Detailed Reviews
At nearly 100 years old, Spider Lake Lodge offers an old time sportsman’s lodge feel with modern amenities. Hosts Caroline and Andy immediately make you feel at home and have great advice for what to do in the area. The fridge, dishes and equipment in the kitchen are available to guests.
Breakfast during Covid is simple but satisfying. I hear it is a little more elaborate normally, but we were very happy with what we had.
The lakefront has a variety of watercraft, a couple of docks and a swim raft. We visited in Fall, so we just enjoyed the view, the breeze and the sound of nature.
At night, there are two fireplaces, an enclosed porch, several outdoor sitting areas and fire pit down on the waterfront. The rooms are an inviting retreat to end the day. The Bear’s Den is highly recommended. Among the amenities are warm, soft robes and a gas fireplace. I don’t know if it was all of the fresh air or the bed itself, but I normally don’t sleep that well my first night in a new place. Not the case here...I dropped off and slept like a rock.
WiFi was a little spotty, but worked well enough to get information on things to do and how to get there. I don’t believe there are TVs in the lodge, but with great surroundings, who needs it?
If you’re looking for a place to step back, relax and enjoy a peaceful time, Spider Lake Lodge is worth checking out.

We recently stayed at Spider Lake Lodge Bed and Breakfast Inn. We selected the nicest among their accommodations which was a private cabin near the lodge. Upon our arrival we were greeted graciously and shown to our lakefront cabin . A slight personal issue arose later and Carolyn and Robert, our hosts, bent over backwards to ensure that our needs were met, and then some. Service and customer care are very important us when we travel as a place can be lovely, but it's the people who make you feel special. We would recommend that should you desire a getaway in the north woods, this is an idyllic little spot to spend time privately and serenely enjoying Spider Lake.

We had a wonderful few days at the Spider Lake Lodge. We were welcomed immediately and taken to our wonderful lakeside room. It was so quiet and beautiful. The lake is wonderful and enjoyed sitting by the water listening to the loons. My morning run I saw 3 sets of deer and some turkeys. The breakfast was filling and the nearby restaurants had good food. We highly recommend it. If you go, bring your own beverages and snacks, we sat on the porch and had a beer before going out to dinner.

Wonderful, historic 'cabin in the woods'! Truly a unique experience and one I would recommend to anyone looking for a secluded weekend/week away. We enjoyed the kayaks, sauna, fire pits, comfy beds, and delicious breakfast. The inn keeper, Lisa, is wonderful and makes your stay so relaxing!

Everything about our stay was great! Outstanding hospitality, lovely lodgings, delicious food. We loved the decor and relaxing by the fire. Our host, DeLise, also gave great suggestions of places to go in the area. Will definitely return and would definitely recommend to others.

A wonderful lodge tucked into the beautiful North woods of Wisconsin. Spider Lake is a clear clean lake with wonderful little islands. Listen to the loons and the screech of the eagle while sipping your morning coffee on the old back porch. Andrew our host was great and the morning breakfast was fantastic. Treat yourself to a great weekend getaway at The Spider Lake Lodge.

We loved our stay at Spider Lake. Beautiful cabin feel, we loved our quaint bedroom and fabulous breakfast. And our host was ready to help us in any way. You could explore the history of the century-old resort and meditate in the stunning lakeside setting. It was a great visit!

Enjoyed a nice stay at this historic lodge! Stayed in the Capone room with views of the lake and sounds of loons in the distance. The breakfasts were very enjoyable! Great hospitality from Inn Keeper, DeLise!! Highly recommend!

It was an amazing experience and the lodge is absolutely beautiful! We stayed at Tom's Treehouse which is a cute cabin right next to the lodge. The lodge itself is so beautiful and we had the whole place to ourselves. Our family enjoyed the entire experience, and the hospitality was above and beyond! Definitely coming back!

