#3 of 7 B&Bs / Inns in Ilwaco
China Beach Retreat is exactly that, a retreat from the hustling, bustling world. With expansive views of Bakers Bay and the mouth of the Columbia River, hydrotherapy, air-jet tubs in all rooms, the property is designed for relaxation. The main house has three guest rooms and the separate, stand-alone Audubon Cottage is appropriate for one couple. The house was built in 1908 and has floor-to-ceiling windows in the common area, showcasing a view of the Ilwaco fishing fleet coming and going. Wildlife is abundant--deer visit the yard frequently and Bakers Bay is teeming with waterfowl of many kinds. Great restaurants, pubs, museums and state parks are all within easy driving distance. Astoria, Oregon is just one-half hour away. No matter what the weather is doing, the view at China Beach Retreat captivates.

I spent one stormy, windy night in the Audubon Cottage - I wish I could have spent one or two more. The Audubon Cottage, like the main house, has expansive views of Bakers Bay and the mouth of the Columbia River. The grounds are beautiful ; the rain limited my exploration of the property but I saw enough to realize what a serene and special place it is - as someone else mentioned in a prior review, absolutely soul-soothing. The Audubon Cottage itself is beautiful, filled with ceramic artwork, tiles, and stained glass. The art is scattered about - some is immediately visible and noticeable, and other pieces, like the mural over the upstairs bathroom sink, you notice and appreciate as a very unique and lovely touch. The jacuzzi tub/shower was amazing and adorned with stunning tilework. The double doors to the bathroom are beautiful leaded (?) somewhat frosted glass - I wish I had taken a photo or could more accurately describe them. They are graceful and elegant! Even the stairway up to the second floor is gorgeous - the wood just gleams and would probably sparkle in the sun. Antique rugs are scattered about over the decorative floorwork. There are vases with flowers placed in just the right places - there's actually too much to describe and marvel at - so much beauty in the decor. Lamps and lighting fixtures are so very pretty and there are plenty of them for the long autumn nights. Every item seems well thought out to complement the cottage and the other furniture and exquisite decorative pieces, and positioned in just the perfect place. The bed was very very comfortable and there are windows on two sides which are almost floor length. Also a balcony to the outside at the top of the steps to use if the weather is a little less rainy and windy. The heating was perfect - it was so relaxing to be cozy and warm while watching the leaves whirling and the trees and grasses whipping about in the wind and rain. Downstairs ( the ground floor where you enter by the hot tub) there is a small kitchen and sitting area, as well as a powder room and an entrance closet. The outside porch with seating wraps around two sides of the cottage . Yard art is scattered about - and the yard is nicely landscaped. As you can tell, I loved my short stay and plan to return.

Absolutely beautiful rooms in an idyllic peaceful location plus charging for EVs and Teslas! We just stayed there with our family, including our elderly parents and our teens and all loved the experience. Quiet setting with lovely windows looking out onto the bay and hills. Conveniently located with short drives to the beach, Lewis and Clark sites, and other coastal points of interest. This is our favorite retreat in the entire country, truly, and we recommend it to all our friends and family.

My husband and I rented the Audubon Cottage for 3 nights, and were the only people on site. The website photos don't do it justice. As others have described, it is a 2 story small house in a secluded wooded setting very close to the city of Ilwaco. The lot looks out over a marshy area alive with birds and the river mouth beyond. The cottage is well maintained with beautiful woodwork and an eclectic decor of art and antique furniture. The small kitchenette had a fridge, microwave, coffee pot (coffee and tea provided), toaster, electric water pot, utensils, glasses, bottle opener, and some dishes. There's a half bath downstairs and a full bath with spa tub/shower combo upstairs. Gorgeous views out all windows. We were a bit disappointed that the soaking tub on the deck didn't have a heater...you fill it with hot water from the house and it's exposed to the elements. Bathrobes are provided in the cottage, as are plenty of towels, flat screen tv with dish network upstairs, and pretty much anything you could need for a quiet getaway. The king bed was comfortable, although the pillows were a bit flat. We found some extra pillows downstairs in a closet that were fluffier. Wifi worked well. A storm came through with wind and rain while we were there, but we stayed dry and comfortable inside. Daily housekeeping is included. We asked for a tour of the main 3 bedroom house before leaving, and were equally impressed by the lovely interior decor and gorgeous view. The 3 rooms in the house can be individually rented so it does lack privacy, and management live off-site. Prices are a bit spendy, but there are some off season promotions. We would love to visit again.

Thank you for your comments. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay, despite the inclement weather! Although, it can be dramatic to watch the changing weather unfold from the comfort of the cottage! We hope you'll visit us again.

My husband and I were in sore need of a getaway, a place to refresh our spirits, reconnect with nature and escape the noise, turmoil and distractions of our day to day life. We found all that at China Beach Retreat, a lovely haven of tranquility near Cape Disappointment. Our stay was all that we could hope for--a lovely, well appointed , immaculately maintained room, with windows facing the bay and, beautiful antiques, well kept grounds, and the icing on the cake, an air-jet, hydrotherapy massage tub for two! I had the best night's sleep I'd had in a very long time in the comfortable bed. We enjoyed sipping wine, watching the fishing fleet coming and going from the harbor in Ilwaco, and at night the harbor lights and moon reflecting on the tranquil waters of Baker Bay. My husband and I are musicians, and the muse was there for us. The owner, Dave Campiche, was the perfect host, whose personality matched his surroundings! All in all, we could not have been happier with our choice of lodgings on the Long Beach Peninsula. I heartily recommend China Beach Retreat!

We enjoyed our stay at the Audubon Cottage. Lovely small 2 story house on a wooded lot with lots of flowers, art and antiques. It has a spacious master bedroom and bath with jetted tub. First and second floor both have porches where you can watch ships coming and going, birdwatch or stargaze. Our favorite part of this the outdoor soaking tub, a treat to watch all the wildlife while soaking. We also loved the visiting deer which we were almost able to hand feed. This would be good for couples or a solo traveler.
