Nettles Farm was founded in 1992 by Riley Starks. It has been home to a pasta company, a USDA chicken processing abattoir, and for 12 years the farm for the Willows Inn. Nettles has 2 private suites, luxury baths, and is suitable for children as well as groups. We feature laying hens, Oberhasli goats, a beautiful sandy beach, sparkling air and water, vegetables, fruit trees and berries.

Who wouldn't love getting away to a cabin in the woods on a small island for some peace and quiet. The Nettles Farm is a special place we appreciated from starting from the ferry ride over! Arriving during the coronavirus period we were reassured starting from our reservation confirmation that they took additional precautions to clean the property, create fun group experiences that were social distanced, and provided an adjusted complimentary breakfast where the fridge was loaded with fresh local goodies for breakfast - bread, butter, bacon, yogurt, and even fresh coffee and eggs from the Nettles Farm itself. We had the large cabin to ourselves enjoying the large kitchen to cook, the fireplace to relax by, and found success trying out the pizza oven! We booked and enjoyed a Paella class where we picked up some tips and tricks and had a fantastic dinner with good company. Riley took us on a successful truffle walk with himself and Stella where Riley generously gifted us a beautiful truffle as a birthday treat for our pizza that evening! Riley was a wonderful host checking it but giving us all the space in the world, and who wouldn't love playing with Stella! Till next time ...

I booked two nights at Nettles Farm with my two boys to get them away from the city. This was the best experience we've ever had hands down. From the time the island shuttle dropped us to the time we were dropped at the ferry, our host, Mr. Riley was the best we could ever ask for. Such a gracious gentleman that takes hospitality at heart. The farm house was spotless and welcoming. Fresh plants everywhere, and great sense of attention to details. The Moroccan Steam Sauna was my favorite surprise, and boy I used it a lot. This farm is the best you can ever experience if you are looking for a step back in time, with island mood and great host. I recommend this experience to anyone who seek awesome family time in an island that brings you back to the safety of the old good times. Richard.P

Nettles farm is all about the fine flavors of life. We arrived at this tucked-away spot high on the west-facing hill of beautiful Lummi island for a once-in a lifetime family reunion. With seven bedrooms, four bathrooms and two kitchens for cooks (one with a pizza oven) the property can host a big family (like ours) or multiple groups in different units. The kitchens are stocked with all of the ingredients an aspiring chef (like myself) would need - fine olive oil, vinegars, home-made crushed tomatoes, fixings for pizza dough... and Nettles farm treats - bacon, yoghurt, preserved peaches or apples, fresh eggs (from host Riley's poulet bleu... what is a poulet bleu you might ask? if you don;t know you need to get here and find out). Each day of our stay those incredible eggs were replenished and if your are lucky you may even get to breakfast witht he magnificent Riley who discovered world-famous chef Blaine Wetzel and is the visionary behind Lummi Island Wild seafood co-op. Our first dinner was a wild pizza party and our second was a salmon feast. Riley arranged for a boat charter to pick us up at Sunset beach, a short walk down the hill from Nettles farm for a fabulous day out at the Orcas Island farmers market and whale watching. Unfortunately Nettles is already booked for Thanksgiving (and that lucky family's turkeys are growing here as we speak!) The soul of Lummi is right here at Nettles farm. We can't wait to come back.

Nettles Farm is a low key delight. There's not much to do on Lummi Island, which is exactly the point. Staying at Nettles Farm is a great place to chill out and escape the demands of city life. It's not fancy, although the kitchen is the best ever. Seriously. In the Farm House Suite (one of two unique residences), there are commercial-quality burners and a Wood Stone oven, all of the tools you need, and fresh, organic staples. Raquel and Riley will help you out with any other things you need from local lore to locovore delights. If it's cooking and eating you enjoy (or reading and playing board games), this is the place to stay! It's quiet, secluded and restful at Nettles Farm, and we loved playing with Stella, the Truffle Slayer. Such a cool dog. The chickens were fun to watch too. We will be back!

