We went there since it was on our Golf course bucket list but ended being very disappointed. We played the River course on day one and that was a 5 hr round waiting on every shot. Bad start. The next day was the Straits and that was a great day. Next we played the Irish and it started out the same way as the River but at least there, there was a ranger out there and let us know the situation was known and they were working on it. No one at the River. After about 9 holes the pace picked up and the back nine was fine. Went back to the Straits a second time and it was just as good as the first day. I would probably not recommend this place. If you’re going to spend that kind of money I would chose Pebble Beach , Pinehurst etc.

Traveled as family of 4 so husband could golf BW and WS. We were a bit disappointed given the room rate on par with some of the nicest Four Seasons we have stayed at. Positives - staff is super friendly and go out of their way to help you. Hotel was clean. Service was prompt. Hotel is quaint. Room layout was lovely. Disappointments - hotel is very old (e.g., musty, some doors don't close properly, etc.). Mattresses very worn and soft - even my 11 year old complained and he has slept on plenty of sofa beds with no issue. None of us slept well. Greenhouse room very inconvenient and without many options. Dining and overall amenities either lacking or a hassle because they are a shuttle ride away. Tips for families with kids - indoor pool, simulator with carnival games and dodgeball at Swing Studio, and Sheboygan children's museum. I would pay $450 a night for this hotel but it needs a serious update and more convenient amenities/varied dining choices to justify $900/night.

The grounds are beautiful, the garden transports you to England. Summer was a great time to visit. The spa was one of the best I’ve been to. We didn’t know we needed reservations for breakfast in the AM, and were told we needed to wait 15 min to be seated at 8 am (the people behind us were told it was a 20 min wait). If reservations were needed for breakfast it would have been nice to know that ahead of time. Our room was cozy but charming. The staff who took care of it left us nice notes at night, and the lavender linen spray was the perfect touch. We stayed in the Harriet Tubman room, and that was great. The staff at the front desk was extremely helpful- and Sherri in the gift shop was a delight. Other than them- no one else was very accommodating. We are from the Midwest so we know the “charm” and kindness most midwesterners are known for, and the hotel just seemed lacking in that. For 5 stars I would expect more, but maybe it was an odd weekend. My husband is the golfer and said that Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run are two of the nicest courses he has ever seen. Our friends dined at the Immigrant Room and they said that was 5 stars. Overall, it was a great trip. I just think for 5 stars no detail would have gone unnoticed and that was what was lacking.

I organized a group of 8 guys from NC to Whistling Straits. We chose to stay in the Carriage House at The American Club and we stayed 4 nights and played 6 rounds of golf at The Irish and the Straits at Whistling, and at The River and Meadow Valleys at Black Wolf Run. Leading up to the trip, I was increasingly concerned because of all the recent negative reviews of the property and service. My conclusion is that some people are impossible to satisfy. What we wanted was a first class trip to a bucket list golf resort with comfortable accommodations, great golf, friendly service, good food, and easy logistics after arrival. KOHLER DELIVERED. We had the best time from check-in to check-out, we were treated like kings. The service was nothing short of spectacular. The rooms were perfect, the beds were so comfortable it was hard to get out of bed in the morning, the cleaning service and the attention to detail was impressive - the cleaning staff left us notes every day, organized our shoes on the floor, organized our toiletries, even neatly wound up any loose power cords left plugged into various outlets in the room. The American Club was rich in history and well-deserving of the 5 star rating. It is not a modern hotel in Los Angeles - if you want that, don't come here. If you want 5 star service, comfortable rooms, great restaurants, and spectacular golf - this place should be at the top of your bucket list. Spectacular stay. Will definitely be back!

We visited The American Club this past week. Our stay was from Sunday through Thursday. The conference services were great, but the hotel was lacking. Check in: We arrived around 1:30 pm and the others that checked in at the same time were given a room right away. My wife and I went to the coffee shop and relaxed. An hour later we can back to see others arrive and be given a room immediately. Our room was still not ready. The last of our group arrived a little before 3 and were given their rooms and yet our room was not ready. We figured out that our room was preassigned (the coffee shop looked it up). I asked them to check on the room and they said it would be 20 minutes. Finally at 3:45 I came back and asked them to please give us our room as our entire group was already checked in. The desk said “we were just about to call you”. Hmmmm. Horse and Plow: The Horse and Plow is a nice bar but has limited hours. They are open from 4-11pm. Actually they try to close before 11. On Monday night they had last call at 10:15 and asked us to leave at 10:45. On Wednesday we came back from dinner and tried to enter from the outside at 10:30 and the doors were locked. FYI this is the only bar on the property. Wisconsin Room: Nice restaurant, the ribeye was great! Greenhouse coffee shop: Coffee is excellent, food options are not good (think premade convenience store). There is no pool, exercise room, etc on property. Golf was excellent. Overall, I would not recommend staying at the American club unless you were only there to golf. Even then I would likely check with the BNB next to the market.

