The Inn at Lost River is a historic, farmhouse B&B in the heart of Lost River, West Virginia, just two hours outside of Washington, DC. Book a weekend getaway and enjoy a variety of activities in the area, as well as amenities that are unique to our B&B, including The Lost River General Store. Today, serving primarily tourists, the The Lost River General Store holds true to its roots, a general store feel with a modern twist. Visitors can shop an array of product including antiques, art, wine and craft beer, gourmet pantry items, and enjoy a full-service cafe menu that changes with the seasons. It is a must-see destination for anyone passing by.
I'm a mid-twenties female and my boyfriend and I came across this place on LivingSocial Escapes. It was one of the nicest Inns either of us have stayed at to date. The service was impeccable, the inn owners (Toni and Ted) were the perfect mixture of friendly and engaging while giving us space, and the food was completely delectable. There is no cell phone service, heads up, but it was just what I needed to fully escape for the weekend. A must stay for anyone in the DC area looking for the perfect getaway within driving distance.
We will be going back the second we have a weekend off!

This was our third stay here in the past year and a half. The first stay was purely by luck, as we were referred when the motel we'd intended to stay was booked. We've known Toni for years but met her husband Ted. They are very sweet people who enjoy our visits each time. They go out of their way to ensure we enjoy our stay.

What a wonderful inn! Toni and Ted are welcoming and warm. The impeccably decorated inn is immaculate and set in very pretty country. The breakfasts were awesome, custom prepared and using the best ingredients. I am not a B & B person so I wasn't expecting to be that happy but I was. I even got to go next door and feed the donkeys. I would go back. Note to gadget addicted people such as myself. There is no cell phone service in the area and the wifi is wonky. If these things are deal breakers you would not be happy and Toni and Ted would deserve better than that. I got over it for a weekend.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments! We are very happy that you were able to “disconnect”, breathe, relax and unwind for the weekend. Cell phone service is available at the Inn for AT&T customers throughout the property with our mini cell phone tower. Free WiFi is always available in the Gathering Room and at the Lost River General Store. It was great having you and listening to your postive contributions and incredible journey. Let us know when the book is published!

Sara: My husband and I's first foray into the Bed and Breakfast world could not have been a more wonderful experience. From meeting Ted and Toni [and Maddie!], seeing their beautiful home, tasty breakfasts, and the wonderful location, we were surprised and immediately put at ease and relaxed. From the made-to-order breakfast each morning to the lovely accommodations, we were encouraged to unwind from life and enjoy the beauty West Virginia has to offer. I'm happy to say we are both anticipating our next Bed and Breakfast stay, and hope to return to the Lost River Inn in the future!

Fantastic house, garden and valley, and the loveliest hosts! We arrived late afternoon, in time for cheeand wine on the deck. Then we tried (and failed) to climb the steep ridge at the bottom of the garden. Said hello to the sheep and the donkeys too! The house is a beautifully spacious white clapboard house, with lovely, simple, tasteful decoration, steps up to the huge beds and ensuite. We had chilli and a beer at the lost rivr grill down the road, then chilled ot in the living room for the evening. The owners were so great and we would have loved to have stayed and chatted for days! Breakfast was fantastic and we went on our way with deli sandwiches from the store which is attached to the b&b. Then we were at the Appalachian trail in an hour! Couldn't have been better!