I made reservations as a surprise for my fiancé's birthday. Sean was pretty responsive in the process of making my reservation, despite reviews on here stating the contrary. I thought I had won the lottery when he informed that the "Moody's Camp" room was still available, as it boasts a semi-private balcony overlooking the lake, and is the only room with a whirlpool. Based on the great reviews and the stunning photos, I was beyond excited to surprise my fiancé with this gift.
First-timers should note that Google Maps will not lead you to the lodge. Make sure to get directions, as we (and another couple there) got lost because there are very few signs after a certain point on the way to the lodge.
Upon arrival, I thought, "WOWZAS, this place is incredible." It looks exactly as the website depicts; stunning north woods lodge feel with the perfect amount of vintage flair. Sean greeted us relatively warmly and gave us a quick tour of the lodge. He did admit to not remembering speaking to or e-mailing me, which was somewhat unwelcoming. Jim also degraded my mom's dinner recommendation, saying we should go there if we "wanted to wait in line and eat endless portions of fried food and coleslaw." (They recommended places that were at least $30/plate...we ended up going to and loving Lost Land Lake Lodge & Tall Pines). But, we let that roll off our backs, figuring they had an "in" with other more expensive local restaurant owners. Neither Sean nor Jim offered to help with our bags, so we carried them all in ourselves. Sean informed that they would be gone "all the next day" and we wouldn't see them until two mornings later. Sean stated he "didn't know what the guest cook would be making for breakfast the next day." We were not offered the option to have breakfast on our private balcony.
Upon settling into our room, the view from Moody's Camp was beautiful. The view of the bathroom was NOT. The jets of the whirlpool were caked with black mold, there was tacky "marble" looking fiber glass for two of the walls (and also left a gap between the walls and the ceiling), and the door was a gross 70s-style cheapo that squeaked. I couldn't believe I was paying $209/night for that room when the whirlpool was not usable. (We fish in the Canadian wilderness and stay in logging cabins--the bathroom was seriously comparable.)
The next morning, we had to go up to get our own coffee, as none was ever offered to be brought to our room. At breakfast, there were not enough tables for all the rooms, so we had to sit with another couple. (A minor annoyance, and the couple ended up being really interesting.) When the guest cook brought it out, I couldn't believe it, based on the outstanding reviews of breakfasts at Spider Lake Lodge. Plain scrambled eggs, processed sausage links, bacon, bland hash browns, and burnt toast. (Picture continental breakfast at the Holiday Inn.) Whhhaaaat!? Everyone on here references "Roz' amazing breakfast" but we never heard about her? Perhaps she no longer works there.
Ok, fine...we figured it'd get better...she was just a guest cook and did the best she could. (But again, at $209/night...c'mon.) We left for a day of biking and returned around 3:00pm. Upon our return, our bed was not made, our dirty coffee cups were still in our room, and no clean/dry towels or washcloths were placed in our room. No one had even made our bed while we were gone!? (We could have paid $50/night at the Super 8 and gotten that done.)
No one was around to put out wine or any snacks, so we went back into town for a bottle of wine, cheese, and fruit. We came back and I had to put together our own little appetizers in the kitchen. Wow. Even some of the cheapest B&Bs we've stayed in put wine out in the evening. We then went fishing and I was bitten by something and had a horrible reaction-my whole foot swelled and I couldn't walk the next day. I needed some antiseptic (the sign in the room said there was a First Aid kit available) but no one was around, so we couldn't ask for it.
The next morning, we again had to get our own coffee. This time, Jim made breakfast and it was incredible. (Baked French toast with caramel sauce and berries with homemade sausage, and yogurt with granola and fruit.)
We wanted to allow Jim & Sean an opportunity to "make it right" once we informed them of our concerns. My fiancé asked Jim if we could check out, and Jim said "let me go check and make sure we still have your card on file." When he returned, he said we were "good to go" and handed us our receipt without having even asked how our stay went. My fiancé then outlined all of the above concerns for Jim. Jim stated that if we wanted our beds made and fresh towels, we "should have asked for it at check in." (WHAT!?) He also said that "a tile guy was supposed to come redo the tub but never showed up." (Not sure how that remedies our experience those two days?) Jim was very defensive and apologized for nothing except my injury.
Moral of the story: This place is stunningly beautiful (minus the bathroom in Moody's Camp) but the service is tragic. We have stayed at many B&Bs (this is the second most expensive) and this was by far the worst value. (For much less money we've experienced breakfast in bed, happy hours with snacks, warm towels, personalized picnic basket lunches, etc.) They apparently have another business that takes priority, which is fine! But then we felt they should have someone present to manage the B&B so people with really high expectations to give a thoughtful gift to a loved one aren't disappointed. At $430, we could have gotten a clean hotel room and had money left over for other more extravagant activities. (And we backpack into the wilderness to hunt elk, fish trout, etc....so we do NOT expect glitz and glamor wherever we go. But for that price, we don't expect to make our own bed!) Unfortunately, we will not return to Spider Lake Lodge, nor will my family members who were anxiously awaiting our return to book their stays at the lodge.

Response from Sean C, Owner at Spider Lake Lodge Bed & Breakfast Inn
Responded Aug 9, 2013
Normally it is against my judgment to respond to reviews such as these, at risk of sounding unduly defensive. This review however, does offer some interesting points and provides an excellent opportunity for me to clarify a few things about our Lodge to our valued readers and guests. Our mission at Spider Lake Lodge is to provide a unique, casual and romantic lodging experience in an authentic, historic and beautiful log lodge . To that end, we invite our guests to make themselves at home. We offer a friendly greeting and story or two, and our best recommendations for a good dinner. After you’ve enjoyed some of the best the area has to offer, we invite you to return to the lodge to a comfortable bed and a hearty breakfast each the next day. Every evening, we welcome guests into our home (the Lodge), from around the country and the world, so they may experience the special northern Wisconsin hospitality pioneered by Ted and Myrtle Moody nearly 100 years ago. We work very hard to provide a special experience for our guests, by designing, maintaining, cleaning, and upgrading our facilities as needed without jeopardizing the historic integrity of the old Lodge. We believe the Spider Lake Lodge offers a rare glimpse of life in another time. We do not have cell phone service, room service or maid service. We do not have a front desk, doormen, bartenders, or a concierge. We seek to give our guests ample space to re-connect with each other , unwind and escape the rigors of daily life. We are not a 5 star hotel, luxury resort or chain hotel and we do not profess to offer the same services as provided by those fine establishments. We acknowledge that the Lodge experience may not be ideal for everyone. So to the adventurers and romantics who seek out the unique experience we offer at Spider Lake….we invite you to experience the Lodge and look forward to meeting you soon. We are very proud of the work we have done to preserve this historic and architectural treasure and we are honored to open our home to you. To those seeking the more royal accommodations provided by the chain hotels and luxury resorts of the world, we encourage you to seek out those destinations, and save Spider Lake for a different time. Thank you to our recent guests for their valuable feedback and we appreciate the opportunity to respond. I hope that foot is feeling better! Best regards, Jim Kerkow – Owner