Response from Ruben Cambero Sedano, General Manager at The American Club

Dear Christian, My gratitude for your recent visit to The American Club and for dedicating time to share your experience with us. There are certainly comments on your note that we will be discussing with our teams that show areas where we had an opportunity to own the now and deliver excellent customer service. We fell short and I apologize for it. All the rooms within your group were pre-assigned as there was a group amenity delivered, but we could have certainly worked around it. Good lesson learned and an opportunity for our front desk team to surprise and delight in the future. I will pass your comments regarding your food and beverage experiences to both our Director of F&B and our Executive Chef, specially regarding the Horse and Plow service and Green House food options. I'd like the opportunity to assure you that all the pastries, sandwiches and items offered at our Green House Café are made daily in-house from scratch at our pastry kitchen. Regarding the pool and exercise room, we regret that you did not have the opportunity to enjoy our Sports Core center during your stay. I will investigate why we fell short in describing our resort amenities during your check in experience and will also use it as an example to coach our guest services team on the importance of it. Our Sports Core center is a world class facility with 100,000 square feet of amenities, to include 12 tennis courts, a lap pool, a family pool, a lake to enjoy a swim in nature and the latest and greatest in fitness equipment, group and individual classes. Christian, my apologies for not delivering the level of service and experience that is expected and deserved. I would like to make myself available to learn more about your experience and hopefully regain your confidence in our resort. My contact information is ruben.camberosedano@kohler.com and 920-226-8792 Sincerely, Ruben Cambero Sedano General Manager | The American Club & Inn on Woodlake

Stayed at the Amerian Club and the rooms and staff at the hotel were lovely. The Immigrant Restaurant and Whistling Straits restaurants were so awful it was embarrassing. The food came out cold and the one bartender was so rude and kept turning away guests....all while he only had 1 couple at his bar.

We reserved a Deluxe Carriage House room. We were "upgraded" to an Immersion Suite, which we did not request, nor want and told the front desk we did not like the room we were put into & were very uncomfortable with it. They did nothing to provide us with the room type we actually reserved so that we could be comfortable after we informed them that we did not want the room (facility was not even CLOSE to being sold out while we were there, so an excuse of "we overbooked that room type" would be a lie). Instead, informed us when we checked out that they comp'd us 1 night free for our "issues", never acknowledging what "issues" we were comp'd for. They knew the entire time we were there that we did not like nor want the room, that THEY changed us to. Never apologized for forcing us to stay in an uncomfortable room, just "here's some money back for 'issues'". The GM's (Ruben Cambero Sedano) response via Google Reviews of "well other guests always tell us they love this room type" is insulting. If other guests love it, then it is absurd and wrong for anyone to not be comfortable with having no privacy and be forced to shower or bathe on display to the entire room. This is a disgusting excuse for service. I would never, ever, ever stay here again. E.V.E.R. Original post: Just arrived to find our room (immediately next to the elevator = loud) is open concept from bed to bath. Some people may find this romantic, I have always found it creepy. Super uncomfortable and disappointed that this is the first impression arriving here. The bed faces directly at the clear glass shower and the bath tub is right next to the couch in the "sitting area", just staring right in on ya if you want to shower or take a bath. I don't need nor want to be stared at when I shower or bathe. I cant be the only person who wants privacy in a bathroom, not for it to be on display to the entire room. Oh, but at least the toilet has a solid door enclosing it, so there are evidently SOME things they feel can have privacy. It would be really nice if they disclosed this info in the room descriptions so we could have chosen a room option where I would actually feel comfortable. I called down to the front desk and asked if all rooms have this same open concept-staring at ya while ya shower, footprint, I was told yes, in this particular room type. I made it clear this made me uncomfortable and the front desk woman said nothing in return. Great way to start off a long, relaxing weekend, by being creeped out and made uncomfortable. Seriously considering just leaving, not at all what I had envisioned or what I was hoping for.

Negatives: Shabby, rundown, dirty & dingy room, below average food. Spa was overrated - pool was like an extra-large bathtub for several people. This resort surely must be resting on its history, although I'm not sure this would have been nice even 30 years ago. Overpriced, depressing and overall unimpressive. Positives: Staff was friendly, attentive and kind.

Dear J S, thank you very much for your recent stay at Destination Kohler. My name is Ruben Cambero Sedano, and I am the General Manager of The American Club and Inn on Woodlake. Nothing would please us more than to regain your confidence in our property. J. S. I’d love the opportunity to discuss your stay at your convenience. Stayed in the Carriage House above the spa this past week. Had a "standard" room which was on the small side, but very comfortable. Turndown and evening snack service was well done (even with post Covid packaged products still in place). Continental breakfast was just ok. Service at every step was excellent, whether at the hotel or spa. Great place to recharge regardless of the weather outside.

We stayed in the Carriage House building of the American Club which is next door to the main American Club building. Very historic and beautiful. The Carriage House is ideal if you are using the Kohler Waters Spa (located in the Carriage House building). The lodgings and service were top notch. Very expensive, but worth it for a special occasion.