We heard of the Inn at Lost River b/c of a recent Living Social deal. It was perfect timing b/c we were looking for a way to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. I am VERY happy that we decided to try out this WV B&B!
My husband and i have stayed in a couple of other B&B's and we both agree, that what makes or breaks the experience is the Innkeepers themselves. Toni and Ted made us feel so welcome and did a wonderful job of making a beautiful B&B spectacular b/c of the overall experience.
The Inn is designed to make you relax and take things slowly. Something that is hard for those of us connected to our phones and computers 24 hours a day. But when you can stop and actually do this, you wonder why you don't do it more often! We spent the first night playing a board game in our cottage while listening to the creek next to us. Perfect way to unwind after a stressful work day! (There is wifi and a large flatscreen in the Inn if you can't take it)
We stayed in the SmokeHouse which is one of the outside cottages. It is decorated wonderfully and has a very relaxing feel. It is on the smaller size (compared to the other rooms) but the open arched celing gives it a more open feel. And the rain on the roof the second night was great! I loved that we had our own private entrance and a porch. When we return, I want to try out the Springhouse which is larger with a sitting area and a screened it porch!
Both mornings we had a delicous breakfast prepared by Toni and Ted. Each time i found my self saying..."what a wonderful display....i can't wait to try and make this myself...man, this is good!" I am a picky eater and what i loved about this B&B is that you could choose your main course. We've stayed at another B&B that had a beautiful breakfast but it happened to be foods i did not like and therefor could not enjoy. Here there were at least 3-4 choices every morning! And they are so welcoming that i'm sure they would find a way to make whatever you asked for.
One of my favorite parts of this Inn were all of the creatures. For those of you who don't love animals...no worries, you don't have to cross paths with them unless you want to. But if you do love animals...you can hang out with Maddie, their yellow lab....make friends with calico kitty....say hello to the neighboring burrows....and meet the coolest sheep ever! (they think they are dogs i believe)
Another thing i loved was the General Store! It has something for everyone and is great just to walk around in. Many great ideas :) It seems to be a gathering place for locals, people who own cabins and vacation here on the weekends, and new guests all together. The menu has soups, paninis, sandwichs, bbq, icecream, salads, and more. Even if you don't take our recommendation and stay at the Inn, you really need to stop by the general store!
We went horseback riding in the Lost River State Park. Toni actually set it all up for us and we just showed up on Saturday. It was a wonderful experience. The horses are very well taken care of and very well behaved. You don't have to worry if they are being loved! We did the 2 hour ride up the mountain. The view at the top is spectacular! Then we grabbed our picnic lunch (that they had prepared for us at the General Store) and ate it next to the rope bridge. (Bring Bug Spray!!)
On Saturday night we decided to eat at a different place in Lost River, simply to see another place and explore the area. (Toni and Ted do serve dinner at this Inn and i wish we would have stayed there b/c with the breakfast and attention to detail, i don't see how it would have been anything less than excellent.) To make a long story short...it was not the best overall experience and it involved a bottle of wine that we had purchased and did not enjoy. I told Toni and Ted about our experience and they said to pick out a bottle of wine from the General Store and it would be their gift to us (this was on top of the $50 certificate from the living social deal which was already a great deal!). I replied that they had nothing to do with our experience being not so great and they didn't need to do that. They said that they wanted our entire experience to be a great one.....Ted had a bottle wrapped and waiting at the general store. (AND it was Sauv Blanc which i had told them was my favorite) How often does something like this happen? How often do people go out of their way to make up for someone else's mistake? Not that often! And i think it says a lot about the type of people they are.
Sorry for the long review but i wanted to get across the the wonderful experience we had hopefully help other people to have their own :) The Inn is beautiful and serene....the General store is delightful....and Toni and Ted couldn't be more welcoming! Not to mention....this is a great deal folks! That breakfast alone would cost a pretty penny! :)

As a surprise birthday getaway, my husband booked us for a weekend at the inn. We received a warm welcome by Toni and "Matty" the resident mascot. The inn was immaculate, warm, and inviting. When one of the guests discovered she would be solo, she asked to stay in the main house, and Toni immediately offered us the "Spring House" as my husband had originally wanted, but was already booked. It was directly behind the main house, roomy, with the most romantic decor. I loved it!! We slept well in the cozy bed, with a down cover. (There was heat in the room, but we enjoy a cool room to sleep in.) Breakfast was delicious, and I especially appreciate the extra touches Toni did for my birthday, including the beautiful flowers in the charming pottery. Everything was perfect! Also, a special thanks to Betty for sharing her wonderful bean recipe!!!

I have stayed at a variety of bed and breakfast inns both domestically and internationally. The Inn at Lost River certainly ranks in the top ten if not the top five. The location was beautiful, nestled in the Shenandoah Mountains. The house was nicely maintained keeping in form with its original style of the 1870's, a nice period piece. The rooms were quite spacious with tasteful decoration. The food, both dinner and breakfast, was excellent. The hosts were gracious, hospitable, and genuine making you feel welcome the moment you arrived. What shocked me was the cost. The Inn at Lost River is VERY reasonable, especially given the accommodation, all the extras, and great food. Highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

We have stayed in many inns and B&B's over the years across the country. West Virginia can boast that it has one of the best in the Inn at Lost River. Toni and Ted are exceptional hosts and have created a place of beauty and peace. The breakfasts were outstanding! My cousin and I returned for a visit to the area for 3 days in late April after having spent most of our childhood years vacationing in Lost River. Toni and Ted made it feel like coming home and we are so grateful for that!

What a great find! The rooms are clean, no frills, pet friendly. The restaurant and lounge are wonderful. The food was very tasty with good prices. All the locals gather here to eat and drink. The owner and staff are so friendly. We will definitely be back.

We would welcome the opportunity to have you as our guests, however I think this review is for another B&B in the area. Although pet lovers, at this time we are unable to accept pets and we do not have a lounge. Cheers, Toni

However we would welcome the opportunity to have you all visit the Lost River General Store and give apple slices for them to feed the sheep and burros next door.
