The good: Smooth check-in, great view, bed and pillows were good. Nice balcony to sit and enjoy the view, look for the marmots that scurry on the rocks and feen on the insects in the grass! The bad: Don't expect to receive any maid service if you stay more than one night- no clean towels, no replenished coffee supplies, ect. I was told this is becoming the industry standard and that if you want those things, you must ask at the front desk. The mandatory map showing where the stairs and elevator is wrong! Maybe they once had elevators at each end of the building but the only elevator is now in the lobby. Light bulb in lamp was missing and the other didn't work. There is no mat in the shower and the floor is extremely slick. The breakfast consisted of bagels, yogurt, fruit cups, dry cereal and boiled eggs. No fresh fruit or other bread.

The view is wonderful and the room was clean, which is saying a lot for hotels these days! So convenient to have a gas station next door. Staff was friendly. The only problem I came across was that the shower curtain was too short, so water created a pond on the floor and there weren’t enough towels in the room to clean it up and have one for each of us to dry off with. The lamps were also a little outdated as they don’t have the usb ports other hotels do to charge a phone. Not all of the outlets worked on the lamps, yet ALL of the outlets were too loose to hold any plugs in place. Bigger Tv would have been nice ;) Minor inconveniences. But overall a very lovely stay.

Great spot on the water. Our room was on the first floor because we are travelling with our dog Joey and dogs are only allowed on the ground floor. Room was spacious and well kept. High ceilings made it feel even roomier. Balcony right on the water. Fridge and microwave. We slept really well too!

Excellent reprieve from the heat while slaying salmon. Beautiful room that was so nice and cool and dark with peaceful music playing on the tv was the perfect welcome after a long day of 109 degree heat on the water. And then we opened the curtains to awesome waterfront view, with docks to leave boat in the water right at the hotel. Howard’s location and plentiful amenities are perfect for the summer salmon derby.

This was our third stay at Howard's. The first two were very nice, in a spacious, clean, and comfortable room (with a gas fireplace) and welcomed our pet. Our most recent visit, just last Sunday-Tuesday, was less so. I don't know if the ownership has changed, or it's that the pandemic has decimated the workforce in tiny Pateros, but the staff was way different than we were used to. The woman who checked me in apologized for being new, but apparently was not given much training before she was thrown to the wolves. After 20 minutes at the desk, me trying my best to be patient, and her trying frantically to work the computer, I was finally given our room keys and told I could "do the paperwork" later. It was not a difficult check-in to process. I had a reservation with all information already given. I can only imagine how the poor woman would have handled a walk-in. The next day, my husband had a few words with the manager over said paperwork, which stated that since we had a pet, we "were responsible for damages allegedly caused by our pet". My husband crossed out the word "allegedly", as "damage" pretty much would be a subjective decision on the management's part. This did not go over well. It kind of set a tone. There was one ADA parking spot by the front door, which we used, as my husband has mobility issues, and we have an ADA placard. Some employee or guest, driving a huge club-cab dually pickup, insisted on parking in the cross-hatch of the ADA space several times, despite there already being a car in the legal space (ours). This was also rather irritating. They did serve a continental breakfast, which many properties have reduced or suspended. The room was, as stated before, roomy, with small patio overlooking the Columbia River, a gas fireplace, and a comfy easy chair and ottoman. They have cut back to no housekeeping on multi-day stays. The wastebaskets got rather full. For the Standard Room Rate of $280 plus $30 tax per night, I think housekeeping could have at least dropped by to empty the trash. On this visit, the towels were thin and dingy, and the sheets were rough like muslin. Not at all as they had been before. I realize that every business has been adversely affected by the pandemic, and we tried on this 2-week trip to be understanding and not demanding. Howard's was our last stop, and maybe we were just tired after 2 weeks on the road, but it just wasn't the same place it was on the two previous visits.

