Since my wife grew up in the area we have stayed at the General Lewis Inn several times over 20 years. We recently stayed one night because we came into town to visit a friend in the hospital. On this particular stay we decided to have dinner in the restaurant. It was beautiful like we’ve come to expect and the food was very good. But why only 3 stars??? The waiter approached our table and said “we offer 3 types of water- tap, spring and sparkling, which would you like? The wife took spring and I sparkling, I thought to myself this is a nice touch. He brought out a decanter of spring water and a bottle of a name brand sparkling water. At this point my wife whispered “do you think they are charging us for this? I told her, no he didn’t say anything about a additional charge and about then I heard him offer up to another table the exact same way with no mention of any charge. BTW...we were told spring water was unlimited in our room during our stay. So it wasn’t a leap that sparking water wouldn’t be free as well during dinner. They brought out just baked biscuits with some very good spread and then a tasty salad and the entrees were fantastic. Why only 3 stars you wonder?? Received our check and they charged us $12 for the waters!! Since the dinner was so enjoyable I didn’t want to ruin it by making a fuss about the charge and since we were their for the night I would mention it the next morning at check out, then like any good courteous establishment they would credit me for the water scam. So I spoke to the very nice lady behind the desk the next morning about my surprise of the water charge and she said “I use to be a server and I always told my dinner guest of any up-charges”. With no offer of a credit in fact she didn’t even offer up an apology. Well so much for good courteous establishment. We will from now on pay a little extra and stay in the Greenbrier resort.

The General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg is a lovely surprise. This stately Inn is set in the historic section of Lewisburg WV. The public areas--lobby, parlor and dining room are charming. Our guest room was furnished with antiques--and fresh crisp linens. We chose a room with 2 full beds, but there is quite a variety of bed choices--full, king and queen. The service is impeccable. There is someone at the desk most of the time to help or answer questions. We had breakfast, brunch and dinner is the dining room. At all meals we had great service and exceptionally well prepared, fresh, and mostly locally sourced food. The biggest surprise was the price. The cost for our elegant room was about what you would expect to pay for a chain motel on the Interstate. A gourmet dinner with wine for the two of us was a little over $80.00 with tip. We will certainly return.

Spent one night in Room 120. The Inn itself is very charming, dinner was very good, breakfast was excellent, drinks at the bar excellent. Staff was kind, courteous, interesting. The room was nice, a little bit of an odd shape because ADA, otherwise clean and quiet. The heating/cooling system is a self-contained under-window unit and can be somewhat noisy (we were using it for heat). Surprised these haven't been upgraded -- they're in need of replacement. Bottom line: Nice overall ambiance, food and drink excellent, location perfect, property seems in need of some basic mechanical upgrades. Would definitely stay again.

The room was perfect for us and our grandchildren. The staff is outstanding. Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't open that night, but the bar provided incredible cocktails. We love this place and will return every opportunity.

New management means change but maybe in a good way -depending on what you like. The food was very good, but dinner had smaller portions than I would like. My daughter had steak and I had lamb. Veggies and mashed potatoes were good too, salad not so much. Toffee cake excellent. Breakfast was outstanding. Eggs Bene for me and potatoes with mushrooms for my daughter. Best breakfast! We stayed in an older room, made reservations late, but pretty and clean. The bed a little hard though. The only thing I missed were the ghost tours.I was told the new owners don't want those anymore. They do have events- weddings, etc. All in all, the Inn is walking distance to town and we wanted that. We attended the Taste of Lewisburg the next day. That is another review.
