We were pretty disappointed in our 2 night stay here. Started with clunky check-in, took a long time to find reservation / room for us. Room was not cleaned well (i.e. hair on the bathroom floor, dirty washcloths still in the shower, etc). Maintenance is lacking (leaking A/C from unit above dripping on our heads on balcony, gas fireplace was broken). We had a premium room with a river view, but the road noise was substantial. Experience in the high-end dining room was not the best - waitress did not offer any specials , food was so-so (Schnitzel was tough), no coffee offered to us after dinner. We were told coat and tie were required for dinner; and people seated next to us were in cut-off bluejeans. We get it that they're dealing with a pandemic; we get it that someone stole their hotel's reservation computer while they were closed; we get it that their budget is probably stretched way thin and that maintaining an old building is expensive. But still, given the amount they charge and how rarely we get out, we were still quite let down.

We visited the fine dining restaurant at the Bavarian Inn as a birthday treat to my husband. The food was authentic and cooked perfectly. Dessert was served with a happy birthday message drizzled in chocolate. With two martinis, appetizers, beer and entrees we expected the bill to be much higher, so we were pleasantly surprised with the cost. Took home leftovers because the portions were very generous. Our server, Luke, was phenomenal. Definitely going to request him next time. We will also stay in the inn next time. The views and landscaping in the property alone are worth it.

Pros - Tasty cuisine and good atmosphere at updated restaurant - Pretty view of the Potomac/close to the Trail - Infinity pool Cons - Lack of soundproofing in rooms caused a sleepless night - Decaying and cobweb-filled balcony - Rooms/Buildings need updated/refreshed;so much potential

Booked Potomac View Upper Level Premier room. Our room was actually on the second/middle of three levels (we were told at check-in [not on website] that the two higher levels are considered "upper"). We had a nice view of the river, but were afraid to spend much time on the small wooden balcony, as the railing was rotting away and loose. Plus there were tons of spider webs in and outside of the room, including a very large one right inside the entrance of the hotel. Internet was spotty. Check-in is at 4:00 and not a minute earlier. They told us they would call us when room was ready, but never did. We finally went back to the lobby and asked if we could check in and was told we could. They let us use the pool while waiting to check in. The pool was nice but there were not enough umbrellas. Those spots were already claimed by other guests. We were told the pool opened at noon, so didn't arrive much earlier than that. But the pool is actually open for swimming at 8 am. I think it's just the bar and food service that open at noon. Speaking of the pool and food, you can order food to be delivered to you at the pool. Many people did so and, in fact, ate their food IN THE POOL. Not kidding! One couple ordered a sandwich and french fries. Took a bite, put hands in pool, went right back to food with pool-hands and took another bite, and so on. So, we had to swim in sandwich and french fry water. That was odd and gross to us. Otherwise the restaurant was nice. Most of the staff was really friendly. Not sure it was all worth the money we spent, but it was good to get away overnight.

We booked a room for the weekend, the Potomac View Lower Level Premier. The Lower Level is effectively in the basement. You have to walk down numerous steps to get there, giving you a strong subterranean feeling. It's so much like a basement that it comes equipped with numerous 1,000 leggers I had to kill in the room! WiFi was almost non-existent down in the dungeon; even the cable reception struggled so far down in the catacombs! The hallway down there was used for storage: numerous mirrors were stacked on the floor against the walls! For a Premier room in what is touted on-line as being in line with all CDC guidelines relative to COVID-19 cleanliness, you wouldn't expect to find hair on the bath mat or bed either for that matter! Additionally, there was a very suspect smear on the front of the toilet; blood or poop, but either way totally gross! The porch/balcony was full of cobwebs/bugs and barely wide enough to turn sideways on it! When I went to the front desk to inquire about moving, I mentioned to the woman helping me that had I known the room was practically underground I likely wouldn't have made the reservation. Someone else behind the counter that I wasn't talking to barked out that the down steps are clearly identified on the web. I told her: 1) I wasn't talking with her (the lady I WAS talking with was quite helpful) , and 2) it's FAR from self-evident on the website. Positives: the infinity pool is quite nice, and the restaurant was very good. But those fall FAR short of compensating for the poor room! We left after the first night and ate the cost of the second night, we wanted out of there so badly! Great place for a meal and a dip in the pool, just don't stay there!!