So hard to even convey how cool and unique this property is. 3 couples, we had plenty of room and Riley was the best host. It's a real working farm and quirky in all the amazing ways. Feeding the chickens, talking gourmet food with Riley and of course walking down the road to have an insane dinner at Willows with Blaine and crew made this the coolest trip I have taken in a good long while.

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Nettles Farm House Suite. This truly is a special place: the suite itself, but also its surroundings, and the hospitality displayed by its host. First, the suite: the photos show kind of a rustic charm, but in reality, there's a simple luxury to everything here. Everything was spotlessly clean. This was, hands down, the best-stocked kitchen I've ever encountered in a vacation rental. Think high-quality kitchen utensils and cookware, knives that are actually sharp, and a gourmet woodstone oven! You won't just want to eat in to save money, but to use all the wonderful implements here. Truly a joy to cook in. As well, the bedroom was super comfy and relaxing, and the shower and bath were wonderful. We loved the natural light, and the use of the sunny porch just off the suite. Second: the surroundings. It's really very cool to stay on a working farm, but especially one as charming as the Nettles. We loved walking with Rosie and Nico (the goats) and picking herbs and salad greens for our dinner. I was worried about roosters disturbing our sleep, but that wasn't a problem. Lummi is a small island and Nettles is well-situated to get to the Willows Inn (for an unforgettable dinner). Third: the hospitality. Riley was wonderfully welcoming, making sure we had everything we needed and wanted. He's adept at navigating the balance between giving guests enough space while also being available if needed. I'd also add that for guests looking for a different kind of food and travel experience, Riley's depth of knowledge allows him to provide a unique perspective on food and food culture. We really enjoyed hearing about his various ventures - his passion for good food is so contagious. A final word about the breakfasts: to. die. for. The fresh eggs, the custom-blended granola, thick cut local bacon, home-roasted coffee beans... okay, I'm ready for a return trip!

We had a great weekend with Riley. I thought we were getting a room in a B&B, but we got a house with a steam shower and full kitchen and living room. The farm fresh eggs from the chickens across the driveway, ripe salmon berries right off the deck, and coffee beans roasted fresh for our visit were completely in keeping with the amazing meal we had at Willows Inn a few minutes' walk away. We were so relaxed from great food, the setting and the steam shower that we never even made it to the beach (also a few minutes walk away). We'll have to come back to see the 175 million year old palm tree fossil on the beach another time.

We made a trip to Lummi on a whim, and stumbled upon the Nettle Farm entirely by chance. What luck! Riley's farm is a little oasis and the bed and breakfast is everything we could have asked for. Riley supplied us with fantastically fresh eggs, bacon, bread, good strong coffee, and asparagus that put anything else we've had to utter shame. He encouraged us to take the goats for a walk (wish we'd taken him up on that) and was willing to share the bounty of his garden. We lounged on the secluded back deck with tea at breakfast, watched the deer in the woods nearby, biked around the island, and followed up on many of Riley's recommendations. We weren't ready to spring for a dinner at the Willows Inn, but Riley told us we'd be welcome there for a cocktail. It was a perfect evening. If you enjoy cooking, plan to bring some groceries from the mainland. The kitchen had everything we could have asked for--sharp knives, good utensils, and a beautiful stove. We'd recommend this spot to anyone.

We stayed at Nettles Farm house last year with another couple and enjoyed it a lot. Lovely location on this quiet and rustic island. Perfect for a family with 1-2 children as well. 1 BR plus pullout couch that sleeps 2. Fully-stocked kitchen.

We had an amazing and unforgettable stay with Riley at Nettles Farmhouse Suite, I can't recommend it more highly. We picked fresh peas and berries in the garden, helped collect eggs, baked a wonderful meal in the Woodstone Fire oven, slept peacefully in a quiet and extremely comfortable bed and awoke to freshly roasted coffee. Riley is a charming and thoughtful host. The goats and chickens added humor and charm to the experience. How can it get better?
