Purchased the 2-hr train trip to Cass in July for 14 people. Recommend taking the Greenbrier car, as the seats are in a traditional bus seating. Beautiful trip up to Whitaker Station, 30 minute break, and back down. There are reasonably priced drinks, snacks, and plenty of food at Whitaker station to purchase. Some people had coolers. Could not imagine the 4.5... More

If you are in the Greenbrier/Snowshoe area this is a great day trip to take with the family. The shorter two-hour trip to Whittaker Station is recommended if going with children. However, adults would enjoy the longer trip to the top of the mountain. If you take the early two-hour trip, you also have time to stop by Greenbank Observatory... More

This was an interesting place. We did a little browsing, had lunch at the little cafe by the company store. Visited the depot, then took the train ride to Whitaker station. It was a very slow , smokey, at times ride. But we expected that, what a way to travel. The scenery is o.k. mostly woods&creek areas.Whitaker stop was pretty ho-hum. We did... More

July 4th weekend, I called way in advance but "all houses" we're booked. Seemed that many rows were empty when we arrived for the weekend? Glad we did not stay there since houses were very close together as we drove through late Sat night one of the homes was very boisterous. Luckily found excellent super good priced lodging(with a diner)... More

Our family has been going to Cass for the past 4 years. We love it! The "company houses" have been resurrected. The history has been saved, the steam engines are running up the hill, the ice cream shop is open, the country store is open they have a diner, the barber shop is open (haircut and a shave $8!),history tours... We stayed with friends in one of the houses, we enjoyed it a lot, plenty of space to have dinner, comfortable beds. Almost everything in the description was included: kitchen appliances, linen, wi-fi. They have coffee machine but you need to bring filters with you. The place was very clean. The big downfall was that there was only ONE hand... More

Make the trip up the mountain was outstanding, great views, fall leaf peeping at its best. Our trip was about five half hours with three stops to meet other trains. The trip included A hobo bag lunch which was very enjoyable. Everybody in our party which included young kids enjoyed themselves on the trip. In my opinion has to be... More

A retired lumber town with all the leftovers; company houses for rent, company store, hometown restaurant, art gallery with items by local artist only, and the main attraction; a steam locomotive powered by coal to take us up the scenic railroad to a mountainous top and back down again. Beautiful mountian views, mist rising from the valleys and sun warming... More

Staying in one of the railroad company houses was certainly a highlight of our trip. The house itself is very quaint and well maintained. Certainly, it is not a five star resort but that's not what you're there for. Super tiny bathroom. If those walls could talk, I'm sure the stories would be worth listening too. Staying in the home... Riding a Shay locomotive up the Mountain was fun and educational. All of the buildings were well maintained and the staff was pleasant and helpful. Experiencing the switchbacks was something I had never done. The train crew was terrific. Loved every minute of the trip.
