, only machine that worked properly was one treadmill, bike seat kept falling off, cross trainer was rusty, bench falling apart. If you’re looking for a nice hotel, the other Marriott hotel “el mangrove” is much better.

Stayed 3 nights at this hotel, we reserved 2 casitas (one for me and my husband, one for our teenage boys). Starting with the positives: The property itself is amazing. As is clear from their website, they are located on a hilly area on an acreage and also own a beachfront “club” on the water where they have beach access, cabanas, a pool, and a beach restaurant and bar. The view from our casita was stunning and included the ocean/beach. There’s a nice hammock, patio and splash pool that you can enjoy while soaking in the view, especially at sunset. It was very quiet outside with few sounds aside from nature. We liked the beach club and rented cabanas the 2 days we were there which gave us a nice space to hang out on the beach. The cove that the beach is on is pretty and the beach itself was solid. Nice sand and not crowded, I counted only about 3 dozen people during the peak of the afternoon. The water was warm and there were some waves but all very gentle and not scary. We also really enjoyed having dinner down at the beach club 2 nights. It was fun being able to eat outside on the beach. We also had a great dinner up at the hotel restaurant. The food was excellent and it was again a very nice venue, with overlooks to the beach and pool area. A final positive would be a shout-out to Ronald on their staff. He does a lot of the tours, and we had him for the monkey tour, the bird-watching tour and the dusk hike. He was super knowledgeable and found a ton of creatures for us to look at. I mean some of them, I have no clue how he was able to see them. And he knows a ton about the nature in the area. So he made those excursions fun. For negatives, I will start with the casitas. The website mentions “rustic”, I would say outdated is more accurate. To me the most disappointing aspect was the bathroom, which was a closet-like space that included the toilet and shower. The toilet looked original to the 1990s construction. The shower itself looked like the tiles were new, but they leaked water onto the floor. There are dispensers for shampoo and conditioner, you have to press them for dispensing and it’s almost impossible not to also disconnect the bottom part of the device which comes out. In the end, we could not get our conditioner dispenser to click back in place. There is a separate vanity, which is good, but the size is not large. Finally, I would say that the layout of the room is not super functional. There are 2 sort of shelves or benches built into the room that separate the living area from the bedroom area. Which are strange and kind of in the way. Our king-sized bed did not fit well into the bedroom space, with the side of the bed closest to the bathroom being less than 2 feet from the wall. Another slight negative was the breakfast service up at the restaurant. In our case, breakfast was included in our package. The wait staff was pleasant, but every morning there were things we had to ask multiple times for. To get our juice, to get coffee refilled, to just to check on our order placed over half an hour ago (and no fruit or bread had showed up in the meantime). This was an annoyance. And as a final comment and FYI, the road to the hotel is a dirt road for the final 1/2 hour of the ride there. This was only a minor annoyance in our case, but on our way out the driver mentioned that if there’s a hard rain that the road can become impassable. I hate to think about what the plan B would be in that situation. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend as long as the negatives are known in advance and seen as workable.

Ended up booking with points after a mess-up at the start of our vacation, and are we glad we found this place! It was a 2 hour drive from Tamarindo, and the last half hour is all dirt road, very hilly and very bumpy, but gives you a sense of the remoteness of the place. Then when you arrive, you go through a big set of gates and into an amazing resort. Most of the villas are separate, with great views and very private, You can dial the hotel shuttle to take you down to the beach (where they have a "beach club" - pool, pool bar and restaurant, and plenty of grass and beach to hang out on). We had an 18 month old so didn't hang at the infinity pool (and only ate dinner once at the restaurant) but it looked amazing. Did a trip to the top of the mountain at sunset which was a great . Really enjoyed our stay here - the staff were super friendly and gave our little daughter plenty of attention! Marvin was a huge help from the start and throughout, and will definitely be back to stay!