Response from Rebecca Judd, General Manager at Howard's on the River
Responded Nov 3, 2021
I apologize you did not enjoy your stay and we do our best to resolve any and all issues and concerns you might have. I am sorry that check-in was difficult for you but there was an issue with the printer and she handled it as best as she could. She was new but we do give our staff adequate training but things do happen that are out of our control and she made sure you were in your room and comfortable until the situation was resolved. We welcome dogs in our hotel as we feel they are a part of your family but the paperwork is an important part as some dogs do damage. We look over each room to ensure your dog/dogs is not accused of damage that another dog has done and that gives us the ability to welcome dogs to our hotel. The ADA parking spots are both used by people with their handicap placards and we do not discriminate to what they drive but I do apologize if you had difficulty getting in your vehicle as we would have had anyone move over if that was brought to our attention. I went back and looked at your rate and it was not 280.00 a night and if you were charged that I would have been more than happy to have given you a refund. Our housekeepers do every stayover that has their clean room sign on their door as some guests do not want housekeepers in their rooms. Again we are sorry you were unhappy with your stay MGMT

An aging hotel past its prime with an indifferent staff. WiFi inoperable, towels dingy, the first time I have ever had a limit on the ice I could take from the machine. I would have rather been in a tent at Alta lake. All in all, I was very disappointed, especially since it seemed that the (night) staff was more interested in the tv in the lobby, or talking to their boyfriends than actually being of service to the guests. Never going back.

We stayed for two nights 8/13 and 8/14. Got up to my girlfriend screaming that there was a bat in the toilet. Sure enough....called front desk and advised them of the situation. A guy showed up in gloves and garbage bag. He thought it was funny......I and my girlfriend found no humor in the situation. We asked to be compensated in some way for the inconvenience. The front desk lady laughed and said she heard about it. Once again, not funny to us. Might want to check things in your rooms when you arrive.... Bill

I apologize that happened to you and I did reach out to you to see if there was anything I could do to make things right when this was brought to my attention. I do know that the lady at the front desk was not laughing out of humor but from knowing her reaction would have been the same and how scary that could have been. I do however apologize if you were in anyway offended and can assure you that it will not happen again. We do check the rooms out before guests arrive but some things are out of our control. We pride ourselves in our customer service, clean rooms and I again apologize that that happened to you. We do our best to make sure every stay is enjoyable so we do hope you come back and try our hotel again. MGMT

Our last several stays at the hotel were in July 2020 for sockeye salmon fishing trips. The hotel is quiet, relaxing, clean, has great AC, and great curtains to make the room very dark even during mid-day napping. On our last trip we were surprised that the mattress was missing its mattress cover, so it felt like we had a sheet on top of plastic (yuck-sweaty). I was able to go to the laundry and given a comforter I could put between the mattress and plastic (and then was comfortable). The breakfast could be a lot better but we are usually out fishing before it is even put out, so that has worked our for us. Overall the hotel remains one of the nicest places to stay in the Brewster area and we like being able to dock our boat right our front.

I needed a place to stay for a couple of nights when visiting the area. I am a Marriott Titanium member because I enjoy the consistency of their various brands. Alas, no Marriott in Pateros Washington so I consulted TA for recommendations. What a pleasant surprise!!! Superb, friendly staff. Large, clean room with a balcony overlooking the lake. So many great touches that showed they cared. How about getting up in the middle of the night and, after taking a couple of steps from the bed, the night light goes on in the bathroom 😊. Also, great restaurant next door.

Pros: Quiet - couldn’t hear guests slam doors Good HVAC Beautiful river view Private patio Large room - comfortable for 4 Refrigerator, microwave and sink Free coffee Comfortable bed Good water pressure Nice ice machines Cons Clean but stained bedding (maybe ink pen?) It would be nice to have a screen on patio door Breakfast items sub-par Toiletries average No swimming/river access - just boat docks Location is a 15 minute drive from Chelan but there are other activities near Pateros - try Methow River Rafting Limited restaurant options - but Sweet River Bakery is amazing I would stay again!
